Available today, courtesy of developer Treyarch, is a new patch for Call of Duty: World at War as well as a free multiplayer map. The map isn't exactly new, but could be especially satisfying for soldiers who prefer battling without the cover of night. The new "Makin Day" map is a remake of current World at War offering Makin, with a generous splash of the sun's daylight glow. The map is installed automatically with the PlayStation 3 version of the patch and Xbox 360 users can grab the free content via the Xbox Live Marketplace. Speaking of the patch, a list of platform-specific updates (Xbox 360 / PS3) can be viewed on the official World at War forums. We're sure "Rocket Jumpers" will be none too pleased to discover their special ability has been taken away.[Via Major Nelson]

  • Father knows best: Son can play Call of Duty (by Geneva Convention rules)

Hugh Spencer is an awesome dad. Not only is he active in his son Evan's life, but he's a pretty funny guy. When Evan told him he wanted to play Call of Duty: World at War, Hugh eyed the T-rating for the game and worried that the content might not be suitable for his son. So he thought of a compromise.Introducing the Geneva Convention to Evan, Hugh said he could play the game, but only if he and his team followed the rules set forth in the GC. What makes this so funny is that, in all honesty, the Geneva Convention has no place in this particular FPS. You're not taking prisoners in the game, and even if you could hear the opposing team's cries for mercy online, what could you really do? You can't round them up, place them in shelter, and feed them 3 meals a day. That game is called The Sims. Also, as good an idea as this was on Hugh's part, we wonder how he planned (if at all) to enforce it. Is he going to sit there and watch little Evan play every single match? Also, do Nazi zombies have rights?[Via GamePolitics]

  • FEAR 2 debuts at #2 in UK charts

Call of Duty: World At War continues its slow descent down the UK Charts this week, ending up at number four, while Wii Fit clings onto the number one spot for the millionth week in a row. New contender FEAR 2 gives an admirable performance, making its way to the number two spot, though we suspect this may not last very long. House Of The Dead: Overkill sadly didn't make the top ten, instead coming in at number 15. Considering the number of Wii owners clamoring for hardcore games, they don't seem to be buying them when they actually appear. With Wii Fit, Wii Play, Mario Kart Wii and Mario And Sonic At The Olympic Games all in the top ten week after week, is it any wonder developers are more likely to produce waggle-thons and mini-game collections for the console?

  • Wii sales propel Call of Duty: World at War past COD4

Chew on this: Call of Duty: World at War had greater combined US sales on current-gen consoles in its first three months of release than did Call of Duty 4. World at War achieved this milestone despite COD4 outselling it by nearly 400,000 Xbox 360 units during the comparable months. A rise in PS3 sales from COD4 to World at War -- just over 130,000 units -- helped to slightly offset this difference, but the introduction of a Wii version of World at War (COD4 had no such entry) tipped the scales in favor of the latest Call of Duty entry. In December alone, the Wii World at War (pictured) sold more than 366,000 units. This trend spotting is a result of analyst Matt Matthews' work (published on Gamasutra) and seems to indicate that Wii is a profitable platform for third-party publishers; at least, for Activision, which had two multiplatform titles with Wii versions in the January NPD Top 10. As for our Xbox 360 and PS3 sales assumptions, uh, analysis? Gears of War 2 and Left 4 Dead definitely hindered World at War sales on Xbox 360 from November through January, while on PS3, there simply wasn't a strong resistance to choosing World at War as the holiday's go-to shooter. Will Modern Warfare 2 follow suit? We expect a surge in both PS3 and Xbox 360 enlisters -- but we're not sold on the concept of modern warfare on Wii ... and neither is Infinity Ward, we imagine.

  • Activision Blizzard loses $72m in Q4 '08; outlook misses '09 expectations

Bobby Kotick and co. got together for the Activision Blizzard earnings report this afternoon and dropped a few numbers on their investors, aside from confirming a mess of games that still haven't officially been announced yet. After reconfirming what we told you a few weeks ago regarding the $1 billion in sales of Guitar Hero III, Kotick went on to note, "In North America, Activision Blizzard was the #1 third-party console and handheld software publisher in dollars for the calendar year, according to The NPD Group."And how did the company fare during the holiday season? As you might expect, due to releases like Call of Duty: World at War, Guitar Hero: World Tour (which outsold Rock Band 2 at 2:1 in 2008) and a little expansion you may have heard of called Wrath of the Lich King, "Activision Blizzard was the #1 console, handheld and PC publisher in the U.S. and Europe, according to The NPD Group, Charttrack and Gfk." Unfortunately, during a recession like this, even being "the #1 console, handheld and PC publisher in the U.S. and Europe" wasn't enough, with the company losing $72 million in Q4, or 5 cents a share, and announcing a 2009 outlook that falls shy of Wall Street's expectations. Sometimes it's tough being the king.

Click to embiggen. Following in the footsteps of the Call of Dutys before it, World at War will be getting a brand new multiplayer map pack in March on Xbox 360, PS3, and PC. For an undisclosed price, you'll be able to add "Nightfire" (source of the above image), "Station," "Knee Deep" and "Verrückt (Zombie Asylum)" to your list of playgrounds. See full descriptions of them all, after the break. We reckon this is good news for WaW fans, but bad news for our planet's reserves of WWII locations that haven't yet been turned into video game levels, a resource that's running cataclysmically low. Where's Al Gore when you really need him?

You may remember last month when the above message was seen on construction signs in Austin, a winking reference to Call of Duty: World at War's zombie-annihilating multiplayer mode. Though the staff behind the game says they had nothing to do with the prank, the sentiment isn't far off the mark. Developer Treyarch notes that a new DLC map pack -- arrives "soon" --- will include a fresh zombie level. So, if you're tired of seeing exploded zombie heads plastered all over the same old backgrounds, the dev says "to stay tuned for official word regarding upcoming DLC." We'll let you know what we hear.

The PC gaming industry may not quite have the earth-shaking force of its heyday, but PC gamers still enjoy the occasional perk. Take for instance the sweet, sweet nectar of patches and updates often weeks or months (Team Fortress 2?) before their console brethren. Tomorrow, PC gamers will enjoy just such a bounty when Call of Duty: World at War gets patched to version 1.2.Besides the expansive list of changes -- which you can find right after the break -- PC players will also get to feast their mouses on a brand new map! ... OK, sure, it's just a daytime version of the "Makin" map. But it's so free! And so not on consoles.

Major Nelson just released his weekly report on Xbox Live activity for the week of January 26th -- and there really isn't anything out of the ordinary on the list. Call of Duty: World at War reigns supreme on the Live charts, Halo 3 is sitting at a comfortable second, CoD4 at third, Gears 2 at fourth and Left 4 Dead rounds out the top five. As far as XBLA releases go, The Maw and all its purpleness is number one, Castle Crashers number two and (interestingly enough) Worms makes an appearance at the third position. The full list of Xbox Live activity for retail, XBLA, original Xbox and Community Games is viewable after the break.

  • UK charts: Wii Fit, Call of Duty still on top, Professor Layton climbing

The week ending January 31st saw no movement at all in the top two spots on the UK sales charts. Wii Fit maintains its top spot on the UK sales charts for a third week, followed by previous champ Call of Duty: World at War. Skate 2, which debuted last week at #3, has dropped to #5 behind FIFA '09 and Professor Layton and the Curious Village, which, like Wii Fit, is experiencing increased sales due to long-awaited replenishment of stock. Mario Kart Wii rose two positions to #6, leading us to wonder if, over the course of 2009, the top half of the charts will steadily fill with Nintendo hits from 2008.[Via Edge]

  • Top 5 selling games in 2008 across global markets

NPD, GfK Chart-Track and Enterbrain have combined video game software sales lists for the respective regions they cover to declare Mario Kart Wii as the top selling game of 2008. Games sales across the "world's three largest games markets" saw an 11% increase, totaling 409.9 million units last year.Top five selling games for US, UK and Japan combined: Mario Kart Wii - 8.94 million Wii Fit - 8.31 million Grand Theft Auto IV - 7.29 million Super Smash Bros. Brawl - 6.32 million Call of Duty: World at War - 5.89 million The rankings are almost identical to Edge's "guesstimate" sales list released last week, which included all of Europe, but not Japan. Overall, the US and UK markets saw increases of 15% and 26%, respectively. The Japanese market saw a 13% decline in software sales, which Enterbrain explains has little to do with the current generation of consoles, but is due to the 46% software sales drop on the PS2. Check out the chart after the break for a regional dissection of the software ranks.

War is hell ... unless you're getting twice the experience. This weekend, Call of Duty: World at War is once again rewarding players with double experience for all multiplayer modes. Not enough for you? World at War is also introducing two brand new game types into its playlist rotation: Team Tactical and Mercenary TDM. Team Tactical is a 4v4 playlist that pits two teams up against each other in random objective scenarios, while Mercenary TDM does not allow for parties in favor of random team match-ups. New playlists have gone live today for both Xbox 360 and PS3 players. The Double-XP event will run from today, January 30, until February 1. Happy hunting.[Thanks, Rhinosaur]

For a few hours on Monday morning in Austin, Texas, it seemed as if the world was coming to an end, as two road signs warned of "Nazi zombies!" KXAN has a full report, but apparently doesn't have any gamers on staff, as it completely missed the Call of Duty: World at War reference. Come on mainstream media, y'all missed a great opportunity to blame games for something. The "hackers" who changed the signs committed a class C misdemeanor, which in the state of Texas automatically carries the death penalty ... no, that's not true, but we're sure branding is involved. Check out the full news report after the break.[Thanks, Rick]

Today is a day to be proud, Xbox Live enthusiast. For one more week, you've managed to keep the menacing onslaught of undead Nazis at bay, allowing our children to sleep safely and our brains to remain snugly tucked away in our skulls. Humanity's silver-haired reporter, one Larry "Major Nelson" Hryb, explains that Call of Duty: World at War was the top game played the week of January 19th on Xbox Live.He was also able to break down the data for people who used their Xbox for things other than fighting the good fight. Like lazing around and playing Xbox Live Arcade games. See the list of draft dodgers past the jump.

  • Wii Fit dominates UK charts, Skate 2 makes strong debut

Wii Fit remains at the top of the UK charts for the week ending January 24th, closely followed by its buddy Call of Duty World At War at number 2. These two games are trying their best not to let anyone into their special "Top Two" club, despite EA's numerous attempts so far this year. Lord of the Rings: Conquest, which showed strong sales when it debuted at number 3 in the charts, has now dropped to number 4.This makes way for EA's newest contender, Skate 2, which has also managed to reach number 3 in the charts during its debuting week. Strong sales, but not strong enough to beat Call of Duty: World At War, which has been hovering up there for over two months now. The strangest story is Wii Fit's, however, as it has jumped up from 33rd to 1st in the last three weeks. We're not sure what sparked this Wii Fit resurgence ... perhaps being constantly told they're overweight by their government has finally had an impact on UK citizens.

New Xbox Live activity figures for the week of January 12th have just made their way online thanks to one Major Nelson and claiming the number one spot is Treyarch's Call of Duty: World at War. That zombified weekend must have helped. Halo 3, CoD4, Gears 2 and Left 4 Dead round out the top five. As far as Xbox Live Arcade games go, Castle Crashers sits on top, partly due to the fact that new DLC just released. It looks like your weekend plans may now have to be canceled. Call Of Duty: World At War will be awarding double experience from 1pm EST today until Monday morning. Yes, the double EXP has already started, but before you scamper off towards your PS3 you might also like to know that the nazi zombie mode has been unlocked for everyone. You no longer need to have completed the game in order to play this mode. A sneaky twofer from Treyarch which pretty much guarantees that those who have World At War will be playing it throughout the weekend. Enjoy.

Due to popular demand, Treyarch is now opening up Call of Duty: World at War's Nazi zombie co-op playlist to everyone on PlayStation Network and Xbox Live, nullifying the previous requirement of completing the single-player campaign. For the uninitiated, Nazi zombie co-op has you and up to four others fighting off endless waves of -- you guessed it -- nazi zombies. And before you ask, no, we never tire of nazis or zombie massacres.Treyarch is also giving out double the experience points this weekend. It started this afternoon at 1:00 PM ET and will stay in effect until an undisclosed time -- probably Monday morning, if we had to guess. If you're in desperate need for some double XP, we suggest you take off work / school now and head to your console of choice.[Via X3F; thanks, mdouet!]

Wouldn't you know, Call of Duty: World at War was the number one most played Xbox Live game for the week of January 5th. How ... special? The most played Live games list also informs us that Halo 3 holds the number two spot, Gears of War 2 is firmly planted at the number three spot and CoD4 has slipped to the number four position. Number five, you ask? It's Left 4 Dead.
