  • Assassin's Creed 3 will have new challenges and content every month

While Ubisoft has been quick to introduce Connor and focus on the single-player campaign in Assassin's Creed 3, not much has been said on the multiplayer side, a staple of the series since being introduced in Assassin's Creed: Brotherhood. Multiplayer developer Ubisoft Annecy says there will be a greater focus on multiplayer in Assassin's Creed 3 – both in terms of support from Ubisoft and its impact on the overall Assassin's Creed lore.Abstergo has turned the Animus into a commercial product, and you'll play as one consumer who's looking forward to "reliving the past in HD." Every month, Ubisoft will give players new content to unlock through new challenges. "As you progress in the game and level up your character, you access these files and videos. Every month you'll have new challenges to unlock new content that will continue the storyline throughout the year," Ubisoft Annecy game director Damien Kieken told CVG.The multiplayer environments themselves will now have a greater impact on gameplay – weather effects such as sudden rain storms or blizzards can impact visibility and players can employ special environmental kills using objects like bottles and axes. Back at Gamescom, Ubisoft demoed Wolfpack and Domination, two modes we were able to sample – a new wave-based co-op mode where players hunt down targets in the environment and take them down, and the more traditional four-on-four team-based mode, respectively.

When Assassin's Creed 3 launches later this year, Connor's gonna have more than Red Coats and wolves to contend with – he's also the captain of a colonial warship, naturally. If you thought the myriad systems of past AC games were insane, take a look at the video above and see how truly insane they can be.

Not that we needed any reassurance from real historians, but Assassin's Creed 3 protagonist Connor is very good at killing Red Coats. Sure, it's more than a little weird when Sons of the American Revolution rep Gary Bohannon says, "If George Washington had had Connor on his team, he wouldn't have needed many other people," but Ubisoft has to establish the seriousness of its historical experts, right? All kidding aside, the first episode of AC3's video series features tons of great in-game footage paired with marketing-heavy missives from the Ubisoft Montreal creative leads. Try your best to ignore the lofty, generic statements while enjoying the footage. You can totally do it.

  • Ubisoft CEO claims 93-95% piracy rate on their PC products

Ubisoft CEO Yves Guillemot has stated the percentage of paying players for its PC retail products and its free-to-play content is approximately the same. Speaking to GamesIndustry at Gamescom, Guillemot noted that only about five to seven percent of freemium players buy into content, which he said is the same as its retail PC product because they have a "93-95 percent piracy rate."Guillemot also said that free-to-play games are normally cheaper to produce and distribute, since they use existing assets and avoid boxed distribution costs, but the product still needs to fit the audience."We also take content which we've developed in the past, graphics etc, and we can make cheaper games and improve them over time," he said. "What's very important is that we change the content and make it a better fit to the customer as time goes on."Ubisoft has become notorious for staggered releases between its console and PC launches, along with blatantly lying about the topic of PC delays – and let's not even discuss the draconian DRM headaches.

Assassin's Creed 3 for PC now has an official UK launch date of November 23, fulfilling the standard Ubisoft PC delay prophecy. "Up until now the release date of Assassin's Creed 3 PC has been unannounced," Ubisoft's announcement to CVG reads. "Today we can officially announce the PC release date as the 23rd November in the UK."Ubisoft previously denied there'd be a delay. We're getting in touch with Ubisoft in the States to find out if it would like to confirm the staggered release between console and PC for the North American side of the pond.Update: Ubisoft has confirmed to Joystiq a November 20 launch date in the United States for Assassin's Creed 3 on PC.

  • Wii U titles listed on Amazon let us see Nintendo's all-new packaging design

Although it shouldn't come as a surprise that Nintendo would be redesigning its software packaging to accommodate the new "U," it's still nice to get an early peek at what we can expect from the Japanese gaming giant come "this holiday" season. As you can tell by the Avengers: Battle for Earth title above, the design only sees slight changes near the top, where it's clearly left the white and gray accents for a more colorful blue and yellow coating -- not to mention the expected addition of the Wii U branding around the center. There are other games out in the Amazon wild besides the Marvel one here, including Just Dance 4 and Assassin's Creed 3. You can check those out at any of the source links below.

Listings for three Ubisoft Wii U games on Amazon.ca show a new design at the top of the boxes, which is possibly the design for all Wii U boxarts. Nintendo seems to be going to extremes to ensure Wii U boxes aren't confused for Wii games (though they will be anyway), trading the white and grey bar for a blue and yellow U shape. You can see the box on the listings for Assassin's Creed 3, Just Dance 4, and Avengers: Battle for Earth. So far, it's only visible at Amazon.ca. We're following up with Nintendo to verify that this is the real design, and to make sure Just Dance 4's neon zebra stripes aren't part of the standard.

A tiny bit of light has been shed on the PS3-exclusive DLC for Assassin's Creed 3, according to box art posted on Amazon UK. According to said art, the PlayStation 3 version of Assassin's Creed 3 will include an additional hour of gameplay, which sounds like just about enough to encompass a meaty mission or two. Ubisoft has confirmed to Joystiq that this is indeed the DLC Sony announced during E3, and not additional content beyond what has already been revealed.Sony and Assassin's Creed have something of a history when it comes to exclusive content, with the PS3 getting exclusive launch DLC for Assassin's Creed: Brotherhood and later hosting an exclusive beta for Assassin's Creed: Revelations.

A new trailer for Assassin's Creed 3 multiplayer was posted on GameTrailers yesterday. Apparently it wasn't quite ready for prime time, as it was quickly taken down – but not quickly enough to keep it off YouTube. The trailer is framed as a commercial for Animus technology, created by the evil Abstergo Corporation that's dogged Desmond across several games now, and showcases several different multiplayer modes and features.Check out the video for a look at character customization as well as the Domination and Wolfpack modes, which we tried out earlier this month at Comic-Con.

There are plenty of reasons to visit Germany, but for gamers looking to sample some stuff still in development, Ubisoft is making a strong claim for Primary Reason. The publisher is throwing everything at Gamescom this year, an event that saw 275,000 attendees in 2011.Assassin's Creed 3 and its PS Vita spinoff, Assassin's Creed 3: Liberation, will both be on hand at Ubisoft's booth. They'll be joined by Far Cry 3, Tom Clancy's Ghost Recon: Online and Shootmania. Ubisoft is also going to truck out all of its Wii U games: Zombi U, Rayman Legends, Rabbids Land, Sports Connection and Your Shape Fitness Evolved 2013. And if you decide to skip that last game, don't sweat it – you'll get all the exercise you need running around the Koelnmesse.

  • Rumor: Assassin's Creed 3 getting a 'Season Pass'

Those crafty Templars at Ubisoft are at it again, seemingly planning to subjugate the masses with a "season pass" for Assassin's Creed 3. A letter purportedly sent to GameStop employees both thanks them for their "hard work" in snapping up pre-orders of AC3 from customers, and, more importantly, warns them of an upcoming "season pass concept" for this October's game."We are currently in the process of creating a complementary development team that will begin working on post-launch episodic content to continue the Game of the Year experience that Assassin's Creed 3 will undoubtedly deliver," reads the letter. It's not exactly uncommon for Ubisoft to support its games post-launch, and the AC franchise is no exception – each of the last three AC games, starting with AC2, were bolstered by post-launch content.Precedents set by previous "season pass" offerings dictates that a variety of DLC (multiplayer, single-player, or both) would be packaged and sold ahead of its launch, giving the buyer an aggregate discount across all of it. Ubisoft enacted such a scheme with the last AC title, Revelations, albeit only via PC. Still, neither Ubisoft nor Gamestop can confirm this letter or a "Season Pass" for AC3. And no, DLC for Assassin's Creed 3 has not yet been announced, outside of the ambiguous "special DLC" heading exclusively to PlayStation 3 players.

Ubisoft has announced a new novel set in the Assassin's Creed universe, coming about a month after Assassin's Creed 3 hits stores on October 30. Assassin's Creed: Forsaken will be written by Oliver Bowden, and will focus on "the story behind who Connor really is and how he has become a deadly killer."Sales of the Assassin's Creed novels, at around 380,000 copies, haven't come very close to the games' 38 million sales, but there's clearly an audience for the historical fiction. Assassin's Creed: Forsaken will be out for $9.99 on December 4.

  • Assassin's Creed 3 multiplayer: Domination and Wolfpack modes

A row of eight monitors, back-to-back in two groups of four, lined a long table at Ubisoft's San Diego Comic-Con showcase, all booted up with the first publicly playable versions of Assassin's Creed 3 multiplayer. We played two new modes, Domination and Wolfpack, though lead game designer for Assassin's Creed 3 multiplayer Tim Browne told us there will be "a lot" of familiar modes in the final game.Domination uses the full eight-player limit on multiplayer, with two teams of four playing to capture three separate zones in a snowy frontier setting. Players attempt to blend in with the roaming NPCs to stand in zones long enough to capture them, and then defend those areas by spotting and stunning or killing enemies as they enter and try to do the same. Domination is a quiet, intense derivative of Manhunt mode, with plenty to dissect on-screen in every move, all while making it appear as if your character isn't thinking at all.Wolfpack offers a more intimate multiplayer experience, with up to four players working together to find and take down enemies in a limited amount of time, with extra time added for special kills and cooperation. In a two-player match, the highest we reached was Sequence 7 out of 25 total consecutive, fluid levels -- and that was without talking much over the mics. Browne recommended players converse throughout the match to perfectly sync their kills, which leads to special cutscenes.
