  • Fan-made Ghosts 'N Goblins sequel canceled over IP dispute

A Kickstarter campaign aiming to reboot Capcom's Ghosts 'n Goblins series, called Ghosts 'n Goblins - Demon World, has been removed from the crowd-funding site due to an intellectual property dispute filed by Capcom. The Kickstarter pledge drive was officially put on hold late last month as indie developer Phantasm Studios tried to secure a developers license, but it would seem the project is outright canceled now. Neither Capcom nor Phantasm has provided an official statement on the future of Ghosts 'n Goblins - Demon World. Phantasm originally aimed to make the game with or without Capcom's blessing when it launched the Kickstarter page back in October, citing a possible name change should Capcom disapprove of using the Ghosts 'n Goblins branding. "If we can't secure a developers license we will change King Arthur and the name of the game, but that is all," the Kickstarter page previously read. "Thankfully werewolves, demons, skeletons, reapers, ghosts, goblins, etc. are all public domain. The modifications will be so minor, the changes will be easy and will not change our release schedule." Phantasm Studios still has all of the info, including concept art, for the proposed game up on its site, though we're sure that won't be the case for long. Ghosts 'n Goblins - Demon World was originally planned for release on the Nintendo eShop, PlayStation Network and Xbox Live in the spring of 2015.

  • Ghosts'n Goblins Online resurfaces at Steam Greenlight

Capcom's twice-canceled MMO Ghosts'n Goblins Online may soon rise from the dead as a free-to-play online action game, pending community approval after its recent appearance at Steam Greenlight. Ghosts'n Goblins Online was originally slated as a multiplatform release in 2003, though development ceased prior to its completion. A second attempt, originally titled Magyechon Online, was seemingly canned as well. Seed 9, creator of the canceled Magyechon Online, is also behind the newly-launched Steam Greenlight campaign. Seed 9 announced that the revitalized Ghosts'n Goblins Online will feature co-op platforming, PVP combat, and frequent updates that introduce new items and upgrades. Ghosts'n Goblins set a new standard for platformer difficulty back in 1985, taunting players with its cruel enemy patterns both in arcades and on the 8-bit Nintendo Entertainment System. The series continued with 1988's arcade and Sega Genesis sequel Ghouls'n Ghosts, then reached its apex with 1991's Super NES release Super Ghouls'n Ghosts. Seed 9 notes that series veterans will want to try Ghosts'n Goblins Online's "Demonic Dimension" mode, which retains the series' traditional two-hit-death mechanic. Capcom-licensed MMOs have faced difficulty in making it to market, as the Neowiz-developed Mega Man Online was canceled last year. If Ghosts'n Goblins Online proves successful, Steam Greenlight might be the Blue Bomber's next destination.

The eShop cup spilleth over this week, with lots of great new releases for Wii U and 3DS. The Legend of Zelda gets two links to the past in Oracle of Ages and Oracle of Seasons. Both games are available for $4.99 each until June 20, and use a password system to interact with one another. The 3DS also gets The Denpa Men 2: Beyond the Waves, and on June 4, you can snag a demo for Project X Zone, the bizarre Capcom/Sega/Namco mash-up RPG. Meanwhile, the Wii U Virtual Console picks up Mega Man X and Ghosts N' Goblins (not to be confused with Super Ghouls N' Ghosts, which came out earlier this month). From now until June 6, purchasing one of these games will get you the other for half price. Finally, there's a Just Dance 4 sale going on – you can pick up the game or select DLC for 30 percent off until June 4.

So, that's where it went! Almost two years after it disappeared off the Virtual Console, the NES version of Ghosts 'n Goblins will pop out of the grave again on the 3DS eShop. Capcom announced today the classic will return next Thursday, October 25.Although the NES version of Ghosts 'n Goblins isn't available on the Virtual Console, the arcade version of the game is for 800 Wii points. Placing your controller or 3DS in a soft shell to prevent breakage after being thrown is recommended in either case.

Arthur has bested demons, specters and all manner of otherworldly monsters, but now he's finally found an unbeatable foe: Erasure. No, we're not speaking about the greatest band of all time -- we're speaking about actual, literal erasure. The NES version of Ghosts 'N Goblins has mysteriously vanished off of the Wii Virtual Console platform, leaving only the slightly more expensive, 800 Nintendo Point arcade version in its wake. Capcom hasn't formally explained why the NES version of the game disappeared, but it certainly isn't the first title to vanish off of Nintendo's downloadable games services without warning or cause. Ironically enough, our best guess for the reason behind these disappearances involve both ghosts and goblins. We'll see if we can get something a little more official than that.

We're treated to a surprise today from Capcom, something we didn't think we'd see in 2011: two Virtual Console releases on the same day! Bask in it, because even a single Virtual Console release is a rare event. This time, it's two of Capcom's announced arcade releases, Ghosts 'n Goblins and the shmup Exed Exes. Additionally, WiiWare is host to Disney's Jelly Car 2, a build-it-yourself racing game with realistic physics and weird, jiggly cars.%Gallery-113645%

Capcom continues to support the Virtual Console long after most companies have abandoned the service, announcing three upcoming Virtual Console Arcade releases for Japan. Black Tiger (an early candidate for Final Fight: Double Impact inclusion), Ghosts 'n Goblins (which is already available on Virtual Console in its NES form) and 1942 will be released in Japan in the near future. Though no announcements have been made about these titles' releases outside of Japan, recent Australian ratings show that Capcom is likely planning to launch some of its other Virtual Console Arcade games in additional territories. • Capcom iPhone games on sale

Gameloft isn't the only company having a sale this week -- Capcom has also put most of its iPhone titles on sale for Comic-Con: You can pick up the great Phoenix Wright for just $2.99, Ghosts 'n' Goblins, Dark Void Zero and Mega Man 2 for just 99 cents, or Street Fighter IV for $6.99. Good set of deals to choose from there. I think that big EA sale a while back set a precedent for price drops like this -- a nice discount on a game quite a few people have been waiting to play can definitely send it catapulting into the top lists on the App Store. Phoenix Wright is definitely worth $3 if you've never played it before, so that title specifically should really benefit from a sale like this.

  • Ghosts 'n Goblins now punishing iPhone players

Capcom has released a new Ghosts 'n Goblins game to, of all places, the iPhone. Ghosts 'n Goblins: Gold Knights features polygonal graphics like the PSP's Ultimate Ghosts 'n Goblins, and, for the first time, two playable characters: Arthur and new hero Lancelot, who each have different weapons and lifebars. We're going to assume that the difficulty of the series is tuned for iPhone play: Ghosts 'n Goblins games tend to be nightmarish in difficulty even with real d-pads and buttons, and porting that experience directly to the iPhone could only lead to tears. The lifebar from the PSP game will help, but even so we expect Arthur to spend most of the game in his boxers, as usual. One aspect that is definitely tuned to the iPhone: paid DLC. For 99 cents a pop, you can power up Arthur or Lancelot, get unlimited lives or unlimited access to magic, or even reduce the strength of enemies and eliminate magicians from the game. If you're feeling brave enough to take on the armies of Satan with just a touchscreen, Capcom is offering the game for $2.99 -- a discount of $2 -- until November 23. Capcom has revealed that its resident ghost and goblin slayer (and suspected never-nude) Arthur is coming to the iPhone. During a presentation at TGS (via GameWatch) the company revealed a new Ghosts 'n Goblins -- which uses a touch-based control scheme not all that different from the iPhone port of Resident Evil 4 and overlays 3D models on top of the series' 2D gameplay. GameWatch also reports the title will allow players to choose between two different heroes: Arthur and Lancelot. The game is highly reminiscent of Ultimate Ghosts 'n Goblins, a PSP game that also employed 3D models while retaining the classic 2D gameplay of the originals. There's no word on price or launch date, but we'll be sure to let you know as soon as it's announced.[Via Touch Arcade]

With a fresh Halloween upon us, Nintendo has settled on a horror theme for its latest update to the PAL Virtual Console. Nintendo restricting itself in this way could have gone tragically wrong -- they could have given us something terrible like Friday the 13th, for example -- but instead the results are ... really, really good. Castlevania III: Dracula's Curse -- NES -- 500 Nintendo Points Devil World -- NES -- 500 Nintendo Points Ghosts 'N Goblins -- NES -- 500 Nintendo Points Normally we'd whoop unashamedly for Ghosts 'N Goblins alone, but Castlevania III, which is yet to be released on the U.S. or Japanese Virtual Consoles? And Devil World, which North America has also been waiting on (for almost a quarter of a century)? Yeah, we'll take those. Watch bone-chilling footage of all three past the break.%Gallery-21879%

As predicted, the arrival of December the 10th on your calendar coincides with the release of Pokemon Snap on the Virtual Console. Of course, you all know about the added feature to the Virtual Console edition of the N64 game by now. Well, hopefully this opens up a whole new world of possible improvements to other Virtual Console games in the future.Today's Virtual Console releases are: Pokémon Snap (Nintendo 64, 1 player, 1,000 Wii Points) Baseball Stars 2 (NEOGEO, 1-2 players, 900 Wii Points) Ghosts 'n Goblins (NES, 1-2 players, 500 Wii Points) And, as usual, be sure to stop back here later for our video wrap-up of the week's releases.

It's another week of high quantity on Japan's Virtual Console -- but that doesn't necessarily mean that, when employing their shovel, Nintendo didn't pick up some good stuff. In fact, overall, this is a very solid Virtual Console week, featuring five games new to the VC in any region. We're pretty likely to at least get Ghosts 'n' Goblins soon in the U.S., and Eternal Champions's Japanese release makes an upcoming release pretty likely. We're hoping for Nuts & Milk ourselves, just because the name makes us laugh every time we see it. Not because of any prurient reason -- we just think it looks like a shopping list. Ghosts 'n' Goblins (Famicom, 1-2 players, 500 Wii Points) Nuts & Milk (Famicom, 1-2 players, 500 Wii Points) Eternal Champions (Mega Drive, 1-2 players, 600 Wii Points) A-Train III (PC Engine, 1 player, 800 Wii Points) Top Hunter (Neo Geo, 1-2 players, 900 Wii Points)

  • Ultimate Ghosts 'n Goblins gets tweaked

Ultimate Ghosts 'n Goblins on PSP is one of those games that's so hard, you hate yourself. Well, it looks like Capcom is going back to the game and making a few revisions -- but will it make the game any easier? Not really, according to 1UP. The game will be more akin to the arcade original, limiting the number of continues that gamers have and restricting the ending of the game to those that beat the game ... twice. However, players will be able to get the double jump from the get-go and play levels out of order. That's a plus, no?This interestingly tweaked version of the title will release in Japan this August. However, considering how specific these updates are, we find an American or European release to be highly unlikely.

  • IGN gives Capcom Classics Collection Reloaded an 8.0

Never to be left out when it comes to beating a dead horse/stealing your money/delivering the goods on past franchises, Capcom is getting in on the retro kick by releasing Capcom Classics Collection Reloaded, which is based on the PS2 version, Oct. 24.The game stuffs nearly 20 of Capcom's greatest arcade games, like Street Fighter II and Ghost 'N Goblins, onto one tiny UMD, and IGN recently got their grubby little mitts on a copy and thought it was a pretty solid title, giving it an 8.0.While they had generally nothing but good things to say about the collection, they did note that "the game does run into the same noticeable flicker and aliasing issues present in the PS2 disc (in all the shooters), while the transparency effects are hindered by some obvious interlacing troubles."Aside from the obvious things like how well the games play, a classics collection really benefits from additional and unlockable content, and Capcom didn't skimp out here. "In fact, there are almost 900 different collectibles that can be uncovered over the course of your play-through, and an interesting slot machine mechanic is used to find them (you're awarded tokens for playing through individual games which can then be gambled with to unlock secrets," IGN wrote. They close by saying, "Reloaded is a solid PSP anthology that's better than its predecessor and one I'd easily recommend for old-school gaming fans everywhere." Mark me down for being totally excited for this one. Knights of the Round is one of my all-time favorite beat 'em ups, and to have it available on the go, has me giddy like a school girl.
