Apple's 'Amazing Stories' revival loses showrunner Bryan Fuller
Apple has yet to launch any of the original shows funded by its $1 billion war chest, but it's already losing part of its production team. Hollywood Reporter has learned that showrunner Bryan Fuller (of Star Trek and American Gods fame) has left Steven Spielberg's Amazing Stories revival for the tech giant. The departure was "amicable," according to sources, and stemmed from creative differences. Reportedly, Fuller wanted to make a Black Mirror-style show that wasn't what Apple intended.

Cliff Eidelman (pictured) famously penned the ominous score for Star Trek: The Undiscovered Country after (first pick) James Horner was too expensive. Now, the composer has revealed that he was in the running to produce the soundtrack for Star Trek: Discovery. The job eventually went to Jeff Russo, but Eidelman chose to continue working on the project since he was never tied down to a contract. As a consequence, the musician has published a four-track look into an entirely different form of theme for the series.
'Star Trek: Discovery' is set 10 years before the original
It was Bryan Fuller's turn to take the stage at the Television Critics Association press tour and spill the beans about his vision for Star Trek. The producer has revealed that Star Trek: Discovery will be set roughly a decade before the original Trek and will be set in the prime universe. Fuller has also explained that the sets and uniforms will be closer to 1966's primary-colored hues than the gunmetal grey and denim of Enterprise. In addition, the series will be 13 episodes long and serialized, with each episode a chapter, although each episode will have a satisfying resolution for HBO-phobic fans.
Netflix will air the new 'Star Trek' series outside the US
Netflix has announced that it'll be the exclusive home of the brand-new Star Trek TV series, and will broadcast the show globally next year. When it was announced, CBS revealed that only the first episode would air on TV, with the rest of the episodes exclusive to the network's own streaming service. But since CBS has no digital footprint outside the US, Netflix will bring the show to the rest of the world -- except for Canada. If you live in the great white north, you'll be able to get your Trek fix via Bell Media. It wasn't long ago that Netflix also won the rights to all six existing Star Trek shows, which will be available in 188 countries around the globe. Each episode will arrive on the service within 24 hours of its arrival in the US, mirroring the distribution strategy for other high-profile shows where spoilers are a constant threat.
New 'Star Trek' has a showrunner from the final frontier
Star Trek fans have had a tumultuous last few months. But it seems that amid the recent ups and downs (a fan film getting shut down by CBS and Paramount most definitely qualifies as the latter), news of the upcoming streaming exclusive finding a showrunner with Trek in his blood should ideally register as a win. Whether you count yourself among the Rodenberry faithful or are just a TV addict, the name should ring a bell: Bryan Fuller. He wrote for Deep Space Nine and Voyager in addition to working outside of the final frontier where he's been a scribe and executive producer on the criminally short-lived Hannibal.
