WoW Moviewatch: Standing in the Way of Control
Standing in the Way of Control by Gnomechewer was an instant classic when it was released, and it's just as awesome this very day. Not only is the video amazing, but it combines with the song to absolute mastery. Even better? There's actually a story. I'll let Gnomechewer explain it: Originally, it was an abstract re-telling of the whole Old Durnholde instance... until i realized I used Stormwind troops instead of Lordaeron... o well. WoW Moviewatch: Gilnean Like Me
Today in WoW Moviewatch: Staff Picks, we look at that which remains the favorite machinima of Mr. Rossi. Gilnean Like Me is not only an overwhelmingly stylistic feast for the eyes but a sort of escapist machinima for those Gilneaophile who felt done wrong by the game's storyline. Why would we feel that way? I'll let Mr. Rossi explain: The lyrics work perfectly - it's exactly what SHOULD have happened in Gilneas. Forsaken show up, Forsaken die again. It's not that we dislike the Forsaken. They're the nicest bunch of cannibalistic undead you could ever hope to meet. It's just... the Gilneans wouldn't have just rolled the tummies over. WoW Moviewatch: Back In Your Head
To quote Gnomechewer, the creator of this video, you should "just know that the love you squander today may end up being the love who is killed by a group of 5 people only to later come back as one of the Wretched who serves an Eredar demon lord and you'll never get another chance after all that noise." Or to paraphrase, in Back In Your Head, Jaina gets told. Ziebart wanted to shout out to Gnomechewer while we're reviewing some of our staff favorites. And he's absolutely right; Gnomechewer does some absolutely amazing stuff with his videos. In this odd pop payback song, you get to see the Kael'thas and Jaina "romance" taken in an entirely different light. It's a lot of fun and a little mesmerizing to watch. We've featured The Interrogation before, but this is a great season to go back and look at some old favorites -- especially since the ghostly soundtrack to Gnomechewer's video is especially appropriate to this time of year. I was recently reminded about this video by reader Jacob. It was a pleasant reminder, of course, considering this video has always been one of my favorites. Gnomechewer's eye for creating engaging scenes and haunting narratives is amazing. Remember that this video was created back in 2008. WoW Moviewatch: Dream an Emerald Dream
Today's Moviewatch features the return of a legend. I want to be clear that I'm not being sarcastic or satirical here. Gnomechewer has always been a fan favorite, and a hero to many machinimists. His work was not only fantastic in its own right, but also inspired a whole generation of new machinima artists. It is with great joy that I share the news that he's come back around, with the release of Dream an Emereald Dream.According to Gnomechewer, this video might not make a lot of sense. It's because he was feeling rusty, and jumped right in to re-hone his old skills. In the face of that commentary, I still found this video entertaining and gorgeous to look at. If this is Gnomechewer at "rusty," you can imagine what his "back in practice" is going to look like.I want to close by saying "Welcome back, Gnomechewer!" Here's hoping he keeps on keeping on. WoW Moviewatch: Rise from your Grave
This review will actually be a little difficult to write, but mostly because I don't think the editors would like it if I spent the entire time typing "Oh my god, look at the cute undead gnome!" over and over again. I'll have to rely on "content" and "writing" to get by.Rise from your Grave is a quick story-based music video by Little Sweegy. Turns out, Little Sweegy is Gnomechewer's girlfriend. She dedicates the movie to him, thanking him for helping her learn how to create machinima. It seems like he's done one hell of a job of teaching, because Rise from your Grave is an awful lot of fun.I like the grainy effects used to give the video a semi-horror feeling, or maybe just a nostalgic vibe. The gnomes running around in action is pure win, and a welcome relief for anyone who might be a little Belfed-out right now. Also, I find the idea of a Gnome Death Knight raising companion warriors from the grave to be absolutely compelling, in every way I can imagine. If my own Death Knight weren't already created, I might be rolling an undead Gnome even now.Great job, Sweegy! I can't wait to see more from you. Interested in the wide world of machinima? WoW Moviewatch: Trident of Naz'jan
Gnomechewer's Trident of Naz'jan has actually been floating around for about a month, which makes it a shame we haven't picked it up before now. I'm actually very happy to see it, as I'd worried we'd lost the music video superstar to Age of Conan. This is one of my favorite pieces by him, and totally worth the watch. I'll fess up at the beginning that the music isn't entirely my style, but within the context of the movie it works wonderfully.As the story of the video goes, those dastardly mist-men called Vrykul are (or have been) summoning That Which Devours from Below, Naz'jan. This is related to the opening Tuskarr quests in the Borean Tundra, so if you like the video, take the time to go check those out.Overall, though, I really like that Cthulu-esque "deep one" kind of feel. The strident heavy metal captures the mood of the Vrykul (c'mon, no instance is as "metal" as Utgarde Keep). Even the opening soundtrack voiceovers give you a good sense of impending doom. WoW Moviewatch: Homesick: The Making of a Supervillain
Gnomechewer remains one of my favorite machinimators by far, and his most recent work doesn't dull those feelings at all. Homesick: The Making of a Supervillain (which you can also see on Vimeo) continues Gnomechewer's history of blending game footage (not just WoW, you see a bit of Garry's Mod as well) with music that absolutely fits the tone. It helps that my musical tastes are pretty similar to his, admittedly. Not everyone will see his choices the same way I do, for sure.For some reason, I also find myself fascinated with the way Gnomechewer blends the pulp medieval setting of Warcraft with modern day technology and communications. Warcraft has always had some element of technology which I've adored, but that level of modern technology isn't something I would enjoy in WoW itself. In this format, though, it's very intriguing. Another good example of this is his machinima Back In Your Head, which displays the effects of media and social networking on Jaina Proudmoore and Kael'thas Sunstrider's hypothetical celebrity relationship.The end of this particular video is a bit grim and a bit abrupt, which Gnomechewer said was a result of running out of HD space, but I still found the ending neat. Abrupt, but neat. It felt like enough of a twist that it wasn't too bad, but I find myself wishing hePreviously on Moviewatch...
WoW Moviewatch: Argent Crusade Salvation
Gnomechewer consistently dazzles the crowd with what he can put out in such a short period of time. He has such a gift for rewriting lore and putting a totally new spin on it. Argent Crusade: Salvation is no exception. Is it me or is he getting really good with his special effects?His latest story centers around Tirion Fordring overhauling the Silver Hand. He uses a voiceover by Caruu, as Fordring, to act almost as a transmission. WoW Moviewatch: My Violent Heart
Gnomechewer is back with another music video. This time, it centers around the Draenei and their departure from the Man'ari Eredar. Of course, as is typical with our beloved frequent machinimator, he has to tell the story with a song instead of dialogue. My Violent Heart is pretty catchy. Using footage, pictures, and lyrics, he paints a tale of the lore that could only exist in his mind. We interrupt your regularly scheduled Moviewatch to bring you this special broadcast from inside the mind of Gnomechewer. In Anasterian, King., he ponders what would happen if Anasterian Sunstrider came back. In the machinima he made to reflect Anasterian's return, he doesn't even cover half of the storyline that he envisioned. We're amazed at the level of creativity involved in Gnomechewer's short productions. We only wish that he'd focus on one idea and either create a longer video, or a series. Many machinimators feel inspired by movies they saw, or video games they played. Gnomechewer, the creator of The Pilgrim's Plight, found himself motivated by Fallout, a game that dates all the way back to 1997! In his World of Warcraft version of the old game's intro video, Blood Elves are enticed to live in Sunwell under the leadership of Kael'thas Sunstrider. Cinemassively: The Interrogation
Over on our sister site, WoW Insider, Gnomechewer is a crowd favorite. He is known for releasing outstanding, funny, creative World of Warcraft machinimas in increasing frequency. However, we never thought that we'd post two new releases over two sites on the same day because we couldn't keep up with his production schedule!The Interrogation focuses on an undead scout that is captured by the Scarlet Crusade, and then debriefed. The events in this WoW video take place in the kidnapped Horde's mind while the interrogation is taking place. WoW Moviewatch: There Will Be Cannibalism
It's only been about a week since we posted Gnomechewer's last machinima, Back In Your Head, but he's already back with a new one! There Will Be Cannibalism could be the closest thing to PvP that I'll ever enjoy posting here. It is a parody of There Will Be Blood, with Daniel Day Lewis, set to the disturbing sounds of a Britney Spears tune, Toxic. WoW Moviewatch: Animal I have become
In our daily quest for acceptable machinima to feature on WoW Moviewatch, it's very rare that we ever come across someone that we feel could end up as epic as Baron Soosdon, otherwise known as Rick Astley, Jr. Apein managed to start his path to greatness from his very first (and only!) video, Animal I Have Become. We haven't been this impressed with an up-and-comer since Lagspikefilm and Gnomechewer!Apein has some big shoes to fill, but he already has a blog, where he posts teaser shots of his work in progress, and knows to upload to Vimeo. We were also impressed that he was able to keep the aspect ratio intact throughout, not get excessive with Model Viewer, blend platforms, and not go super crazy with the effects. However, we do object to the heavy blurring and the random zooms in and out. WoW Moviewatch: The Crimson Sisters of the Scarlet Flame
In Gnomechewer's fantasy world, there is a sect of the Scarlet Crusade, Our Lady of the Sacred Flame, from which a further subset of women are recruited into, called The Crimson Sisters of the Scarlet Flame. Headed by High Inquisitor Whitemane, the Sisters answer to no one but her. Their tasks are typical Order fare, except they deal with them more intensely.Gnomechewer did a great job on this machinima that dates back to January 2008. WoW Moviewatch: Under Contract
Gnomechewer is back with a brand new movie, Under Contract: The Explorer's League, but for all we know, it could be his last WoW machinima. According to his video page, he's rather attached to Age of Conan now. Come back to us, Gnomechewer! You don't need AoC!Under Contract is about two dwarves and their friends that are contracted by the Explorer's League to carry out missions. Unfortunately, I'm not sure that Gnomechewer properly conveyed the story that he had in mind this time. He mentioned that he rushed through a lot of it, and he seems to have mixed a jumble of things together so that it makes no sense. WoW Moviewatch: Rogues Do It From Behind, a Saphira interpretation
The submission deadline for the L70ETC music video contest has passed, and the contestants are starting to upload their work to Warcraftmovies. That's where we found this interpretation of Rogues Do It From Behind, by Saphira. This machinima was obviously model viewed, but I think the editor did a pretty good job, despite having quite an awful song to work with. Cinemassively: Super Duper Ultimate Extreme Edition
With the sheer number of World of Warcraft machinimas produced daily, it's not hard for a talented up and comer to stay under the radar. Such was the case with Gnomechewer, who never received a recommendation from Warcraftmovies, yet captured the typically hostile audience of our sister site, WoW Insider. In the last 15 months, he's made 21 films, ranging from silly to quite stellar.One of his semi-recent films, Super Duper Ultimate Extreme Edition, is an excellent example of model-viewing done right. The background music, by Notorious B.I.G., only adds to the ambiance of the environment. SDUEE has all of the action, adventure, and excitement that you need from a WoW machinima.
