When Remedy Games released the original Max Payne in 2001 it changed video games in a real way. And the same can be said for Dennaton Games and Hotline Miami 11 years later. Well, it's been an awful long time coming, but the developers at Vreski are almost ready to unleash The Hong Kong Massacre on PlayStation 4 owners.

'Quantum Break' studio's next project isn't what you expect

Historically, Remedy Entertainment has only worked on one project at a time, releasing only a handful of games since 2001's Max Payne. The company recently announced it was moving away from that fan-frustrating workflow and was becoming a studio that has more than one iron in the fire at a given moment. Now, a few months after the fantastic Quantum Break, we know what one of the team's next projects is: creating a campaign for the next installment of free-to-play shooter CrossFire, the aptly named CrossFire 2.

Quantum Break is the reason you should buy an Xbox One if you already haven't, but if you want to see an HD version of where developer Remedy Games basically got its start, you'll need a PlayStation 4 this week. That's because the first Max Payne is hitting the PlayStation Store -- in Europe, at least -- on April 22nd. There's no word on whether this will make its way to the US or how much it'll cost if it does, but last month when Rockstar Games' Bully and Manhunt debuted on the European store, they arrived domestically shortly thereafter for $15 each. Oh hey, if you'll remember, Rockstar published Max Payne too.

'Quantum Break' is a legitimate reason to buy an Xbox One

Almost three years after the Xbox One's debut, it's getting its biggest and arguably first real exclusive. Quantum Break won't be available on other consoles, it isn't a sequel, nor is it multiplayer-only. It's the latest game from Remedy Entertainment, the studio behind the Max Payne and Alan Wake franchises. And it couldn't come at a better time for Microsoft, either: In a matter of weeks PlayStation 4 owners will have Ratchet and Clank and Uncharted 4: A Thief's End, and Wii U owners get Star Fox Zero. If Xbox One didn't have an exclusive of its own right now, it'd be the odd console out. Good thing, then, that it's Remedy's best game yet and the Xbox One finally has a AAA showcase for what it's capable of.

We'd been wondering where Rockstar Games' promised Android version of Max Payne Mobile had gone after missing its original April release window, but the company has at last narrowed down a release for its third-person revenge shooter on Google's OS. The game swings by Google Play on June 14th, although the nature of the platform means Rockstar is only vowing support for certain phones and tablets. You'll find the whole list at the source link, but it's safe to say that you'll want a higher-end Android device made during the past year by Acer, ASUS, HTC, LG, Medion, Motorola, Samsung, Sony or Toshiba. Thankfully, the $2.99 price will cover either form factor and gives you every excuse to take down Valkyr-peddling thugs on New York City's streets.

Two high-profile games, one from Rockstar Games and one from Electronics Arts, hit the iOS App Store today. The most anticipated of the two is Max Payne. The third-person shooter was originally created by Remedy Entertainment for the PC, and Rockstar Games then ported it to the major gaming consoles. Now fans of the series can fire up the dark action game on their retina iPad and iPhone. The other major title is Burnout Crash from EA. This is another game in a long-standing series that was originally developed by Criterion Games. The car driving title lets you speed through cities while leaving a wake of destruction in your path. Max Payne Mobile is available for US$2.99, while Burnout Crash will set you back $4.99. Both titles are universal games that'll run on the iPhone and the iPad.

Are you a smartphone user with an itchy trigger finger? Listen up. Rockstar Games has announced that the one and only Max Payne will begin terrorizing your iOS and Android devices in the very near future. The wares will be available for Apple-branded gear (iPhone 3GS, 4 and 4S, along with the iPod touch 4 and all iPad iterations) on April 12th, and Google's implements two weeks later on the 26th. Max Payne Mobile is promising to deliver HD graphics, high resolution textures and exclusive content via the company's Social Club service to your miniaturized screen. Rockstar did not elaborate on which Android sets would be supported, but promised to publish a full list "in the coming weeks." Limber up those thumbs, charge up that handset and get ready to lay waste to... pretty much anything that moves.

Another oldie but goodie is getting the iOS treatment, and if you loved the original Max Payne you'll be buying this one. I've never found the controls on these games where I want, but word is the Payne update will offer some customization for touchscreens. Look for more of that here, with HD graphics and the requisite Social Club connectivity and that good old bullet time action. Rumor says Max Payne for iOS will be available April 12. There will be an Android version on the 26th.

  • Blu-ray releases on January 20th 2009

Many are more excited about the inauguration than this week's Blu-ray releases, but there are a few good movies. The most interesting to us Universal's The Express, but then again we're a sucker for football movies. Next up is Max Payne, which looks fun, but has a really bad IMDB score of 5.6. Just about every studio has at least a few movies this week, but another worth mentioning is a catch-up title for Blu-ray from Universal in the way of King Kong. Next week is about the same with one hot day-and-date like Pride and Glory and a few great catalogues like The Bourne Collection. The Express (Universal) King Kong (Universal) Max Payne (Fox) Antwone Fisher (Fox) UnfaithfuL (Fox) 13 Going on 30 (Sony) The Pink Panther (Sony) Amusement (Warner) Domino (Warner) The Notebook (Warner) Poison Ivy 4: The Secret Society (Warner) Repo! The Genetic Opera (Lionsgate) Saw V (Lionsgate) Election (Paramount) The Deal (Peach Tree Trinity) El Norte (Criterion) Henry Poole Is Here (Starz/Achor Bay) Igor (MGM)

  • Beau Bridges steps out of Stargate, onto set of Max Payne

The list of names for the upcoming Max Payne movie adaptation continues to grow as Stargate SG-1's Beau Bridges has become the latest actor to join the cast, following the addition last week of That 70s Show and Family Guy's Mila Kunis as an as-yet-unnamed assassin. Bridges looks to step into an altogether different role as a character named B.B. Hensley, which The Hollywood Reporter describes as "a former cop and mentor figure to Max Payne, who helps him track down a cunning, ruthless killer." The storied actor has played a number of different roles over the course of his career, but after three years of associating his face with that of Stargate's Major General Hank Landry, it's difficult for us to imagine him watching Mark Wahlberg's back without wanting him to pull out random quotes from Patton or Dr. Phil.

We know, we know. We just brought you some Max Payne info and a pic, but for fans of the series, this new nugget was just too interesting to pass up. According to Variety, That 70s Show and Family Guy's Mila Kunis has just joined the cast as "an assassin who teams up with the title character to avenge her sister's death." If you're familiar with the series, that sounds like it could be Mona Sax, even though the character's name hasn't been revealed yet. We're a little bit nervous about the casting, as we've never seen Kunis in something that's required her to be particularly hard-boiled, but we guess everybody has to start somewhere. What say you?[Via AICN]

We're going to be honest and admit that we still don't get the Max Payne movie project. It's been five years since the last game in the series, and the brand power in the mass market has to be hovering around nil. We weren't even sure we believed it last month when we heard that filming was to start this month. That was, until we received this pic of Mark Wahlberg on the set of the film.To us he looks ... well, like Mark Wahlberg in a dark jacket. But since Max's face has looked completely different in both of his games, we don't know exactly what we expected. But if you're in the Toronto area, you may be able to help us get a better idea of how things are coming along. One of our readers sent in a list of shooting locales and times where you might be able to catch a glimpse, we've put it right after the jump. You know where to send it if you find anything juicy.[Via Eurogamer]

We know it's been a while since you've heard anything about the Max Payne series of games, and don't worry: You won't be breaking your streak today. What you are going to hear about is an upcoming Max Payne film starring ... wait for it ... Mark Wahlberg. Yes, the former Funky Bunch CEO is reportedly going to be grimacing his way through an adventure based on the noir series. John Moore of Flight of the Phoenix and Behind Enemy Lines fame will direct. What's just as (if not more) exciting to us it that we doubt Rockstar will miss the opportunity to cash in on the film with a new Max Payne, and, frankly, he's been gone too long.

The latest issue of Game Informer has details on 3D Realms' Earth No More, likely one of their two "big announcements" expected within the next six months. The title is being developed for PC, Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 by Recoil Gamers, reportedly made up of former Max Payne developers.Earth No More centers around a New Englander caught in the middle of an outbreak in a town surrounded by poison, terraforming vines -- it may sound a lot like War of the Worlds, but these vines are (gasp!) part of a man-made catastrophe! The game will play out without cutscenes, à la Half-Life 2, and the article (via CVG) claims that human interaction will be the focus of the title, "with a conversation mechanic said to rival that of Mass Effect." Bit of a bold statement, given that BioWare's RPG is still not finalized (or dated, for that matter). There will also be online co-op.Earth No More is tentatively set for a 2009, or 12 A.D. (i.e. After Duke Nukem Forever was announced), release.

3D Realms has some big announcements coming in the next six months, but nothing about Duke Nukem Forever, according to new creative director Raphael Van Lierop."I can say that we have a big announcement coming in the next four weeks, and I'm not sure, but I believe we have another major announcement coming in the next four to six months," he said in an interview with Gamasutra. "While I can't say exactly what these are, are they about Duke Nukem Forever? No."Since beginning the DNF project just over a decade ago, the company has managed to release 12 titles, which can be summed up as Prey, two Max Paynes and nine Duke Nukem iterations. Van Lierop said that their business model benefits from a "very collaborative relationship" with other developers. If DNF isn't one of the company's next two big announcements, then we'll likely see another partnership, perhaps the Prey sequel that 3DR's CEO Scott Miller told Firing Squad in February was already mapped out from a "high-level story standpoint." The first big announcement will coincide with this year's E3 Media and Business Summit. Fun fact: In the span of two questions, or 521 words, in the interview, there are 9 mentions to Duke Nukem Forever, totaling 27 words (with only one of those references by the interviewer). That's over 5% of the words used in that section!

Samuli Syvahuoko, the former co-founder of Remedy Entertainment -- the studio behind Max Payne and the upcoming Alan Wake -- has formed a new game company by the name of Recoil Games in Helsinki, Finland. With veterans from companies like Ubisoft, Guerilla Games, Electronic Arts and Codemasters, Recoil Games hopes to create hit games that will reach worldwide recognition, no small task. The company is currently working on an original IP inspired by classic disaster movies. The game uses a combination of in-house technology and 3rd party tools. The first Recoil Games project, still untitled at this point, should hit the Xbox 360, Playstation 3, and PC sometime in the near future.

I know most people only read reviews to find out if they should buy, try or avoid a particular game. With that in mind, here's that info on Chili Con Carnage for those who don't want to read a full review. Buy: If you love Max Payne, Total Overdose or action games in general and don't mind humor mixed in. Try: If you haven't ever tried Total Overdose or Max Payne and are picky about humor and/or action in games. Avoid: If you dislike action games, humor in games or Total Overdose.
