Although being in the presence of a quad-core laptop doesn't have the same allure it did just months ago, packin' a Core 2 Quad processor into a 2.35-inch thick enclosure still manages to get us all hot and bothered (literally, we mean). The latest mobile gaming rig to come equipped with such a workhorse is XtremeNotebooks' Xtreme 917V (yeah, a rebadge of Sager's NP9260), which also features a 17-inch display, dual NVIDIA GeForce Go 7950 GTX GPUs, a dual-layer DVD writer, multicard reader, integrated webcam / speakers, up to 4GB of DDR2 RAM, room for three 250GB hard drives, a dedicated GPU cooling solution, optional TV tuner, gigabit Ethernet, WiFi, and a whole host of ports to boot. Granted, this sucka can only chug along for 60 minutes or so on its 12-cell battery, tips the scales at close to 12 oh-so-solid pounds, and starts at $2,399, but we know there's still a few of you out there willing to give it some love.

Notebook Italia has turned up even more shots of Dell's new XPS M1730 laptop, from a variety of different angles. What's very clear from the new pictures is that this model has size "issues," so if you don't like chunky lappies, stay away. Still, those specifications -- 17-inch screen, Core 2 Extreme X7800 chip, GeForce 8700M -- do look mighty tasty. Ahh, decisions, decisions.[Thanks, dellfan24]

Good news for those waiting in tense anticipation for a confirmation on Eurocom's quad-core lappie: it's for real. Dubbed the D900C Phantom-X, this powerhouse will reportedly pack Intel's "newest line of quad-core processors," up to 750GB of internal HDD space, your choice of NVIDIA GPUs running in single or dual SLI, a Blu-ray optical drive, up to 4GB of DDR2 RAM, and a slew of ports including USB 2.0, FireWire, DVI, S-Video, a multicard reader, optical and analog audio in / out, and a gigabit Ethernet jack for good measure. 'Course, you'll also find integrated Bluetooth 2.0, 802.11a/b/g, stereo speakers, a built-in microphone, and an optional TV tuner that could certainly make you question the necessity of your desktop. So, you big spender you, go on and get your order in now and let the bragging commence -- if you've got the $2,999 it'll take for the base configuration, that is.[Thanks, Mark B.]

Those scouting a fresh laptop to get their game on with now have yet another option to consider, as Asus has just announced the A8Sr, which packs ATI's Mobility Radeon HD2400 among other niceties. Also inside will be an Intel Core 2 Duo T7500 / T7300 / T7100 processor, 14.1-inch widescreen panel, 802.11a/g/n support, optional Bluetooth 2.0+EDR, a total of five USB 2.0 ports, FireWire, VGA / DVI / S-Video out, a 56k modem, Ethernet, and a six-cell battery to boot. Unfortunately, there doesn't seem to be any definitive pricing details to go along with Asus' latest DirectX 10-capable machine, but those lusting after the almighty frame-per-second aren't likely to mind anyway.[Via FarEastGizmos]

Shortly after unveiling the Zieo N500-HD, Evesham is hitting back with a slightly more updated version for those lusting after a few more frames-per-second. The 17-inch Zieo NX600-HD looks to be aimed squarely at gamers, as the available 2.4GHz T7700 Core 2 Duo and 512MB NVIDIA GeForce Go 8700M GT provide all the FPS horsepower you'll (currently) need. Also packed within is a WUXGA panel, 2GB of DDR2 RAM, dual-layer DVD burner, a 56k modem, up to 250GB of SATA hard drive space, eight-cell Li-ion battery, 802.11a/b/g/n support, integrated multicard reader, built-in stereo speakers, gigabit Ethernet, and a smattering of ports including FireWire, USB 2.0, DVI, TV out, and an ExpressCard slot for good measure. Of course, such a well endowed machine won't come cheap (nor lightly), as this 8.7-pound beast will run you £1,399 ($2,813) before any of the highly desirable upgrades.[Via TechDigest]

We can just imagine the smiles creeping over the faces of FPS freaks everywhere as they dream about owning a laptop with twin 512MB NVIDIA GPUs, and thanks to Alienware's refreshed m9750, you can now replace those visions with an actual order. The newly revamped 17-inch machine still offers up a WXGA+ or WUXGA display, up to 400GB of internal HDD space in a RAID 0 array, Blu-ray support, and a plethora of connectivity options, but it now includes Intel's 2.33GHz Core 2 Duo and a delightful pair of 512MB NVIDIA GeForce Go 7950 GTX graphics cards for all the battery-drainin', high-rez gaming you can handle. The freshened up system is due to ship late next month, and while you can get your own for $2,099, the upgraded graphics rig alone will set you back another $600.

Shortly after revealing that a quad-core laptop chip was indeed in Intel's pipeline for 2008, the firm has decided to go public with even more laptop-based processor details over at Computex. Intel's executive vice president Sean Maloney had the honors of "unveiling" the 3-Series chipset family (formerly known as Bearlake), which will of course support DDR3 RAM, PCI Express 2.0, HDMI, and can come stocked with G33 / G35 Express integrated graphics. More importantly, the outfit formally introduced plans for an Intel Core 2 Extreme mobile processor that should be released in Q3 of this year. According to Mr. Maloney, the chip is targeted to be the company's "highest-performing mobile dual-core processor that still includes energy-saving power features for laptop designs." No word just yet on whether or not this CPU will cost more than the rest of your laptop components combined (but we wouldn't be surprised).[Via Laptoping]

We shouldn't all act surprised that Clevo of all companies is cranking out yet another desktop replacement that would likely burn through even the thickest jeans (and potent batteries) in no time flat, but the firm's 901C ups the ante over the previous rendition with a few notable hardware bumps. Coming just months after the already wicked 900C, this sucka includes your choice of Intel's Core 2 Duo or Core 2 Duo Extreme X6800 processors, a 17.1-inch WXGA / WSXGA+ display, up to 2GB of DDR2 RAM, NVIDIA's 512MB GeForce Go 7950GTX or the 8700M GT, room for a trio of SATA II drives hooked up in RAID, a full size keyboard with numeric pad, 12-cell battery, digital audio out, built-in microphone, four integrated speakers, and a seven-in-one card reader. Furthermore, you'll find ports for FireWire, USB 2.0, S-Video / VGA / DVI, gigabit Ethernet, Bluetooth, 802.11n WiFi, an integrated webcam, 56k modem, and a TV tuner to boot. Apparently, there's no word just yet surrounding price or availability, but we wouldn't count on this powerful 11.9-pounder to run you cheap.[Thanks, Bazald]

  • HP's HDX Pavilion 20-inch gaming notebook from more angles

Remember that 20-inch HP HDX Pavilion laptop from yesterday? Well, more shots of the massive gaming laptop have turned up from different angles to give us a better idea of how this top-end laptop looks. This new angle puts the HDX closer in style to the traditional laptop form factor than its main "inspiration," the Dell XPS M2010. Still, the sheer size of the screen coupled with the remote means that this is a laptop with one helluva identity crisis: is it best to think of it as a portable home entertainment system, or a maxed out machine for those with very wide laps? A capable gaming machine it may be, but we have a feeling this won't be the only area where it draws interest. Hopefully, as the unveiling of Santa Rosa nears, HP will grace us with an official press release and we'll be able to get a better idea of the HDX's currently unconfirmed specs.

It looks very much like HP is planning to release its first gaming laptop in the form of the 20-inch Pavilion HDX: the evidence being renderings which have appeared on electronista.com. Even though we've seen 20-inch monster laptops before, the HDX is quite a sight, with the extra width apparently being used to contain a Windows Media Center remote and a full size number pad. The launch date and pricing of the HDX isn't known, but the source suggests that it may be timed to coincide with the launch of the Santa Rosa Core 2 Duos which will be included in the HDX at 2.4GHz speeds, and possibly at an "factory-unclocked" frequency of 2.6GHz. This behemoth weighs in at a rather lean -- consider the competition -- 12-pounds, and "may" come with an 8800-series GeForce Go graphics card to grab those oh-so-elusive gaming PC credentials. Of course, this could all be one humongous fake, although with HP leaking like crazy in recent days, we're leaning on this being legit.[Thanks, Jonathon]

  • Zepto's Znote 6625WD does DX10, HSDPA, and HD DVD

Considering that Zepto isn't exactly "the name" in full-blown gaming laptops, we certainly hope this one won't turn out like ones prior, but the Znote 6625WD purportedly packs a plethora of lavish innards if it proves legitimate. The 15.4-inch machine is based around Intel's Santa Rosa, er, Centrino Pro platform, and sports a WSXGA resolution, Core 2 Duo processor, 1GB of RAM, Bluetooth 2.0, NVIDIA's 512MB GeForce Go 8600 graphics card, DirectX 10 support, an optional HD DVD writer, 802.11a/b/g/n, HSDPA compatibility, and to top things off, an HDMI output. The company will supposedly be taking customized orders in May to satisfy your wildest dreams, and while the bottom-end of the bunch could land at around "$1,100 to $1,200," we imagine that some of the aforementioned luxuries will ratchet that right on up.[Via Laptopical]

Sure, we've all heard those short-lived (or outright absurd) claims of a world's most powerful laptop, and the term "desktop replacement" has been around the block a few too many times, but a Taiwanese manufacturer is doing the not-so-unthinkable yet again. The Clevo D900c (which could likely be rebadged as a Sager 9260 and / or Pro-Star 9191D) is a 17-inch monster that packs quite a wallop under the presumably toasty hood, including an option for Intel's Core 2 Duo processors, dual 1GB NVIDIA GeForce Go 8800 graphics cards, up to 4GB of RAM, up to three hard drives in a RAID 0/1/5 array, 7.1-channel audio, built-in stereo speakers, the ability to house dual optical drives, integrated TV tuner, 1.3-megapixel webcam, and a flash card reader to boot. You'll also find a smorgasbord of ports and connectivity options, including WiFi, Bluetooth, FireWire, 56k modem, USB 2.0, and DVI / S-video outputs. Of course, with horsepower like this, we highly doubt the 12-cell Li-ion will last much over an hour (if that) under full strain, but we're fairly certain you won't be using this 11.9-pound beast solely on your lap much at all. We know you're wondering, so if you've been eying a mobile gaming rig and have around $2,700 (or much more for the juiced version) laying around, you can snag one sometime in the April / May timeframe.[Via NotebookReview, thanks Andrew]

  • Alienware "Special Edition" m5790 offers up overclocked Core 2 Duo

It seems that the "most powerful" laptop in Alienware's ever-growing lineup has already lost its crown, as the (somewhat) budget-friendly m5700-series has received a new member, and the "Special Edition" m5790 delivers a base price that won't elicit rage from the SO, but offers up an overclocked CPU option to satisfy your speed cravings nonetheless. Aside from the 17-inch display, 512MB of RAM, 60GB hard drive, NVIDIA GeForce Go 7600, gigabit Ethernet, 56k modem, Bluetooth, WiFi, and combo drive, the machine seems fairly vanilla, but if you cough up $800, you can get an overclocked 2.66GHz Intel T7600G Core 2 Duo processor to spice things up. Among the other upgrades that push the pricetag on this lower-end machine up into the clouds are a $200 UXGA screen, $430 for 2GB of DDR2 RAM, $270 for 200GB of HDD space, $600 for a built-in Blu-ray drive, and $350 for ATI's Mobility Radeon X1900. So if you're in the mood for seeing just how much self-control your mousing finger really has, surf on over to the read link and (try to) buy only what you want need.[Via TGDaily]

    01.08.2007

It looks like VoodooPC's still up to its old tricks despite now flying under the HP banner, trotting out its latest bit of laptop excess at CES. Packing admittedly "non-existent" battery life, the Voodoo Envy HW:201 should be more than adequate as a desktop replacement for all but the most demanding gamers, with a 20.1-inch display, AMD Turion 64 X2 dual-core processor, and your choice of 512MB GeForce Go 7950 GTX or Quadro FX 2500M graphics cards in single or SLI configurations. Further filling out the Envy's 18.75 x 13.5 x 1.9-inch frame are two hard drives providing up to 320GB of space (available in RAID 0, if you choose), along with built-in WiFi, Bluetooth, and a "theater audio system." While it's supposedly set to begin shipping today, the behemoth hasn't yet made an appearance on Voodoo's website, giving the majority of us a bit more time to pretend we can afford it.

  • DosPara's Prime Note Altair TB: a 14-inch laptop for low-end gaming

    10.24.2006

With a name like the Prime Note Altair TB, you'd think this new 14-incher would pack all kinds of swank. You'd be wrong, however, so wrong. This budget box is heading to DOSPARA shops in Japan courtesy of Third Wave Corp targeting the low-end gaming market, uh, if there is such a thing. As such, you get the yawntastic specs of a 1.3MHz Celeron M 350 proc, 40GB 5400RPM UltraATA disk, and DVD multi-drive coupled with a WXGA (1280x728) resolution on a glossy screen, up to 2GB of DDR2 RAM, and built-in ATI RADEON Xpress 200M graphics. Hell, it might just pull-off duty as your low-end, 5.3-pound portable gaming machine after all. And that low (for Japan) pre-order price of ¥87,580 or about $733 (sans OS) certainly helps the cause.[Via Impress]

  • Asus leaks four new laptops, with a little help from Lamborghini

    10.18.2006

Asus is reportedly set to release a bundle of new laptops in the not too distant future, with pics (but not many specs) of four new models cropping up on NotebookReview's forums. Two of the new units are pretty squarely aimed at gamers -- the G1P (seen above) and the G2P (check it after the break) -- each featuring color-coding on the most abused keys (W,A,S, and D) and an ominous glowing button beneath the touchpad (we don't know what it is, but we're compelled to press it). Most of the specs are just speculation at this point, though it appears that the G1P packs a 15.4-inch screen, with the the G2P upping that to a full 17 inches. Both will supposedly come with stylish matching backpacks and Logitech gaming mice, 'cause those travel mice we saw yesterday just won't cut it. Also on the radar is the ultra-portable and ultra-shiny S7Fm, with an 11-inch display and built-in webcam, as well as the Lamborghini-emblazoned Vx1 "Golden Edition," which actually has some concrete specs but only teases us with pics (also after the break). This model comes loaded with a T7400 2.16GHz processor, 2GB of RAM, a 160GB hard drive, and Nvidia 7400VX graphics with 128MB VRAM, not to mention a 15.1-inch SXGA display with a special "crystal level hardness LCD cover." Unfortunately, there's no indication from Asus as to when any of these will actually be released, though the retail manager kindly supplying the pics speculates that the Lamborghini model will come first -- sometime before Thanksgiving -- with the others likely to follow in the Spring of next year.[Thanks, Luis D.]

  • Rock's Pegasus 660 and Quaddra TX2 laptops for gamers

    06.30.2006

Yo, Rock just dropped two new low-to-mid range gamer laptops into the mix with their Pegasus 660 and Quaddra TX2 (pictured left-to-right, we think). The 6.8-pound Pegasus model brings a 15.4-inch, 1280 x 768 display, Intel Core Duo, nVidia GeForce Go 7600 graphics with 256MB onboard memory, 120GB disk, 2GB RAM, and even a silent mode which kills the fan and throttles back the CPU to a cool runnin' 1GHz. Not big enough, Jack? Then try on the Quaddra TX2 which packs in a 17-inch, 1680 x 1050 pixel, X-Glass anti-reflective screen, AMD Turion 64 X2 dual-core proc, Bluetooth, WiFi, 1.3 megapixel cam, and the same GeForce Go 7600 graphics card, disk and RAM squeezed into a 7.7-pound, 1.4-inch thick slab. The Pegasus 660 should pull £1,060/$1,924 while the TX2 will demand just a bit more at £1,175/$2,133. Both should begin shipping in the next few weeks. [Via Stuff]
