  • WoW Moviewatch: What to do with 60 boxes...

No, I don't know why anyone would have 60 World of Warcraft boxes in their house. (Perhaps entirely for this purpose?) And call me crazy, but somehow lining them up in my living room and knocking them over doesn't come to mind as something to do with them. But then again, that's probably why I don't make the videos, I just post 'em.

  • Ubisoft's steering wheel, boxed

It's the doughnut, ready and willing to cradle your Wiimote while you take those hairpin turns. If you're not picking up GT Pro Series or Monster 4x4 (both of which come packaged with the wheel), then you can snag one of these for a pretty reasonable $19.99. While it may look funny (and so will you when using it), the steering wheel has actually gotten some pretty good reviews, the most recent from Chris Kohler of GameLife.Check after the jump for the back of the box.

  • Wii box back claims console comes with startup disc

This snapshot of the back of the Wii box, found at an EB Games, has the whole of the Nintendo-lovin' internet collectively stroking their chin and raising a single eyebrow in silent contemplation. Some think this "startup disc" is none other than Wii Sports, while others claim it to be a disc controlling the OS of the system. Some have said it is none other than the Opera browser, however we feel that is likely untrue. What do you guys think?[Via Joystiq]

  • Back of the Wii box sparks speculation

The good people at Wiixors snagged some decent shots of the back of the Wii box at an EB Games and, besides making us want one of our very own, it has caused a few rumors to pop up -- namely, what is the Wii Startup Disc? The rumors seem to be split into several camps: One says it's nothing more than the Wii Sports disc; others say it's an OS disc; other still say it's the Wii Opera browser, some sort of tutorial, or something far more insidious ... like a firmware update. It's a mystery. If it's just the Wii Sports disc, why wouldn't the box say that? There's already a huge notice on the front of the box proclaiming the Wii Sports disc to be inside, so what else could it be? What do you want it to be?[Via GoNintendo]

  • New Wii boxes, just like the old boxes [update 2]

The boxes for three more Wii games have been finalized -- Metal Slug Anthology, Tony Hawk's Downhill Jam and Monster 4x4 World Circuit all got the stamp of officialized boxart love from IGN. Since none of these games are unique to the Wii, the boxes are no great revelation, but they're pretty because they're ours.[Update 1: Seems there are multiple versions of the Tony Hawk box floating around. Some have the WiFi logo and some don't. Could the logo be a mistake from someone putting the boxart together and not paying attention, or is it a sign of things to come? We're looking into it.][Update 2: Spoke with our Activision rep, who indicated that any boxes floating around with the WiFi logo must be placeholders -- nothing has changed in regard to the lack of WiFi support for the Wii at this time. And we were so excited. Beware, beware of placeholder boxes! Thanks to our eagle-eyed readers on this one.]

  • New Slingbox supports Mac OS X, Symbian - but where's the software?

It's time to check in again on the Slingbox's journey to Mac OS X, as Dave Zatz pinged us with some more details and a purty picture he took off one of the new Slingbox AV models at Best Buy. Turns out there are going to be three new models - Tuner, AV and Pro. Tuner ($150) goes the bare bones route for regular cable or antenna, AV ($180)can interact with a set top box, and Pro ($250) is the One to Rule Them All™ with support for multiple feeds and that hot new 'HD' thing the internets keep talking about. The interesting thing, as you can see, is that these new models list support for Mac OS X (as well as Symbian) right on the box, but as we learned a couple weeks ago, the company is still in the middle of a private beta of their SlingPlayer software for the Mac - nothing is public yet. So for now, it sounds like they're cranking out these boxes without actually having any way for John Doe Mac user to work with them, though after an update over on Dave Zatz's original story, we might have a public beta of the software very soon.If any of you rush out to grab one of these, feel free to let us know if there are some wires mixed here and Mac OS X software actually is shipping in the box.

  • TGS: PS3 game case revealed

To the right of a long wall of playable PS3 demos (and a few trailers running on PS3s), Sony had on hand two PlayStation 3 units encased in cylindrical glass. Unlike previous viewings, this time Sony showed off what we presume is the final case design for its PS3 games. The two cases shown were for Grand Turismo HD and Heavenly Sword. The case designs were identical to what IGN reported about a few weeks back. However, both their mockup and our my speculation were off regarding the outside shell, which is translucent and features only a tiny Blu-ray engraving in the top-left corner of the box.More pictures of the cases after the break.See Also:PS3 box shot: Photoshop at its finest?

We don't have much to say here, folks. This is some beautiful work, and some of the finest pieces of box art we've ever seen (I'm partial to Unlimited Saga, myself). What do you think? Is the Wii identifier at the top too much? You can't always judge a book by its cover, but we're sure hoping we can with this one.

IGN has managed to get a glimpse of the PlayStation 3 case for The Untold Legends: Dark Kingdom (you can tell by the IGN logo they so elegantly plastered on the cover girl's left breast). The PlayStation 3 name, Spider-Man typeset intact, aligns the left side of the case, as it did during the PSOne era, so as not to intrude upon Blu-ray's dominant upper banner. The PS logo has undergone a minor alteration, now showing up against a white backdrop. The rest remains unchanged -- an ESRB rating located in the bottom left corner, the publisher's emblem in the bottom right. Since the title is made by Sony Online Entertainment, we're unsure how other titles are going to market each game's online capabilities or exclusivity. The Xbox 360 case, for example, has the Xbox Live logo emblazoned in the top right corner of every title, and stamps "Only for Xbox 360" on the upper middle. Will Sony push its online capabilities on its title's box art, or just rely on other outlets to advertise its features?Continue reading for more side-by-side comparisons.[Update: it should be noted that, while the graphic itself is legitimate, its inclusion on the Blu-ray box is a mockup done by IGN. However, note the dimensions of the graphic -- it matches that of the dimensions of the cover art on a Blu-ray movie. Also, Sony producing a custom Blu-ray box when it already is manufacturing Blu-ray movie boxes is not cost-efficient. It may be conceptualized, but we believe the final case will not look much different. That said, sorry if we confused anyone.]

It might be coming someday, just not anytime soon. In response to those shots of the advertisements included in the recently-released Invasion DVD boxed set, Warner has issued an official statement that they currently have no plans to make the seventh season of The West Wing available on HD DVD. The standard-def DVD launch is still on for November 7, but no HD at this time. The good news is that Smallville still appears to be on track.

This laptop shade isn't going to win any beauty contests (though I bet it will garner so comments), but it is cheap and easy. So if you're worried about the MacBook's glossy screen worry not, as long as you have access to a cardboard box that is.[via Make]

There you have it. The final package design for the DS Lite doesn't really wow us all that much, but you can bet the handheld will when it releases in just 18 days. Trust me, I know, I held Ludwig's for about 3 seconds during E3.Best 3 seconds of my life. The worst 3 seconds followed when I tried to make off with it and he beat me to near death without mercy.

From giant cardboard boxes to smaller cardboard boxes to DVD cases. The IEMA on Friday announced a new packaging for computer games. As seen to the right, the box mimics the style popular with console game packaging. The first game to use this standardized packaging will be Madden 2007 (although The Sims has been using similar casing for awhile now). You can download the press release (pdf file) here. Interested in the history of video game packaging? Wikipedia has an entire page devoted to it.[via 1up]

With the Nintendo Wii interface, gamers are beginning to recognize the importance of a this new level of innovation. However we are also beginning to understand that it's going to take some time for developers to bring this type of immersion into a more unambiguous experience for everyone. Tucked away within the bowels of E3 was SDW Games and their TV Fighter. As you can see from the picture, the gamer controls it with boxing gloves. Theoretically, this could have been really fun, but what is it about cheaply made peripherals that seem to completely take away the experience?

It has become something of a yearly tradition that Apple changes the packaging and overall look of iLife marketing materials. This year we get the iLife 'ribbon o' fun' and a much smaller retail box.Less packaging is good for the environment, but Cameron Moll wants to know if you like the new look of the packaging. Let him know, and feel free to comment here as well.[via Daring Fireball]
