'Star Trek: Voyager' gets an unofficial 4K remaster thanks to AI

As with Deep Space Nine, Star Trek: Voyager is unlikely to ever get an official high-resolution remaster. The effects were shot on video rather than added to film after the fact, making it much harder to upgrade the quality than it was for The Next Generation. However, an unofficial project might get relatively close. Series fan Billy Reichard has started processing Voyager with a machine learning program that upgrades that '90s era image quality as much as possible. You won't forget that the show was made for tube TVs given the aspect ratio, but the AI is surprisingly effective -- it produces something you probably wouldn't mind watching on an idle afternoon if you're a Star Trek devotee.

This article contains spoilers for the first season of 'Star Trek: Picard' up to episode nine. Star Trek: Picard is the show I've been looking forward to for 17 years. Not because I was particularly interested in finding out what happened to Picard, Troi, Riker and the rest. (But don't get me wrong, it's nice to check in with old friends.) Instead, it's because we finally get to see what happens next in the Star Trek universe. We finally get to see it grow, both ideologically and technologically.

When you're out exploring the Delta Quadrant, you want people around you who have been there before. It's a big, unfriendly place, after all. Star Trek Online players will have a bit more help than they had previously expected, though. In addition to Tim Russ (Tuvok) and Garret Wang (Harry Kim) reprising their roles from Star Trek: Voyager, Ethan Phillips (Neelix), Jeri Ryan (Seven of Nine), and Robert Picardo (The Doctor) will be making appearances in the game. No details on these appearances have yet been revealed, although Neelix is likely still in his role as ambassador, and the game's backstory has Seven of Nine working with the Daystrom Institute. It's likely that more lore will be uncovered as the expansion approaches its release this fall. [Source: Cryptic Studios press release]

The big secret surrounding Star Trek Online's mystery guest in the upcoming Season 8.5 featured episode is out: Tim Russ, who played security officer Tuvok on Star Trek Voyager, will be lending his voice talents to reprise the role. Russ' Tuvok is now an admiral and will be encountered by players in the episode A Step Between Stars. He said he's thrilled to see where the franchise has taken the character: "I like the fact that it's a future story, that it's picked up from where we left off." Tim Russ is the latest of many Star Trek alumni who have provided voice-overs for the game, including Denise Crosby, Michael Dorn, and Leonard Nimoy. You can check out an interview with Russ about his recording session after the break.

I'm what you might call a 'casual Trekkie', I enjoy the TV series and loved the latest movie so I was quite curious when this timeline was revealed last week. Star Trek Online takes place well past the events of the film and Voyager so I bet I'm not the only one who is eager to find out what happens next. Well as part of the run up to the game's release, the STO devs have been posting pieces (called The Path to 2409) looking at the game's future history as well as fictionalised interviews with important characters within the game and the franchise itself.Their latest post is an interview between roving reporter Jake Sisko and Ambassador Worf and adds more pieces to the 'prime' universe and the game's backstory which I find completely fascinating. Indeed all the posts, from interviews to straight-up historical ramblings, are a must-read for Trekkies anticipating the release of Star Trek Online.

Wait, what? Star Trek is now cool you say? What is my nerdy self going to cling to? What's going to make a geek above other geeks as I recite the Klingon alphabet backwards in the Qo'noS dialect? Here's something that is going to shock you: I'm a big Star Trek fan. I know, who would have thought that a tech blogger (aka geek) would have a soft spot for Star Trek? Having said that, I never really got into Voyager. It might be because I never had a chance to see them in order, so the show wasn't able to work its way into my heart like the other series. However, I can now buy the first season of Voyager via iTunes for $30.99 (or pick and choose for $1.99 an episode) and give Voyager a second chance. The price even seems like a bargain seeing as how Amazon is selling the DVD set of Season 1 for close to $100 (though that set comes with extras that the iTunes version lacks).
