It's another week of catch-up this week, as we pull out the older submissions we didn't have the opportunity to feature in 2009. First up: digital art of Illidan Stormrage, a school project from l1onh3art of DeviantArt. We were completely taken in by the realism -- we thought it was a sculpture at first, too -- but the work is actually done with a digital tool called ZBrush. We can safely say that while this may not be an actual bust, it's definitely no "bust" when it comes to creativity!

Fan-made Railway Rifle from Fallout 3 hits eBay
YouTube user ProfessorGigaton has a pair of videos showing off his latest diabolical creation: a life-size model of Fallout 3's Railway Rifle. If you're inclined to take on the project yourself, one of the videos features a full tutorial to help you create your very own non-working replica. Lazy, like us? The supposed professor -- we're waiting on his school transcripts -- is also selling the model featured in the videos on eBay. The starting bid is $45, and it's sure to look great with your Fallout 3-inspired cosplay ... and will definitely come in handy in the post-apocalyptic world of 2012. MMOrigins: The play's the thing
When it comes to my roots in MMOs, I actually have to start fairly early on with my general introduction to tech geekery. Growing up in my house was a somewhat strange affair. You see, back when computers used to take up entire rooms and ran on giant reels of tape -- later plastic key cards and paper tapes -- my father was working with them. Being part of our household meant one was essentially living with a highly technical mind that worked on and loved things like supercomputers. I experienced ideas and machines that many in the world hadn't, save in movies or on TV. It also meant that there were some pretty strange technical odds and ends floating around our home.
You're bound to look sharp in these Earthbound duds
We may raise our snobby noses as we pass by cosplayers at conventions, but once a year it becomes socially acceptable for us to embrace our inner theater student and don a disguise. Being people who spend quite a bit of time writing about or playing video games, we tend to err on the side of nerdery when it comes to Halloween outfits (shocking, we know). The folks at Fangamer coax this urge all the more when they release a full outfit of Earthbound's hero, Ness, on their site. Considering the striped "Shirtness," the accompanying "Earth Bounder" (the yo-yo) and the guarantee that it'll arrive before Halloween, the $54.99 asking price seems almost acceptable. Plants vs. Zombies to march in NYC Halloween parade
This is a just a warning to any zombies considering joining the New York City Halloween parade. Pictured above are some of the plants that PopCap will be sending to march in said parade. As you -- the zombies -- well know, these plants will most certainly assure your demise. Well, except the wall-nuts. They'll pretty much just stand there and let you eat them, but we love 'em anyway. They're just so damned cute. Dumb, but cute.
World of WarCrafts: Scarlet Crusade stalks Dragon*Con

Show us how you express yourself; contact our tips line (attention: World of WarCrafts) with your not-for-profit, WoW-inspired creations.There may be dragons at BlizzCon, but the Scarlet Crusade itself was spotted making their mark at this year's Dragon*Con. An enterprising group of players loosely allied with the guild Suncrown from The Venture Co-H made it into CNN's video coverage of Dragon*Con, so colorful and detailed were their costumes. "We had Mograine, Whitemane and two Scarlet Marksmen with us," writes Samanthiel of The Silvermoon Academy (Wyrmrest Accord-H). The Scarlet Crusade cosplay crew was made up of friends split up between Houston, Texas, and New Orleans, La., who play WoW together in order to keep in touch. "We had a really great time, but the footwear killed us," Samanthiel says. "Those heels and boots were massacre on our feet, so we only wore the costume for Saturday morning of the con and sometime into the afternoon." While none of the group are professional costumers, they did reap the benefit of Vexander's (Scarlet Commander Mograine) years of experience costuming, armorcrafting and leatherworking for Society of Creative Anachronism (SCA) events. We suspect Theodorick of Gurubashi-US was being facetious when he described his 2009 BlizzCon cosplay journey thusly, but his comment went deeper than mere humor. What we found beneath the one-liner showed more heart than even Theodorick suspected was within: hard work, passion, persistence, humor, long hours ... You name it, cosplayers pour their hearts into their creations. While Theodorick – known at BlizzCon 2009 as Sartharion -- wasn't among the finalists at this year's contest, his enthusiasm certainly can't be beat. We visited with Theodorick to learn what went into his BlizzCon creation. Dragon*Con 2009 in pictures
Oh, Dragon*Con, I missed you before I even left. Though I'm not entirely certain if you can really enjoy the MMO track's annual World of Warcraft party -- which included Gnome punting and Horde vs. Alliance dodgeball -- vicariously, I tried to catch the experience in photographic form nevertheless. (Note: if you want to really experience the meaning of the "war" in Warcraft, you need to do so in a room filled with hundreds of WoW fans cheering for their faction of choice.) Of course, Dragon*Con is more than parties (after all, some of the parties had Tesla coils), there was some great MMO programming and we had a chance to talk addons with the infamous ckknight. With twelve long months to wait until Dragon*Con 2010, we'll all have to live on memories until then. Jack Black cosplays as Eddie Riggs at VMAs
Okay, sure, he may have looked ridiculous dressed up as Eddie Riggs at last night's MTV video Music Awards, what with that awful wig and foam arms that would have been laughed off the set of Popeye. And yeah, we know he's got a stake in the project's success, but you have to love Jack Black's commitment to Brütal Legend, one that we wish all big-name celebrities could share when they appear in games of their own. Seriously though, Jack, let's have a talk about that wig.
Dragon*Con 2009: A look back at the mayhem
Some of us go for the excellent panels featuring stars like William Shatner, Leonard Nimoy, Terry Gilliam, Adam Savage, and so many more. Others of us go for the fun events like concerts by Arc Attack, Faith & The Muse, or the kilt-blowing by Jennie Breeden. Amongst all the comic, fantasy, sci-fi, and other sundry forms of nerditry, there is a steadily growing MMO and video game presence at Dragon*Con. For the last three years, Massively and our sister site WoW.com have been on the ground helping grow this East coast gaming presence either as panelists or staff. Some of the highlights for this year included: Guiness World Record set for 905 people doing Michael Jackson's "Thriller" dance at the same time. (You haven't lived until you've seen Alien do Thriller, though there's lots of footage.) 2600+ units of blood donated to the Dragon*Con blood drive, with 250+ people being tied to the Alliance vs. Horde World of Warcraft competition we held as part of the D*C MMO track. (Horde won, but just barely.) 40+ different fan tracks, with 50 panels worth of content for MMOs alone! $25,000 raised for charity! So if you missed the fun, here's a gallery of some of the random images from D*C this year. Dragon*Con 2009: Costumes, the parade and more!
Didn't get a chance to check out the costumes at Dragon*Con this year? No problem! We spent the last weekend grabbing literally hours of video footage to stuff into a small, digestible 10-minute chunk for our readers. PAX 2009: Cosplaying in Seattle
In the aftermath of PAX this year, we almost forgot to post one of our favorite event pastimes: a cosplay gallery. We've been too busy slapping on facemasks and hazmat suits to quell the nerd flu outbreaks. There weren't nearly as many people dressed up as last year, but we're hoping that Tycho and Gabe add a full-on costume contest to the mix next year for PAX East or West. Did you see that Big Daddy costume we posted about? Well, that guy wasn't at PAX ... but we wish he would have been. Still, there were some impressive efforts up in Seattle this year, and you can take a gander at them in the gallery below. And yes, we've included a photo of War's horse Ruin from Darksiders, because he was a mechanical bull who just happened to be wearing a giant, killer horse skin. Cheater. How to build a Big Daddy costume, in many complicated steps
Eager to spend a few hundred hours toiling away on some heavy clothes that'll probably hurt like crazy when you wear them, and will definitely make you look like a grotesque monster? Yeah, okay, we are too. This BioShock Big Daddy costume built by master game prop fabricator Harrison Krix is just that great. Krix thoughtfully provided step-by-step instructions so you can attempt to fabricate your own Big Daddy. It's mostly made from an insulation-foam and cardboard skeleton, covered with expanding foam, with one of those domes from a ceiling-mounted security camera for the head and custom-molded resin details. And then there's ... the articulated cardboard-and-PVC animatronic hand. Okay, maybe the fact that he's shown how he did this doesn't necessarily mean we can do it. [Via Sidequesting; Thanks, Dali!]
BlizzCon 2009: Costumes, pt II
Elizabeth gave you heads up during the BlizzCon 2009 weekend that your intrepid WoW.com staff was keeping an eye on the amazing costumes on your behalf. We were even able to give you a huge gallery of the costume contest taking place, with great pictures as the cosplayers strutted their stuff on stage. Then, we were able to bring you the 2009 costume contest video to make sure you had a good idea of how the costumes looked in live action.We've now updated our costume gallery with tons of extra pictures, with many of them focused on making sure you get to see the amazing detailing these cosplayers put into their outfits. From gloves to weapons, the cosplayers really raised the bar on how to do a "real life" interpretation of in-game gear. Cosplay record attempt fails at GamesCom, Guinness believes TGS attempt could 'smash' record
If we had a "sad panda" costume, we'd put it on right now for this post. The GamesCom attempt to break the Guinness world record for "The Largest Gathering of Games Characters" failed this weekend -- but it wasn't an "epic fail." Joystiq spoke with Gaz Deaves, Guinness' video games records manager, who told us 311 cosplayers were present, which was 65 short of the record set at London MCM Expo on May 23 of this year. Deaves explained that once the line was cleared, organizers didn't think it would be fair to keep the folks waiting while they went looking for more people on the show floor -- a good thing, considering the heat already caused our pity meter to go into overdrive for the folks hotboxing inside the Tetris blocks and full Yoshi costumes. The organizer's eleventh-hour change of venue from the South Hall entrance to a random location between two halls in the enormous complex probably didn't help costumed revelers attend the event either. The next attempt to break the record will likely be London Games Festival or MCM Expo, which have applied the last two years, successfully breaking the record on both occasions. Deaves tells us, "However, the big competitor who has yet to apply is TGS. I expect Tokyo could smash this record; however, until they've been officially counted they can't claim it." Cosplayer gathering at GamesCom attempts to break Guinness record
Over 400 cosplayers are expected to gather and break the Guinness record for "The Largest Gathering of Games Characters" today at GamesCom. We were looking forward to telling you if they broke the MCM London record of 376 characters ... but we forgot one little detail: Um, all those people need to be officially counted and that seems to take a really long time.With a couple Guinness representatives on hand, each cosplayer has to write down the name of their character and respective game. Following that, a photo gets taken and then they get to bake in the summer sun -- waiting for everyone else to be counted. We felt really bad for the Tetris pieces! If there's one thing we can't get enough of, it's World of Warcraft fans in elaborate, just-stepped-out-of-your-computer-screen costumes. (And even though this year's winner took her inspiration from Diablo 3, we can't hold it against her.) And BlizzCon certainly has its fair share of cosplay. But we're not going to waste your time with a bunch of words when there are so many pictures to show off -- enjoy our costume contest gallery, the next best thing to being there yourself.
