Update: Ubisoft has told Polygon that the story derived from Hutchinson's comments is not correct, and that the PC version of Assassin's Creed 3 is still on track for October 30. Ubisoft PR has not responded to our requests for further comment. Original story:The PC version of Assassin's Creed 3 is delayed beyond the October 30 release date scheduled for consoles, Ubisoft creative lead Alex Hutchinson confirmed today at a San Diego Comic-Con panel. The PC iteration is set to launch before Christmas, "near the console launch," Hutchinson said. This confirms an earlier rumor concerning the obligatory Ubi-PC delay for Assassin's Creed 3.

  • Michael Fassbender starring in and co-producing Assassin's Creed film

When he's not playing a cold, conniving artificial man, Michael Fassbender is sharpening his hidden blade (and his hidden check book). Not because he's way into hidden knives (he isn't, as far as we know), but because he'll be playing the starring role in an upcoming Assassin's Creed film adaptation, says Variety.Fassbender's company DMC Film is co-producing the film as well, teaming up with Ubisoft Motion Pictures. It's unclear which part of the game's canon will form the basis of the film, if any. Variety says the "plot revolves around a man who learns his ancestors were trained assassins after he is kidnapped by a secret org with ties to the Knights Templar, and sent back in time to retrieve historical artifacts," which sounds like a game revolving around Desmond to us. It also sounds like the basic root of the entire game franchise, so ... do with that what you will. The new deal with Fassbender's DMC Film helps to put Ubi's previous Sony talks to bed. Talks last November apparently fizzled, though Ubi is still open to "re-discuss" things "once the production package is finalized." Ubisoft Motion Pictures will hire the project's director and writer before getting involved with any third parties – a response to the lackluster reception Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time got at the box office, which Ubi apparently attributes (at least in part) to a lack of creative control over its own property.[Pictured: Filming of Assassin's Creed: Lineage]

We imagine the folks manning the empire back in England were having a bit of a bad day on July 5, 1776. Their lucrative colonies in the New World had just declared independence, and some half-British/half-Native American was murdering all their police. Er ... wait a minute ...

Just in time for Independence Day, Ubisoft has offered up a way to show a little national pride, Assassin's Creed 3 style. The company has announced the Assassin's Creed 3 Limited Edition, which will retail for $119.99 and come with extra goods, including a huge 24" by 48" Assassin's Creed-inspired colonial American flag. Ubisoft sent a flag fitting this description to the press last week, and we've placed a picture of it after the break. (see update)There's also a 9.44" statue of new assassin Connor, and a metal belt buckle, presumably used for holding up your pants while carrying out cold-blooded murders. The Limited Edition is an exclusive to retailers in North America and Latin America, so Europeans are out of luck on this one. There's also a Digital Deluxe Edition available straight from Ubisoft for the PC. For $64.99 you'll get a notebook featuring "George Washington's true story" (we hope wooden teeth are involved), three extra single-player missions, two extra in-game outfits, and an Assassin's Creed soundtrack collection. %Gallery-159585%Update: Ubisoft has confirmed that the flag in our picture below is not the flag available in the Limited Edition.

  • Rumor: Assassin's Creed 3 PC delayed to November

Assassin's Creed 3 for PC will allegedly launch in November, according to a Eurogamer publishing informant. Eurogamer reports it was tipped about the delay by a source, who provided a promotional image for the Czech Republic featuring the November date. Ubisoft told Eurogamer in follow-up, "The Windows PC release date is still to be announced."Awkward. Okay, we asked Ubisoft to clarify the PC release date and the publisher told us: "Ubisoft does not comment on rumors or speculation." So ... it's a rumor that the PC version was expected to launch October 30 with the console version? When it comes to Ubisoft, not having a staggered release between console and PC would be a huge surprise at this point.

We're also not sure how much it'll cost, but we do know what it looks like. It ... uh ... looks like a PlayStation 3. More info as we get it!

Red Dead Redemption stands to be put to shame by the sheer amount of variety of animal murder made available in this October's Assassin's Creed 3. The latest trailer, straight from Ubi's E3 2012 press conference, is chock full of those soon-to-be murdered animals, not to mention lots of early Americana. And that's to say nothing of the newest gameplay demo, which we've dropped just below the break. What we're trying to say is this post has a bunch of new Assassin's Creed 3 footage and you should probably watch it. It's super hot.

Ubisoft has filed a complaint to prevent novelist John Beiswenger from renewing his claims that the Assassin's Creed universe stole ideas from his novel, Link. Beiswenger first sued Ubisoft in April, but dropped the lawsuit earlier this week because he couldn't handle the expense of litigation.Beiswenger dismissed the Ubisoft case "without prejudice," meaning he can pick up the charges and pursue litigation at any time, and Ubisoft is looking to have the case found "frivolous and without merit," Gamasutra reports.Ubisoft's complaint argues that Beiswenger's claims of copyright infringement are based on "patently non-copyrightable elements." His claims include "assassins" and "spiritual and biblical tones."

The Assassin's Creed 3 Ubiworkshop Edition will include the Assassin's Creed Encyclopedia Second Edition and Assassin's Creed Subject 4, a compilation of the graphic novels The Fall and The Chain. It will also include the game, but when you have an encyclopedia and some comic books, what self-respecting nerd needs video games? The Ubiworkshop Edition is for Xbox 360 and PS3 and costs $100 in a special pre-order price, valid through July 4, and $110 following that completely random day, exclusively on Ubiworkshop. Ubisoft promises this edition includes more than 500 pages of narrative content: The encyclopedia alone runs $50 and each comic is $20 separately on Ubiworkshop, so on top of a $60 game, this edition is a steal.

The Zavvi listing remains active. We'll check with Ubisoft; however, for an actual status update about these games, we're sure we'll need only to wait for E3.

  • Lawsuit alleging copyright infringement in Assassin's Creed dropped, Gametrailers settles

Novelist John Beiswenger has dropped the lawsuit against Ubisoft, in which he alleged the Assassin's Creed universe stole ideas from one of his books, Link. Gametrailers, whom Beiswenger sued in the same case, settled with the author on May 18 under undisclosed terms.Beiswenger voluntarily dismissed all action against Ubisoft before any formal adjudication on the validity of his claims could begin - the Internet made up its mind about his claims a while ago. Beiswenger has dropped the case, citing the expense of federal litigation:"I filed the Complaint and Motion for Preliminary Injunction in federal court because I believe authors should vigorously defend their rights in their creative works; otherwise, the laws protecting them simply have no purpose," Beiswenger's official statement reads. "Regrettably, the resources required to defend those rights are unavailable to many individual creators. As a result, rampant infringement is occurring with impunity."Beiswenger was seeking $5.25 million in damages and the potential cessation of all Assassin's Creed endeavors, including the third game currently due out in October. Beiswenger filed the dismissal "without prejudice," meaning he can pick up the claims and the case again in the future. If he ever does, we don't think Ubisoft will sweat it too much; the Internet has already done most of the debunking already, unless Beiswenger can somehow prove that he owns the rights to "spiritual and biblical tones" or "assassinations."

You'll be doing a lot of things with Assassin's Creed 3 protagonist Ratohnhaké:ton – like chasing down Redcoats and murdering them, running away from murderous Redcoats, sneaking up to silently murder Redcoats, and engaging in open battle with Redcoats. Beyond all that, however, you'll also be fighting terrifying, wild bears, as the trailer above implies. Thankfully for you, we can confirm it: yes, you'll be fighting the bear seen in the above trailer. The gameplay trailer for Assassin's Creed 3 – unlocked by the community this morning – shows the first Connor-on-Bear action we've seen. It also gives a first glimpse at the game's new "chain blade," but the most important part is still dude fights a bear.

  • Novelist suing over Assassin's Creed has his lawyer respond to gamer rage

Author John Beiswenger poked the sleeping dragon that is the Internet when he filed a lawsuit against Ubisoft, claiming the Assassin's Creed franchise infringes on copyrights in his novel, Link. Namely, Beiswenger says Assassin's Creed stole themes such as "assassinations," "spiritual and biblical tones" and a battle between good and evil from Link, which was published five years prior to the first Assassin's Creed title.Beiswenger is seeking up to $5.25 million in damages. The lawsuit could also delay the release of Assassin's Creed 3, a fact that wiped the grins from many a gamer's face and set a few (hundred) to review-bombing Beiswenger's Amazon pages.Beiswenger's lawyer, Kelley Keller, has now responded to Eurogamer on the negative reaction and her client's claims: "We understand that many gamers are upset about the litigation and potential for delay in the release of the next Assassin's Creed video game, and as a result of that anger have been posting negative comments on Amazon - and other forums - about our client and his novel Link. However, copyright laws exist to protect authors and creators from others who copy or create works that are, under the law, substantially similar; failure to enforce copyright laws renders them meaningless. "The Amazon 'bombing,' storm of negative comments and threats to our client have no bearing on the appropriateness, merits or outcome of this suit. They have no material effect on the legal claims."Keller says she believes the similarities in Link and Assassin's Creed are more than coincidence and that despite the five-year delay in filing charges, the lawsuit was brought within an applicable time period. We don't know about you guys, but the only applicable time periods we see here are the American Revolution, and October 2012.

New Assassin's Creed protagonist Ratohnhaké:ton (er ... Connor) isn't the smooth-talking debutant that kicked off Assassin's Creed 2. Instead, he's a brutal hunter, stalking his targets from treetops before leaping down on them for the final blow (you may already know this stuff). Moreover, he's a crack shot with a bow, as seen in the latest teaser for Assassin's Creed 3. Ubisoft is goading fans to do its viral advertising with promises of a lengthier trailer after reaching a certain level of buzz on this Facebook page, which we totally do not support. On the other hand, we're totally down to see what happens to the flailing Redcoat. All in all, we're feeling an awful lot like Natalie Imbruglia this morning.

  • Nielsen: Assassin's Creed 3, Halo 4 most anticipated console titles this year

You guys are so predictable, except when you're being unpredictable. This year gamers are most excited to play Halo 4 (which still doesn't have a release date) on Xbox 360, Assassin's Creed 3 on PS3 and Madden NFL 13 on Wii, Nielsen reports from a recent study. What baffles us is how low BioShock: Infinite rates (9th on 360 and 8th on PS3) and how eager PS3 owners are to play Prototype 2 -- it ranks 7th for PS3 gamers and doesn't even hit the top 10 on Xbox 360. We won't even discuss what business Battleship thinks it has being in 3rd place for Wii gamers.Nielsen aggregated the scores based on eight "key customer metrics," such as "awareness" and "purchase interest." We are now certainly "aware" that we can't guess the general consumer's mindset, when all we hear about is how they have no "interest" to "purchase" another game ever again, but mainstream, full-price titles crowd the most-anticipated list. Check out the complete list here.
