  • Caturday: Douglas is very possessive of his Apple products

You can't blame a cat for hogging all of the computer equipment in a house. After all, you probably pay more attention to the electronics than you do to your cat (or at least the cat will think so...), so he's going to try to do his best to grab all of it. That's what Larry Davidson's cat Douglas ("we call him Douglas because he has so much fur") apparently has in mind. Larry says that "Douglas always says 'it's all mine' as he walks on my iMac keyboard, but here he's being especially possessive with the iPad, iPod, printer, and scanner in addition." Frankly, I could see where Douglas could use a scanner to make copies of cat food coupons, print pictures from @EmrgencyKittens on the printer, and listen to the score of Cats on the iPod. And all of you Caturday regulars know that our feline friends use Macs and iPads with a passion. We'd love to see photos of your favorite feline soaking up the warmth of an Apple product, chasing a Magic Mouse, or just being a general nuisance while you're attempting to work on your Mac, iPad, or iPhone. Please let us know via our feedback page and please remember that your cat photo has to have some sort of connection to Apple or its products. For security reasons we can't accept inbound attachments, so you should host the photo (Dropbox, Flickr, iPhoto Journals, etc.) and send us the link. Many thanks to Larry Davidson and Douglas!

We've all seen videos of animals playing with technology, and with good reason. They're adorable. Today we bring you Cassie the cat, enjoying a lovely lazy Sunday with her iPad and a pond of fish. Cassie gets tired quickly, but it's alright. She's got a nice soft couch to nap on. Enjoy a nice break for an adorable cat today.

As mentioned last week, I have two new kittens (Merry and Pippin) who have taken over my office, my house, and my heart. They're also quite adept at taking over my computers when I'm trying to get work done. Well, that seems to be the case with a lot of felines, including this week's Caturday "centerfold", the lovely Baby Girl. TUAW reader Bob Hodgen sent this photo of Baby Girl lounging on his MacBook Pro, seemingly daring him to try to actually move her out of the way and use the laptop. Excellent cat video repository StudioSinga presents a look at what the next entry in Capcom's Monster Hunter series might look like if it starred a cast of gigantic feline protagonists. It, uh, would be much less challenging, for one thing. Cats are way OP. StudioSinga's Munchkin cats get a lot of playtime, having previously squared off against a disc-shooting spider-bot and a miniature air hockey table. They're no stranger to the world of video games, either, recently producing a parody video inspired by Level-5's Nintendo 3DS RPG Yo-Kai Watch. Now that I've successfully hijacked Joystiq's newsroom, I hope you'll enjoy our new format: all cat videos, all the time. Next up: top five greatest Internet cats. #5: The Munchkins. #4: Shiro and friends. #3: Hana and Maru. #2 oh crap Susan's back from walking her dog GOTTA GO BYE [Video: StudioSinga]

  • Caturday: Merry amidst the Mac mess

When you're a kitten and have just worn yourself out running around on Dad's keyboard for 20 minutes, there's nothing more relaxing to do than prop your fuzzy head up against a podcasting microphone and take a quick nap. Oh, and be sure to push everything else out of the way with your rear feet, too! Just before Caturday went on hiatus to let the dogs take over for the summer, we lost our almost twenty-year-old cat Ruby, who had been a favorite of fans of TUAW TV Live. Two weeks later, my wife and I adopted two unrelated black kittens -- Merry, who you see above, and Pippin (yes, we are Tolkien fans). Both of these cats have taken to their new home and working with me, and my work is often blissfully interrupted by one or both of them deciding to stand right in front of my iMac screen while I'm writing. I'm sure you'll be seeing a lot more of Merry and Pippin in future Caturdays if you don't send in your own Apple-oriented cat photos soon! Guys, GUYS, this Kickstarter campaign's giving you a chance to make your cat-rap dreams a reality. Hip-hop artists El-P and Killer Mike jokingly wrote on their website that they'll release a remix of their latest album, Run The Jewels 2, featuring cat sounds if someone pays them $40,000. So, what's an avid fan (and cat person) to do but try to raise that money, eh? Even better, one of the artists went on Twitter and promised to do it if the campaign reaches its goal. The duo didn't exactly clarify what kind of cat sounds those are, but we're hoping it's a mixture of meowing, hissing, caterwauling and relentless scratching on furniture.

  • Scientists catch Schrödinger's cat with quantum physics

Schrodinger's cat, the good ole thought experiment that's been twisting (non-Quantum physicist) brains for decades. Scientists might have just caught it. Or not. Typical. What you see above is a combined image where a stencil was bombarded with cosmic rays photons, but the photons that generated the image actually never interacted with the stencil -- stay with us. It was separate photons (which shared the same quantum state as the ones that hit the camera) which arrived at the stencil. The science goes that when two separate particles are entangled, their physical properties appear to correlate and they share a single quantum state.

One great thing about live streams of The International and LCS championships – you can read awesome articles between the matches. Welcome to Barely Related, a conversational Friday column that presents the non-gaming news stories that we, the Joystiq staff, have been talking about over the past week. And no, we're not stopping our focus on industry and gaming news. Think of this as your casual weekly recap of interesting (and mostly geeky) news, presented just in time to fill your brain with things to discuss at all of those weekend shindigs. Grab a fresh drink, lean back in your armchair, and get ready to talk nerdy with us.

  • High-tech cat feeder uses facial recognition to save all nine lives

Our four-legged friends have a habit of not eating when something ails them. However, if you're at work all day, you may not pick up on the lack of appetite until it's too late. Well, there's a smart cat feeder with built-in facial recognition that's looking to lend a hand. Bistro is a high-tech feline food and water hub with sensors that monitor consumption. There's the requisite camera to distinguish between members of your in-home pack and the furry creatures stand on a scale that measures their weight while eating. All of the collected data is beamed to a smartphone app to keep you abreast of the activity while you're away for your "quantified cat." Heck, you can even watch your pets feast, should you choose to do so. If you're looking to snag one, act quickly to nab a Bistro for $149 instead of the full $249 price it'll carry when it launches in March.

  • Caturday: Mr. G, the coding feline

Sometimes coding can be soooo exhausting that you just have to lay down on your MacBook Air and take a nap... Mr. G (apparently short for Mr. Grumblecat) is a ten-month-old blue British Shorthair who provides top-notch development support to his human Eric Kelly. New fans of Mr. G will be happy to hear all of his stats: "He likes to sleep in places that seem like they would be very uncomfortable, like on a wooden tray. He loves to sit on my lap when I'm on the computer and watch what I'm doing. Another really funny thing that he does is that every night when we go to bed, he waits about 10 minutes and then comes into the bedroom with one of his toys in his mouth. His favorite food is trout." And lest you think that Mr. G actually lets Eric do all the work, we have proof that he's a hard worker: We'd love to see photos of your favorite feline soaking up the warmth of an Apple product, chasing a Magic Mouse, or just being a general nuisance while you're attempting to work on your Mac, iPad, or iPhone. Cats love to snuggle with anything that's soft and warm, and there's nothing softer than the rock-hard aluminum surface of a MacBook Pro. Whut? Aapparently reader Kevin Yapjoco's cat never got the message or is just really in love with Apple products, since it laid its furry little head on this MBP and went right to sleep. It really makes you wonder if Jony Ive uses cat-friendliness as a criteria for his successful design. So, you're a beautiful cat with gorgeous fur and lovely eyes, and your human decides to spend her time ignoring you. Instead of petting you and giving you all of her attention, she's moving her fingers around and staring at something. What do you do? Easy answer -- plop yourself down right where those fingers are moving. Petunia's human Diane Schirf told TUAW that "Petunia is jealous of the MacBook Pro and, when exasperated, resorts to lying across it because that will get attention." Petunia certainly got our attention as well! We'd love to see photos of your favorite feline soaking up the warmth of an Apple product, chasing a Magic Mouse, or just being a general nuisance while you're attempting to work on your Mac, iPad, or iPhone. What does the internet love more than cats? App-connected devices that let you feed and entertain the furry monsters when you're out and about. Kittyo is a coffee maker-shaped device designed to do just that, packing a webcam, laser and a treat dispenser. That way, you can check your moggies are safe, keep 'em entertained and drop pellets of kibble, even if you're at the office or on holiday. The product launched on Kickstarter, naturally, where it's already smashed its $30,000 target four times over. However, there's still time to make a pledge and get the Kittyo for $120, versus the $180 you might expect to pay if you waited until the product goes on sale in November.

Maybe she's checking owner/photographer Jim Koepnick's bank account, retouching a photo of her beautiful self, or just wondering what this thing is that her human spends a lot of time staring at, but Gabby seems to be looking at something very intently. Koepnick says that Gabby likes to jump up in his chair when he gets up to "see what I was doing." Perhaps I need to see if I can train Ruby the Internet Famous Cat to do editing work for me... Sometimes the name of a cat doesn't seem to fit its disposition or looks. That's the case with Tinkerbelle, the rather grumpy-looking feline in the picture above. According to her human, Joseph Veseli: My cat Tinkerbelle, don't let the name fool you, loves to lay next to the pillow I use to set my iPad. Well, every time I go to use it, she thinks I'm going to take it away from her and she tries to attack me! The picture is of her watching me to make sure I don't get her precious iPad!!! There is a way to stop that, Joseph -- buy Tinkerbelle her own iPad Air! • Flappy Bird may return with a warning, dev has three games in the works

    by

    03.12.2014

Flappy Bird creator Dong Nguyen said he is considering bringing his hit mobile game back to the market. While he's not actively working on a new version, it would come with a warning that asks players to take a break from the game. Nguyen said as much in a recent interview with Rolling Stone, one the first the indie developer conducted since he pulled Flappy Bird from Google Play and the iOS App Store last month, justifying the decision by deeming it too addictive. Nguyen said that messages he received from players accusing him of "distracting the children of the world" and that the game was "addicting like crack" reminded him too much of his own struggles in high school with Counter-Strike. Nguyen isn't done making games, however. He described three he's working on simultaneously, each with retro-style visuals and simple controls: a cowboy-themed shooter, a vertical flier named Kitty Jetpack as well as an "action chess game" called Checkonaut. The developer plans to launch one of the three games this month. [Image: Dong Nguyen]
