With the jam-packed costume contest taking place at BlizzCon in the evening, people spent all of yesterday parading around in their ginormous costumes in preparation. That's some dedication right there! Check out our massive gallery just below, and be sure to watch a video of the contest winners right after the break. The rogue above was one of the finalists, but she was ultimately robbed (robbed, we say!) of the top prize.Stay tuned for more images -- BlizzCon ain't over yet!%Gallery-70721%

BlizzCon approaches! Preparing for BlizzCon is your regular source for tips on how best to prepare for Blizzard's gaming extravaganza. These helpful hints are particularly suited for convention rookies. But if you are a con veteran, we'd love to hear your advice and wisdom in the comments as well. Many people will be wearing costumes to BlizzCon. If you are one of them, there are a few things you should know: If you want to enter the contest, you should enter online by August 17, 2009. Blizzard will accept entries at the con, but only if enough people didn't pre-register. They have changed the costume rules a bit. You need to be wearing or holding any props you have. If you are bringing your costume for the competition, but not wearing it all day, see an Information Kiosk. There will be no general storage options available. More costume tips are after the break.

  • Champions Online dev chat answers questions from the fans

The superhero MMO Champions Online is slated for a launch very soon, right around the corner in September. Cryptic Studios has continued to hold dev chats leading up to the game's release, which can be a good source of info about Champions Online, particularly if you haven't had a chance to check out the game's beta tests. The latest dev chat let the Champions fan base pose questions to the developers, including Lead Designer Randy Mosiondz and Reward Systems Designer Cormac Russell, among other devs working on the game. The dev chat addressed a range of questions and concerns, such as what Champions Online will bring to MMORPGs and the superhero game genre that we don't already have. The title's creators also explained the extent of Champions Online's crafting system, including how players will be able to craft Techniques, essentially items that impart abilities. There's also plenty more about unlockable costumes and how the game is designed to prevent players from creating (overly) godlike custom Power Frameworks. You can check out what the Cryptic devs have to say about Champions Online over on the game's official forums.

What does the future of Marvel video games hold? According to the aptly titled "The Next Generation of Marvel Video Games" panel at San Diego Comic Con, the future holds ... LittleBigPlanet costumes! Kotaku nabbed pictures of concept art for three different superheroic costumes that were previewed: Captain America, who is pictured above, and Wolverine and Iron Man, who can be viewed after the jump.Marvel was non-committal about when the costume pack would be released, or even whether these three heroes would be the ones that would receive the DLC treatment. We've contacted Media Molecule to try and discern some concrete details. Personally, we've got our stuffed burlap fingers crossed for an appearance by Howard the Duck.

During Preview Night at Comic-Con, we spotted two of the best video game costumes so far: Half-Life's Gordon Freeman, complete with Gravity Gun, and Ezio from Assassin's Creed 2. For a minute we thought we'd miraculously spotted former Joystiq blogger (and amateur Gordon Freeman lookalike) Ross Miller, and were set to pounce on him, but thankfully we noticed at the last minute and averted disaster. Click Gordon for a larger version, which includes his employee ID, and head beyond the break for Ezio. There's more cosplay going on here than at a LARP convention, and we'll be bringing you a lot more. Click through for Ezio and his blades, and stay tuned. %Gallery-68588%

  • Blizzard puts a few limits on the costume contest

This is interesting -- the costumes at BlizzCon have gotten more and more complicated every year, as people try to one-up each other by bringing the wackiest and biggest costumes to wear, both for the official contest and around the show floor (you can see some of last year's appearances below). The big winner last year was this turtle mount, complete with wheels and a moving head, and so we wonder: what'll happen this year? Not so fast, says Blizzard. When a player asks just how far costumers might go (a live mount?), Bashiok says that there are some tweaks to the rules this year: costumes can't go over 10' in any direction, include "liquids or messy substances," or be judged on items that can't be worn or held. That would seem to disqualify the turtle mount, from official judging anyway -- they want the contest to revolve around costumes, not vehicles.Which doesn't mean that we won't see some crazy costumes on the show floor (and obviously you'll see them here on the site, even if you're not in Anaheim). But the contest itself might be a little more low key than last year -- seems like the Sea Turtle/ATV was enough to make Blizzard dial it back a notch.%Gallery-34205%

Blizzard EU has a pretty sweet offer to you European players out there: If you like cosplay (and you're good at it) you could win a chance to go to BlizzCon for free. The official contest page states, "All you have to do is create a costume inspired by one of our game universes, pose in it, snap a photo, and send it to us!"Of course, certain rules apply, contests are never that simple, as I'm sure you've noticed with some of the contests right here on WoW Insider. The contest will begin on May 20th, 2009. It will end on June 22nd, 2009. Submissions sent early (or late) will be discarded. Entries are also limited to individuals 18 or older residing in the following countries: France Belgium United Kingdom Luxembourg Germany Austria Sweden Finland Denmark Norway Ireland Spain Check out the official contest page for the rules in their entirety and the full range of prizes, including the free trip to BlizzCon as well as products from SteelSeries, UpperDeck and Panini.%Gallery-34205%

The face tab, like the body tab, has more than just sliders. The sliders for your face are easily the most detailed, and do change quite a bit. Not that these sliders are useless, just that if you couldn't be bothered with them you really needn't worry about it beyond picking a mood.

  • Bionic hooves for the perfect BlizzCon costume

    04.29.2009

The craziest costume I've seen at BlizzCon so far was probably that rideable turtle we saw last year (you can check it out, along with all of the other wild costumes from Blizzard's big show, in the gallery below). But these little dohickies embedded in a Tauren or Draenei costume might actually take the cake. They're called "digitigrade leg extensions" (so named after digitigrades, or animals like horses that step on their toes), and were made by a sculptor in Seattle who's done work for Wizards of the Coast before. They are, as the video says, for "costumers, performers, and actors everywhere."No idea what the cost is (she offers the extensions on her website, but we're not sure if it's a rent/buy/commission type of thing), but come on: can you really wear that Tauren costume around BlizzCon now without having these to leave hoofprints in? We didn't think so. See you there.%Gallery-34252%Thanks, Dave S!

  • Killzone 2, Buzz and Heavenly Sword LBP DLC revealed

The observant among you may have noticed that Sony's LittleBigPlanet 2009 DLC roadmap has now finished and we're still clueless as to what's coming next. The PlayStation Blog has updated with some new costume images, as you can see above, including Sev from Killzone 2 (almost certainly due to arrive today, in time for the game's launch tomorrow), Kai from Heavenly Sword and Buzz from, uh, Buzz!. While unlikely, the low-res textures and low poly-count of the Buzz model have us thinking ... maybe, just maybe, this may be a model from the upcoming PSP version?

  • Rumor: Street Fighter costumes landing soon on LittleBigPlanet

Earlier this month, Capcom hinted at a "little" surprise they'd be dropping on the PSN during the holiday season, leading many fans to the conclusion that Street Fighter's iconic brawlers would soon be inhabiting LittleBigPlanet. RipTen recently spotted what may be the first images of the suggested costumes on Spanish PlayStation community site PSNow -- including adorable, Sackitized versions of Chun-Li, Guile, Zangief and Ryu.It's unclear where PSNow dug up the images, but they certainly look legitimate. However, you should take time to view the rumored costumes while you still can, as SCEE has asked a number of sites to take the images down. Make of that what you will -- we're fairly certain it has something to do with the indecent nature of Sack-Zangief's exposed Sack-nipples.[Via 1UP]

  • BioWare employees satirize SWTOR's ginormous lightsabers

You may have noticed that the lightsabers in Star Wars: The Old Republic are disproportionately large. A vocal minority of fans are crying bloody murder about this, and BioWare is not unaware of that fact. At a company Halloween party, it would appear that they made a self-deprecating joke of it, with at least one employee showing up with an outrageously huge lightsaber, then staging a recreation of the screenshot that raised all those eyebrows. The image was leaked to gaming blog Kotaku, and here it is. BioWare seems to believe it's good to have a sense of humor about yourself, and we agree!

  • It's-a Mario World: Curious Costumes

Costumes are an integral part of any proper Halloween celebration, and we didn't have it in our little video gaming hearts to exclude Dear Mario from today's internationally recognized festivities. This is because we are obsessively enamored with Him, yes, sometimes to the extent of unnecessarily capitalizing pronouns, but also because we are under a rigorous blogging contract by penalty of death. Thus, we come to your monitor on this spooky evening with a mind for Mario's unconventional garb. It isn't often that we see Mario dressed in anything other than his trademark overalls. Even in his more athletic role he seems to prefer his mainstay red and blue outfit, however constricting and warm it may be, topped with his all-too-familiar cap. So any time we see him decked out in a fancy suit or in powered up form, we do a double take. Today we have gone ahead and compiled some of these less usual costumes in a new gallery that will FRIGHTEN and AMAZE, probably. Get to it! It's-a Mario World is a weekly feature in which the ubiquity of Nintendo's flagship character is celebrated: We'll incessantly ruminate about mustache wax, debate the curious whereabouts of the princess and covet the luminous power stars strewn about the galaxy. Check back here every Friday to find out what strange and wonderful thing has got us tipping our caps.

Readers have already started sending in a few costumes for Halloween this year -- if you're dressing up as something from the World of Warcraft, don't forget to take a picture and send it through our tipline. Reader Taytayflann of Frostmane assembled this great Bloodfang costume from a Horde hoodie that he bought -- the shoulders, which took the longest to make, he says, are made out of shin pads, cardboard, wire, red and black cloth, and staples. They turned out really well, and even though it was probably tough putting them together, it was probably still easier and faster than traipsing around Blackwing Lair with 40 people trying to get the virtual set. There are only a few pictures in the gallery below, but we'll be adding in your entries from the tipline throughout the weekend (both of real-life and ingame costumes), so check back to see more. And don't forget to have a safe and happy Halloween tonight from all of us here at WoW Insider.%Gallery-35811%

  • WoW Moviewatch: Hallow's End Special

The Myndflame team is back with a just-in-time release for this year's Hallow's End. The Myndflame community collaborated on this machinima, and I think you can see the results of a team effort. Those folks are already known for their humor, and the Hallow's End Special isn't a let down. The basic setup is that it's Hallow's End, and everyone should have a good, scary costume. Thrall is having a bit of a challenge, and finds a book to help him on his way. (One minion tells us that his mom used to make him pretend to be scared of Thrall's costume.) I have to admit, my first thought was "Aww, poor Thrall." But, it turns out all right in the end. Like I said, Myndflame's already known pretty well for bringing the funny, and they didn't disappoint this time, either. I'm always amazed with how much emotion they get into the relatively static faces of WoW, and how their angles set up the humor of their work. Go and see it for yourself on Myndflame! Lastly, I'm fairly certain no actual kittens were harmed in the production of this movie. %Gallery-35793% Previously on Moviewatch...

Happy Halloween, everybody! The World Event happening today IRL is the basis of our favorite game's Hallow's End festivities. This is the day when we are officially allowed to knock on strangers' doors and hope their Innkeeper will give us some treats. This is also when we can dress up as, well... anything, really, and not have anybody look at us funny. This is actually a great opportunity to do a little bit of cosplay even if you're not really into that kind of thing. I mean, why not dress up as your favorite WoW character? In fact, some people thought that was such a great idea they decided to make Warcraft costumes for everybody. What do you have planned for this Halloween? Will you be dressing up as a Warlock in Tier 5? Or maybe an Orc with the Arcanite Ripper? If you do plan on dressing up as somebody -- or something -- from Warcraft, don't forget to send in your pictures! While some of you might still have some last minute Hallow's End Achievements to pursue, I hope you get it early today so you can go out for what usually is a fun-filled night in many places. This is one of the few times that I'd actually recommend not playing the game for a little while. I mean, RL tricky treats and flimsy masks have got to be on everyone's agenda, right? Ending the day not plastered on Dos Ogris might be an Achievement for some, while I certainly hope nobody gets Out With It outside the game today. Whatever you have planned for Halloween, we at WoW Insider hope you have a blast! %Gallery-32199%

Dressing up like something WoW-related for Halloween this year? Take a picture and send it to our tips line, because we'd love to see it! Whether you nabbed one of Blizzard's official costumes, worked a long time on a Tauren costume, or are just gluing some ears on and calling yourself a Night Elf, we'd love to take a look at what you're dressing up as, and we're sure our readers do, too. We'll collect all the pictures together and post them tomorrow, so we can check out what WoW fans are pretending to be this Halloween. And if you need some inspiration, here's all of our costume galleries from the past two BlizzCons and the results of last year's ingame contest. Sure, you probably can't beat that girl on the turtle (or can you?), but as the couple and their adorable baby Murloc above show (they're from Blizzard's official gallery from last year), even a little bit of costume goes a long way.%Gallery-9805%%Gallery-34205%%Gallery-5529%

  • Jared Carr hints at DC Universe Online costume creation

City of Heroes is deservedly famous for its costume creator, which allows for a phenomenal amount of variety in character appearance. Champions Online may take that a step further, with multiple textures available for the same item. Obviously, being able to make your character just the way you want them is a very big deal in hero games. But what about the most mysterious of the superhero MMOs, DC Universe Online?Art director Jared Carr has posted some early details to his blog. Jared explains that 'you can choose from a variety of body sizes, silhouettes and hairstyles', which isn't much of a surprise; however, DCUO will feature something neither CoX nor CO have, which is costume pieces limited by origin. 'If you are a tech-based character (like Cyborg) you will have different costume options than a magic based character (like Dr. Fate).' Jared also mentions that costumes can be altered over time if you wish, a feature CoH didn't have at launch and rapidly adopted.

Our homies at WoW Insider have discovered something wonderful: official World of Warcraft costumes for Halloween. Costumes Inc. are supplying the line, and there's a fine selection on offer. Season 2 Warrior helmets, Taurens, Orcs... and the weapons also make an appearance, though by the look of them, nobody's going to be doing anyone any damage. The fidelity to the original designs is excellent, and they're fully sanctioned by Blizzard, not just cheap knock-offs.There are even elf ears available, in both Night Elf and Blood Elf varieties! Just imagine how much fun could be had even after Halloween, with... um... live roleplaying. Yes. That is totally what we were thinking. Live roleplaying with friends. In woods. And stuff. With those long, pointy, slender elf ears. Elf... ears.Check out the complete gallery at WoW Insider!

Have you ever wanted to be a fearsome Orc? Maybe you wanted to wear your Season 2 Warrior helmet out on the street? Or maybe you figured it was time you need to dual-wield WoW's legendary weapons in real life, like some other folks? Gosh, maybe you just want pointy ears. Turns out, this Halloween is going to be your chance. Not only do you get to enjoy the real world holiday in game, but you get to enjoy the game in your real world holiday. Amythys of Mug'Thol tipped us off that Costumes Inc. has a series of licensed World of Warcraft costumes on sale. Licensed means they're official and for real -- note that the artwork on the ears is Blizzard's own art. Some of them are obviously tailored to be friendly to folks who don't know the game. The Season 2 Warrior helmet mask is titled as the "Wild Beastman Mask." And, oddly, there are three versions of the Arcanite Reaper -- one handed, standard, or long. Thunderfury makes an appearance, and it looks sweet. Of course, there's requisite elf ears available in both the Night and Blood varieties. Check it out in the gallery. %Gallery-32199%
