  • Crytek responds to Crysis rumors

This is tricky. Personally, when I hear someone say "maybe" or "I don't know" when prompted to decide if they want to go out to eat, or watch a movie, or get punched in the throat, it really means "no". They're just being nice. It means no. However! When approached about the recent rumors of Crysis getting ported onto the PlayStation 3, Crytek spokespeople replied to the rumors with a "no comment".The tricky part is this -- when I hear something like "no comment", I don't instantly think "oh, that means no" like I do with "maybe" or "I don't know". I think "yeah, but we can't talk about it yet." Why? Not like it matters, but we'd like to believe our instincts here at PS3 Fanboy. What about you guys? What's your gut telling you? Check your fanboyism at the door and go with your gut.

  • Crysis coming to PS3? This sounds fishy.

We've traveled down this road so many, many times. A long time ago, Crytek posted a search for people willing to work with the PlayStation 3. This spawned rumors that Crysis would be coming to Sony's new console. Crytek said no, that wasn't it, because Crysis is way beyond what any console is capable of. Then they flip-flopped and said that Crysis could be on consoles after all. A month ago, then, Crytek was rumored to be working on a title for the PS3 -- whether or not it was Crysis was not known. Now there's another job listing -- this one for cross-platform development and PlayStation 3 programming. One of the responsibilities of the job is to "Work on various aspects of porting to PS3 and creating solutions to get the utmost out of the PS3." Why would they need to get the utmost out of the PS3? What would they port requiring "the utmost"? It could very well be Crysis. What do you guys think?

  • RUMOR: Crytek working on PS3 title?

Crytek -- the ultimate developer when it comes to flip-flopping their stance on consoles and PC's. First, only PC's will run their games, then they can run on consoles too, but only the 360. Then they decide that, no, only the PC will do. Then they say that all systems can run their titles. Then they say that only a mental link to the minds of their developers will properly run their games. The titles we're referring to are... well... Crysis. But alack, alack, good sir, for nary a good rumor shalt pass beneath this nose escaping my powerful sense of smell! When translated into Sensical language, that means there's a PS3 title in the works by Crytek. When asked if they were working on any PS3 projects, Crytek collectively grinned and said: "I really wish I could tell you more right now" followed with "We are always working on lots of different things". Well, Crytek was looking to hire a bunch of PS3 developers a while back, so this isn't necessarily a surprise. We have to wonder, though, will it be an original title? Will it be exclusive? Or will it be Crysis? Leave us your thoughts!

We first showed you a glimpse of Crytek's GDC booth, now see why it was built. Talk about a convincing sales pitch. Something tells us Avatar Reality won't be the only studio with a CryENGINE2 license for much longer. (Better quality videos available for download at Crysis-Online.)

Crytek occupies a medium-sized booth space at this year's GDC show floor. The company, showing its CryENGINE2 to developers, announced that it found its first customer in Avatar Reality, Inc. Hoping to land more interest, the company is hosting a series of rotating presentations about its level editor, sound system, character animation, engine, and other features.Harald Seeley, Development Director for Crytek briefly spoke with us about the engine and its outlook, saying that it's at alpha now for the PC, and they'll ship the SDK to AVI in four to six weeks. Seeley said that Crytek is working to bring CryENGINE2 to the PS3 and Xbox 360, but those plans don't mean that Crysis will be released on those platforms.Modders and indie designers should look for a PC version of the development environment bundled with Crysis. Seeley said that the consumer tools offer nearly all of the features of the fully licensed engine, and that modders may be able to work out terms to release commercial software created with the free editor.Seeley thinks that the commercial version of CryENGINE2 will lead other middleware engines because it was developed for DirectX 10 instead of being prettied up from an older version of the API. He said, "This will become the standard. ... [Gamers] won't be willing to settle for titanium trees any longer. If it looks breakable, if it looks like you should be able to pick it up, [you will.]"%Gallery-1976%

We're interested in upcoming shooter Crysis based on our time playing, but we're not yet sold on the graphic hype the game has been gathering. Today's video pick from GameTrailers shows off footage from the game the game engine, mostly highlighting plants and their shadows. We held on to our skeptic streak through the video, but the movement of the plants and the intricate shadows chipped away at our cynical shells; the engine looks good. But we'll have to wait for the Crysis release to decide how much praise -- and hype -- the game warrants.See the lovely leaves after the break.[Update 1: Thanks to the commentors who pointed out that the video is a tech demo and not directly from the game.]

Among other things, EA is bringing some pretty big guns to GDC in March. They'll be speaking about Sims on the Wii, seeking new IPs and other stuff. Aside from those, though, the following are listed as confirmed to show up: Crysis Hellgate: London Mercenaries 2: World in Flames The Orange Box (this has Half-Life 2: Episode 2, Portal and Team Fortress 2 in it) Oh, did we mention? These won't be on the show floor. Seems they're only for super-secret, special people. Oh well. We're sure stuff will get leaked about them no matter who is or isn't allowed.

As Crysis looms, anxiety levels are high. The perceived demands of Crytek's DirectX 10 showcase present a financial burden to those with dated PCs. Speaking to Next-Gen, Crytek CEO Cevat Yerli assured gamers that Crysis will be playable on 2- to 3-year-old gaming rigs, but warned that if you do plan to rely on aging hardware, avoid those who have the game running on DX10 -- it might be hard to go back to your scaled-down DX9 experience.Yerli also seemed to express Crytek's approval of Vista, telling Next-Gen, "Most likely we will upgrade all dev stations to Vista and move to Vista-only titles". This apparent commitment to the new operating system stands in stark contrast to comments issued by id Software's John Carmack, who isn't pleased that Microsoft has "artificially" tethered DX10 to Vista.

  • EA claims no Crysis for 360

Despite 1UP's claims to the contrary, EA has issued a statement denying the existence of Crysis for the Xbox 360. The information originated from a 1UP podcast, in which the 1UP staff claimed to have communicated with Crytek about the existence of a completely different and retooled version of Crysis for the 360 (the reasons for the retooling stem from the 360's lack of DirectX 10 support). EA states that 1UP's information was the result of a "miscommunication" and that no plans for a 360 version of Crysis have been announced. Furthermore, EA expects a retraction to be made soon. While there may have been some kind of miscommunication involved here, we're not buying that EA isn't working on a 360 version of Crysis. Considering its reputation as the prettiest game evar, we find it hard to believe that EA isn't going to leverage this franchise on every platform imaginable. Crysis will likely hit the broadest spectrum possible, from the 360 all the way down to mobile phones. After all, if EA didn't spread Crysis as far as possible, then they wouldn't be EA.[Via Joystiq]

EA has shot down recent claims that a version of Crysis is headed to Xbox 360. The publisher described 1UP's discussion of the game (via podcast) as a "miscommunication." The gaming site claimed to have spoken with Crytek developers who confirmed an Xbox 360 title was in the works. Miscommunication? Color us suspicious.EA might not be ready to make an announcement, but the hype surrounding this to-be franchise demands that Crysis games appear on Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3. Wait for it.

In the latest episode of the 1UP Yours, Crytek has confirmed that a 360 version of Crysis is in development. It should be noted, however, that the game will not be a port of the PC version, but rather an entirely new game built from the ground up. The reasoning for this decision, according to the devs, is that the PC game simply couldn't run on an Xbox 360. Given that the title uses many of the advanced features of DirectX 10 (the 360 uses DirectX 9), this isn't too surprising -- although the explanation contradicts earlier statements from the developers. The game will reportedly share many elements with its PC counterpart, but contain entirely different graphics and gameplay. Just curious, does anyone out there have a beefy enough PC to play Crysis anyway?[Via Joystiq]

Xboxic reports that an unnamed developer, speaking to 1UP, has revealed details about a Crysis game headed to Xbox 360. Allegedly, the console version will not be a direct port of the PC title that's currently in development. Like Far Cry before it, Crysis will be stripped down for its console debut. The Xbox 360 version will supposedly incorporate similar story elements to its PC brethren, but will feature different gameplay aspects (physics, environments, etc.) that better utilize 360's DirectX 9 technology (the PC version is being built using DirectX 10). Expect full details if and when Crytek finally (and officially) announces this much-anticipated console installment of its high-profile franchise.See also: Crytek says 360 and PS3 can't handle Crysis Crytek revises claim: Crysis could be ported

Update -- Joystiq (translation: this writer) got punked by the Spanish and the Day of the Innocents. Thanks to all the commenters who chimed in to let us know that this was indeed an April's Fools type hoax, and that it's not to be believed. Aye, dios mio!First Crytek said that their first upcoming graphical overload game Crysis couldn't be ported to the Xbox 360 or the PlayStation 3. Then they switched gears and said, "Oops ... looks like we were wrong." Now we have some evidence that confirms it'll be coming to the 360 sooner than you think.Granted, the proof is translated from todoxbox360.com, but if the Google translator is to be believed, then it looks like Crysis will be hitting Microsoft's bad boy at some point. The article doesn't say when, but it's tantalizing enough to make us drool. Crysis is visually amazing, and 360 owners would be happy to see it on their screens. Hopefully we'll have official word from Electronic Arts soon, although they're probably getting ready to ring in the New Year with millions of microtransactions.[Thanks, MECHAN1ZED and Janx]

  • Electronics Arts announces many upcoming/future titles

Electronic Arts has gone on record... about its upcoming titles. Most importantly are two of their more high-profile games -- Crysis and Army of Two. Let us recall briefly that the former is a pretty crazy looking shooter for the PC (although they've gained quite an ego... and change their minds a lot) and the latter is the hotly anticipated co-op game for the PS3 and 360. These games are now slated for a fiscal year 2008 release (after this coming March of '07). So... if you're really pumped for these games, we apologize, but your waiting will have to continue a bit longer. EA's CFO, Warren Jensen, confirmed also many beloved franchises do indeed have sequels in the works. First up, Sims 3. Probably for fiscal of 2009, says the big man. Also, there's a Wii-specific (Wiicific?) Sims title also in the works. In the same vein, and not overdoing real-life simulation at all, is a Sims 2 Holiday Edition due out fairly soon for the PS3 -- hopefully this holiday season. Aside from Sims? Well, there's a SimCity coming up! Oh, and also another Lord of the Rings game and the next-gen realization of the over-hyped-but-still-decent Black. Well fellows, any of these really get you curious or anxious?

  • Crytek changes mind again -- Crysis can be on consoles

First, Crytek wanted people for it's PS3 version of Crysis. Then, they said the consoles can't handle their oh-so-perfect game. Now they say that they can easily port the game to consoles? Now, just as a personal moral standpoint, one may feel this game should be ignored since the creators obviously can't decide what they want to do with their creation, but let's give them another chance.Lead artist Michael Khaimzon said this tidbit: "I don't think there would be any problem to convert anything we work on to the next-gen consoles if we decided to...We have enough power here, with programmers and artists, to be able to do such a thing. It's just a matter of making the decision." So it could be done, there just hasn't been an official word on it yet. Sort of. The wanting PS3 programmers is fairly... well, it's something to think about. We'll keep you posted if any more "official" announcements are made.[via Joystiq]

During Leipzig, Crytek senior game designer Bernd Diemer claimed Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 were too weak to handle Crysis. Now, slightly down the totem pole, Crytek lead artist Michael Khaimzon is saying he's confident that Crysis could be ported. "I don't think there would be any problem to convert anything we work on to the next-gen consoles," Khaimzon told GamesIndustry.biz, adding, "[but] I don't know of any official plans to do so" (besides these).Forget Khaimzon's wishy-washy "don't know of any official plans" garble; EA, the publisher, doesn't want this to be a PC-only franchise. Crysis will wind up on 360 and PS3 (and probably Wii too), in one form or another, within a year. Just look at what's happened to Far Cry. Ubisoft has pimped the franchise like a mo'fo. Think EA's gonna miss out on an equally ripe opportunity -- and fall to second place? Nah, ain't gonna happen.

Some news slipped out during the Leipzig convention in Germany that Crytek senior game designer Bernd Diemer said their upcoming first-person shooter Crysis was too über for the next-generation consoles -- the 360 and PlayStation 3 specifically. The heart of the matter related directly to DirectX 10 and it being the only way to truly unleash the beast behind this beautiful game.Diemer was quoted as saying that "next generation consoles like the Xbox 360 and the PlayStation 3 do not offer the sufficient power" needed for some high-quality Crysis action. This news comes counter to the recent news that the Crytek team was looking for some PS3 worker bees for a possible Crysis port to the system. We may not see Crysis on the PS3, but it's still entirely possible we may see Crysis-like games in the future on Sony's console.

Crytek has a message for console gamers concerning their slobber-inducing FPS, Crysis -- and it's along the lines of "No soup for you!":Speaking at the Games Convention in Leipzig, Bernd Diemer, senior game designer of Crytek, explained that next-generation consoles don't offer enough computational power to run Crysis, German publication Heise reported. ...Diemer explained that "next generation consoles like the Xbox 360 and the PlayStation 3 do not offer the sufficient power" to assure the quality of gameplay Crytek demand for Crysis.Pass the sour grapes. I'm beginning to think this game exists just to make the PC gaming-centric nerds in the IT department feel superior--as if their dinky home rigs could handle the specs either.

German newspaper Die Welt reports that EA may be taking the initial steps towards acquiring Crytek. The article quotes EA's international publishing gm Gerhard Florin as describing Crytek as "a very, very interesting candidate [for acquisition]." In January, it was revealed that EA would publish Crytek's Crysis, a deal that has undoubtedly led EA to take a closer look at Crytek and the possibility of bringing the German studio into its fold.Crytek's co-founder Faruk Yerli has confirmed that his company has discussed an acquisition deal with EA, but Yerli added that Crytek might go public instead. Crytek's most significant asset, CryEngine 2, a promising next-gen development engine, would be another big score for EA, fitting nicely alongside Criterion's Renderware.

1up reports that ATI has debunked a rumor that Xbox 360 could be upgraded to support DirectX 10 via a patch. "Xbox360 cannot run DX10," an ATI spokesperson told 1up. Currently, Microsoft's console runs an advanced version of DirectX 9, which, according to ATI, features "memory export that can enable DX10-class functionality such as stream-out."It's difficult to say when and if studios that are developing cross-platform titles for Xbox 360 and Vista will hit a roadblock because of DirectX variances between the two platforms, but certainly a game like Crytek's Crysis, which does support DX9 with some DX10 features, could be optimized and ported to consoles.
