As if anyone needed yet another reason to pick up Assassin's Creed: Revelations at launch, Ubisoft has just announced that the initial shipment of the PS3 version of their time-jumping assassination simulator will also include the original Assassin's Creed. Seeing as the Assassin's Creed mythos are fairly intricate, convoluted and span several centuries, playing through the original will provide a much needed refresher course for those of us who have clocked more than a few hours in the Animus. At this point, we're not even sure who we are anymore. [Update: We reached out to Ubisoft to ask if the 2007 pre-Trophy Assassin's Creed would be updated to support the digital baubles, and a Ubi rep replied, "There will be no trophy support for the original Assassin's Creed." Sorry, Trophy collectors.]

  • You could sing the Assassin's Creed: Revelations theme (seriously)

Upon hearing about Ubisoft's singing contest for this November's Assassin's Creed: Revelations launch, we've been furiously putting ink to paper in an effort to cage all of our wild lyrical genius. Apparently, that is all for naught, as the contest doesn't actually seek lyrics to go with our symphonic collective voice, but rather one especially melodious vocalist for non-lyrical singing. Rats! AC: R composer Lorne Balfe and general composer dude Hans Zimmer explain the contest in the video. They are looking for folks to put vocals to the game's theme song (available here), and to then get on Facebook for some Marketing 2.0. After reaching the top 20 "Liked" versions of the theme on Facebook, you'll enter the second round, where a handful of musicians (including Zimmer and Balfe, among others) will pick the creme de la creme. Finally, if you're chosen, you get to record your version of the theme, get credits in the game and the soundtrack, and you'll be "awarded" a prize of $1,000. The only question we have now is this: How much would it cost to pay a professional vocalist to record the theme? Regardless, potential entrants have until 8:00PM PST on September 19 to enter, giving you just under two weeks to get crackin'. So, uh, get crackin'!

Not a PlayStation Plus subscriber, but you firmly subscribe to a lifestyle of professional assassination? You'd think the latter would give you the money required for the former, but regardless -- your first opportunity to get down on the Assassin's Creed: Revelations multiplayer beta approaches. As of tomorrow, the beta will be downloadable for every PSN user, not just Plussers. If you're planning on getting in, you'll want to do so before the beta closes on September 11. We'll see you on the battlefield! But you won't see us. Until after we've stabbed you, of course. Unless we stab you from behind, and you die really quickly! There's a lot of ways this could go down, see.

You've got a hoodie drawn over your eyes, a hidden blade tucked under each sleeve, and you're a parkour master. Every evening you renew your vow to the order, quietly murmuring "Vittoria agli assassini" before retiring to bed. But as we all know, you're not a real Assassin's Creed fan without a miniature statuette of Leonardo da Vinci's flying machine and a plastic statue of elderly Ezio. As it turns out, GameStop is offering just that in what it's calling the Assassin's Creed: Revelations "Ultimate Edition," which includes the contents of the pre-order-tied "Signature Edition" plus the aforementioned plastic items. That means it costs $40 more on consoles and PC ($100 and $90, respectively) for two plastic figures and ... a whole bunch of content that everyone else is getting for free with a pre-order.

Ubisoft isn't messing around at PAX Prime this year, evidenced by the fact that the company is bringing just about every game it's currently working on to the show -- and even some that are already out. Here's the full list: Assassin's Creed: Revelations From Dust Just Dance 3 Might and Magic Heroes VI Might and Magic Heroes Kingdoms Rayman Origins Rocksmith Shoot Many Robots Tom Clancy's Ghost Recon Online Tom Clancy's Ghost Recon Future Soldier TrackMania Canyon In addition to having games to play, Ubisoft is also looking for attendees to pre-order upcoming games by hooking them up with exclusive goodies. A pre-order of Future Soldier will net PAX attendees an exclusive gun skin, a Revelations pre-order gives you an Altair avatar, Just Dance 3 has a neon watch, Rayman Origins has a custom T-shirt, and pre-ordering Rocksmith gets you an exclusive guitar strap. Attendees can also check out the Assassin's Creed panel in the Main Theatre on Friday at 6pm PT. There, Ubisoft will show off single-player footage of the game, hopefully adding to what we've seen come out of Gamescom.

Sure, said assassins, rabbids, and future soldiers will arrive in video game form, but there's at least an air of danger in Ubisoft's Gamescom lineup. The French publisher revealed its German cavalry this week, saying that all titles will be available either in hands-on versions or hands-off presentations. From Dust (released on consoles thus far), Far Cry 3, Might & Magic Heroes VI, and Rayman Origins will be on site. Ubi will also hold a roundtable discussion titled, "Is Online Gaming Changing How We Create?" and featuring "creative leaders from Ubisoft's online teams. It'll be open to press, Ubisoft partners and the show's trade visitors. It's not necessarily bad news for you, Joe Public. While we're busy watching the roundtable, you could be jamming on some Anno 2070!

CVG reports that not only will the UK receive the previously revealed "Animus Edition" of Assassin's Creed: Revelations, but a second collectible bundle as well. The "Collector Edition" differs from the Animus Edition in that it contains an artbook and soundtrack instead of an encyclopedia, and leaves out the in-game Armor of Brutus and capacity upgrades. Oh, and it's £49.99 for Xbox 360 or PS3, instead of the Animus Edition's £68.99, as listed by retailer GAME. The Animus Edition is available from the UK's Ubishop site. Oh, did you want the artbook, soundtrack, and encyclopedia? Don't worry -- you don't have to buy the game twice. The Ubiworkshop is selling the encyclopedia.

The trailer for Assassin's Creed: Embers above sees returning protagonist Ezio pontificating on how he's run out of time to conduct his fatherly affairs. We're not sure why he's complaining, though -- he's got until the film (and Revelations!) drops on November 15 to do what needs to be done.

  • Ubisoft: Assassin's Creed: Revelations will be, well, revealing

    by

In an interview with the Guardian, Assassin's Creed creative director Alexandre Amancio explains Ubisoft's mindset when creating Revelations and the caution his team is taking with Altair, Ezio, Desmond and their combined Body Mass Index. "Well, Assassin's Creed has been going since 2007 -- the narrative is very rich and complex, so to avoid collapsing under the weight of our own mythology we needed to wrap up a few mysteries and set things up for what is to come. That's what this game is about: we're giving players some answers from Assassin's 2 and Brotherhood, we're completing the destiny of Altair, and we're tying it in to what's coming in 2012. And obviously, our over-arching storyline has to do with the end of the world in 2012 – we need to set up everything for the conclusion of that narrative. In this game, you'll get to understand why Ezio is so important and how his destiny his aligned to Altair's and to Desmond's." It appears Amancio is focused on completing the first arc of the Assassin's Creed series with an emphasis on character development and clarifying the franchise's future, which can't be very vast considering he's counting on the world to end next year.

  • Rumor: 'Seizure' caught on tape for Assassin's Creed: Revelations [update]

    07.22.2011

A lot of disturbing videos slither their way onto the Internet, and many can linger unnoticed in the bowels of YouTube for years -- but not this one. Hosted on Kazakh sharing site Kiwi, this video is not only gruesome, it's mysterious. Here's what we know: It's titled "Assassins creed revelations Seizure - Ubisoft." It is described by the uploader as "an internal project we did here at Ubisoft Cinematics. I animated the character on the table. No mocap whatsoever." It features a serene doctor performing barbaric head surgery on a living dead man, all in the name of "memory binding." It is absolutely gorgeous. You can watch it right here. We don't know what this is, but we have some theories. For one, the Animus had to start somewhere, and Subject 1 may as well have been a schizophrenic guy with a broken back. For two, we don't think this is part of any actual Assassin's Creed game -- but it could be a supplemental short film, perhaps part of the Assassin's Creed: Embers short. Or, of course, it could be a really clever fan work. We're running our ideas by Ubisoft for clarification, or perhaps an impromptu, company-wide lobotomy. Update: The audio and visual inspiration is most definitely ripped straight from Jacob's Ladder, meaning this piece probably wasn't made for public release. Even if it is only an internal animation test, this baby deserves to be in the public eye (and frontal lobes).

  • Assassin's Creed Wii U title isn't Revelations

    by
    Richard Mitchell

    07.18.2011

We may not know what the Wii U Assassin's Creed project will be, but at least we know what it won't be. According to Ubisoft head Yves Guillemot, it won't be Assassin's Creed: Revelations. In an interview with Swedish site AftonBladet.se, Guillemot noted that the announced Wii U Assassin's Creed title is "not Revelations," but something for "the future." Of course, Guillemot's comments don't rule out the possibility of a Revelations port sometime in, you know, "the future." The executive wouldn't confirm whether or not the currently announced AC title would be Assassin's Creed 3. For our part, we're imagining something like Raving Rabbids, only with hidden blades. In response to our own inquiries, a Ubisoft representative told Joystiq that the company doesn't have "any new information" regarding the Wii U Assassin's Creed project.

  • Assassin's Creed: Lost Legacy's concept found in Revelations

    by
    Ben Gilbert

    07.14.2011

Living up to its name, Ubisoft's 3DS game Assassin's Creed: Lost Legacy seemed to slip between the cracks and disappear over the past year. First revealed during Nintendo's big E3 2010 coming out party for the 3DS, little was known of the title other than its premise: "Driven by curiosity and a desire to understand the origins of his Order, Ezio Auditore travels East in search of the lost castle at Masyaf, the ancient seat of the Assassins." But that disappearance was no accident -- apparently the concept for AC: LL is what formed the foundation for this holiday's big AC release, Assassin's Creed: Revelations. Eventually, the 3DS project was dropped in favor of a console release for the final installment in Ezio's assassination hat trick. AC: R lead writer Darby McDevitt explained as much to me during an interview this afternoon. "You may have heard of the game 'Lost Legacy' for the 3DS. It was announced, but that kind of morphed into this idea," he said. While that doesn't mean we'll never see an AC title on Nintendo's latest handheld, it does mean that Lost Legacy is no longer on the cards. And if an AC game does end up on the 3DS, it won't look much like what Ubisoft had planned for Lost Legacy, it seems. "The story that was announced about Lost Legacy was that Ezio goes to Masyaf and investigates the holy land," McDevitt laughed, inferring that the story for AC: LL was more or less directly parallel with AC: R. Update: Ubisoft has since officially confirmed that Lost Legacy is canceled with IGN. CFO Alain Martinez explained, ""[The cancellation] was a decision made back in September 2010. It wasn't due to anything that took place. We felt the [Nintendo 3DS] already had a number of hardcore games for its release."
