September 13 is the 'birthday' of everyone's favorite plumber, and Nintendo's not letting September pass without a little recognition. Two new DS games this month feature Mario and company: the highly anticipated Mario Hoops 3 on 3 and the offbeat Mario vs. Donkey Kong 2: March of the Minis. Salut! And many happy returns.Mario Hoops is scheduled for release next week, and March of the Minis follows two weeks later. If only every month could be September.

Never ones to shy away from shameless self promotion, or to hold back on birthday extravagances, we're proud to present a fresh collection of takes on the Engadget logo created by readers of the newly 1-year-old Engadget Spanish for their birthday contest. The first and second place winners received a PEBL and a SanDisk Sansa respectively, but every submission upholds the high standards of mad-Engadget-love we've come to expect from our own reader contests. Check the read link for the rest of the pics, alongside snarky commentary in a language we can barely order take-out in.

  • Nintendo sends President Bush DS Lite, Brain Age

At first glance, you might think we were kidding. We're not. President Bush turns a whole sixty years old tomorrow, and Nintendo of America felt fit to send him a birthday package of their own creation: a white DS Lite, a copy of Brain Age: Train Your Brain For Minutes A Day, and a nice congratulatory letter (read it after the break).Aside from being absolutely ridiculous (guy at Nintendo who thought to do this, I love you), one must wonder if President Bush will receive the package personally and actually attempt to play a round. Just think! With rigorous training, President Bush may usher in a new era of world peace! Sudoku transcends all cultural barriers.Marketing genius, Nintendo. I wonder what his initial Brain Age would be... (watches as the commenters rush to post the largest number they know)Once again, the full letter from Nintendo after the break.[via GoNintendo]

That's right, roughly a year ago this blog kicked off, with posts that looked a lot like the ones we have now. We've decided to celebrate our birthday on July 4th (that's right, we're giving you a day off of work to celebrate HD Beat). It's been a great year of high-def news, from easter eggs to Entourage, from 1080p to Ultra HD, and we look forward to giving you even more in the next year. We'd like to thank our friend Kevin who brought us all to HD Beat, and of course you our readers and commenters. We'll recount a few of our favorite (and least-favorite) HD stories from the past year and we invite all to contribute in the comments.

Wow, time really flies. Just a little over a year ago we had a bun in the oven called Engadget Spanish, and now it's all grown up and celebrating its first birthday. Next thing you know it's gonna be thiiis big and off to college, married, and with little Engadget spinoffs blogs of its own, and we'll just br here still blogging in English with our empty nest syndrome, hopefully collecting blogger social security. Oh, by the way, we hear they're giving something away -- but we won't spoil the surprise. Feliz cumpleaños Engadget Español!

It was the speedy blue hedgehog's fifteenth birthday on Saturday so, to commemorate the occasion, Sega of Japan has created this gorgeous little papercraft (.pdf) of Sonic the Hedgehog's equivalent to World 1-1: Green Hill Zone. Just cut it out, assemble it, and place it in the center of your retro-gaming shrine and, just for a little while, Mario and his army of nostalgia-laced tchotchkes will play second fiddle to Sonic and his paper playground. Live it up. Build - Sonic Green Hill Zone papercraft (.pdf) Read - Build Sonic a paper model to celebrate his big birthday!

  • Microsoft to Apple: Happy Birthday!

What a grand gesture. Five more years of Office wasn't enough, so Microsoft went the extra mile and released a fully-functional, virtualization app called VirtualPC XP for Intel Macs... Nah! I'm just kidding. They popped a JPEG up on their site saying how happy they have been to ride on the coattails of an innovator for the past 22 years. Or something like that. You can see the birthday card from the Microsoft MacBU to Apple here. It could have been worse. They could have said: "After 22 years, and a decade-long headstart on the GUI, you are still #2." I'm thankful for small favors. Truth is, Apple should be thanking Microsoft for sticking through the lean times. Oh, and that infusion of cash a few years back didn't hurt (awkward to witness though). So thanks Microsoft, now where's that new version of Virtual PC, hm?[thanks to Derrick G. for sending this in]

Ah, it's ok, you can admit that you forgot our birthday. It's not too late to send us gift basket or anything, but you know how we roll here at Engadget, and so to celebrate our 2nd anniversary we're blowing it out with seven days of giveaways. We're kicking things off with chance to win a brand new Slingbox. Winning this fine prize is easy: just tell us what's your favorite Engadget post of the past year. It can be anything (except this post): a regular post, an interview, a how-to, a review, or whatever, just post a comment below with a link to it along with a couple of lines about why it's your fave and we'll pick a winner at random. Three runners-up will each win an Engadget t-shirt.A couple of things: 1. You can only enter each day's contest once. If you post more than once you'll be automatically disqualified and barred from all future giveaways. (Yes, we're checking thoroughly to ensure fairness.)2. You can only win once. (If you win and go for a second prize, you'll be automatically disqualified and barred, etc.)3. Contests are open to anyone, anywhere. Unless you work for Engadget or Weblogs, Inc.We'll keep comments open for about 24 hours, best of luck to everyone and thanks for all of your support for these past two years!

  • Happy Birthday, Woz

Apple co-founder Steve Wozniak was born on this date in 1950. That would make him 55 years old. Before the age of 30 he'd already created the software and hardware for what became the Apple II. Today he has a collection of Segways and spends his days educating kids. Me? I'm on the verge of 35, I don't even have a pogo stick and I am blogging in my pajamas. How depressing.Happy Birthday, Woz!Thanks wirobro and others who reminded us.
