Indie Royale is hosting a lightning deal over a span of 100 hours, serving up five indie titles from one niche franchise -- Serious Sam. The Indie Royale lightning deal includes Serious Sam: The Random Encounter, Serious Sam Double D, Serious Sam: Kamikaze Attack, The First and Second Encounter and the world premiere of Serious Sam: The Greek Encounter, an 8-bit top-down demake. These indie homages to Serious Sam launched alongside Serious Sam 3: BFE last year, each taking a different approach to revamping the franchise. The Indie Royale lightning deal marks Serious Sam: Kamikaze Attack's premiere on PC, previously being a mobile title. As with all Indie Royale deals, the earlier you buy, the cheaper the minimum price -- although people paying more than the minimum can bring down the price for everyone. So don't put down those scissors or those bombs, and run like lightning!

  • The Joystiq Indie Pitch: Serious Sam: Double D

Indie developers are the starving artists of the video-game world, often brilliant and innovative, but also misunderstood, underfunded and more prone to writing free-form poetry on their LiveJournals. We at Joystiq believe no one deserves to starve, and many indie developers are entitled to a fridge full of tasty, fulfilling media coverage, right here. This week, as part of a three-part series, we're featuring the creators of the Serious Sam indie series. Today is Nathan Fouts of Mommy's Best Games, talking no-joke gun-stacking in Serious Sam: Double D. What's the name of your Serious Sam indie offering, and how does it play? Serious Sam Double D launches Sam into the second dimension and grants him actually-over-the-top abilities, like the Gun Stacker, which is a suite of robotic arms that allow him to carry all of his guns at once [Ed. note: Or carry all of his chainsaws, a feature added thanks to commenter greyson97 on this Joystiq article, because that's how indie development rolls]. Sam fights Mental's hordes in new temporal dimensions, encountering classic enemies like the evil Kleer skeleton and the headless Kamikaze, but also new, deadly oddities like the jet-packing Chimputee, and the bristling Etanoh Salvo Spider. Sam must disable teleportation beacons placed in each time period before his hordes completely invade and wipe out civilization.

The title will be available via "digital PC game services like Steam and Get Games" for $8 starting August 30. Lest you've forgotten Double D, it's the latest from Mommy's Best Games and, more importantly, let's players stack guns on top of other guns, thus creating an even more powerful gun. See the feature explained in the handy video above..

  • Dreams come true: Serious Sam: Double D has a four-chainsaw Gun Stacker

They say that dreams don't come true, and they're right, as our utter lack of bacon-generating jetpacks can attest. But the one place that rule doesn't apply is in the Joystiq comments section. Want proof? Check out the above comment, from our post about Serious Sam: Double D's brilliant Gun Stacker. Inspired by this comment, the hard-working staff of Mommy's Best Games went and ... you guessed it: PUT 4 CHAINSAWS ON IT. Check out the gallery for the proof and get ready to believe in miracles.%Gallery-127357%

Remember that scene in Aliens where Ripley tapes together the pulse rifle and flamethrower? Now imagine doing that with five guns. That's the concept behind Serious Sam: Double D's weapon stacking mechanic -- and it looks as cool as it sounds. Designer Nathan Fouts of Mommy's Best Games (Xbox indies Weapon of Choice, Shoot 1UP and Explosionade) has posted a look at the inner workings of the Gun Stacker system on the developer's blog. It explains the mixing and matching of firearms from top to bottom, from finding hidden weapons and the requisite Gun Stacker arms, to the interface used to bolt them together -- there are even some dev tips for ... interesting combinations. Try as we may, we haven't been able to successfully stack chainsaws, tommy guns and grenade launchers onto our laptops after reading the post, but you can see how crazy it would look (minus the laptop) in the gallery below.%Gallery-122210%

  • The most important thing about Serious Sam: Double D

Professional game critic though I may be, I don't have too much in the way of valuable insight to offer about Serious Sam: Double D, Mommy's Best Games' entry in the Serious Sam Indie Series. Blending the run-and-gun dual-stick action of Mommy's Best's Weapon of Choice with Serious Sam's ... headless dudes with bombs for hands works as well as you'd think. No, the most important thing about the game I can relate to you is elegantly conveyed by the above screenshot. While many games will let you wield a shotgun, machine gun and plasma rifle, only one game will supply you with an item that lets you stack all of them together and fire them simultaneously. The Gun Stacker: Let it never be said 2011 was without innovation.
