  • No 'always-on' DRM for Assassin's Creed: Revelations

Ubisoft's always on-again, off-again relationship with its restrictive DRM policies is "off-again" for Assassin's Creed: Revelations. Rock Paper Shotgun reports word from the publisher that it will activate an initial check the first time the game boots up -- and then players are good to go with offline play. The publisher gave the Assassin's Creed series a break from its always-on DRM after the first sequel, with last year's Brotherhood spared the inconvenience. Meanwhile, other Ubisoft products, like Driver: San Francisco and From Dust, have been burdened with the internet-required protection at launch. Well, at least one thing remains consistent in the social contract between Ubisoft and PC players: there's no sign of the publisher halting its predictable staggering of console and PC launches.

Assassin's Creed is as much about tweaking history as it is about stabbing. The latest trailer for Revelations is narrated by Suleiman the Magnificent (The Lawgiver), who will need the help of the assassins and Ezio to resolve a power struggle.

We slept through the one marketing class we were forced to take back in college, so the advertising synergy Ubisoft is looking for by having famous athletes shill its latest Assassin's Creed game is lost on us. But then again, we imagine we're not the coveted assassin slash professional athlete demographic we assume Ubisoft is looking to reach with this.

Well, okay, not all of the secrets -- we're still not sure how they make such great coffee -- but you can learn a bit more about the evil corporation hunting down Desmond while he's in the past hunting down Templars in Assassin's Creed: Revelations. Hey, even big bad companies need PR too. In addition to that trailer, Ubisoft also sent over two others: one the usual dubsteppy-type highlight of single-player content and the other a look at the game's expanded multiplayer. You can check those out past the jump.

  • Report: Assassin's Creed movie deal gives Ubi too much power, puts movie in danger

Sony Pictures is working on a deal with Ubisoft to secure the film rights to Assassin's Creedd; however, Vulture reports that the deal Ubisoft got is so heavily Ubisoft-leaning that it may make the film impossible to actually finish. The deal grants Ubisoft approval over most aspects of the film, including budget, cast, script, and even release date. "As a director, even Steven Spielberg cannot get this kind of deal," Vulture was told by an "insider" who didn't really need to stay anonymous for that. With Ubisoft in charge, and retaining the right to stop production at any time, there seems to be a concern among the interviewed studio heads that Ubisoft would do just that if it didn't like what it was seeing -- or that it would continue to make demands too demanding for any movie studio to deal with.

Like a first-day assassin recruit, the Assassin's Creed: Revelations Achievements list isn't the best at hiding. With over a month to go until launch, it looks like players already have a good idea of what to expect from a majority of Revelations' Achievements -- that is, if they've played Brotherhood. The Achievements list is a healthy mix of story-based stuff and multiplayer, though a few are probably a bit spoilery, so click through at your own risk. You've been warned!

Want to see Ezio Auditore hookblade people in 3D? That's sick. You're sick. But you can totally do that, as Ubisoft has added 3D support to Assassin's Creed: Revelations. You can enjoy the illusion of depth whether you have a 3D television or not: the PS3 and Xbox 360 versions use TriOviz's tech for normal TVs, and are also compatible with all 3DTVs. The PC version uses Nvidia's 3D Vision technology. Speaking of hookblades and sickness, have fun zipping over cities with 3D turned on. And by "have fun" we mean "keep a bucket handy."

I'm playing Assassin's Creed: Revelations, and I can't remember how to lock on during combat. How embarrassing. And then I'm told there's even more equipment being added to change the way the game plays, and I wonder how Ubisoft Montreal could possibly make Assassin's Creed, a game that's been accused of creaking under the weight of its mechanics, better through adding more to that. But if my initial time with Assassin's Creed: Revelations is proper precedent, the Hookblade is a sign of how Ubisoft is tying Assassin's Creed's various mechanics more closely together.%Gallery-136270%

Though Ubisoft's accounting and marketing departments probably have a greater say in the practice of annualizing Assassin's Creed (y'all keep buying it every year!), the people in charge of the franchise's elaborate fiction have their own impetus in the form of a ticking clock. With Assassin's Creed: Revelations concluding Ezio's extended quest (and the "Embers" animated short providing a dignified epilogue), the plot's modern component -- starring feeble hoodie-hermit Desmond -- is set to run its course by the end of 2012, just in time for next year's AC outing. Creative lead Alexandre Amancio explains it to Eurogamer: "In Assassin's Creed we set up a timeline with this whole end of the world plot of December 2012. That's fast approaching, and the story we have to tell, we obviously need to do it before we arrive at that point." Desmond's tale is far from being the final one in Assassin's Creed, but Amancio believes that having the current protagonist's dilemma linger after calendar 2013 would be "stupid," given the authors' efforts to run parallel to reality. "It would be stupid of us to be centring [sic] a game on a semi-reality and then have that conclusion happen after that date in real life," he says. That's assuming we all survive beyond 2012 anyway.

  • Nielsen taps most anticipated games, Modern Warfare 3 on top

The Nielsen firm has compiled a list of the top twenty most anticipated games this holiday season. The survey ranks games based on the percentage of players that ranked them in their top five choices for the holiday. Unsurprisingly, Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 was at the top of the list, with fully 27 percent of those surveyed placing it in their top five. Rounding out the top five, Gears of War 3 and Madden NFL 12 both pulled 19 percent, Assassin's Creed Revelations made 17 percent and Batman: Arkham City reached 15 percent. The holiday's major Wii exclusive, The Legend of Zelda: Skyward Sword made the sixth slot with 14 percent. Battlefield 3, Modern Warfare 3's major competition, reached number seven at 12 percent. Also worth noting: Dead Island, at 7 percent, marks the only game on the entire list that isn't part of an established franchise. The survey also includes a fascinating peek into the psyche of various players, making note of the online conversations surrounding each title. For example, Modern Warfare 3 fans are looking forward to launch parties, and Skyward Sword devotees are hoping to rekindle that old Ocarina of Time feeling. Madden armchair quarterbacks, meanwhile, are planning to call in sick in order to squeeze in a few more touchdowns.

You may be wondering why the Hookblade, one of the new armaments in Assassin's Creed: Revelations, is called that. The trailer above clears things up: It doesn't just have a hook, you see. There's also a blade up on there. See? Look, right below the hook. That there's a blade.

It may be an obvious ploy to get the game back on our front page, but this "extended" cut of E3's popular Assassin's Creed trailer does complete the condensed story. We thought you'd like to see it -- though Woodkid's "Iron" accompaniment is sorely missed.

Look, we were sure your a capella version of "Microphone Assassin" would be both topical and well-delivered, but in the end the gig for voice of Assassin's Creed: Revelations' theme song didn't go to you. It went to Madeline, who just may have the coolest job at Ubisoft now -- aside from the guy who tests the wrist blades, of course. To ask Ubisoft, Madeline's voice held a quality that "inspired and moved us all." You can listen to her winning performance by heading on over to the UJAM site.

By our count, the 126-second-long multiplayer trailer for Assassin's Creed: Revelations posted above features 30 individual murders, giving it a murder-to-time ratio of one murder every 4.2 seconds. If that sounds upsetting, you probably shouldn't click that button with the sideways triangle on it.
