  • Lips patch brings microphone compatibility to Rock Band

Our super sophisticated estimation process has it that a whole 2.89 of ya even care that Microsoft's Lips microphone won't work with Rock Band or Guitar Hero, but we're about to make just south of three Earthlings a lot happier. Harmonix and MTV Games have been working with Microsoft to provide compatibility (via a patch) with Rock Band 2, though there's no definite date to latch on to. Alright Activision, the bar has been set -- you up to the challenge?[Via Xbox 360 Fanboy]

From day one, the nifty (and wireless) light up microphones for Lips have just been screaming for Rock Band 2 support. Or, more to the point, we were screaming into the microphones hoping the folks at Harmonix would heed our call. Looks like everyone out their can rest their weary vocal chords, because Microsoft and MTV Games have announced that Rock Band support for the Lips microphone is on the way. Mutliplayer reports a joint email statement, in which the two companies said, "Microsoft and MTV Games are working together to ensure that consumers will be able to use the wireless mics from Lips with Rock Band 2 after launch." No specific date is mentioned, but here's hoping the support arrives sooner rather than later.[Via Joystiq]

What rocker wouldn't want to add a little sparkle to the mic? Lips developer Keiichi Yano said it could be done. Microsoft and MTV Games say it will be done: We "are working together to ensure that consumers will be able to use the wireless mics from Lips with Rock Band 2," confirmed a statement received by MTV Multiplayer. There's no set date for the patch, but we can expect Harmonix has marked this task a priority in its obsessive conquest to make any and all third-party instruments compatible with Rock Band -- and, in turn, we'll be sure to update the Matrix in our own obsessive conquest to chart any and all instrument compatibilities. Muwhaha!

What gift do we want most this year? The ability to get the Lips ... "lips" out of our minds forever. That likely being impossible due to their (its?) extremely disturbing nature, we'll settle for some holiday ballads as DLC for the game. Oh, look, Microsoft has some, as promised! Here's what's going to be available, this week and next – complete with original, holiday-themed videos – "starting at" 160 ($2). We note a disturbing lack of Adam Sandler's "Hanukkah Song."Friday, Dec. 5 Blue Christmas – Elvis Presley The Dreidel Song – Sister Hazel It's the Most Wonderful Time of the Year – Andy Williams Friday, Dec.12 Rudolph The Red-Nosed Reindeer – Gene Autry Rockin' Around the Christmas Tree – Brenda Lee A Holly Jolly Christmas – Burl Ives The Christmas Song (Merry Christmas To You) – Nat King Cole Santa Baby – Kylie Minogue White Christmas – Bing Crosby Hanukkah Blessings – Barenaked Ladies

Black Friday, whether you view it as America's most chaotic consumer spending spree or simply as an excuse to shove everyone between you and a $3 toaster, is a critical retail event for console manufacturers. According to Microsoft, the Xbox 360 enjoyed record sales during the frantic shopping period, amounting to an increase of 25% over last year. The company can't resist claiming victory in a battle that doesn't involve the Wii -- the Xbox 360 is said to have outsold the PlayStation 3 by a factor of three.Microsoft also expressed satisfaction with software sales, with Gears of War 2, Fable 2 and Lips (yes, the karaoke game) leading the way. We'll have to wait until November's NPD results are out until we can see just how well each of those titles fared.

Announced during E3 with the glitz and excess of a live performance by Welsh singer Duffy, it was obvious that Lips was Microsoft's attempt to create a music platform for the Xbox that would lure in the same gaming crowd as Sony's SingStar. With the promise of karaoke party fun, high tech motion controlled microphones and images of walking lips seared into our brains, we took Microsoft's Lips for a musical romp. • Metareview -- Lips (Xbox 360)

    by
    Alexander Sliwinski

    11.20.2008

For big kids, karaoke is dependent on friends, good track lists and alcohol. Remove any one of those elements - especially the alcohol - and there's probably going to be a problem. So, it's not unexpected when potentially sober and lonely video game reviewers get their hands on Lips, it's going to result in some scattered scores. Given Europe's long-standing history with SingStar, it's really not surprising to see Eurogamer's writeup on Lips being less a review and more a comparison between the two franchises. Videogamer (80/100): "It's the only game of its type on the 360, it's got brilliant microphones and it at least tries to allow you to expand the potential track-list to infinity. If you like karaoke, and you have friends or family that like karaoke, it's a damn sight better in-law entertainment option than charades this Christmas, and for that we should be eternally grateful" Kikizo (80/100): "While the ability to sing to your own music collection has its problems, overall Lips is absolutely brilliant fun, as well suited to a Saturday morning with the kids as it is a late return from the pub. In the end, that's what this kind of game should be about, and as a rival to SingStar, Lips can happily call itself equal. " Gamespot (65/100): "The wireless microphones are convenient and innovative, and they make it difficult to go back to corded models afterwards. The song selection is also excellent, with 40 songs that are varied in style but united in anthemic quality. That said, the game's lack of camera support, vocal playback, and simple online functionality disappoint, especially given their proven success in Sony's SingStar series. Even worse, the nonexistent difficulty level means this is a game with practically no appeal for single players, aside from those who want to collect the easy achievement points." Eurogamer (50/100): "But the saddest thing about Lips is that it suffers in comparison to SingStar's gameplay. We've long moaned about legacy issues with SingStar - that it can't cope with vibrato, punishes you for tailing off at the right time, and has a bit of lag in audio playback - but despite Lips' fancy mics and superficial improvements, it's too easy, too isolated from other players, and too buggy. The irony is that SingStar has glitches as well, now and then, and casual gamers seem to put up with this, whereas Microsoft - architect of the Red Rings - has little goodwill left to cash in on that front. Casual or not, though, you should only buy this if you can't get SingStar."

Okay, so Joystiq posted a commercial for Microsoft's new karaoke title Lips. We've watched it and now we need to pass it on to you. Just like the tape from The Ring, we get the feeling that passing this video on is the only way to stop the curse that we were undoubtedly infected with when we first watched it. Go ahead and watch it and you'll understand. Having done that, we suggest you pass it along as well, lest the bogey-lips haunt your dreams and destroy your soul with song.Find the video after the break.

  • Lips mic incompatible with Rock Band / Guitar Hero (at launch, anyway)

    by
    Darren Murph

    11.18.2008

Anytime we hear the words "incompatible" and "music game" mixed into the same sentence, we typically can't resist the onset of a bitter beer face. That being true, we can't say we're too terribly bummed about this one, particularly since we highly doubt Microsoft's Lips will have the same following as Rock Band and / or Guitar Hero: World Tour. At any rate, you should probably know that the accelerometer-packin' Lips microphone will not work with RB nor GH at launch, though creator Keiichi Yano of Inis did confess that compatibility was theoretically possible with future patches. 'Course, we doubt anyone will spend time on said patches unless Lips moves like a billion copies this winter, but we suppose anything is possible with a snap of the fingers and a pinch of pixie dust.[Via Joystiq]

We're a little very confused as to what Microsoft is attempting to achieve through this TV spot for its karaoke title, Lips, which releases this week. Is it trying to sell the game – or cure any suffering narcoleptics who happen to see it of their inability to stay awake? If the latter's the case, we salute Microsoft on trying to make life better for sufferers of the condition. If not, and it's just a video game ad, we're not sure people will even want to leave their houses to buy the game, for fear of running into this ... thing. Or even ordering Lips online ... only to have a bipedal mouth appear at their door, the package clutched in its teeth.Weird, wonderful, or WTF? You've read the headline and you're probably thinking, "Oh, great. Just what we need. Another article effusing praise for Left 4 Dead. Thanks. Thank you so much." In truth, yes, we're excited that Left 4 Dead is coming out this week, but the reality of the headline is best understood by glancing at the list below. There are twelve, twelve new games being released this week. If that's not enough to metamorphose every respectable gamer into a gibbering, cash-starved zombie, we're not sure what is.
