Engadget Review

DJI's Mavic Air is a testament to the company's innovation. With pretty much no other big player in the game, it could have eased off the gas on features, but the Mavic Air comes packed with sensors, a high quality camera, onboard storage and flies like a dream. The hardest decision, might well be what color to get it in.

The Mavic Air really is the best of both worlds offered by the Mavic Pro and the Spark. It has a slightly improved camera inside a smaller body than either the Pro or Spark. It likely still won’t satisfy those that need something for commercial work — that’s better served by DJI’s Phantom or Inspire line — but for the rest of us, the Mavic Air is the drone to beat.

The Air is about as close as the market has to offer to a true entry-level drone that’s capable of capturing excellent video. It’s a worthy little gadget for photographers and videographers looking to add another tool to their arsenal.

Although you may not consider it cheap, the Mavic Air is astounding value for money. It's the most advanced consumer drone you can currently buy and shoots great-quality video and panoramic photos. The Quickshot modes are brilliant, there's best-ever obstacle avoidance and it's small enough to carry everywhere with you. Ultimately, this is the drone you've been waiting to buy.

DJI has cherry-picked all the best features and stuffed them into the Mavic Air.

A small drone with huge ambitions, the DJI Mavic Pro packs 4K video recording, a three-axis gimbal, an upgraded obstacle avoidance system and onboard storage into a compact and foldable form factor that easily slips into a jacket pocket. You’d be hard pressed to find a better drone that packs up so neatly and has as many smarts as this one.

Is the DJI Mavic Air right for you? That depends. If you were already considering the Mavic Pro, it’s worth giving the Air a very close look — it’s got comparable specs, it’s easier to pack, and it’s got some hardware improvements to boot. But if you don’t need to shoot 4K video or RAW images, going with the Spark could help you save some money. If you do get the Mavic Air, don’t forget extra batteries. In my testing, the drone stayed airborne for about the advertised 21 minutes of battery life. But it’s so fun to use, you’re going to want to keep flying a whole lot longer than that.

An amazing amount of tech in a pocketable drone, the DJI Mavic Air is the best travel drone you're going to find right now.

The best non-professional drone you can buy, the Mavic Air takes flying cameras to new gadget heights.

This is the smallest 4k drone we have ever flown. Buy it if you need a tiny but capable drone. Don't buy it if you're looking for a low light monster.

If you need extra range and battery life, the Mavic Pro is a fine choice. But otherwise, the Mavic Air has everything you need in a much smaller package. It's actually extraordinary what this little thing can do. So much so I can safely say there's nothing else like it on the market. At least not until, DJI decides to build another crazy little aircraft.
