What we're watching and why: Like so many others I missed "The Matrix" when it hit the theaters back in 1999. Again, like so many others, I've become a Matrix-addict and I've probably watched it well over a hundred times; but not in HD. That changes tonight, when you can join me for "The Matrix" on TNT-HD. Actually, I don't exactly have room for all of you, so why don't you save some overpriced gasoline and just tune in at 8:00 p.m. with me?Here are some other HDTV programs showing on selected networks today:ABC: The Tuxedo (8 p.m.)CBS: CSI: Crime Scene Investigation (9 p.m.), Without a Trace (10 p.m.)Fox: NFL Exhibition Football: Saints at Patriots (8 p.m.)NBC: Joey (8 p.m.), Will & Grace (8:30 p.m.), Scrubs (9 and 9:30 p.m.), ER (10 p.m.)WB: Smallville (8 p.m.), Everwood (9 p.m.)ESPN-HD: SportsCenter (6 p.m.), Baseball Tonight (7 p.m.)HBOHD: Sphere (5:30 p.m.), Spider-Man 2 (7:45 p.m.)

What we're watching and why:  If you're in the mood for some intellectual and visual treats in high definition, Discovery HD is the channel for you tonight. It begins at 8 with "The Once and Future City: Chicago," which explores the history and future of the Windy City. Then there's "HD Getaways: Nature Beaches" at 9. It shows the "golden sand, sparkling ocean and tons of sun" of three beaches. Finally, "Secrets of Hawaii's National Parks" airs at 10: "Discover a land where the awe-inspiring, pyrotechnics of earth-in-the-making meets a tropical paradise." Sounds like a lovely night in front of your HDTV set, doesn't it?Here are the HDTV programs showing on some selected networks today:ABC: According to Jim (8 p.m.), Rodney (8:30 p.m.), According to Jim (9 p.m.), Rodney (9:30 p.m.), Boston Legal (10 p.m.)CBS: NCIS (8 p.m.)NBC: Law & Order: Special Victims Unit (10 p.m.), The Tonight Show (11:35 p.m.)WB: Gilmore Girls (8 and 9 p.m.)ESPN-HD: NFL Live (4 p.m.), SportsCenter (11 p.m.)

What we're watching and why: Because of a rain delay, the PGA Championship continues today in high definition on CBS, beginning at 10 a.m. Football is also in HDTV tonight, but this time over at ABC's sister network ESPN-HD at 8. And while it sounds a bit trashy, HDNet "Bikini Destinations" takes you on a tour of Moscow with models as the tour guides. They explore the city's art, architecture, culture and cuisine. It airs at 10 p.m. and 12:30 a.m.Here are other HDTV programs showing on some selected networks today. All times are Eastern:ABC: Remember the Titans (8 p.m.)CBS: King of Queens (8 p.m.), Everybody Loves Raymond (8:30 p.m.), Two and a Half Men (9 and 9:30 p.m.), CSI: Miami (10 p.m.)NBC: Las Vegas (9 p.m.), Medium (10 p.m.), The Tonight Show with Jay Leno (11:35 p.m.), Late Night with Conan O'Brien (12:37 a.m.)Fox: House (9 p.m.)UPN: One on One (8 p.m.), Girlfriends (9 p.m.), Half & Half (9:30 p.m.)WB: Summerland (9 p.m.)ESPN-HD: NFL Live (4 p.m.), Monday Night Countdown (7 p.m.), NFL Preseason: Eagles at Steelers (8 p.m.), SportsCenter (11 p.m.)

What we're watching and why: It's not my cup of chai, but HDNet is showing "Gloria Estefan: Live & Unwrapped" tonight at 9 and repeating it again at midnight. Earlier, at 5 p.m., HDNet is showing NASCAR racing: the Busch Grand National West NAPA Auto Parts 200. And don't forget that the final round of the PGA Championship airs in high def on CBS, starting at 2 p.m. The Cubs end the day with an 8 p.m. high-def matchup with the Cards. All in all, a hearty HDTV day.UPDATE: NBC is showing a NASCAR race in HDTV today, too. It started at 1:30 p.m.Here are some other HDTV programs showing on selected networks today:ABC: Desperate Housewives (9 p.m.), Grey's Anatomy (10 p.m.)CBS: PGA Championship (2 p.m.), Cold Case (8 p.m.), Living with the Dead - Part 1 (9 p.m.)NBC: Law & Order: Criminal Intent (9 p.m.), Crossing Jordan (10 p.m.)Fox: Malcolm in the Middle (7 p.m.)ESPN-HD: Baseball Tonight (7 p.m.), MLB: Cards at Cubs (8 p.m.), SportsCenter (11 p.m.)ESPN 2-HD: NHRA Nationals (6 p.m.)

What we're watching and why: Plenty of sports in high def today. Of course, there's round three of the PGA Championship at 2 p.m. on CBS. I'll be switching between golf (in standard def, unfortunately) and the Busch Series Zippo 200 NASCAR race from Watkins Glen International in Watkins Glen, N.Y., at 2 p.m. on NBC. If you're into soccer, you can catch Los Angeles at Chicago on HDNet at 8:30 p.m. All times are Eastern. Here are some other HDTV programs showing on selected networks today:ABC: Any Given Sunday (8 p.m.)CBS: PGA Championship (2 p.m.), NCIS (9 p.m.)NBC: NASCAR racing (2 p.m.), Law & Order (9 p.m.), Law & Order: Trial by Jury (10 p.m.)Fox: Malcolm in the Middle (7:30 p.m.)UPN: NCIS (9 p.m.)ESPN-HD: SportsCenter (11 p.m.)ESPN 2-HD: NHRA Qualifying (6 p.m.)TNT-HD: Jurassic Park III (8 and 10 p.m.)

What we're watching and why: I was complaining earlier about the abyss of high-def golf coverage, so it's only fair that I point it out when it does air. While it's already started by the time you read this, the PGA Championship's second round is on TNT-HD until 7 p.m. Eastern. All the top players are there, so it's a good chance to catch them in HDTV.Here are some other HDTV programs showing on selected networks today:ABC: 8 Simple Rules (8 p.m.), Hope & Faith (8:30 and 9 p.m.), Less Than Perfect (9:30 p.m.)CBS: Veronica Mars (8 p.m.), Numbers (10 p.m.)NBC: Crossing Jordan (10 p.m.), The Tonight Show (11:35 p.m.)Fox: Arrested Development (8, 8:30, 9, 9:30 p.m.)WB: What I Like About You (8 p.m.), Reba (9 p.m.)ESPN-HD: NFL Live (4 p.m.), SportsCenter (11 p.m.)

  • ESPN2-HD coming to DirecTV next month

    by

    08.11.2005

This news is semi-old because it was announced earlier in the year, just without the details. Today the details became clear in an e-mail I just received from Broadcasting & Cable. It was announced that DirecTV will launch ESPN2-HD on September 8th. Approximately 700,000 DirecTV subscribers will receive the new channel.ESPN actually launched this channel at the Consumer Electronics Show (CES) back in January. It took until now to get the content to satellite viewers, which is surprising. It's possible that DirecTV didn't have the bandwidth to carry the channel until now. Prior to this announcement, only Adelphia and Mediacom cable customers had access to ESPN2-HD.I won't see the new channel; do we have any folks receiving ESPN in HD now? The HD content seems far and few between for an HD channel; my hope is that the second channel contains more in high-def, and I don't mean "Sports Center."

What we're watching and why: I'm going to suggest two shows airing on Discovery HD tonight, as I can't decide on just one. First, there's Comet Collision! about NASA's successful efforts to view the inside of a 66,000 mph comet. The second is American Chopper, where the family dysfunction can be only get better in high def. Tonight, the shop is building the ultimate chopper to honor the officers of law enforcement. But before any work begins, the usual disagreements start. Here are some other HDTV programs showing on selected networks today:ABC: Lost (10 p.m.)CBS: Still Standing (8 p.m.), Yes, Dear (8:30 p.m.), King of Queens (9:30 p.m.), CSI: NY (10 p.m.)NBC: Law & Order (10 p.m.), The Tonight Show (11:35 p.m.)Fox: Bernie Mac (9:30 p.m.)UPN: Veronica Mars (9 p.m.)WB: One Tree Hill (8 p.m.), Smallville (9 p.m.)ESPN-HD: NFL Live (4 p.m.), MLB: Rangers at Red Sox (7 p.m.), Baseball Tonight (10 p.m.), SportsCenter (11 p.m.)ESPN 2-HD: MLB: Angels at A's (10 p.m.)

What we're watching and why:  There's nothing like a Space Shuttle launch, and there's certainly nothing like a Space Shuttle launch in HDTV. I was wooed last week, but I was disappointed this morning when the landing was not shown in HD because the shuttle had to land at Edwards Air Force Base rather than in Florida. Perhaps HDNet can have a backup next time and install cameras at Edwards, too. HDNet is taking all of this launch and other material, stitching it together and presenting "World Report: Space -- The Shuttle Returns to Service" tonight at 8 Eastern. (Don't forget that you can download HDNet's coverage of the shuttle launch in high definition here.) The next launch probably won't take place until November. Here are the HDTV programs showing on some selected networks today:ABC: My Wife and Kids (8 p.m.), Rodney (8:30 p.m.), According to Jim (9 p.m.), Rodney (9:30 p.m.), Boston Legal (10 p.m.)CBS: NCIS (8 p.m.)NBC: Law & Order: Special Victims Unit (10 p.m.), The Tonight Show (11:35 p.m.)Fox: House (9 p.m.)UPN: One on One (8 p.m.)WB: Gilmore Girls (9 p.m.)ESPN-HD: NFL Live (4 p.m.), SportsCenter (11 p.m.)

What we're watching and why: Football is back! And of course it's in high def. It's only an exhibition game, but Monday Night Football returns for its final season on ABC before ESPN takes over on Monday and ABC moves to Sunday nights in 2006. The Miami Dolphins take on the Chicago Bears in the Hall of Fame game that marks the return of Ricky Williams. Of course, Al Michaels will be calling the game, with John Madden providing his detailed color. It starts at 8 p.m. Eastern. Here are other HDTV programs showing on some selected networks today. All times are Eastern:ABC: Monday Night Football, Exhibition: Dophins vs. Bears (8 p.m.)CBS: King of Queens (8 p.m.), Everybody Loves Raymond (8:30 p.m.), Two and a Half Men (9 and 9:30 p.m.), CSI: Miami (10 p.m.)NBC: The Tonight Show with Jay Leno (11:35 p.m.)UPN: One on One (8 p.m.), Girlfriends (9 p.m.), Half & Half (9:30 p.m.)WB: Summerland (9 p.m.)ESPN-HD: NFL Live (4 p.m.), Monday Night Countdown (7 p.m.), MLB: Cardinals at Brewers (8 p.m.), SportsCenter (11 p.m.)

What we're watching and why: Sorry, but I have to go with baseball again. The Sunday night baseball game is the Cubs at the Mets on ESPN-HD at 8 p.m. The greenery always look gorgeous in HD and, of course, the plays are much more spectacular in high def. The game may not prove as exciting as the HDTV, however. The Cubs have lost their last four games and the Mets are in last place in the NL East. But everything looks at least halfway decent in high def, so it could be a good game. Here are some other HDTV programs showing on selected networks today:ABC: Desperate Housewives (9 p.m.), Grey's Anatomy (10 p.m.)CBS: Cold Case (8 p.m.), Deep Impact (9 p.m.)NBC: Law & Order: Criminal Intent (9 p.m.), Crossing Jordan (10 p.m.)Fox: Malcolm in the Middle (7 p.m.)ESPN-HD: Baseball Tonight (7 p.m.), MLB: Cubs at Mets (8 p.m.), SportsCenter (11 p.m.)

First, there's Spider Man 2 at 8 p.m., followed by The Governor and his Terminator 3: Rise of the Machines at 10:15 p.m. I haven't seen either one, so you're on your own tonight (though the links above to the Internet Movie Database should prove helpful). Here are some other HDTV programs showing on selected networks today:ABC: Bandits (8 p.m.)CBS: Without a Trace (9 p.m.)NBC: Law & Order: Trial by Jury (8 p.m.), Law & Order (9 p.m.), Law & Order: Criminal Intent (10 p.m.)ESPN-HD: SportsCenter (11 p.m.)

What we're watching and why: If it's Friday night, it must be boxing (or is that Saturday night?). In any case, HDnet takes you to the Manhattan Center, where you can watch the "explosive power" of light heavyweight Curtis Stevens and super middleweight "rising star" Jaidon Codrington. The fights begin at 9:30 p.m. I watch boxing to see people beat the hell out of each other. If you want analysis, please see the Yahoo boxing news. Here are some other HDTV programs showing on selected networks today:ABC: 8 Simple Rules (8 p.m.), Hope & Faith (8:30 and 9 p.m.), Less Than Perfect (9:30 p.m.)CBS: Veronica Mars (8 p.m.), Numbers (10 p.m.)NBC: Crossing Jordan (10 p.m.), The Tonight Show (11:35 p.m.)Fox: Arrested Development (8, 8:30, 9, 9:30 p.m.)WB: What I Like About You (8 p.m.), Reba (9 p.m.)ESPN-HD: NFL Live (4 p.m.), SportsCenter (11 p.m.)

What we're watching and why: At first I didn't like this film, but then the third or fourth time I watched  it something magnetic drew me in. I'm referring to "Shawshank Redemption," which is showing in high definition tonight. I've only watched it on TV and DVD, so I imagine some of the scenes, especially the last one on the beach, are beautiful. And HD probably makes the prison look worse than I had imagined. You can catch the movie at 8 p.m. and 12:15 a.m. on HDNet Movies. Here are some other HDTV programs showing on selected networks today:CBS: CSI (9 p.m.), Without a Trace (10 p.m.)NBC: Joey (8 p.m.), Will & Grace (8:30 p.m.), ER (10 p.m.), The Tonight Show (11:35 p.m.)Fox: The O.C.      What we're watching and why: Two baseball games in HD on the same day? Can it be so?  Happily, it is, if you get both ESPN-HD and ESPN 2-HD. The New York Yankees, which are 3.5 games back from the AL East leader Boston, take on the Cleveland Indians, which are 14 games back from the Chicago White Sox in the AL Central division. The game starts at 7 p.m. on ESPN-HD. Later, at 10 p.m. on ESPN 2-HD, the Baltimore Orioles, which are 9.5 games back in the AL East, play the L.A. Angels, which lead the AL West with a 61-45 record. Here are some other HDTV programs showing on selected networks today:ABC: Lost (10 p.m.)CBS: King of Queens (9:30 p.m.), CSI: NY (10 p.m.)NBC: Law & Order (9 and 10 p.m.), The Tonight Show (11:35 p.m.)Fox: The Inside (9 p.m.)UPN: Veronica Mars (9 p.m.)WB: One Tree Hill (8 p.m.), Smallville (9  p.m.)ESPN-HD: NFL Live (4 p.m.), MLB: NYY at Cleveland (7 p.m.), Baseball Tonight (10 p.m.), SportsCenter (11 p.m.)ESPN 2-HD: MLB: Orioles at Angels (10 p.m.)

What we're watching and why: When I was getting ready to make my first trip to Europe in 1996, my friend and traveling companion drilled into my mind: Rick Steves, Rick Steves. He was the international travel guru, especially for bargain trips, I was told. So I held to the advice of both my friend and Steves and enjoyed a nice trip throughout Europe. Now you can see tonight's premiere of Rick traveling in "Belgium: Bruges and Brussels" in high def. Rick Steves' Europe is on HDNet at 8:30 and 11:30 p.m.Here are the HDTV programs showing on some selected networks today:ABC: My Wife and Kids (8 p.m.), Rodney (8:30 p.m.)CBS: NCIS (8 p.m.)NBC: Law & Order: Special Victims Unit (10 p.m.), The Tonight Show (11:35 p.m.)Fox: House (9 p.m.)WB: Gilmore Girls (8 and 9 p.m.)ESPN-HD: NFL Live (4 p.m.), Tilt (10 p.m.), SportsCenter (11 p.m.)
