This is superzoom for the aspiring professional. But we didn't find it to be as pro-grade as it's Alpha equivalents ... But don't take that the wrong way. There are some awesome things about the RX10 that a camera with a larger sensor wouldn't be able to do. The main one that we found was close-up focus.

This camera is exactly what's needed to shake up the bridge camera market. Offering a great deal of flexibility, in an admittedly pricey body, it'll be interesting to see what the consumer makes of it.

The RX10 is being positioned as a step-up camera for point-and-shoot users and even some DSLR owners. The camera is priced at $1,300 -- considering that you'll often spend that much for an f/2.8 zoom lens alone, it'll likely appeal to a variety of photographers.

With a camera body that resembles a Digital SLR, and the weight to match at 755g (body only), the Sony Cyber-shot RX10 features a Carl Zeiss Vario Tessar T* 8.3x optical zoom lens, equivalent to 24-200mm in 35mm terms, with a constant f/2.8 aperture.

Arguably the most interesting aspect of the zoom is the constant maximum aperture of f/2.8 throughout the extent of the focal range, a feature that will be welcome amongst wildlife and sports photographers alike.

Indeed the RX10 turned our initial expectations on their head and got us wondering why such a camera hadn't made it to market before. It's niche, but it's nifty - it's definitely caught our attention, even if it won't convince everyone.

The Sony Cyber-shot RX10 is expensive for a compact camera, although could be considered somewhat unique, featuring a bright zoom lens, and a larger sensor, which makes the value for money rating difficult ...

The RX10 is very nearly perfect as an all-in-one video/photo machine, as long as you don't mind sacrificing pocketability, and don't need the professional image quality of a DSLR (very few do).

The Sony Cyber-shot DSC-RX10 is a bridge-style camera that gets just about everything right, and its steep asking price reflects its impeccable quality.
