The EVO 2017 championship -- which is the premier, annual tournament for fighting games -- took place this weekend. The event culminated in the Street Fighter V finals, which saw Japanese god Tokido battle through the loser's bracket with his signature Akuma to defeat American Karin main Punk and take this year's title. That wasn't all the crowd had to be hyped about, though, with Capcom using the occasion to reveal the next SFV DLC character and first addition from the Final Fight franchise: Comically oversized brawler Abigail.

  • Capcom puts apps on sale, releases new characters for Street Fighter IV

Capcom has introduced two new characters to the iOS version of Street Fighter IV (subtitled Volt), so fighters now can jump into the ring with Yun and Fei Long, making the character total on the game an impressive 22. The company has also dropped the price. It's usually $6.99, but until next week, it'll be available for $2.99, so grab it if you haven't yet. The company also has released a new iOS title called Street Fighter Collection, which includes three editions of Street Fighter II: the original, champion and the hyper-fighting edition. You may have already bought these through Capcom Arcade, but this is a standalone version outside of Capcom's big meta-app. And finally, the standalone version of Final Fight (also included in Capcom Arcade) is on sale for 99 cents. There's no real reason for that one, apparently Capcom just wanted to offer up one of its games for a buck. We'll take it!

Our favorite Final Fight character, beyond a doubt, is Poison. It would take something really special to outshine Mike Haggar, but Poison does. Even though she was just one of the basic grunt enemies, her hypersexualized appearance and random flipping made her memorable among the countless Axls, Dugs, and Two.P's.Later, when we learned about Capcom's biographical information about the character, she became even more memorable. REFLECT's Masauzi Yoshizawa, a more active Poison fan, sculpted an amazing figurine of the character last year and made it available as a garage kit. Now it's being released as a preassembled, prepainted model more suitable for our useless hands, gnarled from years of unending punch combos. NCSX is selling this 1/6 scale figure for $68. OH, MY WALLET.Oh, and of course we couldn't use the word "Poison" in a post without embedding a certain something after the break.

When we saw this desktop wallpaper of Final Fight's most shirtless protagonist, Mike Haggar, piledriving a shark, we knew we had to post it. We also set it as our own wallpaper, then resized it and set it as our phone wallpaper. We've currently got an order pending at the printer's for our Haggar-piledriving-a-shark flag, which we plan to display proudly outside our home, as a sign of allegiance. To Haggar piledriving a shark. We think we've found the original sketch by Junkboy, but we don't know who did the awesome coloring. Our Google search, however, did yield another person's celebration of Haggar piledriving a shark: a plan to decorate an Xbox 360 joystick with the image.

Welcome to our weekly feature, Virtually Overlooked, wherein we talk about games that aren't on the Virtual Console yet, but should be. Call it a retro-speculative.What do you get when you add up one part Double Dragon, one part Final Fight, and one part River City Ransom? We have no idea how to do that equation-- it seems like three unquantifiable things. Three games, we guess? Is that right? In an unrelated topic, Mighty Final Fight for the NES is pretty great.

The internet has made it easy to find cheats for games, but we miss the tips pages from game magazines, when the discovery of a new code could inspire you to go back to an old game. These codes aren't exactly new, but oldness is the essence of the Virtual Console! We're bringing back the classic codes every week on The VC Advantage.China Warrior (TG16)Access the Debug Menu: Hold Run and Select to reset the game. When the title screen appears, let go of Run and hit up. Then let go of Select and press up, up, up, right, right, right, right, right, right, down, down, left, left. (up x 3, rght x 6, down x 2, left x 2). You can now make yourself invulnerable and select your level! You know, if you want to see the end of China Warrior. You can also make the enemies invulnerable for some reason!Streets of Rage (Genesis)Level Select Menu: Similar to the Debug menu in China Warrior, you can access secret options in Streets of Rage to change your level and number of lives. At the menu, hold A, B, C, and right on the second controller, then select "Options" with player 1. You'll be able to choose exactly which street will receive your rage. More Continues: At the title screen, press left, left, B, B, B, C, C, C.Final Fight (SNES)Option Menu: At the title screen, hold L and press Start. You'll be taken to a menu that lets you change difficulty settings, number of lives, and point values for extra lives. Most importantly, you can listen to "OH! MY CAR" over and over again. It's #39 on the sound player. Unfortunately, there's no code to give Haggar a shirt. Haggar was programmed to reject all attempts to clothe him!

  • Don't buy these Virtual Console games

Aeropause's Steven Munn has compiled a list of potential Virtual Console games for suckers. These are all games that have superior versions that could show up on the Virtual Console, or, in the case of Street Fighter II, superior versions that already have shown up. Even without taking the arcade versions into consideration, there's still one more SNES Street Fighter II that could come out, so can you ever feel confident about buying one? We take issue with a couple of the items on the list. Munn recommends against buying Super Mario Bros., because buying it later as part of Super Mario All-Stars with Super Mario World will be cheaper. We disagree, only because we think the NES version is the definitive version of that game. Same with Ninja Gaiden Trilogy: should Tecmo ever decide to release the SNES compilation on the VC, it will be cheaper than buying all three NES games. However, those SNES remakes are a mess of barely-upgraded graphics and ruined music. The article does raise a good point, however. Why should we be expected to pay over and over again for inferior versions of the same game, when the best versions exist and can easily be ported? We're thinking of arcade games, here.

Looking at the Virtual Console releases has taught us one thing: if violent games really did create violent people, we'd all be fighting in the streets. The VC is packed with shooters and brawlers, but hey, that's how we roll, retro style. Not that we don't appreciate platformers, puzzles, and RPGs, mind you. We just really like anything with "up" in the description. We're not picky when it comes to choosing between beating 'em up, or shooting 'em up.This week's batch: Battle Lode Runner -- TurboGrafx -- 600 Wii points Final Fight -- SNES -- 800 Wii points Mighty Bomb Jack -- NES -- 500 Wii points

We're jealous of the Japanese Virtual Console selection already. It's even worse now that we've seen the newly-announced games for April. There is some really great stuff coming out next month-- at least it means there's a chance we'll get it at some point. The new games include awesome selections like Final Fight (SNES), Puyo Puyo Tsuu (Genesis), Punch-Out!! (NES), and Star Fox 64 (N64). Really, the whole list is packed with awesomeness. Of special interest to us: Ninja Gaiden (NES), which we pretty much don't need to say anything about, because who hasn't played Ninja Gaiden, and Air Zonk, the futuristic Bonk spinoff that exemplifies the term "cute-'em-up".

  • Final Fight and Street Fighter II Turbo coming to Virtual Console

Capcom will be bringing two more of their vintage SNES titles to the Virtual Console sometime soon as Final Fight and Street Fighter II Turbo have popped up on the ESRB list of recently cleared titles. As Super Nintendo games, both of these arcade classics are classically gimped -- the technical term used for when something is downgraded. The SNES edition of Final Fight, while technically impressive for its time, goes above and beyond the call of duty when it comes to killing the magic. Not only did Final Fight on the SNES drop the two-player action that made it a hit in the first place, but also the red-clothed karate champ, Guy. Sure, you're playing it for Haggar anyways, but do you really want to be stuck with Cody? You also get a dose of censorship as everyone's favorite video game transsexual, Poison, is nowhere to be found.Street Fighter II Turbo (or Hyper Fighting as us humans call it) isn't that bad, but smaller sprites, a lack of online play and limited controller options on the Wii make it a hard sell. We love us some Zangief, but we don't see us pulling off our favorite combos on the classic controller. [Via Wii Fanboy]

  • Here come two new VC challengers from Capcom

Two superb Capcom fighting games are headed to the Virtual Console. Final Fight and the inevitable Street Fighter II Turbo Hyper Fighting have been spotted on the ESRB's list of rated Wii games. The SNES version of Final Fight lacks co-op play and Guy, but has plenty of "Oh! My car" to satisfy us. Street Fighter II Turbo is just like Street Fighter II, but sped-up, with more moves, more characters, and some bizarre changes made to the color scheme. We aren't sure why we're explaining this, because everyone in the world has played enough Street Fighter II to know the different versions.Oh, also new on the list was Tecmo's Mighty Bomb Jack. As obscure game advocates, we feel like we should be most excited about this one, but ... yeah, Final Fight is really, really awesome.[Via Siliconera]

  • Rumor: Capcom Studio 8 (Maximo) shut down

If the word of a former Capcom employee can be believed, it looks as if the publisher's shut down Capcom Studio 8, its U.S. development house, leaving 20 people out of a job.Studio 8 was best known for its Maximo remakes for the PS2--Maximo: Ghosts to Glory and Maximo vs. Army of Zin. Unfortunately, a poor performance with its latest retro retread, Final Fight: Streetwise, has apparently done the studio in with the higher-ups.According to GameSpot, this means the end of the Maximo series (and obviously the end of the Streetwise one). A Capcom rep only had this to say in response: "Capcom does not comment on day-to-day operations." If this story's true, we hope those kids can find a new employer, possibly at the Game Developers Conference that's currently taking place in CA.See also: Final Fight Streetwise interview Final Fight: Streetwise looking for a little respect FF:S loses respect with metascores in the 40s (for the PS2 and Xbox) BioWare opens Austin studio for new MMO [so bring resumes to GDC]
