Twitter adds chronological timeline button to its Android app
You no longer need an iOS device to easily see your Twitter feed the right way. Twitter is rolling out its chronological timeline button on Android, giving you a quick way to switch between the latest tweets and the social network's algorithm-sorted top tweets. This isn't a once-and-you're-done switch, but it will make sure you can follow along with an awards show or sports extravaganza rather than wading through hours-old posts.
Twitter's chronological timeline button is here to stay
Nearly two months ago, Twitter began testing a feature that made it easier for users to see the latest tweets on their feed first, rather than the ones pushed by the company's algorithm. It's a toggle dressed as a sparkle icon that lives above the home timeline, which keeps you from having to go deep into your Twitter settings to get that purely chronological view. Certain iOS users have had access to this since October, but today Twitter is making the change permanent and rolling it out to everyone on Apple's platform. Twitter's Android app as well as its website are getting the new magic button, too, but that won't be coming until after the holidays.
Instagram explains how it pieces together the feed we love to hate
Instagram sat down with some reporters today to explain its algorithm and dispel some myths that persist about its app, TechCrunch reports. It turns out that the three factors that largely determine how your feed is organized include your interests based on past behavior, how recently a post was shared and how often you've interacted with or been tagged with the person posting the content. Other factors that influence your feed's rankings include how often you visit Instagram, how long you're there and how many people you follow.
Vine update lets you reorder an account's videos
While Twitter is firmly behind keeping things in chronological order, Vine announced that users could reorder the videos of their favorite accounts from newest to oldest, oldest to newest and most importantly by the account's most popular videos. You can also hide revines while perusing the account. The updated app is available for iOS and Android right now while the actual feature is still rolling out.
