It's only the first day of the show, but there's already been plenty of announcements, press conferences and lots of lost sleep. One of the most immediate things you'll notice on the show floor is that everything has voice control this year, even garbage cans. And tons of companies are rushing to integrate Alexa into cars, washing machines and refrigerators. The panel will also talk about the best and worst things they've seen so far.

In 2014 we said the Engadget Podcast was going on hiatus to "retool." Well, we haven't been sitting on our laurels. Over the last two years we've rethought our editorial mission, completely redesigned the website and, now, we're launching a new and improved podcast.

It's been a long and busy week, leaving a newly nicotine-free Terrence a tad more irritable than usual. Ben's been busy too, but that just means long hours of playing Mario Kart 8. Both of these factors seem to cancel each other out and the result is a pleasant stroll through the world of Xbox One, this time sporting a lower price tag and one less peripheral. Is it Microsoft's way to boost sales, or are there more complex plans afoot? It depends on who you listen too, but the Redmond camp believes it's doing gamers with tight budgets a big favor. We also dig into the issue of smart guns: how they work and what it could mean for the future of firearms. So plop on down in your comfiest chair and get ready for the smooth sounds of tech news, brought to you by the Engadget Podcast crew. Dr. Dre hit it big this week with Apple flinging $3.2 billion his way for Beats Electronics and the Cristal beers were flowin' in celebration. Big Ben and JV are throwing down their thoughts on the matter, but it's not like it was WhatsApp money. Nintendo made the news as well, although not in such a celebratory light. The tight-lipped company failed to spin a certain social blunder with its Tomodachi Life game and the response from the Twitterverse has been fierce. Life can be tough sometimes. But hey, if you've got the dough, you can soon live smarter in NYC's upcoming smart neighborhood. In the meantime, stay strong, keep your chin up and remember, it's okay if things get a little Nasty sometimes. Please enjoy this week's Engadget Podcast responsibly. Drunk Dr. Dre, y'all. That's where we're at this morning, having witnessed the hilarity of him and Tyrese celebrating the still unannounced $3.2 billion purchase of Beats by Apple. We're down one beirdo, but Ben (that's me) and special guest star Joseph are here to talk through the past week: Nintendo's dreary financials, New York City's biggest construction project in a century, and the aforementioned hilarity/enormity of the Beats purchase. Grab a pair of comfy headphones, your favorite burrito bowl with extra pico de gallo, and saddle up for this week's show.

Urban legend confirmed. Atari did dump a pile of its E.T. game cartridges into a landfill in New Mexico and it's thanks to Microsoft's recent documentary efforts that we've gotten some closure. This leads your hosts to ponder the situation that led up to the cast off games and what it meant for Atari at the time. Inevitably, Terrence recalls his own Atari experiences as a youth, sitting down with a second-hand console and blasting away the hours with Yars Revenge. Ben is perfectly fine to sit back and listen -- he was a Nintendo kid, after all. But soon enough, he sets his gaming-honed gray matter in motion and delivers a cogent explanation about mobile privacy rights. It's all packed into this one episode, so head on down to the streaming links and feed your brain with the Engadget Podcast. It's delicious! Things are heating up in the podcast studio this week and it's either Terrence's cardigan, Amazon's new Fire TV or the residual effects of Joseph's encounter with a real action hero. There's also a pile of news that came out of Microsoft's Build conference, which isn't surprising considering how long it dragged on. Redmond's own has released Windows Phone 8.1 -- complete with notifications (!) and the Cortana voice-search tool -- amidst a flurry of other news. Having had a few days with Amazon's new streaming box already, the crew offers insights about the development of the Fire eco-system and its chops as a gaming device. We've got plenty in store, so be sure to head to the streaming links below for this week's episode of the Engadget Podcast. It helps if you're born Luckey, but if you also work hard at building Oculus Rift, the rewards are apparently somewhere in the ballpark of $2 billion dollars. Not Dr. Evil levels, to be sure, but you could certainly equip a school of dolphins with lasers, or buy a ton of dogecoins. If you haven't guessed, Joseph and Ben focus on Facebook's recent announcement to purchase Oculus VR. Terrence is on hand, but seems to be resting his eyes and mumbling something about sheep. In contrast, Ben is feeling well rested, although he has spent most of his vacation playing learning how to play Dark Souls 2. While he displays the smug smile of someone who's finally cracked that nut, Joseph pilots the podcast through a series of bizarre dream sequences. Oh, and if you want to get up to speed on the week in tech news, you've come to the right place for that, too. As for details about accelerated custard, we can't help you there, but everything else you need to know is down below at the Engadget Podcast streaming links. You're welcome. Experience Mars with Sony's Project Morpheus, hear Joseph's pitch for virtual reality installations at arcades around the country, and learn the truth about your pet cat -- spoiler alert: it's an alien. We've heard that robots are coming soon to a wrist near you courtesy of Google's new Android Wear platform, but is the wearable world ready for a smartSwatch? You guys, virtual reality is here. Like, it's really, really a thing now thanks to Morpheus -- Sony's prototype VR headset for the PlayStation 4. That doodad, gizmobob, whatsamajunkit was just unveiled at the Game Developers Conference in San Francisco alongside a slew of other VR gadgetry, and our own Ben Gilbert lived through it all to tell the tale. So please join us, the Three Engadget-y Amigos, as we walk you back through the week in tech that was, make a few blue jokes along the way, and terrorize Terrence O'Brien with our mirth.

Ben Gilbert is joined by Engadget editor and former Best Buy celeb Chris Velazco, along with our social media guru John Colucci who's managed to drag himself away from Grumpy Cat and 3D-printed Oreos long enough to share his thoughts on SXSW. While Ben flexes his verbal Shaq Fu to keep the podcast on track, the real Shaquille is actually scheduled to host a panel on wearables at the Austin event this week. There's a good deal of strange news to talk about, but none quite as odd as Dorian Nakamoto's #bitcoinchase on Thursday. Of course there's a method to all this madness and it can be found at the streaming links below, steganographically embedded into this week's episode of the Engadget Podcast. Enjoy! Gaming has been scoring big in the headlines lately and Ben Gilbert's been paying attention. The studio that brought you BioShock Infinite has been dissolved and Doom 4 becomes 'Doom' all over again -- which is fine with Terrence since that's how he remembers it anyway. It might be IPO time for the company behind Candy Crush Saga and the numbers behind that reasoning are pretty interesting. Google even announced its Project Tango phone and it's environment mapping capabilities could turn your home or work space into an augmented reality gaming zone. Oh, and Facebook just bought WhatsApp for about $19 billion, so there's that. There's a lot going on, so head on down to the streaming links below for your weekly dose of tech, courtesy of the Engadget Podcast.
