  • EndWar Online is a free-to-play MOBA-like running in Flash

Ubisoft Shanghai is preparing a free-to-play entry in the Tom Clancy's EndWar series called EndWar Online. Running in Flash, EndWar Online is completely playable in the browser and focuses on quick, frenetic 1-v-1 skirmishes. I was able to play a sample match at Ubisoft's Digital Day event lasting all of four minutes, highlighting EndWar Online as a speedy one-on-one variant of the established multiplayer online battle arena (MOBA) formula seen in League of Legends. The hook is a balanced unit system where each vehicle is inherently designed to counteract another vehicle on the battlefield. Players, choosing a faction to permanently align themselves with and then battling to control lanes feeding into the enemy base, must play to the units already on the battlefield. If the enemy is encroaching with tanks, it's wise to spawn helicopters and attack from above – though the enemy could spawn surface-to-air missile trucks and destroy air vehicles in retaliation. It's this constant tug of war in each isolated conflict that made EndWar Online feel tense. Battles are waged across a fictional post-apocalyptic planet, trashed from nuclear war. As factions win battles and control territories, bonuses are spread across those factions to other players on a timed basis. The spoils of war then carry into the next conflict. Players can sign up for a closed beta that is expected to launch before year's end, though Ubisoft hasn't announced an official launch date for EndWar Online yet.

Prepare to get your brutality, fantasy, and strategy on, as Darksiders 2, Kingdoms of Amalur: Reckoning, and Tom Clancy's EndWar are all arriving on PlayStation Network November 20. This week's PlayStation Blogcast confirmed the trio of PS3 digital releases.Darksiders 2 recently got its second downloadable content pack, Abyssal Forge. Developer Vigil Games claims the DLC has some of the toughest enemies in the game. But, as the saying goes, Death laughs in the faces of a game's toughest enemies, or something. According to the podcast, the PSN version of Darksiders 2 includes a pass to the game's Crucible arena, and the official soundtrack.Eccentric shoot-em-up Sine Mora lands on PSN next week too, for PS3 and Vita. Grinding onto Vita via PSN is Jet Set Radio, free for PS Plus users until the end of the year. Clan of Champions and the fifth episode of The Walking Dead will be available online for PS3.

  • Impulse holding El Presidente's Day weekend sale

Sure, officially, Impulse is holding a President's Day sale this weekend, featuring some of your favorite strategy and sim titles, but an "El Presidente Day" sale sounds so much more exotic. The highlight of the sale, particularly to anyone who doesn't think democracy is the only way to rule, is the banana republic simulator, Tropico 3, for half-off at $7.50. For those who cling to democracy and letting the unwashed masses have a voice, The Political Machine 2008 is only $3 and Democracy 2 is $11.50. However, if that whole "government" thing sounds messy, and you believe the only reign worth having is one in which you can declare full-scale war, Command and Conquer 4 and Tom Clancy's EndWar are $10 apiece.

  • EndWar dev excited about Natal's RTS possibilities

Speaking with VG247 at the Develop Conference in Brighton, UK, EndWar development boss Michael de Plater said that he thinks Microsoft's Project Natal could reinvigorate the console (and PC?) RTS market. Comparing Natal's potential "power" and "precision" to menu scrolling in the film Minority Report, Plater anticipates Natal's combination of voice and gesture control to potentially be "really powerful and immersive." During E3 2009, Ubisoft showcased the upcoming RTS RUSE on Microsoft's touch-screen-enhanced Surface table. While Plater knows the $12,000 home furnishing isn't going to be a regular household accessory, Project Natal has the potential to work with software in a similar fashion. "If the technology works -- so you could translate the interface they've already got working really well on RUSE into Natal -- it could work very, very well." Hopefully Microsoft will reveal when Natal is hitting stores and what the device's final price will be soon and Joystiq won't have to put so much money into developing its own set of drug-addicted "precogs."

  • EndWar launch trailer is a total downer

So, if we have this right, the point of the EndWar launch trailer is that World War 3 is basically inevitable. In addition to this, it's apparently going to be awesome, what with giant firefights breaking out right in front of the US Capital Building, France's Eiffel Tower, and even the Kremlin. Seriously though, why not? If the world just has to be embroiled in a massive war, said war might as well take place in some dramatic places, right? Just because we're doomed doesn't mean we can't end it all with a little flair. The game, incidentally, drops next week.

Here's one for you. Two parrots playing the voice controlled Tom Clancy's EndWar. Really, need we say more?No joke, the official EndWar video you see above features two talking birds named Walter and Polly who are sitting on a custom apparatus and talking into Xbox Live headsets while their "owner" instructs them on tactical EndWar maneuvers. We're not sure what to make of the video, but it did get us thinking. What other animals could be taught to play EndWar? We have a cat that can sorta meow the alphabet. His name is Tubby.

Fans eager to engage in some voice-activated, real-time strategy on their favorite handheld systems ... will have little interest in the rest of this post! Ubisoft has detailed the PSP and DS versions of Tom Clancy's EndWar -- both of which launch alongside their bigger console brothers on November 4th -- and made it apparent that warmongers on the go are in for a markedly different experience.Developed by Funatics Software, the portable pair presents "turn-based strategy with a twist," allowing simultaneous move and attack phases which render the experience as intense and authentic as real-time strategy -- it says here. Other relevant features include three campaigns, over 20 units per faction, a two-player versus multiplayer mode, a mission editor, stylus controls on the Nintendo DS and, judging by the screenshots, somewhat less realistic graphics. Who knew advanced wars could be so colorful?%Gallery-34915%%Gallery-34916%

And the game actually looks pretty decent, if you're into war, RTS games, things that are voice controlled or stern, military sounding women's voices. Check out the vids and share your brutally honest opinion of Endwar and its voice controls.

Attention future squad commanders. The latest UbiSoft title with Tom Clancy's name stamped on its cover -- Tom Clancy's EndWar -- is nearly upon us and the folks at The U (aka UbiSoft) have seen fit to offer a training program for very special members of the platoon. So to recap in English. An exclusive demo of Tom Clancy's EndWar will be available for those who pre-order the title at their local GameStop. Are you one of the crazy people who assumes you are able to walk into a game store and buy a game without an outlined plan? Ha! Well, for those who aren't pre-order fans UbiSoft is currently holding a contest for access into the super-exclusive VIP demo when it launches.BTW - spoiler alert for EndWar, the war won't end. If it did what would the sequel be called? Tom Clancy's Fluffy Pony Adventures? Think about it.

From making rival gangsters offers they can't refuse, to using your voice to command soldiers not to refuse orders, these fresh-off-the-editing-computer videos from EA's The Godfather II and Ubisoft's Tom Clancy's EndWar are presented for your viewing pleasure (and "Should I pre-order either of them?" evidence pool). The EndWar trailer is the same one being trotted out at the Leipzig Games Convention 2008; the first look at EA's gangster sequel was shown to the press last week at the publisher's annual Studio Showcase. Update: Descending upon the footage with ninja swiftness (we assume) the video leak of EndWar has been pulled. With the beta ending in a few days we recommend that anyone attempting to do it again just let bygones be bygones and wait for some new, non-NDA footage. Or at least don't mention us 'cuz we think you're crazy!A few weeks ago we reported an EndWar beta tester leaked footage of the upcoming Tom Clancy RTS title -- non-disclosure agreement be damned. While reactions to our report of the leak were mixed, Ubisoft ended the controversy by putting the kibosh on the video. A little over an hour ago the same tester took it upon himself to upload a new clip of the beta -- which ends on July 7 -- taking our joking advice to "get a capture card, buddy."While we don't condone the action or recommend that anyone leak footage of anything under NDA, we chuckled when our name came up. At least we know someone listens to the dog and pony show that is the Xbox 360 Fancast. Also to give credit where it's due, it was our commander-in-chief (Rich) who threw out the capture card recommendation. Check out the footage above, before Ubisoft sends out the lawyer-ninjas.[Thanks, Keller]

Feeling down because you weren't selected to participate in Ubisoft's closed beta of Tom Clancy's EndWar? Well, pucker up soldier! Today Ubisoft has released more beta codes to gamers who have yet to hear back regarding the test, which ends on July 7. Still shrouded behind a curtain of NDA mystery, the RTS console title began initial online testing of its multiple modes and three multiplayer maps on June 17 with a rumored 15,000 players. No word on whether Ubisoft plans to release a third wave of codes for the beta or if the NDA will lift prior to the end of the test. Tom Clancy's EndWar is scheduled to release fall.[Thanks to everyone who sent this in]

Tipsters are going mad! Mad we tell ya! Today Ubisoft has been shooting off emails to registered users inviting them to register for a chance to beta test Tom Clancy's EndWar. The Xbox 360 exclusive open beta is scheduled to run for three weeks between June and July and allow users to the real-time strategy game online in 1v1 or 2v2 matches across three multiplayer maps.Registration is now open for the open beta and Ubisoft reminds registrants that this is an actual beta and bugs are probably going to occur. Oh and remember kids, you need an Xbox Live Gold account, at least 3GB of free hard drive space (a bag full-o-memory cards won't do!) and a pocket full of hopes and dreams to get into the beta that's sure to fill up fast. If you are lucky enough to be selected for the beta you will be notified by Ubisoft at a later time.[Thanks to everyone who sent this in]
