This week's Virtual Console update for Europe is all about choice. Four games are on the block, and pretty much all they have in common is retro goodness. From pinball to pool to RPG, you can revel in whatever you like the best this weekend ... unless you like beat 'em ups or shooters, and the VC is already full of those. Breath of Fire II -- SNES -- 800 Wii points Devil's Crush -- TurboGrafx -- 600 Wii points Kirby's Ghost Trap -- SNES -- 800 Wii points Lunar Pool -- NES -- 500 Wii points So, campers, anything you feel like downloading this week?

It's strong women day for the European Virtual Console! As usual, the ladies are outnumbered (that's par for the gaming course), but today, at least they're present, and our girl Samus is even a star! Chun Li is pretty awesome in her own right, too. But it's not all about the ladies this weekend for you gamers -- though we'll risk saying that Metroid may be the best of this lot, since there are already other Street Fighter games available already (and hey, it's Metroid!). Metroid -- NES -- 500 Wii points Silent Debuggers -- Turbografx -- 600 Wii points Street Fighter II Turbo -- SNES -- 800 Wii points

It's an odd pairing for the weekend for European gamers -- the punk-influenced Air Zonk and the classically adorable Paper Mario! What do they both have in common? A light-hearted approach to gaming and solid offerings for their respective genres. That's something we can get behind. Air Zonk -- Turbografx -- 600 Wii points Paper Mario -- Nintendo 64 -- 1000 Wii points

Hope you're in the mood for sequels today, because if you're itching for a new retro title, that's what Nintendo's offering up, at least when it comes to Sega. A couple of today's titles were also released in the U.S. this week, which means you can check out the video wrap-up for a little game footage. Also, for some reason the format of the releases on the Nintendo Europe site seems to have changed, so let us know if these costs are not correct -- we're basing this off past VC pricing. Dragon Spirit -- TurboGrafx -- 600 Wii points Ecco: The Tides of Time -- Sega Mega Drive -- 800 Wii points Golden Axe II -- Sega Mega Drive -- 800 Wii points Sonic the Hedgehog 2 -- Sega Mega Drive -- 800 Wii points

Selecting a video for this week's spotlight was somewhat difficult ... because we managed to stumble across some of the weirdest videos we've seen in a while. Take a moment to think about the magnitude of that statement. Around here, we spend all day immersed in the fruits of Miyamoto's brain (and other Nintendo goodness), and yet these videos were extra weird.Hit the jump for the full array. And yes, we know there are even weirder videos out there. Please don't supply links; we're not sure our bruised brains could take it just now!

We can't ever get enough of Kirby around here. He's just so cute and puffy. So obviously, when we think Kirby, we think golf. Because, uh ... balls are round. Yep. And what goes well with golf? Commandos. Right. We don't get this week's pair of releases either, but hey ... maybe opposites really do attract. Bloody Wolf -- TurboGrafx -- 600 Wii points Kirby's Dream Course -- SNES -- 800 Wii points

    06.08.2007

At the very least, this is a great week for pricing on the Virtual Console -- all three of the games are near the lower end of the pricing scheme, and for gamers trying to collect 'em all (or at least, as many as they can!), that's usually good news. Don't think that limits the choices, however; this week, you can choose your poison -- puzzle, shooter, or ... uh ... Balloon Fight. It's fighting. With balloons. Which is, of course, awesome. Adventures of Lolo - NES - 500 Wii points Balloon Fight - NES - 500 Wii points Dead Moon - TurboGrafx - 600 Wii points

Look, we were required to make the ToeJam joke. It's a contractual obligation, and it's early on Friday morning. We can't be held responsible! In fact, that might even make a good game: IN A WORLD FILLED WITH TOEJAM GONE WILD, ONE MAN MUST STAND AGAINST THE TIDE. Yeah. That right there? That's why we write video game news and not actual video games. Here, we'll distract you from our failure with the bevy of (expensive) new Virtual Console releases available today in Europe: Kid Chameleon - Sega Mega Drive - 800 Wii points Streets of Rage II - Sega Mega Drive - 800 Wii points ToeJam & Earl in Panic on Funkotron - Sega Mega Drive - 800 Wii points World Sports Competition - TurboGrafx - 600 Wii points

Give us a second here -- we're going to gush for a moment over Super Mario Bros. 2, and burn with jealousy that we're not in Europe today. We would trade our weekend plans for a little face time with this classic, but it looks like we'll have to wait. Some nice choices available today on the Virtual Console -- let us know what sounds good to you!Today on the Virtual Console: Blazing Lazers -- TurboGrafx -- 600 Wii points Mach Rider -- NES -- 500 Wii points Super Mario Bros. 2 -- NES -- 500 Wii points

It's all well-known characters this week on the Virtual Console! Of course, readers in Europe and Australia already know this, because the games mysteriously turned up for download two days early! VC Wednesday just doesn't have the same ring to it, you know? This week on the VC: Donkey Kong Country 2: Diddy's Kong Quest - SNES - 800 Wii points Mario & Yoshi - NES - 500 Wii points Did you spring for either of these? Let us know in the comments!

This week, European gamers get a little variety with their Virtual Console releases. Whether you prefer a nice game of golf, or kicking ass in a dark forest, the VC has you covered. And all with only two games! The best part? Neither of them is particularly expensive.Today on the Virtual Console: NES Open Tournament Golf - NES - 500 points Ninja Spirit - TurboGrafx - 600 points

    05.04.2007

Four new games up this week on the VC, and despite the fact that three of them are from Sega's Mega Drive, Nintendo still manages a fair amount of diversity in this week's selection. By diversity, we mean that they don't all involve outer space or badassery ... well, okay, you got us. These games actually are about space and/or fighting, because what the Virtual Console really needed was more beatdowns. In space. Alex Kidd in the Enchanted Castle - Mega Drive - 800 Wii points Shockman - TurboGrafx - 600 Wii points Virtua Fighter 2 - 800 Wii points Wonder Boy in Monster World - 800 Wii points

Looking at the Virtual Console releases has taught us one thing: if violent games really did create violent people, we'd all be fighting in the streets. The VC is packed with shooters and brawlers, but hey, that's how we roll, retro style. Not that we don't appreciate platformers, puzzles, and RPGs, mind you. We just really like anything with "up" in the description. We're not picky when it comes to choosing between beating 'em up, or shooting 'em up.This week's batch: Battle Lode Runner -- TurboGrafx -- 600 Wii points Final Fight -- SNES -- 800 Wii points Mighty Bomb Jack -- NES -- 500 Wii points

This week, Nintendo's putting a little Star Fox action on the Virtual Console, but we're not calling it that. No, no, thanks to silly trademarks, it's Lylat Wars. Whatever name you use, it's still one of the greats among shooters on Nintendo systems, and it's a nice cap to all the other shooters they've released. It's no surprise they're only releasing one other title alongside this one. What is that game? Well, long before Brain Age, we had Donkey Kong Jr. Math to make math fun, and now you can have it on your Wii. Math and monkeys apes -- can there be anything better? Donkey Kong Jr. Math - NES - 500 Wii points Lylat Wars - N64 - 1000 Wii points

Well, if you just happen to be in Europe and are nursing an irrational hatred of Sega (hey, who knows?), then this is not the week for you. Just forget about the Virtual Console and go cycling through the countryside. If, on the other hand, you happen to be a big Sega fan, then rejoice! This one's for you, cause it's all about the Mega Drive.Out today on the VC:Sonic Spinball -- 800 Wii pointsThe Story of Thor -- 800 Wii pointsVectorman -- 800 Wii pointsWill you be dropping large blocks of Wii points on any of these, or will you take a pass?

We want to go ahead and get this out of the way: this week, there are two other VC games released in Europe that aren't Punch-Out!!, so try to at least notice them. Do your best. We know it will be hard, what with the siren song of boxing dancing before you, within your reach. So who's buying? Another Friday means another week of Virtual Console releases for those of you in Europe. Sadly, you only get two different titles to download, but they're pretty darn good titles at that. Also, you guys can rest easy as you get one more VC game than those blokes down under. Here's the deets: The Legend of Zelda: Link to the Past - SNES - 1 player - 800 Wii Points Castlevania - NES - 1 player - 500 Wii Points Australians will only be able to download Link to the Past this week. Do you plan on giving any of these a download?Update: Fried brain = typos aplenty. Sorry about that.

Another week and another round of old school games for your weekend enjoyment. This time, there's some variety, so we'll hope that everyone who is so inclined can find something worth playing. As a special bonus, they're all toward the lower end of Virtual Console pricing, which isn't bad, either. Any of these tickle your proverbial fancy? Ice Climber (NES) -- 500 Wii points Splatterhouse (TurboGrafx) -- 600 Wii points Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles (NES) -- 500 Wii points

It's all about destruction this week in Europe on the Virtual Console. Either you're blasting space dudes, wrecking ghosts and perhaps a few ghouls, or perhaps yourself while playing Double Dungeons ... either way, something is going to die. And people say gaming isn't exciting anymore! This week on the VC in Europe: Double Dungeons (600 Wii points) -- TurboGrafx Galaga (500 Wii points) -- NES Super Ghouls n' Ghosts (800 Wii points) -- SNES
