  • Serious Sam 3 to offer four-player splitscreen, seriously

Croteam, the folks behind the upcoming Serious Sam 3: BFE, must be seriously crazy about nostalgia, because they've decided to include a feature PC gaming hasn't seen in quite a while: Split-screen multiplayer. The developer has announced that the game will indeed allow for up to four players to play on the same screen, with the help of a keyboard and mouse and up to three gamepads. All of the versus and co-op modes will allow for splitscreen play, so just like old times, you'll be able to see what your friends are up to, helping or hampering them as you will. Check the screens below to see what this chaos looks like. %Gallery-130256%

  • Croteam looking for fan-written graffiti for Serious Sam 3

In a press release so tongue-in-cheek we're worried about their jawlines, Croteam has announced that its "Lead In-Game Wall Graffiti Artist" has decided to quit the company, leaving an opening for ... well, you. We're pretty sure Croteam is just joking, but the outcome is that it's having a contest for secret graffiti in Serious Sam 3: BFE, asking fans to submit some quick quips that will actually be posted in the game's environments, coded in Arabic and hieroglyphics. You need to submit lines, either through Facebook or Twitter, by July 29, and the team's favorite lines will actually show up in the game. We were going to suggest the old standby "Kilroy was here," but someone on the Facebook page already posted that one, so we're out. Good luck to everyone else who enters!

They say that dreams don't come true, and they're right, as our utter lack of bacon-generating jetpacks can attest. But the one place that rule doesn't apply is in the Joystiq comments section. Want proof? Check out the above comment, from our post about Serious Sam: Double D's brilliant Gun Stacker. Inspired by this comment, the hard-working staff of Mommy's Best Games went and ... you guessed it: PUT 4 CHAINSAWS ON IT. • Serious Sam: The Random Encounter is seriously an RPG

Yes, for its third of the Serious Sam Indie Series, Super Crate Box developer Vlambeer made an RPG. These new screens of Serious Sam: The Random Encounter reveal a game with both exploration and combat delivered in a 16-bit Final Fantasy-style. Of course, because it's a Serious Sam game, it's a Final Fantasy-style RPG populated by impossibly beefy dudes with big arms, bigger sidearms, and giant, grotesque robotic alien things.%Gallery-126830%

Sam isn't a man of change. You won't find him giving Yoga a whirl and you probably won't find him taking a leap on a VitaBoost passion-mango smoothie or whatever. And it shows in Serious Sam 3: BFE -- a case where minimal change actually ends up being a good thing. I was able to check out two different levels here at E3: the first level, a tutorial stage set in the streets of Cairo that eases you into the action, and a later, more traditional Serious Sam stage set amongst some ruins in a desert. %Gallery-125707%

It seems like every other week Serious Sam is on sale on Steam, and this weekend is no different. If you've yet to pounce on one of the preceding deals, then know you can get 75% off the game this weekend -- whether you want to snag the games piecemeal or all together in one bundle. Serious Sam HD: The First Encounter and Serious Sam HD: The Second Encounter are marked down to $3.74 and $4.99, respectively. The Serious Sam Gold Edition, which includes both HD remakes and the original PC games, is $9.99. If you're looking for just the HD remakes, then you can snag them both in a bundle for $7.49.

  • Serious Sam gets serious indie cred with new Indie Series

Normally, when a developer farms out one of its franchises to a smaller team, the groans are justified. But this time, the outsourcing is seriously appealing. Croteam and publisher Devolver Digital have announced the Serious Sam Indie Series, in which known indie developers remake Croteam's famous shooter in their own styles. The first three devs to take on this Serious task are Mommy's Best Games, Vlambeer, and Be-Rad Entertainment. Mommy's Best is doing what it does best, a "frantic side-scrolling shooter" for PC and consoles called Serious Sam: Double-D. Super Crate Box creator Vlambeer mashes up genres to create the turn-based RPG Serious Sam: The Random Encounter for unspecified platforms, and Lame Castle's Be-Rad Entertainment interprets the series as an auto-running game about guiding Headless Kamikazes out of the path of Sam, called Serious Sam: Kamikaze Attack! Platform specifics about Random Encounter and Kamikaze Attack have yet to be revealed, though Kamikaze Attack sounds like a candidate for a mobile release. If you're at PAX East this weekend, you can find out for yourself -- Double D and Kamikaze Attack will be playable at booth I-16. If there's one flaw to this plan, it's that these indie games sound way more interesting than the actual Serious Sam sequel they're intended to promote.%Gallery-118687%

Following the recent sneak peek of Serious Sam 3: BFE on the game's Facebook page, developer Croteam has fully parted the curtain standing between us and this prequel to The First Encounter set in ... bum fudge Egypt (or something like that). In a wildly amusing press release (after the break), the studio revealed some of the game's key features, including its lush Egyptian setting and 16-player "full campaign" co-op. (We wonder if it'll have 16 player split-screen support? We've always wanted to truly utilize our 256-inch monitor.) Serious Sam 3: BFE (the acronym won't be spelled out) is scheduled for release on PC and "game consoles" this summer. Check out the new screens below for more insight into its arcadey action! %Gallery-117773%

We've heard of flapjacks and snapbacks, and backpacks and scrapnaps (a nap after you've been scrapping, duh), but we've never heard of a "Scrapjack." It's a new enemy in Serious Sam 3: BFE, as revealed on the game's Facebook page, and it's the subject of the first released screenshot (above; high-res version in the gallery below). Perhaps the big clue -- which may lead us to the meaning of the game's "BFE" subtitle -- is a modern-looking sign with Arabic script. Update: Egypt it is! %Gallery-117715%

In a brief missive on the Croteam site, CEO Roman Ribaric confirmed a Summer 2011 launch for Serious Sam 3. No other details were offered, though Ribaric referred to the game as Serious Sam: BFE -- "Beyond First Encounter" or "Before First Encounter," perhaps? We've reached out to Croteam for clarification. Ribaric promises more details soon and we'll be sure to pass along any info as it's made known. Because that's how this relationship works.

No, seriously, every Serious Sam HD game is seriously 75 percent off all this weekend on Steam -- meaning Serious Sam HD: The First Encounter for $3.74, The Second Encounter for $4.99, and the recently released Gold Edition for $10 (which includes both remakes and the originals). This deal is unfortunately exclusive to PC Steam gamers, as the titles have yet to receive the Mac treatment. And that's seriously a shame, isn't it?

Fan site Seriously! supposedly got the scoop from Devolver Digital, publisher of HD remakes Serious Sam HD: The First Encounter and Serious Sam HD: The Second Encounter, about Serious Sam HD: Gold Edition -- a bundle which includes both remakes, as well as both original games. That can't be good for the original games' self-esteem, being bundled with sleeker, more attractive-looking versions. Have you no heart, Devolver Digital? According to Seriously!, Steam users will be able to download Gold Edition on Thursday for $39.99s. We've followed up with Devolver Digital for confirmation and will let you know what we hear back.

Finally, fans left hanging at the conclusion of Serious Sam HD: The First Encounter can get a bit of closure on September 22, as Majesco has confirmed the launch date for Serious Sam HD: The Second Encounter. If there's anything that these games are known for, it's their rich narrative and character development, so to leave us hanging like that is criminal. All jokes aside, we could all probably use a bit more of "shoot everybody and don't die" in our lives. Keeps you feeling young, you know? Serious Sam HD: The Second Encounter adds three new weapons -- the Sniper Rifle, Flamethrower and Chainsaw -- and co-op support for up to four players across 12 maps, including team-based and competitive modes. No price has been announced for The Second Encounter, though we suspect pricing will be in line with the first game: 1200 MS Points ($15). %Gallery-100187%

What you may not know about Sam, resident evil-alien-thing-killer and titular hero of the Serious Sam series, is that he's a serious guy. No, we don't mean he can't take a joke -- he's serious about savings, whether it be a coupon on a can of Campbell's Chunky or the fate of the whole world, he's all about the savings. And now GOG is saving you from a meaningless existence by offering the original Serious Sam: The First Encounter for $10. That Hamilton will not only net you the original shooter, but also the game's soundtrack, though we can't imagine why anyone would want that. We panic enough when we hear this in the game -- we don't need to start looking over our shoulder at every crosswalk for fear of kamikaze, combustible dudes running us down, you know?

This coming weekend, from July 8 until July 11, Steam will play host to a free-for-all multiplayer event for Serious Sam HD: The Second Encounter. Additionally, the game will also be 50% off -- only $10. The only problem is that apparently nobody told Devolver Digital's boss, Fork Parker. "This is total bullshit," he said. Show full PR text SERIOUS SAM HD: SECOND ENCOUNTER MULTIPLAYER FREE-FOR-ALL IS FREE FOR ALL THIS WEEKEND ON STEAM Gamers Get a Delicious Taste of Multiplayer Madness and 50% off Purchase Zagreb, Croatia, July 8, 2010 – In an effort to spread the Gospel of Sam to those non-believers who still haven't bathed in the redeeming light of high-definition, Croteam has decided to allow the few remaining heathens to partake in the visual delights of Serious Sam HD: The Second Encounter's over-the-top multiplayer modes. From July 8 through July 11, Steam users around the world will be able to play all the brilliant new modes of multiplayer fun with up to 16-players. New converts will be able to experience divine gameplay modes like Co-Op Survival, My Burden and Beast Hunt along with classic deathmatch and campaign co-op modes. Serious Sam HD: The Second Encounter will also be discounted by 50% during the promotion. Seriously. Half off a game that already costs less than $20. That's $10 sucka. No matter how you feel about Serious Sam's brand of first-person mayhem, you've got to admit the marketing behind the HD remakes has been brilliant -- and this latest video for Serious Sam HD: The Second Encounter is no different. It's the second promo to feature the "House of Sam," a place where folks can worship His divine shotgun; where those afflicted with Krundle Blindness -- an inability to see things in high-def -- can be be cured. Mostly, it's a place of magic. Click the play button on the trailer above and allow His divine presence to wash over you. Bathe in polygonal splendor and be healed, brothers and sisters. And remember: never attempt to treat your ailments with skunk meat.

There are times when it feels like some video games have a religious following. The latest trailer -- if you can call it that -- for Serious Sam HD: The Second Encounter illustrates what a real video game religion would be like. In short, it's kind of scary, in the way that only televangelists can be. Watch the video, and discover why Sam is the way.

Here at Joystiq, your health is our main priority. That's why we ensure that each and every post we present is void of toxins and meets your daily requirement of Vitamin Verbose. Still, sometimes we have to stray into the danger zone with things like this multplayer trailer for Serious Sam HD: The Second Encounter. Basically, the trailer's got more flashing lights than '70s disco -- but if that's no concern for you, feel free to soak in the 14 multiplayer modes presented above, which run the gamut from co-op to competitive to objective-based modes. It's a smorgasbord of multiplayer mayhem, really. There are tried-and-true gametypes like Capture the Flag and your usual Deathmatch variants available, but our interest lies in some of the more original modes: BeastHunt, My Burden, and Co-Op Survival look like they're quite fun.

While the title has been on the radar since November, Majesco has now confirmed that Serious Sam HD: The Second Encounter is headed to Xbox Live Arcade in addition to the PC. Previously relegated to the more nebulous "home console," the HD remake is officially coming to XBLA with some new features in toe. There is no release date mentioned, though the Steam version is currently listed for April 28. The game includes a new deathmatch mode along with co-op, capture the flag and survival modes. It also includes lots and lots of enemies. For those interested in the PC version, Steam is currently offering pre-purchases on the game for $17.99, two bucks off the normal $19.99 price. Pre-orders will also get an extra multiplayer and co-op character: Ugh-zan, the boss of The First Encounter. Check out a new trailer after the break. [Via Big Download]
