Activision just sent word that the multiplayer map DLC for Call of Duty: World at War (otherwise known as Map Pack 1) has surpassed a combined worldwide download milestone of 2 million units across the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3. Needless to say, Activision seems pleased ... and why wouldn't it be? Map Pack 1 already broke Xbox Live sales records, selling one million units in its first week of availability.Treyarch studio head, Mark Lamia, took a moment to comment on the "milestone," thanking the loyal community of World at War players for supporting the game -- and presumably, for not being completely tired of World War II themed shooters. Lamia also reminds gamers the World at War team expects to deliver new DLC sometime this June.

It's good to be the king, and no other title would know that better than Halo 3, which still reigns supreme at the top of the Xbox Live activity charts. According to Major Nelson, the latest figures show Bungie's crouching-on-dead-enemy-faces-sim beating out other fan favorites, Call of Duty: World at War and Call of Duty 4. On the XBLA side, the dual release of Virtual On and Banjo-Tooie proved to be quite the alluring mix, as both titles populated the top of the XBLA list. Now if only we could get a game that combines birds, backpacks, bears, and gigantic death machines ...

What do you do after selling one million Call of Duty: World at War map packs during their first week of availability? You make more. And, lo, Activision and developer Treyarch are doing just that, prepping a second salvo of DLC for a June release. The Call of Duty: World at War Map Pack 2 (c'mon, guys, you can surely come up with something catchier using all that dough) will introduce three new multiplayer maps: "Banzai," a jungle environment riddled with caves; "Corrosion," a Russian train yard; and "Sub Pens," a rain-drenched submarine base. That's all well and good, but now for the good stuff: a new Nazi Zombie map! "Shi No Numa," home to this guy, promises new Perk machines, a new weapon, new Achievements / Trophies and flaming Hell hounds. It also promises to keep our repository of nightmare material well-stocked.

Update: Apparently neither Sega or High Voltage approved this video, and it was uploaded by accident. At the request of Sega and High Voltage, we've removed it from the post.High Voltage dares you. This isn't some kind of silly kid's dare, though. No, this is a triple dog-dare, the coup de grace of all dares. And, after watching the video past the break, which compares The Conduit to the likes of other Wii FPS games such as Metroid Prime 3, Red Steel, and Call of Duty: World at War, we'd say High Voltage has certainly made its case. Folks can't get enough of those Mythic maps, as Halo 3 frags its way to the top of the Xbox Live charts for another week. The siren's song of plasma grenades and billion-dollar cyborgs bested the Nazi zombie-killing antics of Halo nemesis, Call of Duty: World at War. On the Xbox Live Arcade side, the first and second placeholders from last week have switched, with Hasbro Family Game Night taking the top spot on the charts, and OutRun Online Arcade moving down to the second spot. For the full rundown, hit up Major Nelson's stats.

  • EEDAR: DLC to drive AAA title revenue up 10 percent by 2010

DLC can expand a game in many ways. Not only can it expand the experience offered by a title, but it can also expand your wallet, take out your money, and place it in the hands of publishers and developers. And, by 2010, EEDAR predicts that "the average AAA title should be able to earn an additional 10% in revenue by releasing additional content through digital distribution."It's not a hard pill to swallow; DLC packs such as The Lost and Damned and Call of Duty: World at War's Map Pack 1 have been selling like virtual hotcakes, and Sony has been milking LittleBigPlanet in all the appropriate ways. Also, let's not forget about Criterion Games, the company that has been adding value consistently to its Burnout Paradise game. Of course, gamers have been complaining about paid DLC just as consistently.

Update: Shacknews reports World at War's Map Pack 1 DLC has sold over 1 million downloads across both the Xbox 360 and PS3 since launch.According to a press release, DLC for Call of Duty: World at War has set a first week sales record on Xbox Live Marketplace. Proving you don't need a marketing team to dream up whimsical names to sell product, Map Pack 1 has been downloaded ... well, the exact number is unclear, but it's apparently a lot. In fact, since the DLC's release, over 150 million multiplayer sessions have been played. The Call of Duty franchise isn't new to the Xbox DLC record book, as Modern Warfare's Variety Map Pack previously shattered records with over 1 million downloads within the first 9 days of release. World at War - Map Pack 1 (which leads us to believe more is on the way) is available now for the Xbox 360 and PS3 for 800 / $9.99.

  • PETA joins protest against World at War's attack dogs

Following a Massachusetts high school petition protesting the treatment of dogs in Call of Duty: World at War, the People for Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA) is now joining the protest as well. Upon seeing news of the protest, PETA sent publisher Activision Blizzard an invitation to take one of its "Developing Empathy for Animals" seminars for free. The organization has also sent the company a package of Nintendogs for the DS, which it deems "dog-friendly." PETA hopes the puppy sim will help influence Activision's treatment of animals in future games, with the organization's blog noting "perhaps the next Call of Duty game will have you unlock achievements for petting the dogs you encounter and going on walks or playing Frisbee with them."Is that before or after the Nazi attack dog bites the player's hand off?

Breanna Lucci, a student at Massachusetts' Academy of Notre Dame high school, has a bone to pick with Activision. (Which, we imagine, she'll later give to her two Pomeranians, "Fluffy" and "Winnie The Pooh.") Lucci, the president of her school's Animal Rights Club, is upset by the need to shoot Nazi attack dogs in Call of Duty: World at War. So, she's started a petition."Parents need to know what they are buying their kids. Killing animals should not be a form of entertainment," Lucci told the local Lowell Sun. She was first introduced to the game's canine genocide while watching her college aged brother playing. "My little 12-pound Pomeranian, Winnie the Pooh, is sitting next to him, and I'm thinking, 'This looks horrible!'" Although she's sure her brother "won't be killing dogs after playing," she believes "some people might." Lucci plans to forward her petition, which has been signed by more than 100 of her fellow students, to Activision. Contrary to some petitions aimed at game publishers, hers is simply a show of disgust, and does not call for any executives to be fired, boiled alive or hung by their feet until dead. You go, girl.[Via GamePolitics]

The first piece of downloadable content for Call of Duty: World at War is now available on Xbox Live and (coming later today on) PSN. For 800 ($9.99), you can pick up four new maps for Activision's WWII shooter: "Station," a close-quarters underground encounter; "Nightfire," a large battlefield depicting a bombed-out Berlin; "Knee Deep," a huge, jungle-based scenario; and "Verrückt," the promised Nazombie expansion, which, aside from meriting its own trailer (posted after the jump), contains additional weapons, Perks-a-Cola machines and "electroshock defenses." Man, we had no idea history could be so totally awesome.

Have you heard about this game called Call of Duty: World at War? It's some sort of new army experience developed by Treyarch, where you kill other army people using guns. Pretty crazy, right? Well, there's a 932MB World at War demo, featuring both single-player and four-player online co-op, available for download from the Xbox Live Marketplace right now..Wait, wait, wait. Hold up. Does a multi-million selling game really need to release a demo after all this time? Don't tell us you haven't bought it yet![Via Major Nelson]

We've known since last month that Call of Duty: World at War would be getting scads of new content sometime this month, but Gamespot has just pinned that to a much more concrete March 19. As you might remember, the pack includes three new maps for the living, Nightfire, Station, and Knee Deep, and one new area in which to battle the zombie hordes: Zombie Verruckt, which you can read all about here. The only thing we still haven't heard about is a price, but we'd bet our (as yet) uneaten brains that you'll be ponying up $10.

  • Halo 3 back on top of Live charts, Halo Wars debuts at #6

    03.10.2009

Our very personal bestest friend, Major Nelson, has posted Xbox Live activity for the week of March 2nd. Halo continues its never-ending battle with Call of Duty with Halo 3 nudging World at War from the top spot. Call of Duty 4, Gears of War 2 (somehow) and GTAIV round out the top five. The Halo series receives some backup this week, with newcomer Halo Wars debuting at number six. On top of that, the Halo Wars demo inched up the top ten, moving from the ninth most played to the eighth. FIFA 09 moves up a notch to number 9, shoving Street Fighter IV to the tenth spot.Considering the limited edition of Halo Wars including the Mythic Map Pack, it might have had something to do with Halo 3 reclaiming the top spot. The big question now is whether or not Halo Wars can maintain its momentum. As one of the few RTS games to make a big splash on consoles, you can bet Microsoft is watching it closely.

If you haven't already guessed by the circus train of trailers that surfaced today, last night's episode of GameTrailers TV provided a cornucopia of previews for a number of hotly anticipated games and DLC expansions. First on the docket is an interview with Bethesda's Todd Howard, who in addition to revealing a self-surgery minigame that didn't quite make it to the retail version of Fallout 3, gives a few details regarding the upcoming The Pitt expansion, and promises a new trailer for the DLC in the next installment of GTTV.Next, Todd Hollenshead, CEO of id Software, shows off carpocalypse sim Rage, and gives a few scant details on the next Doom title (shockingly, it will be like the last three). Also, High Voltage's Eric Nofsinger drops a few factoids about The Conduit, and the first footage of Call of Duty: World at War's new maps sees the light of day. There's something for everyone -- especially the ladies, courtesy of a sizable dose of Keighley.

In celebration of last week's Makin Map DLC release, Call of Duty: World at War soldiers will receive double XP all weekend long. From Friday through the early morning hours of Monday, March 12, double XP will be enabled on all gaming platforms including PS3 and Xbox 360. Twice the experience points is an added incentive to get online over the weekend, though we doubt hardcore World at War gamers really need convincing. It's still a nice gesture, though, Treyarch.

Another week in Xbox Live activity goes down in history, and snatching the crown for most played during the week of February 23 is none other than Call of Duty: World at War. Been there, done that, we know, but in more exciting news, the Braid price drop really helped the game out, propelling it to be the top-selling Arcade title this week. • February's Wii software usage: Smash Bros. still on top, Animal Crossing sees boost

MTV Multiplayer's Stephen Totilo recently posted a breakdown of the amount of playtime users logged during the month of February for various Wii titles using statistics that are readily available on the Nintendo Channel. Most of the results are unsurprising -- the top three spots are currently occupied by Super Smash Bros. Brawl, Guitar Hero III and Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess, respectively. Those three titles have remained in said spots since September of last year. However, a number of games saw massive usage boosts over the past month -- most notably, the average user's monthly playtime with Animal Crossing: City Folk increased nearly seven hours, bringing the game to a fifth-place finish for February. Similarly, Call of Duty: World at War's average playtime increased over five hours, bringing it up to 13th place. Sadly, Ninjabread Man didn't place at all -- but that won't stop us from holding out hope for a strong March showing.
