Zopo C2 phone with Aliyun OS hands-on (video)
We were rather surprised by Zopo's C2 (aka Xiaohei) when it was announced last month, and fortunately, it didn't disappoint us when we spotted the real thing at GMIC Beijing. For those who are just catching up, this Aliyun OS 2.0 phone packs some surprisingly good specs for its ¥1,399 ($230) price tag: a 5-inch 1080p LTPS display, a 13-megapixel main camera, a 5-megapixel front imager, a removable 2,000mAh battery and dual WCDMA 850/2100 SIM slots -- one for a standard SIM and one for a micro-SIM. During our brief hands-on, the software ran well on top of the 1.2GHz quad-core MT6589 SoC with 1GB RAM, though the built-in 4GB storage will definitely need some microSD love, as we kept seeing a warning message about low storage space. Industrial design-wise, the C2 is quite well-built, and while it's not the most exciting-looking phone in the world, we're just glad that Zopo is finally no longer ripping off designs from the likes of Samsung, HTC and LG. Zopo C2 embraces Aliyun OS, boasts 5-inch 1080p display, 5MP front camera and a low price
Despite the aborted launch of Acer's Aliyun-powered phone last September, the cheeky Android-based OS is now back with a handful of new devices courtesy of some local friends, with the most notable device coming from Zopo, a notorious cloner of Samsung, HTC and LG phones. That said, it looks like the company's making a change with this seemingly good-looking C2, and for the launch price of ¥1,399 or about $230 unsubsidized, the specs will probably make Xiaomi tremble: there's a 5-inch 1080p gapless LTPS display, a MediaTek MT6589 chip (1.2GHz quad-core Cortex-A7 processor with 1GB RAM and PowerVR SGX544 graphics), 4GB internal storage with microSD expansion, Yamaha audio chip, a removable 2,000mAh battery and WCDMA 850/2100 radio with HSPA+. Furthermore, not only is there a 13-megapixel f/2.2 main camera, but there's also a staggering 5-megapixel front-facing camera on the other side -- just like the one on Oppo's Ulike 2. Oh, and these all come in an 8.5mm-thick body, too. Zopo's now accepting pre-orders for the first 5,000 C2s and will be shipping before the end of the month, so if you have an account on Tmall and don't mind being a guinea pig then go for it.%Gallery-185899%
Cowon C2 portable media player review
And here you were assuming the tried-and-true PMP was dead. Au contraire. Cowon's not giving up on its dream quite yet, but after the D2 hung around at the company's low-end for the better part of four years, it's an alphabetic step backwards that's taking over as the successor. The diminutive C2 is about as simple as a PMP gets -- design wise, anyway -- but it's actually capable of supporting both music and video on its 2.6-inch resistive touchpanel. And then there's the purported 55 hours of battery life, included microSD card for expansion and the company's world-class audio quality. Still, $135 goes a long (long!) way in the portable music industry these days -- does the C2 pack enough punch to make your short list? Head on past the break to find out. %Gallery-127150%
Nokia debuts C2-03 at CommunicAsia (video)
Nokia's Mary McDowell announced the company's third dual-SIM device, the C2-03, at CommunicAsia. It's a portrait slider with a 320 x 240 touchscreen display paired with the company's Touch and Type interface. Like the C2-00, it's based on S40 and supports Easy Swap -- a handy feature that lets users hot swap their SIMs. Additionally, the phone sports a new version of Nokia's web browser that compresses data up to 90 percent, and Nokia Maps for Series 40 -- which provides location search and routing while offline. Amazingly, standby time is rated at a hearty 400 hours, and while the built-in memory is somewhat paltry (10MB), the storage can be expanded up to 32GB. It's expected to be released in Q3 for €77, and will roll out across India, China, the south-east Asian-Pacific region, Eurasia, the middle east, and Africa. The C2-02, a single-SIM variant will debut alongside the more intriguing sibling, but we know you're most interested in the dual-SIM darling, so hop past the break for an extended peek.
Clickfree C2 Rugged hard drive can fall down, backup
There's just something about the phrase "built to strict U.S. military standards" that makes us want to go positively medieval on a rugged device. Sadly, the aforementioned qualifier doesn't mean that Clickfree's new C2 Rugged Back-up Drive is capable of withstanding, say, a hail of gunfire, but the rubberized disk will continue to work after being dropped from four feet. The peripheral also features the company's Easy Run software, which will start automatically backing up your PC when you're done showing that storage device who's boss. The 500GB C2 is available now through Clickfree's site for $140 -- or $100, if you're one of the lucky 100 first people to buy, so maybe buy two, in case you go a little overboard.
Cowon's minuscule C2 PMP picks up where the D2 left off
At this point, Cowon's D2 (and to a lesser extent, the D2+) is getting a bit long in the tooth, and it looks as if the Korea-based outfit will be taking an alphabetical leap backwards in order to supplant it. The newly revealed C2 is slated to land at the end of April or early May in order to give barebones PMP users yet another alternative, boasting a 2.6-inch resistive touchpanel (320 x 240), a composite video output, microSD expansion slot, 4/8/16GB of internal flash storage, USB 2.0 connectivity, an internal microphone and a rechargeable battery that's good for up to ten hours of video playback (and a whopping 55 hours when listening strictly to audio). Per usual, Cowon's supporting every file format under the sun (and the moon, for good measure), and we're expecting nothing less than world-class aural performance based on the company's past. We're still waiting to hear back on a price, but you can use your limbo time wisely by deciding on white, black or gray. %Gallery-120698%
Samsung spices up the USB 3.0 hard drive party with three new models
It's not the first time that Samsung's pimped up their hard drives with some USB 3.0 goodness, but come April, the Korean giant will be delivering three new product lines that are yet to be named. The first one is a basic portable model that goes up to 1TB, and comes encased in a smudge-resistant matte housing with a choice of four colors. The next one up is simply a premium version of the portable drive that not only looks prettier (as pictured above), but also beefed up with auto backup software and 256-bit Full Disk Encryption. A USB dock will be available for both portable lines. Last but not least, those looking for more storage space (and presumably faster spinning speeds) can turn to the desktop version, which will be available in three flavors: 1TB, 1.5TB, and 2TB. Nokia C2-01 and X2-01 break cover: cheap to the max, launching soon
Symbian and MeeGo might be getting all the attention, but for Nokia, Series 40 is still very much a meat-and-potatoes part of the operation -- and to that end, they've announced a pair of new models today that go exceptionally easy on the pocketbook. First up, the C2-01 (pictured left) is claimed to be the cheapest 3G handset in Espoo's lineup, featuring a 3.2 megapixel camera, FM radio, Bluetooth, and memory expansion up to 16GB atop a 2-inch display; it'll be available in the first quarter of 2011 for around €70 ($95). Next up, the X2-01 certainly looks like a Symbian device from a distance -- but don't be fooled, it's still straight-up Series 40 with a full QWERTY portrait keyboard. It's got a dedicated music button (Nokia's quick to point out that the Xseries' focus is music, after all) along with a 2.4-inch QVGA display, VGA camera on back, and memory expansion to a relatively meager 8GB. Neither WiFi nor 3G are included, but at €80 ($109) subsidy-free, you wouldn't necessarily expect them. Look for it to hit shelves this quarter.
Nokia's C1 and C2 series try hard not to break even the smallest of banks
It looks like Nokia's conversion from the time-tested four-digit naming scheme to the one-letter, one-number strategy may be nearing completion now that the company has announced a new series of ultra-low end candybars that all have homes within the Cseries. The C1 is actually a three-pack of phones -- the C1-00, C1-01, and C1-02 -- all of which feature Nokia's longest standby time ever (quoted at six weeks) along with a color display, integrated flashlight, 3.5mm headphone jack, and FM radio; the 01 and 02 variants add microSD slots, while the 01 also features a VGA camera and the 00 becomes Nokia's very first dual-SIM device to hit the market. The C2 is also a dual-SIM device, but unlike the C1-00, the C2 can keep both SIMs active simultaneously, meaning you'll be able to get calls and messages to either SIM without manually switching. It's got a microSD slot and a SIM slot, meaning that one of the two SIMs is hot-swappable -- a pretty unique feature if you've got an endless supply of lines that you want to be able to use without hassle. Look for the C1-00 to hit in the third quarter for €30 ($37) subsidy-free, the C1-01 early in the fourth quarter for €39 ($47), and the C1-02 and C2 both to come late in the fourth quarter of the year for 35 and 45 ($43 and $55), respectively. Clickfree adds hassle-free migration, other features to C2 backup drive (video)
Quite a lot has happened in the world of Clickfree since it went a little crazy at CES, but we're pretty jazzed about its latest effort. The predictably titled C2 is little more than a tweaked and refreshed version of the original backup-inclined external hard drive, but the boost in features makes this one worth considering. Available with a built-in USB cable and an even easier backup interface, the C2 can now handle automatic iPod music / playlist imports, direct-to-DVD burning, improved media sharing and a lovely migration feature that makes the arduous process of moving from Windows XP to Windows 7 a lesson in simplicity. The drive will be available in 250GB (C2 227; $139.00), 500GB (C2 527; $199.99) and 350GB sizes, with the latter to be made available in January 2010. Taser reveals Music Player Holster for your C2
So yeah, Taser International is indeed introducing a leopard print C2 "personal protection device" here at CES, but honestly, that's not what caught our eye. Rather, the MPH (Music Player Holster) -- which is a 1GB DAP / C2 holster combination -- has absolutely and completely captured our imagination. Regrettably, little else is mentioned about the device, but the way we see it, it's all we needed to finally push us into ordering a C2 to call our own.[Image courtesy of MSNBC]

With all the wall mounted TVs today, we're always looking for new ways to make sure our expensive investment toy is protected. Taser International's C2 taser on sale now
While we're not exactly sure whether to be pleased or concerned that Taser International recently posted record quarterly sales, the firm's C2 consumer stun gun is nevertheless hitting the market. As of this week, civilians who fear for their life or have severely rambunctious children can snap up the C2 at a number of retail locations, and those interested can look forward to wires that fire 15-feet and carry 50,000-volts in order to "temporarily incapacitate a person." Interestingly, Taser must know that there's quite a few proactive ladies that are pondering a purchase as well, as the consumer C2 will reportedly be available in a variety of colors -- including pink. Iocell's rugged mDrive: built to last a decade
Iocell's been known to unleash USB drives that differentiate themselves quite effectively from the masses, and the firm's latest offering is no different. The ultrathin mDrive reportedly weighs in at just three grams, is available in capacities ranging from 1GB to 4GB, and is built to withstand just about anything nature throws at it. The water-, heat-, and shock-resistant drive is just marginally larger than a penny, but can reportedly archive data up to ten years and be written to "more than one million times" before calling it quits. Additionally, the drive will support the company's Castella Builder software, which purportedly allows you to transport applications and settings from one machine to another without any hassle. Sony launches myriad of Vaio updates, including SZ4 and FE40 lappies
Moderation is the conspicuously absent ingredient in CES releases, and it looks like Sony is sticking to the recipe with its new Vaio spec bumps -- minor as they may be. First off is the Vaio C2 series of laptops, which keeps close to those 13.3-inch stylings of the original C series, with a brand new "rediscovery blue" color (pictured) to keep things fresh and a media friendly X-black display. Specs are relatively unchanged, but Sony is packing Vista into all of these new laptops, so that's worth remembering. Sony's SZ4 13.3-inch ultraportable Vaios haven't budged a whole lot on specs either, with T7400 Core 2 Duo procs now in the high end, and of course Vista Business pre-installed. The FE4 media laptops do a similar jig, with X-black LCD technology, Double Lamp illumination, and a Core 2 Duo T7200 processor, but little else. The fashionable Vaio N20 laptops adopt X-black tech as well, but don't even manage do break free of their Core Duo shackles -- hopefully they didn't break free of that sultry "wenge brown," either. Finally, Sony's recently updated Vaio LA2 all-in-one desktop gets the Vaio and X-black love, but understandably little more. Most of these models look to have received RAM and HDD bumps to make way for Vista, but it's still a pretty weak showing, despite the sheer volume of updates. No word on prices or availability, but we're figuring that since Vista isn't out until the 30th, we've got a few weeks to wait. A couple more shots after the break.
