    Scarcely a fraction of gamers are involved in MMOGs. The percentage is a little higher if you're a gamer over 25, but below that, the odds are that only 1-2% of gamers are into MMOGs. But the gamer market is expanding. That is, the number of gamers who are involved in MMOGs is growing at a rate less than a twentieth of the growth of the hobby. Or to put it another way, the pool of potential customers is growing much larger than the customers the industry already has, if only the industry can find a way to make MMO gaming, as a hobby, more attractive to gamers who have hitherto shown little or no interest in it. There are several approaches the industry has and is attempting in order to reach out into that broader pool of would-be players.

    Player vs. Player combat seems to be a love it or hate it scenario. Players either engage in the behavior with an extreme liking, wondering when their blades will get to silence a screaming newbie or go up against the best of the best in battlegrounds, or players hate the activity with a passion to the point where they'll avoid it as much as possible.In any case, this feature certainly has become a staple of MMOs, even going so far to have a couple games, like Darkfall, EVE Online, and Aion: The Tower of Eternity, making it one of their core focuses. So this leads to today's question: Do you think a game needs to include some form of PvP to be successful?   • GDC09: Hands-on with Aion

    To understand the game Aion, you first need a bit of background on its setting. Aion has many of the trappings you would expect to find in a typical fantasy MMO, but it is a completely original IP with some unique elements. As a player, you are a resident of Atreia, created by the deity Aion, and torn asunder by ancient war between the human races and the Aion's former servants, the Balaur. After millennia of struggle, the Balaur succeeded in destroying the Tower of Eternity, Aion's embodiment on Atreia, splitting the planet in half. In the game's present day, the Asmodians live in the harsh, frigid climates on the upper half of Atreia, far from the sun; while the Elyos live in the sun-drenched, tropical lower half of Atreia. Neither recall the details of the cataclysm that split the world and both blame the other for the destruction that befell Atreia.Today, fragments of the shattered tower have begun to drift through the heavens and mysterious portals have opened in the world, transporting the Asmodians and Elyos to the Abyss that lays between the two halves of Atreia. Here, they meet one another and their old, neigh-forgotten enemies, the Balaur.Unsurprisingly, war is at hand. In Aion's "PvPvE" system, you'll fight against both the opposing faction and the NPC Balaur at every turn as you seek to unlock the mysteries of the world around you. %Gallery-48588%

  • Aion: Ishalgen zone trailer

    The folks at IGN tossed up a trailer of the Ishalgen zone in Aion this past Friday. It's some pretty wild stuff; a flyby of the zone to a techno-styled string arrangement, showing off the impressive color scheme and varied landscape within the game. Not much action here, but it's quite the visual smorgasbord. Check out the video after the jump.

  • Aion's European community team makes the leap across the pond

    Going along with the continuous restructuring of NCsoft West, the European Aion community team has recently been invited to take the long swim across the Atlantic Ocean and join US community manager Liv in Seattle, forming a unified Aion community team.Sebastian "Ayase" Streiffert, the United Kingdom community manager, and Martin "Amboss" Rabl, the German community manager will be flying to the United States, while Loic "Atreid" Claveau, the French community manager, has declined the position in favor of moving to the marketing department in Brighton.Ayase, Amboss, and Atreid have all written blog posts reflecting on their individual decisions, and they can be read over at the Aion Europe community site. Amboss's and Atreid's posts have been written in their native languages, but it's nothing that a web translator can't handle. (And by handle I mean rip to shreds, but at least give you the general idea.)Welcome to the United States, Ayase and Amboss!

  • New Aion video explores the vibrant and beautiful Poeta

    Aion consistently amazes us with these video flybys of the various zones in the game world. Poeta, however, is exceptionally jaw-hinge-swinging due to its -- and we say this with a supreme amount of joy -- Final Fantasy XI and Guild Wars influences. Specifically, the music has a certain "Eff Eff" feel to it while many of the more tropical zones took us back to Maguuma Jungle in a wonderful way. Sitting in the most northwestern portion of the world, Poeta is certainly going to be high on our list of "must explore" zones once Aion is released into the wild stateside.   • Obama as you've never seen him before, an Aion character

    We're generally apolitical in terms of our content here at Massively, but this is something worthy of note: Obama in the fantasy MMO Aion: The Tower of Eternity? (We're sure this unscheduled appearance will come as a surprise to the President, himself.)NCsoft really didn't have this in mind when creating the game's lore, but some rather inventive beta testers have created something which show off just how good Aion's character creation is. The end result is a player-created video that depicts Obama in ways his publicity people never anticipated, as an Elyos 'kicking ass' and saving trees on the road to ascension as a Daeva... Yes, this may piss off a few people -- namely the POTUS -- but it's all in good fun. Check out the YouTube embed below the cut in high quality.

  • Aion: The Tower of Eternity lore moves forward in a world divided

    The fantasy setting of NCsoft's Aion: The Tower of Eternity, known as Atreia, is a world largely divided between the upper world dwellers called Asmodians and the lower world denizens, the Elyos. Once a single united people, the game's lore has been expanding, telling the story of how the rifts between Atreia's people formed. In the wake of the Epic Cataclysm, the Elyos and Asmodians have their own tales to tell. This is the focus of Chapter VII of the Atreia story. The Elyos tale continues with "The Abyss and The Storm Legion" while the Asmodian story is told through "Retribution". Both tales are accounts of the same event, told from opposed perspectives. Check out how Aion's lore is advancing through the dual perspectives of the Elyos and Asmodians in Chapter VII.

  • Aion video tour shows off the Altgard zone

    A number of fantasy MMO gamers who are looking for an aerial twist on combat, or simply the ability to soar, are looking forward to Aion: The Tower of Eternity. The latest title from NCsoft is expected to release sometime in Fall 2009, and the developer has been releasing a series of zone tour videos to stoke people's interest in the game. The latest video NCsoft has released shows off the Altgard Zone, with panoramic otherworldly scenes of the world's surface and even its subterranean depths.   • Aion's release date expected for fall 2009

    Localization is big, time consuming business, and NCsoft wants to make sure that they get it just right with the release of Aion: The Tower of Eternity. The US community manager, Liv, has just confirmed that NCsoft is seeking a fall 2009 launch date for the Western copy of the game that has already seen success in Korea.The game is undergoing a significant re-write of all of the narrative content instead of being simply translated and pushed out the door. What this should produce is a game without the standard awkward mistranslated phrases, incomplete sentences, and dialogue that doesn't word wrap properly.This style of localization is common amongst recent games that have crossed over into Western culture, such as the Megami Tensei Series and Odin Sphere from Atlus Games.   • NCsoft 2008 profits down and Guild Wars 2 TBA in 2010-2011

    After hearing recent news of NCsoft's lay-offs/restructuring at their European studio, it may not come as a surprise that their latest financial report for Q4 2008 is showing a 22% net income loss compared to Q4 2007 even though sales were up 11%. This loss was attributed to higher marketing costs for the quarter. Their overall 2008 net profits plummeted 40% compared to 2007. The high quarterly marketing costs probably had a lot to do with their Korean release of Aion, which accounted for 3% of their overall sales by games in 2008.What does this mean for fans anxiously anticipating the release of Guild Wars 2? It means you'll have to wait a while longer. According to an anonymous source and ex-NCsoft employee, the company is heavily focused on both Aion and GW2 right now. After a successful launch in Korea, NCsoft plans to release Aion in Japan and Taiwan in Q3 2009 and in the US and Europe in Q4 2009. With such a strong Aion push in 2009, it seems to leave little room for GW2 in the calendar year. Their strong dedication to each title might explain why GW2 was pushed into 2010-2011 when many fans were hoping for a 2009 launch. Given the marketing costs of promoting Aion in Korea, it would be quite a financial burden to promote both titles simultaneously around the world.

  • Official details on the NCsoft Europe layoffs

    As the news and confirmations are trickling in from this morning's layoffs at NCsoft Europe, we're happy to report that we were contacted by NCsoft regarding complete information and an official word on the situation. Apparently, according to the press release after the jump, this is more of a restructuring within the company as the NCsoft Europe studio is transitioned into more of a marketing hub for the company.We also had a brief chat with a former NCsoft employee who confirmed the layoffs. This un-named source says that the Community Team, the Creative Services team, the Web Development team, Localization and a handful of others from various teams have been let go. But as confirmed in the official statement, these employees were offered other positions within the company, which is certainly a silver lining to this story. This person also stated that neither Aion nor Guild Wars 2 are in any trouble, as they're actually the largest focus of the company now.     It's time lose ourselves on a magical journey through- whoa, whoa! Is that a lady with big, feathery wings? Oh good, it's a new zone video tour of Aion. For a second there we thought Hawkgirl was finally assaulting us for making fun of her helmet.NCsoft has really outdone itself with the world design in Aion. The architecture alone makes us wonder if we'll ever stop exploring long enough to level up. Also, we didn't once see a zone covered in mushrooms and slathered with purple. HuzzahOur standards aren't actually that low, we promise. In fact, considering that Aion is running on a beefed up CryEngine (the one from Far Cry) there was actually quite a bit of presupposition on our part.Since Aion is proving to be pulling some visual heft, we're feeling decidedly excited for the North American launch, which is still unknown to anyone but NCsoft. Hopefully with videos like this showing off the game's serious visual oomph, we'll get a concrete launch date soon. Check out the full video after the break.

  • Aion receives a new community manager

    Who speaks fluent Klingon, played Counter-Strike competitively, won Star Trek trivia contests, and is the community manager of NCsoft's upcoming MMORPG, Aion? Why it would be Lani Blazier, aka "Liv!"Lani is no stranger to the gaming industry, if you hadn't noticed. Not only does she have all of the accomplishments above, but she's also a graduate of the Game Art and Design program at the Art Institute in Vancouver, BC. Before her new home at NCsoft, she was an assistant producer at Threewave Software, adding her name to six games during her stay there. While she was at Gamehouse, she switched from the production angle to the community angle after being exposed to game communities by a variety of online social games.We happily welcome Lani to the Aion development steam, and wish her and the rest of the team the best of luck with their new game.   • Aion lore chapter 6: The aftermath

    The Epic Cataclysm had just occurred and the people of Atreia find themselves recovering in the aftermath of the tower's collapse. How will they cope in this strange new version of their world? In true Aion style, the story of the cataclysm is told through the lens of both the Asmodians of upper Atreia and the Elyos of lower Atreia. This latest chapter of each viewpoint, Chapter VI, showcases the events directly following the tower's collapse and the 750 year period of evolution afterwards.If you have no idea what the previous paragraph means, then it's about time you read the entire story of Aion's lore. Told from two opposing perspectives, the story is currently at six chapters for each. They both tell abut the circumstances and events leading up to the Aion world that we will know when the game launches.   • Exploring the diverse armor of Aion

    As if we needed another reason to be excited for NCsoft's Aion, a recent dev article gives us some info on the diversity of armor in the fantasy MMO. This article explains how NCsoft realizes the importance of distinctive armor and the distinctions of setting your character apart from everyone else. As an example, they show the same character (a female Ranger) sporting several sets of armor in various poses.While this is simply a brief sample of the armor sets that will be available in the game when it launches later this year, it's inspiring to know just how freaking gorgeous it will be. Even compared to the way the game looked in its first public showings at PAX and the Leipzig Games Convention last year, it seems to be improving every time we see it.   • Aion interview explores aerial combat

    One of Aion's most touted features is its aerial combat, with the game's own website challenging us to abandon our limited two-dimensional thinking to make way for the future. We're not alone in wanting to know more about these flight mechanics, and when asked about them in a recent interview at Ten Ton Hammer, Associate Producer Chris Hager was able to dish out a few details. In Aion, flight time and flight speed are statistics that can be increased through gear or buffs, so players will need to choose how much they want to beef up their flight, as opposed to their other combat stats. The reason that flight statistics should be looked into comes down to the movement and positioning in the game:Aion's combat is fast paced and movement / positioning are very key. How you move effects your stats in positive and negative ways. In addition to this you will possess skills that will throw your enemy in all directions.This will certainly give an advantage to skilled players that can deftly maneuver their character, and the clumsier ones will end up harming their own stats. At the same time, aerial combat combined with knockbacks or throws sounds pretty disorienting, and it could get tiresome chasing bouncing targets (or worse, being that bouncing target) through the air.   • A look at the MMO coming attractions in 2009

    Now that we're comfortably settling in to our new digs at casa de 2009, it seems like the best time to reflect on what we have to look forward to in the coming year. Eurogamer has done the dirty work for us, as they've compiled a handy article detailing the coming attractions.All Points Bulletin tops their list as the star attraction, citing enthusiasm for the GTA-style action and depth of customization. SOE's The Agency and Free Realms, along with Cryptic's Champions Online and NetDevil's Jumpgate Evolution round out the remaining top spots on this list, for varying reasons. Some honorable mentions include Aion, Darkfall, EVE's Walking in Stations expansion, Earthrise, Global Agenda and many more expected to see the light of day this year or next. Will all of these games actually make it to a 2009 release, or will 2010 truly be the year of epic MMO launches?

  • Aion producer Brian Knox interviewed

    Aion: The Tower of Eternity has been kicking ass over in its local territory of Korea, and we're sure that there's a growing throng of folks out in the rest of the world that are dying to try it out. Massive Gamer Magazine recently had an interview with Brian Knox, a producer for the game, and what he said didn't give us much hope for betas outside of Korea -- at least not in any meaningful form. He says (correctly) that gamers are quick to judge a title on its beta, and that they would prefer to have "exclusive preview events" to show off the game at its best instead. Having said that, Korea did have a beta before launch, and hopefully we will too.A lot of the interview is spent discussing Aion's high level of customization. Knox claims that the character creation system is so robust that it would be possible to "literally create your own race within a race" by tweaking the sliders. As players level up, they will have the chance to equip stones that will change existing skills or grant new ones, further adding to character uniqueness. The other aspect of the game that Knox seemed very keen to talk about is the flying mechanic. Far from being tacked on, flight is intended to be integral to the gameplay in Aion, and its strategic use will be of the utmost importance in combat.
