A new promotion from Microsoft will offer prospective Xbox One owners a free game with the purchase of the next-gen console. Starting on Sunday, September 7, those that buy the system from a participating retailer in the U.S. will receive a free game of their choice, priced up to $60. The offer is applicable to Xbox One bundles as well, so those buying in to Microsoft's latest console can score two games with the Madden NFL 15 and Forza 5 bundles, for example, or opt to buy the console-plus-Kinect bundle instead. The free games must be disc-based as well, so digital-only games like Ubisoft's Valiant Hearts are off the table. Microsoft's Xbox One promotion runs through Saturday, September 13. • PS Vita gets (another) firmware update, free-to-play Montezuma Blitz available now

It's been barely a week since the last one, but Sony's now begun rolling out firmware version 1.67. It's another meaty download, weighing in at just under 100MB, although there's no detail on what it changes -- we're still exploring the update. Following the refresh, you can also pick up the PS Vita's latest free game, Montezuma Blitz, a Bejewelled-style puzzle game. However, it's not the first game to be offered up free on the Vita and some pesky in-game purchases taint that freebie status a little. Both the update and game are available to download on your Vita now.

  • EA giving free game to disgruntled APB buyers [Updated]

reddit_url = "http://massively.joystiq.com/2010/09/27/ea-giving-free-game-to-disgruntled-apb-buyers/"; Tweet Ticked off about the recent closure of Realtime Worlds' All Points Bulletin? Well you're not alone, and surprisingly enough it seems like Electronic Arts has heard your cries for justice. According to reports from CVG and SavyGamer, the publishing giant is ponying up a free download from the EA Store for customers who purchased APB via Valve's Steam digital distribution platform. The list of possible freebies is nothing to sneeze at either, as it includes BioWare darlings Mass Effect 2 and Dragon Age: Origins, as well as Spore, The Saboteur, Battlefield: Bad Company 2 and several more. There's currently no word on refunds or compensation for those who purchased the ill-fated urban crime MMOFPS from retail outlets or other digital shops. [Editor's Note: Having just gone through this process myself, I can tell you that it's easy and virtually painless. Simply visit www.ea.com, choose your country of origin, visit the support link in the upper right hand corner, and log into your EA account. Once that's done, click the "contact us/email us" button to create a new question to ask the EA support representatives. Select APB as the game in question and tell them that you own the game, where you bought it, and that you'd like to take advantage of their refund offer. The representative will ask you to make a list of games you'd like (pre-order titles are excluded and only games in the EA store are being offered) and that's it! Once you send your list, they'll give you a game (most likely your first choice) and you can download it using their instructions. ~Seraphina]

  • New PSP Go owners living in UK get free game download

Once more, with feeling! In an attempt to shore up consumer interest in the PSP Go, Sony is offering an attractive promotion to folks living in the UK: Anyone who buys the handheld, or has registered said handheld online after April 1, can download one of ten free noteworthy titles for the platform. All you have to do is download a "Promotion Theme" from the PlayStation Store before September 30 (and, um, live in the UK), and you'll be able to grab one of the following for free: Gran Turismo MotorStorm: Arctic Edge LittleBigPlanet Wipeout Pure Pursuit Force: Extreme Justice FIFA World Cup Need For Speed: Shift Avatar GTA Vice City Stories Assassin's Creed: Bloodlines

  • Age determines PSP Go buyers' free game option: LBP or Assassin's Creed

The "choice" between a free digital copy of LittleBigPlanet or Assassin's Creed: Bloodlines that new PSP Go owners will receive as part of an ongoing promotion is based on their ages. That's the key detail Joystiq confirmed after following up with Sony, which said, "The game sent to consumers is determined by age, once the user creates/logs into their PlayStation Network account." (Check out Sony's full statement after the break.) This means that if your PSN account indicates you as age 17 or older, you'll receive Assassin's Creed: Bloodlines -- whether you like it or not. Similarly, minors will be automatically booked for a trip to LittleBigPlanet. We'd say that consumers should cry foul for being robbed of a true choice, but new owners of the UMD-less PSP should probably get used to that feeling anyway. [Thanks to Talton W and everyone else!]

  • New PSP Go owners to receive a free copy of LittleBigPlanet or Assassin's Creed

This should make the PSP Go's price tag a bit easier to swallow. From now until March 21, new North American PSP Go owners that add a PlayStation Network to their systems will be eligible to receive a free game from the PlayStation Store: either Assassin's Creed Bloodlines or LittleBigPlanet PSP. After the registration process, SCEA will e-mail a special code that enables the free download. The promotion is similar to one launched by Sony Europe a few months ago. Unsurprisingly, early adopters are feeling left in the cold. DevilDawg90 commented on the PlayStation.Blog: "This is unfair to people like me who picked up the PSPGo day one. I had to pay 40 for LBP PSP! I have been supporting Sony and this is just a slap in face." Unfortunately DevilDawg, that's generally how technology works; it gets cheaper over time. In fact, the PSP Go is approaching affordable when considering the $50 discount Amazon.com is offering on it. At $200 with a free game, it's almost -- dare we say it? -- a good deal.

(We apologize in advance for the acidic nature of this post. Keep in mind, it's only directed towards people who managed to miss out on the first BioShock, but plan to pick up the sequel when it launches next week.) Hey there, you big, dumb animal. So, you're just going to skip right over BioShock and hop right into BioShock 2, huh? That's your master plan? Don't worry, we're sure you won't be at a loss when you're hurtled into Rapture without knowing jack about its rich history. We'll give you a quick refresher: Big Daddies are the guys in the diving suits, ADAM's the stuff that gives you super powers, and also, you're an idiot. Direct2Drive is offering you one chance at redemption -- the digital retailer is offering 10 percent off pre-orders for BioShock 2, and tossing in a free copy of BioShock with the reservation. Pick it up, and maybe we'll talk about reconciliation. Maybe. Update: As a number of our commenters have pointed out, the same deal is available on Steam as well. Coincidence? Or shrewd business tactic? You decide!

Who's Tex Murphy, you might ask? No, not the guy who created Bugs Bunny and Daffy Duck -- that's Tex Avery. Tex Murphy is the protagonist of a series of vintage adventure games, combining post-apocalyptic sci-fi with pulp detective stories. If that sounds intriguing to you, you can get the first two games in the series, Mean Streets and Martian Memorandum, for free from GOG.com! The games may not have aged gracefully, but the price certainly has. The site is offering the two Access Software adventures as a holiday gift, from now through December 24. Or, if you already bought those games from GOG, you can get a mysterious "alternative gift."

To celebrate the 20th anniversary of the Wallace & Gromit series, Telltale Games is offering Episode III of its Wallace & Gromit's Grand Adventures series, Muzzled!, for free! If you've been curious about how polite bumbling and cheese lust translate into game mechanics, now's your chance to find out. This offer applies to the PC version. The company is also marking the auspicious occasion by discounting the full season of the PC version to $20 (from $35), releasing the whole set on Xbox Live Arcade, taking orders for a Collector's DVD, and participating in a charity drive with the Wallace & Gromit Children's Foundation and Penny Arcade (to which your full-season purchase will contribute). Did you miss out on the Chronicles of Spellborn when it initially came out? Most likely you did. If it wasn't the freemium model that confused you, it was most likely the crazy-odd "Acclaim coins" system combined with "membership" that turned you off of the game.Well, as we mentioned before, Chronicles of Spellborn is facing some issues and tough times. The game is being re-developed into a free-to-play model while one arm of the Spellborn company is facing issues of bankruptcy. But not all is doom and gloom with the game itself. In fact, now couldn't be a better time to check out Spellborn. While the game is being re-developed and eventually re-launched, the current version is now completely free. All you need to do is go on, create an account, and download the game. That's it. So if you passed up the game before and you have some time on your hands, we recommend going on over and checking out Spellborn for the low, low price of free. It's fresh and quite different from your standard MMO.

  • Microsoft offering free XBLA game due to Live issues

Microsoft wants to say "sowwy" for the intermittent Xbox Live issues plaguing the service over the holiday, and they'd like to apologize with a free Xbox Live Arcade game. Major Nelson posts a letter from Marc Whitten, general manager of Xbox Live, which has a lot of customer service filler in it until the line about a free XBLA game for "all our Xbox Live members around the world" -- India is going to be psyched! The letter says specific details are forthcoming, so now we're left wondering if there'll be a couple options or if it's just gonna be free Frogger for everyone. If that's the case, then someone is gettin' thrown under a car! Get it? Sigh.[Thanks to everyone who sent this in]

Don't forget -- the clock is ticking and there's less than two days remaining to throw your comment-hat in the ring for a chance at Etrian Odyssey. Since it's all about the mathematics of the thing, yapping an extra time can only increase your chances (but you have to get everyone else to stay away, so get creative). Also, many of the comments are packed with comedy, so they make for interesting morning reading.Remember -- comment there, not here, for your chance to win. Not that we don't love it when you talk to us. And if you're not the lucky winner, don't despair ... we may have a few more things around here to give away in the coming weeks.

BlueTorch Studios in partnership with BlueGill Flame have released the final version of Open Fire, a casual top down shooter similar to the Linux game Barrage. Open Fire, which has been created using Unity's game editing software, was the winner of Unity's Dashboard Widget Competition. Keeping with the theme of the game's widget beginnings, the developers plan to create a widget version of the game so that office workers can play while their boss isn't looking. Currently the game is available in both Universal Binary Mac and PC versions. One of the coolest features of the game is its online top ten leaderboard which you could, at the very least, consider a (weak) justification for spending so much time playing the damn thing! Must. reach. top. ten.

We know that fanboys like free stuff, so here's something that might provide you with a momentary diversion... especially if you're into puzzle games. PSP Collapse! looks to be one-part Tetris and one-part Bejeweled. According to the game's makers, "The goal of the game is to clear all the balls of the screen by clicking on matching colors. Once all the balls are cleared of the screen, you advance to the next level!" Sounds like some good, mindless fun! And for free, it's probably worth the download.
