What we're watching and why: At first I didn't like this film, but then the third or fourth time I watched  it something magnetic drew me in. I'm referring to "Shawshank Redemption," which is showing in high definition tonight. I've only watched it on TV and DVD, so I imagine some of the scenes, especially the last one on the beach, are beautiful. And HD probably makes the prison look worse than I had imagined. You can catch the movie at 8 p.m. and 12:15 a.m. on HDNet Movies. Here are some other HDTV programs showing on selected networks today:CBS: CSI (9 p.m.), Without a Trace (10 p.m.)NBC: Joey (8 p.m.), Will & Grace (8:30 p.m.), ER (10 p.m.), The Tonight Show (11:35 p.m.)Fox: The O.C. (9 p.m.)WB: Smallville (8  p.m.), Everwood (9 p.m.)ESPN-HD: SportsCenter (11 p.m.)

What we're watching and why: Two baseball games in HD on the same day? Can it be so?  Happily, it is, if you get both ESPN-HD and ESPN 2-HD. The New York Yankees, which are 3.5 games back from the AL East leader Boston, take on the Cleveland Indians, which are 14 games back from the Chicago White Sox in the AL Central division. The game starts at 7 p.m. on ESPN-HD. Later, at 10 p.m. on ESPN 2-HD, the Baltimore Orioles, which are 9.5 games back in the AL East, play the L.A. Angels, which lead the AL West with a 61-45 record. Here are some other HDTV programs showing on selected networks today:ABC: Lost (10 p.m.)CBS: King of Queens (9:30 p.m.), CSI: NY (10 p.m.)NBC: Law & Order (9 and 10 p.m.), The Tonight Show (11:35 p.m.)Fox: The Inside (9 p.m.)UPN: Veronica Mars (9 p.m.)WB: One Tree Hill (8 p.m.), Smallville (9  p.m.)ESPN-HD: NFL Live (4 p.m.), MLB: NYY at Cleveland (7 p.m.), Baseball Tonight (10 p.m.), SportsCenter (11 p.m.)ESPN 2-HD: MLB: Orioles at Angels (10 p.m.)

What we're watching and why: When I was getting ready to make my first trip to Europe in 1996, my friend and traveling companion drilled into my mind: Rick Steves, Rick Steves. He was the international travel guru, especially for bargain trips, I was told. So I held to the advice of both my friend and Steves and enjoyed a nice trip throughout Europe. Now you can see tonight's premiere of Rick traveling in "Belgium: Bruges and Brussels" in high def. Rick Steves' Europe is on HDNet at 8:30 and 11:30 p.m.Here are the HDTV programs showing on some selected networks today:ABC: My Wife and Kids (8 p.m.), Rodney (8:30 p.m.)CBS: NCIS (8 p.m.)NBC: Law & Order: Special Victims Unit (10 p.m.), The Tonight Show (11:35 p.m.)Fox: House (9 p.m.)WB: Gilmore Girls (8 and 9 p.m.)ESPN-HD: NFL Live (4 p.m.), Tilt (10 p.m.), SportsCenter (11 p.m.)

What we're watching and why: There's nothing I can think of more beautiful on HDTV than beaches and shorelines. In "America's Best Beaches 2005," Discovery-HD tonight uses experts from Conde Nast, USA Today and Fodor's to pick the best family beach, best romantic beach and the best all around beach, among others. Our cousin blogs, Luxist and Gadling, recently wrote about the nation's best beaches. Both were reporting on the coastal scientist Dr. Beach's annual list, which this year featured Fort De Soto Park-North Beach in St Petersburg, Fla., at the top. You'll have to watch the Discovery-HD show to find out which beach they pick. You can catch it at 8 and 11 p.m.Here are other HDTV programs showing on some selected networks today. All times are Eastern:ABC: The Sixth Sense (8 p.m.)CBS: King of Queens (8 p.m.), Everybody Loves Raymond (8:30 p.m.), Two and a Half Men (9 p.m.), CSI: Miami (10 p.m.)NBC: Las Vegas (9 p.m.), Medium (10 p.m.)UPN: One on One (8 p.m.), All of Us (8:30 p.m.), Girlfriends (9 p.m.)WB: Summerland (9 p.m.)ESPN-HD: NFL Live (4 p.m.), Baseball Tonight (7:30 p.m.), MLB: Marlins at Cardinals (8 p.m.), SportsCenter (11 p.m.)

  • 34 reasons to watch HDTV

We counted 34 "fly-away" hairs on Marg Helgenberger's head that you would never see on an analog set. Trust us, we checked by snapping this picture from CSI last night on CBS in 1080i. We had to go back to our PVR on the non-digital set and guess what? No fly-aways on Marg!Let us know if you're on the fence for an HDTV purchase; maybe we'll snap an occasional pic like this so you can see what you're missing! Yes, before you even ask: we have way too much time on our hands.

Here are the HDTV programs showing on some selected networks today, along with "what we're watching and why." All times are Eastern:ABC: 8 Simple Rules (8 p.m.), Hope & Faith (8:30 p.m.), Less Than Perfect (9:30 p.m.)CBS: JAG (9 p.m.), Numbers (10 p.m.)NBC: Cross Jordan (10 p.m.),  The Tonight Show with Jay Leno (11:35 p.m.)Fox: Arrested Development (8, 8:30, 9, 9:30 p.m.)WB: What I Like About You (8 p.m.), Reba (9 p.m.)ESPN-HD: Baseball Tonight (9:30 p.m.), SportsCenter (11 p.m.)What we're watching and why: This should be What we're not watching. How can 8 Simple Rules, a sitcom we all knew was destined for cancellation after its star died, be shown in HDTV when the Indy 500 was not? Shame, shame.

Here are the HDTV programs showing on some selected networks today, along with "what we're watching and why." All times are Eastern Time:ABC and UPN: No HD programming. (Shame on you both!)CBS: CSI: Crime Scene Investigation (9 PM), Without a Trace (10 PM)NBC: Joey (8 PM), Will & Grace (8:30 PM), ER (10 PM), The Tonight Show with Jay Leno (11:30 PM)Fox: The O.C. (9 PM)WB: Smallville (8 PM), Everwood (10 PM)What we're watching and why: "The Day After Tomorrow" on HBO-HD at 8:30 PM. Hey, we've been known to watch marginal programs simply because they're in HD, so here's another example. This 2004 box-office bummer has great special effects that, when seen in HD, might offset the so-so plot. It doesn't hurt that the movie was directed by Roland Emmerich of "Independence Day" fame.

We're thinking of mixing this daily post up a bit and we're hoping you can help with some feedback. Instead of just providing a list of what programs are available in HD, we'll try to add a little more value with a recommended or must see pick. Maybe this becomes a "What we're watching today" post, who knows? Let us know your thoughts. In the meantime, lets get you a list of what's available for your HD-set today, along with the embellishment of our pick for today. If you want to recommend a show, the door is open so don't be shy! Just tell us what you'll be watching, when it's on, and why you'll be watching.
