  • Living on lava: that's hot

As much as we do really hate to quote Paris Hilton, that is pretty hot. Chris Jensen at GameAlmighty has an entertaining and interesting story up about how so many games feature a lava level, have villain's lairs built around lava, or just feel the need to put molten rock in there somewhere. To quote from the article, "...have you ever stopped to consider what it must have been like to build a castle or dungeon near or on a river of lava? It breaks every rule in the OSHA handbook, I'm sure."He breaks down the difficulties on building things around lava, let alone living near it. It takes a very hardy soul, and we admit that we would probably start thinking about moving if we had a lava flow nearby. Of course if we did, we could also just call in Tommy Lee Jones and Anne Heche to save the day. If any knows how to corral lava and work with it, it's those two.

More Miis than you can shake a stick at in this virtual onslaught of avatars. Would it be annoying or funny if we actually made sounds like that in real life if we walked ... nay, paraded around town? We can only imagine that it would get extremely boring after awhile. Plop, plop, plop.No one knows what these Miis are marching for, but let us all hope that it's for a good cause. If these Miis turn evil, there will be no stopping them. Miis rampaging in the streets, wrist straps torn off left and right and being used to garrote people, mass hysteria. And Joystiq, for one, welcome our new Mii overlords. We'd like to remind them as a trusted gaming website, we can be helpful in rounding up others to toil in their plastic, shiny utopias.

Reader Chris emailed this to me-- he and his guildmates in Gnomeburgers on Suramar-H were running around doing the Valentine's Day quests together. One of them, an Orc named Gruulok, punched out a few lines of Orc poetry, and they are hilarious. (Yes, I know the image to the right is a Night Elf, not an Orc, but didn't you ever learn that Love is blind?)Sure, you might think that Orcs aren't very good at poetry, but I've heard my own Orc speak a few lines himself-- something about coming from the Orcs, eating with spoons and forks, and he loves to eat his pork. Gruulok's poetry is perhaps the best love poetry ever written in... well, I'm not quite sure what language this is. Orcish? If you're feeling a little Hordie (get it?) this evening, feel free to share these lines with your sweetie, and have a great Valentine's Day.Tru Ork luv leevez skarz an brewzez, an eben browken nowzez, but vilent luv iz much mor fun den duzenz o steenky rowzez. Wen hartz brake an teerz duz fawl, datz wen tru luv endzez, but watch yerz bak cuz Orky gurlz nowz how ta take de vengenz.

Remember the cute, yet scary DS kitty? That little Lite-playing furball has been turning up all over, and the site where the picture originated features several other examples of adorable kitty antics. Unfortunately, it looks like this is the only Nintendo-themed set, but we have high hopes that kitty will someday again be tempted by the DS ... or that the owner will decide to encourage more pictures.

Proving that Joystiq readers are the best readers out there, we're continuing to get tons of great entries for our Lost Planet Photochop contest. We had over 100 come in since we announced yesterday's winners, and we've selected two for today. We went a bit artsy for these, both of which feature unique takes on Capcom's game cover. The Lost Relativity entry comes from Au (that dude is golden ... get it? Please, someone slap us) and has the added bonus of making us lose all sense of balance and equilibrium if we stare at it long enough. Shouldn't any real game have that ability? Nice work, Goldfinger.Check out the second winner after the jump, and find out all about the contest if you don't know already. If you've entered and haven't won yet, keep it up. We're really impressed by what everyone has been submitting, and picking two winners each night ain't easy.

  • Three funny quickies from WoW Lj

Three quickies from the WoW Livejournal that I found chuckleworthy today:How many GM swords do you see in the picture of the AV loading entrance to the right? I'm a slacker (I haven't done any serious PVP grinding yet), so I haven't gotten mine, but it looks like everyone else is picking up epics aplenty thanks to the new honor system. I'm sure there's a few dual wielding warriors and a few rogues in there, but still-- that's a lot of Grand Marshal blades (and are those the shoulders, too?).I'm still not convinced, however, that they should raise honor prices. Maybe Blizzard should just come up with some new kinds of swords to buy. From the forum sig of a dwarf pally: I'm a little pally short and stout,Here's my hammer, here's my mount. When I see a horde I scream and shout,Pop on ma bubble and hearthstone out. And last but not least, I bet they do. And I bet they play Alliance, too.

  • More Wii titles we'll never see

Adding more titles to the list of games we'll never see on the Wii, Valleywag has six additional titles that you probably won't be seeing on gaming shelves near you. Our favorite is the lone black and white cover that just says Amish Speedway. The mind reels with what else that game could hold. Cow milking contests? Barn raising competitions? Bring it on. As innovative as the Wii is, we need to start seeing some truly unique games for it. Wii's Waldo actually looks like a fun title, call us crazy. Keep the wheels turning, game developers. If you code it, Wii will buy it (sorry, couldn't resist).

This and other gems are what you get out of the third installment of Street Fighter: The Later Years. It's a brilliant ongoing series at CollegeHumor.com that follows the lives of everyone's favorite Street Fighter characters, years after the game has come and gone. This is the sort of thing we'd like to see on G4, or any sort of video gaming channel. Toss in this, some Red vs. Blue, some in-game feed, game guides, This Spartan Life, a World of Warcraft show, and some Major League Gaming, and you've got yourself something people will watch.Of course, we need to cram a Joystiq show in there somewhere. Video is after the jump. Give it a whirl, and brace yourself for Christmas. Note, if the video isn't embedded for some reason, like CollegeHumor.com's code not being up to snuff, then click the image above or here for the vid.

It was only a matter of time. We bow our heads in a moment of silence for the first Nintendo Wii fatality. Is this a wakeup call to the industry? DO YOU HEAR THE CALL? Seriously, they joke on the site that Fox News will see this and think its real. We're pretty sure that somewhere, somehow, someone is already believing it. Wait for the backlash to hit, probably spearheaded by everyone's favorite political gamehater, He Who Shall Not Be Named. In fact, let's declare a moratorium on him in the news, unless something spectacular happens, for all of 2007. Check out the video after the jump, and use your Wiis carefully out there, folks.

  • Belkin TuneTalk ships with FauxPod

If you happen to find a Belkin TuneTalk Stereo under the menorah this week or under the tree next week, you might be a bit surprised when you open it, as I was -- for a moment I thought the Belkin-elves had mistakenly slipped a test iPod into the packaging, or possibly that my wife had connected hers to the TuneTalk while I wasn't looking. After the moment of mystery cleared, I was mildly impressed with the quality of the cardboard "FauxPod" that Belkin put in the package; presumably this is to let you know exactly where you can stick your TuneTalk. It's still a waste of space and paper, but at least it's an attractive one.[Not to keep you guessing: the real iPod is on the left, turned off.]

Today's vid is from last night's Video Game Awards on Spike TV. Granted, the awards themselves were pretty lackluster and boring, but this motion capture skit was one of the funniest things from the whole show. It's about time we learned about the more glamorous jobs in the industry, like this guy's. Check it out after the jump. Say what you will, but the guy has balls (hey, you saw that one coming a million miles away).

The "great and esteemed Ludwig" (his words, not mine) stumbled across this video today, and of course felt the need to validate his existence by immediately sending it to me. Though quite old (2003), the hilariously dubbed montage of several Nintendo classics has awesome to spare. Watch! And be merry.(A small warning: this is perhaps NSFW, due to a bit of profanity in the first few seconds.)

You've heard the stories. Seen it on the news. Nintendo Wii consoles, on a rampage. Decimating joints, impaling innocent television screens, and taking candy from babies. We here at Nintendo Wii Fanboy place your safety at the very tippy-top of our list (but right below Twilight Princess), and thus, we'd like you to peruse this new and improved safety catalog for the Wii.Some things on this list were obvious, like not skydiving with the Wii and attempting to use it as a parachute. But did you know that the Wii cannot toast bread? Fooled the hell out of us. We beg of you: for your own safety, take a glance at these helpful pictures. The more you know.[via GameBrink; thanks to all those that sent this in!]

  • Better Together at Amazon: Marmite yeast extract and .Mac?

Amazon must be testing some new accessory recommendation algorithms, as they have really branched out on this one: Reg Hardware in the UK has a story about Amazon UK's engine recommending Marmite, a popular sandwich-topping yeast extract in England, with a .Mac subscription. While I don't recommend spreading any Marmite on your .Mac anytime soon, I can see a connection between these two (im)perfect strangers via a former Marmite ad campaign slogan: "you'll love it or hate it." Nutrition facts aside, that seems to describe .Mac in a nutshell these days.No word on how soon this dynamic combo is shipping, nor how long this offer will last; "act now!"

"Smokey, if you pick up that Wii-mote, you're entering a world of pain."An enterprising guy at GameTrailers has put together the entire opening scene from The Big Lebowski using the Mii channel, machinima, special effects, some clever editing, and a whole lotta patience. Hopefully this is just one of the first Wii/Mii movies we'll see coming . Someone with even more patience and stamina could actually use the different mouths to animate full-on speaking parts. These guys changed the mouths up a bit, but even better animation will undoubtedly hit at some point.Check out the video after the jump, and mark it eight, dude.

  • Yes, the "Axe of Inappropriate Responses"

Yes, in case you're wondering, we did see this on Digg earlier today as well. It's a screenshot from the WoW Forums in which a player (from Syndicate on EU Ragnaros) posts announcing the death of his brother, another player who was well loved by some on the server. And then, of course (this is the WoW Forums, after all), a level one alt makes a response that's not quite the most conventional thing to say when you hear of someone's passing. Now, Joystiq thinks it means WoW players are desensitized and "sad." But as many people have said, on both Digg and Joystiq, I like to think that, seeing as he was a true WoW player, Nano wouldn't have minded at all. In fact, he probably would have /laughed right along with us.

  • The temporary art of Corpse Grafitti

    by

Grimmus on LJ points to this forum thread, and introduces me to a fad in the game that I have never heard about before: corpse graffiti. It's the art of leaving corpses (usually of the opposite faction if you're in a faction specific place like Orgrimmar) with meaningful names in strange places. It's fascinating to me that people came up with this idea, and it's genius at the same time. "Nerfmurlocs" in a murloc spawn area, "Nerffire" on top of a torch in a city, "Welcomemat" outside of a city, a female orc named "Mankirkswife" in the Barrens. The thread's got lots of great ones in it-- one guy says he even placed corpses of all the main characters from Lord of the Rings in Ironfroge.Do people actually do this? Just to check, I logged into my server and looked around the front areas of Org, SW, and IF, but couldn't find any interesting corpses. A Google search of corpse grafitti turns up nothing, and there are no screenshots at all in the thread-- you'd think people who made works of art like this would try to capture their genius. And while we're at it, exactly how long do corpses of logged out players stick around, anyway? I know it's more than a day, but I think it's less then a week, so this is a pretty temporary artform.Still, theoretical or not, I think it's a great idea, and I'd love to see it in practice sometime. In fact, maybe I'll log in right now, and place a corpse somewhere in the jungles in Stranglethorn Vale for you to find on your travels. The name? It'll be "Drlivingstone," I presume.

  • United Nations "Internet" Summit held sans internet

Do you lose any and all direction in your life if your internet goes down for more than 20 seconds or so? Sadly, the same goes for us, but imagine the hysteria that ensued when participants realized the United Nations "Internet" summit was completely devoid of web access. Amazingly enough, the one conference where free WiFi was all but guaranteed failed to deliver, as the techies working for the "luxury resort hotel on the Athenian Riveria" couldn't iron out the connectivity issues. The hotspot initially presented the dreaded "could not connect to the network" error, and after repeated troubleshooting efforts were completed in vain, conference organizers apparently gave up on ever finding a solution. So, are you rethinking that decision to pick up one of those snazzy 3G ExpressCards yet?

This video makes us sad because that $5/Hour game looks like it could be a real winner. Although for sheer enjoyability you'd have to go with Nuclear Holocaust. The Japanese do love their weird and wacky games, so don't be surprised when Airport Security actually makes it to a shelf near you. Video is embedded after the jump, and has one tiny NSFW scene. What are some real life activities that you'd love to see on the Wii?[Thanks Daniel]
