  • The Daily Grind: Did you get the Moria Collector's Edition?

While Turbine has already offered online account upgrade options for those with Lord of the Rings Online, some of us just can't resist a well put together Collector's Edition box when it comes to our favorite games. In grand fashion, Turbine has certainly rolled out a sweet box set for Mines of Moria. In the Moria CE, you're treated to goodies like a large (22" square) cloth map of Moria, a replica of the One Ring with a pouch, lots of art and music, a starter's guide, 3 in-game item tokens and a special badge for the forums. Add to that the pre-order bonus that nets you a Moria cloak, the "Moria Expeditionary" in-game title, and a return of the highly-praised $199 lifetime pricing, plus still more - and you can see why we'd be oohing and aahing over the Mines of Moria Collector's Edition pre-order. This morning we thought we'd ask our Lord of the Rings Online fans - did you heed the call of the Collector's Edition and pick one up? If not, did you opt for a pre-ordered copy, or did you take the online account upgrade option to save yourself from having yet another game box in your house? Maybe you purchased the Collector's Edition, but went ahead and pre-downloaded everything anyway just so you could jump in Moria that much sooner. We know we can't be the only ones who geek out on a good Collector's Edition, so let us know.

It can't have escaped your notice that the release of Wrath of the Lich King is upon us, and if it has let me be among the first to welcome you to Planet Earth. Here at Massively, we have a metric tonne of Wrath-related content lined up for you, starting with a look inside the Collector's Edition box. We've spoken about the CE before, but this is the first chance we've had a chance to lay hands on it. I won't go into the details of how we got our grubby mitts on it early, but it may involve some obscene and blasphemous rituals conducted in honour of the Great Old Ones. Or a pre-order, take your pick. Read through our Unboxing the Wrath of the Lich King Collector's Edition Gallery, enjoy a good look at the contents. We'll even peek inside the Art book, the two March of the Legion TCG starter decks and the Instruction Manual if you're lucky. Take the Tour >> %Gallery-36550%

  • GameStop Collector's Edition preorders labeled as backordered

    by

    11.12.2008

WoW players that preordered their copies of Wrath of the Lich King through GameStop have been having a bit of a scare since late last night sometime. Preorders have started to display as Backordered on order histories and order trackers. Our advice? Don't panic. Until your item specifically ships, it's not unusual for the Item Status field to reflect the status of the item in general and not your copy in particular. The Backordered status refers to their stock as a whole, meaning overall they've hit the Out of Stock point. The copy you ordered may be just fine and dandy and you'll probably see your Status flip to Pending or Shipped at some point throughout the day. If you ordered your copy early, you are most likely completely safe and fine. If you ordered it very very late, it's a little more likely that your personal order will be affected, but chances are still very good that you'll turn out okay. It's a weird system. When that Backordered label crops up, it's hard to tell whether your copy is actually going to arrive at your doorstep or not. It's not a completely unusual occurrance, it happens now and then with really big releases. It's just as confusing each and every time. Just relax, keep an eye on it, and don't worry too much until it still says Backordered tomorrow morning and your copy hasn't shown up on your doorstep. Then you might have a problem.

Can't wait to get your hands on the Wrath Collector's Edition box to see what shiny shiny lies within? We've all seen the list of what's included, but now you can watch it for yourselves. Somehow reader Havok of Norway got his hands on the box early and shot a 2 minute video opening it and exploring each element inside. Start about 30 seconds in to avoid some shaky camera set up.And check back with WoW Insider. We are giving away more Wrath CE boxes as part of our Countdown to Wrath Giveaway!EDIT: Mysteriously, the video has been taken down off YouTube by the user. I guess we'll have to wait until Thursday to get a look at the CE.

In less than a week, at 12:01 AM on 11/13/08, Wrath of the Lich King will be available and (hopefully) live on the servers. If you, like many of us, are planning to get the expansion immediately, how are you going to get it? After all, there are so many options: Pre-Order for in-store pickup: You can pre-order your copy and then pick it up when it is available. This works great if you are going to a Midnight Launch or you just want to make sure it is available when you are able to get to the store. Pre-Order for delivery: You can pre-order your copy to be delivered to your door. Amazon even gives an option to have it delivered before midnight. Though if you want the Collector's Edition, you have to catch Amazon during one of the brief windows it is available. More options are after the break.

  • Win a WotLK CE from WoW Macros

Macros are awesome. I may not use them all that extensively, but the ones I have, I love. And I'm always on the lookout for more good macros to simplify my action bars. WoW Macros, a site that's been around quite a long time and has the laudable mission of listing handy macros for all classes, has just undergone a complete redesign, and they're having a contest to celebrate, with some pretty sweet Wrath-related prizes. Up for grabs are: One Wrath of the Lich King collector's edition Two regular copies of WotLK Three 60-day time cards As well as ten copies of Derek's WotLK Guide, a normally-paid Wrath leveling guide. If you want my opinion, though, just go for Jame's guides; they're free and very high-quality. Jame's guides will be released in the week ahead on WoW Pro.At any rate, there are some very cool prizes here. And what do you have to do to participate? Just head on over to the WoW Macros site and submit a new macro, or suggest an improvement to one that's already on the site (be sure to use a valid email). Every valid submission gives you a "ticket" to the contest, and shortly after midnight on November 12, the day before Wrath, sixteen winners will be drawn randomly and emailed. You can't win more than one prize, but submitting more macros does give you a greater chance to win something. Now get coding -- that collector's edition isn't going to win itself.

  • Ask A Beta Tester: Questions I wish we'd been asked

    by

    11.03.2008

Here at WoW Insider sometimes we go a little nuts around big news events due to sleep deprivation or sensory overload in conjunction with large hits of caffeine. When that happens while we are writing "Ask A Beta Tester," occasionally we ask ourselves questions ("Why am I not in bed?") that we later realize might actually be useful. As Wrath of the Lich King's release date creeps up and the beta becomes more and more deserted (seriously: Dalaran is a ghost town these days, not that my computer's wheezing hardware doesn't appreciate it), I find myself turning to a few topics that readers generally never asked about, but wound up being game-defining experiences in the beta. By necessity, most of them are a little more general -- overall impressions, things you wouldn't necessarily think to ask about unless you were a fresh arrival in Northrend and noticed the differences -- but I've included a few specific things that I hope people will find interesting. Unlike --Why are you not in bed? What makes you think I'm not?

  • The Daily Grind: Do you buy Collector's Editions?

    by
    Samuel Axon

    10.31.2008

They're expensive and they're usually mostly useless, but they sure are popular anyway! Collector's Editions are a given for any major game release these days, and MMOs are no exception -- Age of Conan and Warhammer Online both had 'em, and even expansion packs get 'em in Wrath of the Lich King's case.Sometimes they just come with fancy boxes and art work or soundtrack CDs, while other times they come with in-game bonuses like free mounts. Sometimes they even let you play the game earlier. But they're awfully pricey -- what do you think, are they worth it? Have you bought Collector's Editions before, or do you plan to? Or are you perfectly happy forgoing the frills and just getting the basic box?

  • Fable II Collector's Edition may have missing DLC code

    10.21.2008

After being stripped down of its heftier extras the Fable II Collector's Edition may have, unintentionally, misplaced one of its replacement bonuses. According to tipsters at Joystiq, some Fable II Collector's Editions sold at GameStop are missing the redeem code for the special in-game downloadable content offered exclusively with the package.A GameStop source told Joystiq that a company wide email notes that cases bearing an orange "48 hours of LIVE"' sticker include the DLC code, but copies without the sticker do not.Allegedly customers are being directed by GameStop to the Xbox Support phone line (1-800-4MYXBOX) if their Collector's Edition does not include the code -- which Joystiq confirmed with a phone call to Xbox Support as the current course of action for the situation. The anticipated role-playing game from Lionhead Studios releases for the Xbox 360 today.

Curse you, "supply chain issues!" You can blame them for the undignified nerfing of the Fable 2 Limited Collector's Edition, which will now ship sans Fate Cards, adorable Hobbe figure and splendid, premium box. Thankfully, the reduction also affects the package's price, which will go down by $10 to $69.99 (£39.99 for our UK chums). It will still include a "making-of" DVD and the bonus in-game dungeon, weapon and Spartan armor. To make up for the loss, Lionhead Studios has offered a downloadable Fable soundtrack. To obtain the tunes, visit sumthingdigital as of October 6th and enter "FableCollection" as a promotion code.

  • Wrath of the Lich King will ship on DVD only

    09.27.2008

One of the most annoying things about installing World of Warcraft is that chances are your installer discs are in CD format, hence it's "discs" instead of "disc." That means you do a lot of swapping CDs out while installing the game. Okay, so that's obviously not a deal breaker, but it's still annoying. We have good news: both the Collector's and regular editions of the Wrath of the Lich King expansion will ship on DVD. Hurray! We already knew this about the Collector's Edition, but that the regular edition will too is good news. Here's the bad news: they'll only ship on DVD. So if you're got a really, really old computer (and WoW will run on really, really old computers so you might), you'll be scat outta luck. That is, until a digital download version comes out. Inevitably it will, of course, but it probably won't be on day one. No Death Knight for you!Thankfully, this is not 1997, so we imagine that only a very tiny minority of WoW players will be bothered. And if you are affected, go buy a DVD drive for 20 bucks, you cheapskate! We thought we'd give you the heads up just in case.

You might need to fill that flask, er, "canteen" with more than just Kool-Aid if you plan to make it through the first few weeks of Call of Duty 5 Call of Duty: World At War boot camp. You see, you bought the "Limited Collector's Edition," which includes, in addition to a storage tin (guaranteed to fit other Treyarch games!) and the aforementioned sipping container, the infamous "Day One Advantage." As if spotting the guy with the ridiculously over-powered machine gun won't be easy enough, you'll also be pinned with a "uniquely colored clan tag" identifying your "VIP-status" in online multiplayer. In other words: Everybody kill that guy! Yeah, you.

Quick. Grab your wallet, remove a crisp $100 bill and light it on fire. Actually, don't. But if you were reaching for that Benjamin, this edition of Mirror's Edge might be for you. Deciding that the $150 edition of Dead Space wasn't enough for the holiday, EA has signed on with bag maker Timbuk2 to offer and exclusive Mirror's Edge branded messenger bag with the game for a collective total of $130. Sure, it's much nicer than GameStop's pre-order bag but do you really need that $130 strapped to your sholder when so many great games are hitting by years end? Well, if you do need it we guess it could be worse ... at least it isn't priced at Timbuk200 dollars! Amirite?

  • Gamestop has stopped online WotLK Collector's Edition pre-orders

Until recently, Gamestop was offering pre-orders of the upcoming World of Warcraft expansion, Wrath of the Lich King, the Collector's Edition. At this point, you can still pre-order, but you'll have to drop in at one of their locations, because according to their website, they are "currently not available online." Being Canadian, I'm an awfully sad panda right now. I could not decide if I wanted to pay the extra $20, plus customs, and have to wait an extra week at least in order to get my hands on one, and now I'm regretting not putting in the order. At least it would have been a back-up I could have canceled later!I stopped into my local EB Games last night and was told that they do not know if, when, or how many copies they'll be getting. Of course, if you're willing to shell out approximately $300 for a copy, Amazon has you covered. Anyone else have any leads?

Right when we talk two of our friends into playing World of Warcraft with us again, the same two that talked us into playing in the first place, I miss out on all the fun. Almost a day without power, and the internet has, as of earlier today, finally gotten back up to par. At least I have the weekend to look forward to!I hope I'm not the only person looking forward to my very own Frosty. I missed out on all the other fun vanity pets, but I finally (might) get a cute little Frost Wyrm, oh and the Collector's Edition's other extras as well. I just don't think I'll be cuddling it any time soon, he looks a little bony.See you next week! %Gallery-22361% Barrens Chat is a weekly comic installment created on caffeine and pixy sticks.
