  • Report: Cyanide also working on Game of Thrones RPG

Good news for fans of Westeros and its inhabitants -- not only does Cyanide have an RTS based on George R.R. Martin's fantasy series coming out, but apparently the Paris-based developer is also working on an RPG set in the world of the Song of Ice and Fire. French site FactorNews got a look at the game in development, and it sounds like just the thing to get your dire wolf howling. The title is supposed to play out around the book's events rather than follow them, but still follows the conventions of seeing various points of view. Players will start out as a brother of the Night Watch up at the Wall, then move on to play as Alester Sarwyck, a Red Priest returning to the kingdom after being exiled for 15 years across the Narrow Sea. Gameplay is described as a mix of The Witcher and other pseudo-turn-based RPGs, with players choosing skills and directing traffic in the midst of real-time battle. Cyanide is aiming for a release on both PC and consoles. It all sounds awesome -- but A Game of Thrones: The RPG (working title) isn't planned to see the light of day any time before Martin's Dance with Dragons hits bookstores. If Cyanide delivers everything it is promising in this preview, we'd be willing to pull a Jaime Lannister and kill a king just to get a copy of it.

It's been half a year since Cyanide revealed early concept art for its adaptation of George R.R. Martin's A Song of Ice and Fire novels. Today, publisher Focus Home Interactive revealed the first pair of screenshots from the series first outing, A Game of Thrones: Genesis, giving us a look at what the action therein will actually look like. Apparently, it's going to feature large, scary dragons. And villagers. And cottages which appear to enjoy being burned to the ground, signifying their approval with an olde-timey thumbs up placard. We think that's what's going on, there. The publisher also revealed a few scant details about the title -- namely, that it will be a real-time strategy affair, with multiplayer support for up to eight different combatants. Victory can be claimed through force, diplomacy or subterfuge -- though, we imagine we'll be leaning on a healthy diet of all three. Forplomafuge. %Gallery-116894%

  • Blood Bowl: Legendary Edition coming to PC in 2010

Blood Bowl, you'll remember, is the wacky little mash-up between fantasy and American football that's based on the Games Workshop turn-based board game, taking place in the Warhammer setting. It's been tearing up the field since last year, but at the end of 2010, Cyanide and Focus Home Interactive are upping the ante with the newly announced Legendary Edition for the PC. The Legendary Edition will add 12 new races to the current eight, so Undead, Amazons, Ogres and others will all get to toss the boarskin around in new stadiums and tournaments. The game will also include a story mode in which players will assume the role of a freelance coach tasked with rising up through the ranks. Sounds like fun.

If you're a fan of tabletop war games, you're probably hotly anticipating Cyanide's video game adaptation of Games Workshop's classic fantasy-football mash-up, Blood Bowl. You are also probably pretty old, and have a large, curly beard. Likely a gray or white beard, due to the aforementioned elderliness. We've got great news for these senescent war game enthusiasts -- in a recent interview with Eurogamer, Cyanide's Antoine Villepreux explained the developer would be glad to tend to Games Workshop's "forgotten IPs that we think deserve video game adaptations." If the words Inquisitor and Mighty Empires bring haste to your old, old heart, a table-to-TV adaptation of your favorite Games Workshop franchises might be within the realm of possibilities.

  • Blood Bowl developer: making PS3 version 'a bit risky and expensive'

If you're a PS3-only gamer who happens to be a fan of vintage tabletop gaming, monsters, and football, then you are probably acutely, painfully aware of the lack of Blood Bowl video games in your future. Cyanide is making an Xbox 360 version -- why not use the same assets and codebase for the PS3 like so many others? What's the deal? Does it hate the PS3 or something? In an interview with Destructoid, the developer explained its apparent snub on the platform. "Cyanide is a small company," a representative said. "We have no previous experience on that platform [and] it would have been a bit risky and expensive for us. But, we are hoping to do a PS3 version if the game is selling well."So, rather than a lack of faith in the platform, Cyanide has somewhat of a lack of faith in its own ability to develop for it without killing the budget. It still means no PS3 version for now, but it also means no janky, poorly ported PS3 version for now. That's ... something. And if the other versions of the game, coming out in Q2 of this year, are successful, we may see a (good) PS3 version yet.[Via VG247]

  • Blood Bowl Teaser Trailer

We're really happy to see a little more info about Blood Bowl after such a long hiatus on its news. Despite the fact that it isn't wholly original (it was a board game after all) it is of a genre that the 360 in general hasn't seen a whole lot of and plus, orcs make just about everything better.Being a bit more serious though, the trailer really doesn't show much; but how much is there really to show off in a turn-based strategy game? True, the game does have a real-time option, but we already have Madden for that and it just seems to be a betrayal of the game's roots. And just like certain other highly anticipated games, we're still waiting on a firm release date. %Gallery-15958%

Tabletop gamers are no strangers to the game Blood Bowl, which we mentioned back in November. The game has spanned 22 years, multiple editions and several expansion sets. The basic concept is "fantasy" football, literally. As in orcs, trolls, elves and the like playing an organized team sport where they try to tear their opponents' heads off. Check out the newly released, Warcraft-tastic trailer after the break.

Don't be surprised if you've never heard of it. Blood Bowl was an old tabletop game from the makers of Warhammer. This version, announced last November for 360, PC, DS, and PSP, is being made by developer Cyanide and currently has no release date beyond Q2 2008. The thing about this news is that the game's distribution medium has not yet been announced. With the game seeing release on the handhelds, one can't see this title being very in-depth. But if the game is not very deep, one can't see it being a full release either. Will this end up being an XBLA title, or will it end up be closer to another recent release that had the graphical prowess of an XBLA game? The only obstacle to Arcade release we can see would be the game's file size. Anyway if it's an XBLA game thats great, we could always use more turn based strategy on there. Plus, the game has a real-time mode as well in case turn-based combat isn't really your thing.%Gallery-15958%

No, in fact it's a video game. Imagine that? Arriving courtesy of French developer Cyanide, Blood Bowl is a title based on the Games Workshop fantasy tabletop game of the same name. Cyanide assures us that the game will be a "faithful representation" of the tabletop experience, so fans should find their title intact on the DS, barring any unforeseen circumstances. If you want to check out some of the many versions of the tabletop game, hit up this link here.[Via Joystiq]

  • Cyanide confirms Blood Bowl for Xbox 360, PSP, DS

Having opened a new studio in Montreal earlier this year and released the Diablo-clone Loki, French developer Cyanide has what we call 'a lot of irons in the fire.' The studio also announced today that it has waded waist-deep into the murky waters of middleware development, creating its own "dynamic 3D animation engine," which Cyanide interestingly describes as a tool that "integrates physical and biomechanical laws under the control of a powerful artificial intelligence system." Skynet, can you hear us?While the company hopes to license the engine to other "small and medium sized" game developers, Cyanide is not above eating its own dog food, and will utilize the technology in its own projects, the first of which will be a title based on Games Workshop's fantasy tabletop game Blood Bowl. First announced briefly last year, the real news here is that the game, which is an unofficial follow up to the unlicensed PC title Chaos League, has been confirmed as in development for the Xbox 360, PSP, and Nintendo DS, as well as the PC. Few details are known at present beyond that the studio calls the project a "faithful representation" of the tabletop game, and adds that Blood Bowl should be released sometime in late 2008. In the absence of a new Mutant League Football, we will take what we can get.

Okay, so for the most part Runaway 2 looks great. The art in the backgrounds is beautiful, and we're genetically unable to hate on a new adventure game. We're total jerks, however, and had to point and laugh at this screenshot, because, despite the high quality of the rest of the game's art, the character models tend to look like cel-shaded Poser models with caveman faces. It's totally unfair and mean for us to draw attention to that!To make up for it, we'll point out that Runaway 2 has what might be the prettiest inventory screen we've seen on the DS. The color in the background image is wonderful. Hooray for occasionally great art design!

The recently-announced DS version of Runaway 2 is looking pretty spiffy -- and that's a good thing, since it's apparently set for the end of this month. So soon? At least, according to Jeux France; other sources we've seen indicate early next year. And really, considering the holiday glut, early next year may be better, but we'll keep an eye on this one regardless, because the expanding visuals are certainly an interesting idea.%Gallery-9671%

What was that about adventure games? Asked and answered, it would seem. Focus Home Interactive is bringing the DS version of the adventure game Runaway: Dream of the Turtle to the U.S.The game follows Brian and Gina, a couple who just survived a bunch of crazy stuff (in the first Runaway, obviously), as their vacation turns into-- what else-- an adventure. Apparently the story picks up soon after the first game and ends in a cliffhanger that resolves in the as-yet-unreleased third game. We're getting ... the middle.Runaway 2 on the PC earned some wildly mixed reviews, ranging from a score of 100 all the way down to 40. So it's either great or terrible, or somewhere in between.[Update: Screens can be found here.]
