  • CoD: World at War gives FIFA 09 the boot, tops UK charts

Just when we'd gotten used to writing a different sort of headline, Treyarch's Call of Duty: World at War once again climbs to the top of the UK all-format software sales charts. After being punted (that's another football joke, you see) from the top spot by FIFA 09 last week, the umpteenth shooter set during the second world war now hopes to restart its stint in first position. It previously held the spot for five consecutive weeks. In other chart news, Need For Speed: Undercover moved back up to third position, with Tomb Raider: Underworld clambering from ninth position to sixth. And who managed to leap up ten to ten? Sonic Unleashed. This thing has more plot twists than a Phoenix Wright trial.

Since its release in 2002, Xbox Live has been a staple in online console gaming. Years later some players even make their buying purchases based on the small green and gold lettering in the top right corner of game boxes. No online? No buy! We've heard it, thought it and even wrote it all over X3F. This year brought us some incredible online gaming experiences from the Gears 2 Horde Mode to an all out Zombie Apocalypse in Left 4 Dead, here are the nominees for Multiplayer (Competitive and Cooperative) Game of the Year.Read more about these five nominees:Burnout ParadiseCall of Duty: World at WarGears of War 2Left 4 DeadRock Band 2Voting closes at 12:01am on December 30, 2008. • Gears 2 stagnant on Xbox Live activity chart despite DLC

That Combustible map pack didn't seem to ignite much passion into Gears of War 2, as the shoe-in for Best Shooter Involving a Chain Saw-infused Rifle Award remains numero quartro on the Xbox Live activity chart for last week. The game was also 4th place the week prior, and 3rd place for two consecutive weeks before that. Far from being a bad position, but it's certainly not dominating the service like its predecessor.Staying strong at top is Halo 3, followed by the Call of Duty: World at War and CoD4, respectively. The promotional Dash of Destruction managed to take 6th place, and somehow bumped Fallout 3 from 8th to oblivion. Full list after the break.[Via Xbox 360 Fanboy]

Gears of War 2 continues slipping down Xbox Live's activity chart, according to Major Nelson's latest report. For the week of Dec. 8, Marcus and company are at the #4 spot, behind top dawgs Halo 3, CoD: World at War and Call of Duty 4.Feel free to let the theories fly as to why the mega-hit title, which holds most of its value in the multiplayer, has slid so fast. Perhaps the new maps and matchmaking server tweaks will bring players back in the coming weeks?

  • CoD: World at War tops UK charts for fifth week

Call of Duty: World at War (CoD:W@W for the more efficient among you) has defended its number one position on the all-format UK game sales charts, extending its reign to a fifth consecutive week despite heavy holiday competition. Mario Kart Wii took the second spot, followed by FIFA '09 and, still quite bizarrely, Need for Speed: Undercover. Oh, but wait until we tell you what's in the fifth spot. Dr. Kawashima's Brain Training. Remember that one?Further down the charts, Ubisoft's cel-shaded scurrier, Prince of Persia, climbed to the 20th position while Sonic Unleashed went from 33rd to 12th. We'll let that sink in for a few moments.

  • World at War back on top in the UK

    12.02.2008

It seems like the United Kingdom just can't get enough of Call of Duty: World at War, as the game is at the top of the all platforms chart once again. Need for Speed Undercover sits at number 2 despite some mixed reviews. FIFA 09, unsurprisingly, is performing well and is the regions third best selling title. Tomb Raider: Underworld is also maintaining strong sales, jumping from number 9 to number 7 since last week. Sadly, other titles, most notably Left 4 Dead don't seem to be performing terribly well in the UK, with the co-op zombie shooter falling all the way down to 34. Finally, if, like us, you've been on pins and needles wondering how Sonic's latest outing has fared in the UK, you should know that Sonic Unleashed failed to crack the top 40 on the multi-platform chart. It did, however, manage to land at number 23 on the Xbox specific chart.

  • Activision hoping for 'two, maybe three' CoD: World at War DLC packs

And depending on how much you enjoyed Treyarch's first-person war-em-up, you might feel the same way. Speaking to MTV Multiplayer, Call of Duty: World at War executive Daniel Suarez teased the game's upcoming DLC, which is to be formally announced in 2009. Activision hopes to improve on the relatively modest DLC released for Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare by creating "potentially two, maybe three packs" before everyone's reeled in by the next CoD. When prodded for specifics about Codwaw dee elsee, Suarez noted, "It's not going to be what we've done traditionally. I'll leave it a little bit mysterious." Ooh! You know what would be radically untraditional? Releasing a few maps for free! We're just saying.

Call of Duty: World at War fans have a reason to be excited for New Years, because Activision has some "unusual" downloadable content in the works and has plans to release 2-3 DLC packs during World at War's lifespan.Talking with MTV Multiplayer, WaW executive producer Daniel Suarez mentioned that their upcoming DLC is "not going to be what we've done traditionally" and will exceed what CoD4 offered in terms of new content. No specific release plans were given and the unusual DLC will remain a mystery. New maps, new modes, new weapons, more single player? We're not sure, but "unusual" DLC is much more exciting than "traditional" DLC.

Treyarch's Call of Duty: World at War has climbed to the top of the UK all-format game sales charts, blasting its way through countless soldiers, explosive set pieces and Need For Speed: Undercover, which was in second place for some reason. Resistance 2 grabbed the tenth spot in its debut, while Sonic Unleashed, as Eurogamer points out, only managed 23rd ... on the Xbox 360-specific chart. Though FIFA 09's third all-format position makes complete sense and matches our envisioned UK stereotypes perfectly, it's somewhat harder to justify the #39 spot held by Mirror's Edge, not to mention Left 4 Dead's #34. Tomb Raider: Underworld, however, managed to go from a 9 to a 7 in a week. Not the first time that's happened.

Looks like the Call of Duty franchise still has plenty of World War II to exploit as World at War outsold Call of Duty 4's debut week in the UK two to one. GI.biz reports that CoD:WaW stands atop the "All Formats" charts, but no actual sales numbers are given, merely chart position. The top ten can be found after the break.Interesting to note is that Activision Blizzard accounted for 25% of all game sales for the week ending Nov. 15, with the one-two punch of CoD:WaW and World of Warcraft: Wrath of the Lich King, followed by several other top performers like the Guitar Hero franchise. Not surprisingly, Lich King is apparently the fastest-selling PC title in UK. People needs their fix!

GI.biz reports that first week sales of Call of Duty: World at War in the UK have exceeded first week sales of Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare by a margin of more than 2 to 1. The game landed in the number one spot in the UK for all platforms according to Chart-Track. Considering the previous installment sold over 10 million copies, it's not too surprising that the latest has managed to pick up significant sales. Another thing that isn't too surprising (though perhaps a little alarming) is that Activision published games make up more than 25% of all game sales in the UK last week (thanks in no small part to the Lich King). The next step: Activision acquires a little start-up named Cyberdyne Systems. OK, so maybe it wasn't developed by Infinity Ward, but that hasn't seemed to dull the praise for Call of Duty: World At War. It's not quite the white-hot, face-melting love heaped upon CoD 4, but it could very well be king of the FPS castle for this holiday season. Yahoo! Games (100/100): "Call of Duty: World at War is clearly one of the top games of this year, and a must have for any action gamer." Team Xbox (92/100): "Call of Duty: World at War was a surprisingly satisfying experience all around. Developer Treyarch really showed that they could be trusted with the keys to Dad's car, and made a game that could be compared favorably to anything Infinity Ward has done." OXM UK (90/100): "Maybe Call of Duty 3's harsh reception has turned out to be a good thing. Treyarch has pushed itself further than ever before and come up with a Call of Duty game that comfortably matches, and sometimes even dares to excel, Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare." Giant Bomb (80/100): "Call of Duty: World at War is a perfectly competent game with exciting multiplayer options and a campaign that's worth playing. But in most of the ways that actually count, last year's game was better."

  • Opinion: Why I can't go beyond the first 5 mins of Call of Duty: World At War

    by
    James Ransom-Wiley

I've been avoiding Call of Duty: World At War. Not because its developer, Treyarch, has yet to inspire me. Not because it's another World War II shooter. I've been avoiding World At War because the featured enemy is the Japanese Empire. Let me explain: While not the first game to portray the Pacific-side of WWII, World At War is the most prominent. One could argue for Medal of Honor's pair of entries, but those came as the franchise was dwindling (not to mention, before and during Joystiq's infancy). World At War follows the overwhelming reception of Call of Duty 4 and benefits from a massive marketing campaign from its publisher, Activision. In short, it's in my face and on my mind.

  • Infinity Ward goes off on Activision for 'bullshit quotes'

    by

    11.10.2008

Well this was unexpected. Infinity Ward community manager Robert Bowling, known as fourzerotwo, recently posted some choice words about Activision producer Noah Heller. Specifically, Bowling asks Heller to "stop doing interviews," saying that he needs to stop comparing Call of Duty: World at War to Call of Duty 4 and that the game can "stand on it's [sic] own merits." Bowling then cites a "bullshit quote" from a recent CVG interview in which Heller states that previous Call of Duty titles required several shots with bolt action rifles to make a kill and says that Treyarch has corrected this in World at War. Responded Bowling: "WTF are you talking about?! ... First of all, you didn't work on 'previous Call of Dutys', so don't talk as if you're down with how / why things were designed the way they were. Second, you're completely fucking wrong."Bowling concludes that World at War has many good features and that Activision would be better off promoting them instead of comparing the game to previous titles. He notes that the media should interview someone from Treyarch that "knows what the fuck they're talking about" and not "Senior Super Douche Noah Heller from Activision - who apparently has never played the game and doesn't even work at the developer." Yowch. Soap operas aren't this good.[Via LockoutGaming]
