TUAW TV Live: Samsung snarkery episode
As I write this in the early afternoon (ET) of September 4, 2013, Samsung's big event is occurring, complete with orchestra on stage, satellite link to Times Square and the new Galaxy Note 3. Doc and I will take a few minutes to dissect today's announcements from Apple's biggest competitor, and then talk about next week's big event -- the Apple announcement on September 10 at which the next-generation iPhone is expected to be rolled out. Sure, Samsung's upstaged the kids from Cupertino with Galaxy Gear, but perhaps we'll see something new and exciting and won't have to put up with an annoying host wearing the ugliest glasses on the planet. TUAW over-analyzes the Apple event invitation
Shortly after @jdalrymple announced to the world that the invitations for the September 10, 2013 Apple event had been sent out, TUAW Editor-in-Chief Victor Agreda, Jr. noted that @HereIsTrev had tweeted the following message: "Please don't over analyse every last aspect of the apple invite ... oh, too late." Here's our take on the invitation, BuzzFeed-style: There are 25 full or partial circles on the invitation (I counted). 25 is the square of five, which means that the "S" in iPhone 5S means "Five-squared." Of course, these colors represent the spectrum of case colors for your new iPhone. Only two of the circles are green, which Greenpeace should take notice of as it means that the new iPhone is ruining the environment. The four empty circles are representative of the loss of Steve Jobs, Scott Forstall, John Browett and (most recently) Bob Mansfield from the executive ranks of Apple. Blue is the most prevalent color on the invitation, which proves that Bondi Blue will be one of the colors for the new iPhone. The phrase "brighten everyone's day" is all about the new display technology for the iPhone, which will be incredibly readable in full sunlight. Many of the overlapping circles appear to be Venn diagrams. We are doing our best to determine what that means... The fact that Apple couldn't come up with a color for its logo in the center is a sign that the company is fresh out of innovative ideas. Tracing the path of the colored dots reveals a new gesture that'll conjure up the spirit of Steve Jobs. The dots are stylized fingerprints, meaning that the new iPhone will feature a fingerprint-authentication feature. The dot-filled invite also suggests iOS 7 will be sponsored by America's favorite candy, DOTS. See Android KitKat for context. The thin font used on the invite hints at a thinner bezel for the iPhone display. The multiple colors used on the invite suggest Apple will surprise us with multi-user support in a subsequent version of iOS 7.x. Those round circles are indicative of pixels on the screen of Apple's long-awaited HDTV, which will be known as "Munstervision" in honor of the one man who believed in the product, Gene Munster.

A WWDC keynote would be the longest gap between events ever
Jay Yarow's done the homework and determined that if Apple takes the stage as expected at WWDC, it'll be 230 days from the last big Apple event. That would make this the longest wait for a new Apple event ever, at least since the iPad's launch in 2010. The previous record was 132 days between the launch of the MacBook Air and the iPad 2, so this wait trumps that by at least three months. Yarow cites that wait over at Business Insider for the recent drop in Apple's stock price, and indeed, you can see on the line above that Apple's stock does seem to line up to the reveal events. But there are a lot of factors going into that stock price. The difference in event timing could just be attributed to CEO Tim Cook -- as Yarow notes, he's a very different person from Steve Jobs. Cook has suggested that the company could be a little more careful about new product releases, in order to line up more sales when the release actually arrives. Whatever the reason, it seems very likely that Apple will host an event at WWDC in June, if not before. It's unknown if that event will feature new hardware. Usually Apple uses the WWDC event to show off new version of iOS and OS X. But considering the wait, it seems likely Apple has something to show us.

Bloomberg: Apple event to focus on education
Tomorrow's Apple event might bring one thing in addition to a new, smaller iPad -- it might bring millions of new sales for the device to cash-strapped school systems around the country. Bloomberg reports that the iPad has made huge inroads in the education market where the Mac couldn't. In many cases, school systems that would have preferred Macs simply couldn't afford the "Apple Tax" and bought systems from Lenovo, Dell and other manufacturers instead. When the iPad arrived, those schools suddenly had a way to buy Apple gear at a much lower price point. It's expected that Apple will make education a focal point of tomorrow's event as a result. Bloomberg notes that the educational IT market accounted for US$19.7 billion in sales in 2010-2011, and with school systems dropping desktops and laptops for mobile devices, Apple has a sterling opportunity to increase sales in the market. Many educators believe that a device priced in the $200-$300 range would drastically increase purchases of the iPad in schools. Since the launch of the third-generation iPad earlier this year, many school systems have embraced WiFi iPad 2s, which are available on educational discount for as little as $370 loaded with educational apps.

Apple announces 'Special Event' for October 23rd -- we'll be there live!
Apple has just invited members of the press to attend a product launch on October 23rd, where we assume the long-rumored iPad mini will be unveiled. The event will go down merely weeks after Apple took the wraps off of the iPhone 5 (and strangely enough, the Foo Fighters played their last show for the foreseeable future). It's quite unlike Apple to throw two product parties in the fall, but if an entirely new iPad is being revealed, it may be a scenario that becomes more familiar in years to come. At this point, we're left with far more questions than answers: will the iPad mini really ship with a Lightning port, while the Retina iPad -- which was only introduced in March -- continues to ship with the "old" Dock Connector? Will Apple really continue to refresh its two iPad products at different intervals? Will the (presumed) AT&T iPad mini actually include mobile hotspot functionality? And while we're at it, is Apple really going to throw a "one more thing" into the mix by bumping its 13-inch MacBook Pro into Retina territory? After all, tossing "little" into the invite could allude to a smaller iPad and an update to an already-small laptop. We'll be there to bring you the blow-by-blow as it happens, so feel free to go ahead and take next Tuesday off. We'll sign the approval form.
iPad mini's rumored launch may be aimed at Microsoft Surface
This theory is speculative, but let's give CNN's Don Sears some consideration anyway. He suggests that Apple's suspected iPad mini event has been moved from the rumored October 10 to 17 date range to the current expectation of the October 23. Why, he asks? Because the Microsoft Surface is due to arrive right around then, he answers. Microsoft announced its Surface tablet unit quite a while ago, and rumors suggest that the device will greet the public this month. Sears suggests that Apple re-scheduled its own event to more closely coincide with Microsoft's launch plans. While much of this is based on suspicions and rumor (Apple has not officially announced an event), Sears' logic rings true. After all, Apple has had no problem with stealing thunder. It has announced its own products specifically around big industry conferences like CES and GDC many times before, and it would be very Apple-like to take Microsoft's release on directly, stealing much of the anticipated Surface buzz. We'll have to see how this all plays out when these announcements finally do happen later on this month.

iOS 6 GM seed now available for developers
Developers, start your engines: the GM (Golden Master) seed of iOS 6 is now available and ready for download on Apple's Developer page. Essentially, the GM seed is the final version of the OS sent out to developers -- as an opportunity to fully test their apps -- before the rest of the general public, which will take place on September 19th. The Xcode 4.5 GM seed is now available as well. Head to the link below, log into your developer account, and venture over to the iOS Dev Center to find the download links. Update: it looks like it's fully working now. Hop to it!
Apple search results turn up iPhone 5 name and LTE connectivity, indications of new iPod touch, iPod nano and iTunes 11
Apple offered a hint of the name in its invitation to today's event, but it looks like a slip-up on its own website may have now let the cat of the bag. Searching for "iphone-5" brings up a number of results for (as yet nonexistent) pages related to a device that seems to clearly be called the "iPhone 5." What's more, as 9 to 5 Mac notes, there are also references to a "new iPod touch with Retina Display" and a new iPod nano, as well as a similar indication that iTunes 11 is set to be released today. Update: 9 to 5 Mac has also turned up another search result that would seem to confirm the presence of LTE in the new iPhone.

Apple's components spending increasing dramatically
Statements made by Apple CEO Tim Cook and CFO Peter Oppenheimer during the recent 3Q 2012 earnings call are beginning to make sense in light of news from AllThingsD's John Paczkowski that shows that Apple's prepayments for inventory components are ramping up in a big way. The Apple executives had noted that the 4Q 2012 earnings guidance would be down due to a "product transition," basically a way of saying that they'd be spending more on building inventory for a new product coming down the pike. Cook and Oppenheimer also repeatedly referred to "confidence in the new product pipeline," meaning that something big is coming from the company. (Chris referenced this in passing in yesterday's Rumor Roundup.) Paczkowski pointed out a chart in Apple's latest 10-Q filing (at the top of this post), which shows prepayment for inventory components in the June quarter rising US$1.15 billion over the previous quarter. That's a huge buildup, and Wells Fargo Securities analyst Maynard Um is cited as saying that "Historically, such increases have been followed by a solid ramp-up in revenue in the following 2-3 quarters. In our view, an increase in inventory component prepayment may suggest that Apple is securing supply for potential new product launches." As reported by several sites yesterday, the anticipation is building for a rumored Apple event in mid-September. There's a good chance that one of those products is the next-generation iPhone, but perhaps we'll also see other products getting a refresh. What updated or new Apple products do you want to see?
