Apple releases Mountain Lion Preview 4 and iOS 6 for developers, iTunes 10.6.3 for everyone else
Looking to tame Apple's Mountain Lion? Step right up, Cupertino's latest build of OS X is ready for consumption -- assuming you're a registered developer, of course. Following WWDC's reveals and teases, Apple has released an updated preview of its desktop and mobile operating systems, serving up Mountain Lion Preview 4 and an iOS 6 beta to developers. The rest of us will have to console ourselves with iTunes 10.6.3, which adds support for the mobile and desktop OS' those fancy devs are getting their hands on. Don't worry, the updated music management software will be able to make full use of Mountain Lion next month, but you'll have to wait until this fall to sync with iOS 6. You got it. The latest version of Mac OS X is coming in a matter of weeks, and will set you back just shy of twenty bucks. If any of those new beastly, Ivy Bridge-decked machines made you reconsider your bank balance, breathe a (small) sigh of relief -- you'll be treated to a free upgrade if you decide to buy one before Mountain Lion arrives in July. Mac OS X 10.5.6 is available via Software Update
Apple's support page and Software Update appear to be a little bit hammered --- you know what that means: A new OS update! Mac OS X 10.5.6 has just been released to Software Update. The ~190 MB update (assuming you are already running the latest version of OS X) offers up the following, according to Apple's Support Page: Various improvements to performance and stability in Mail.app, iCal, Airport and Safari Graphical improvements DVD player performance improvements A new Trackpad panel in System Preferences for portable Macs Time Machine and MobileMe improvements Other various fixes. The whole support page lays out the improvements with more accuracy than we often see from Apple and there are security updates too. Security Update 2007-009 for Leopard now available
If you've been wondering when we'd see a security update for Mac OS X Leopard: you can stop holding your breath. Apple has just pushed out Security 2007-009 for Mac OS X 10.5.1. So what's been fixed? According to the release notes: Core Foundation Flash Player Plug-in Quick Look Safari Shockwave Plug-in and plenty more The update, which as ever is recommended for everyone running the latest big cat, weighs in at 35.6MB. If you're wanting to go ahead and install the update without waiting, you'll want to run over to the Apple Support site and grab the file, or simply run Software Update on your system. As with all OS X updates, we'd strongly suggest you have a working backup before installing on any mission-critical system.
