  • GTAIV delayed until 2008's second quarter

Take 2 Interactive just announced that Grand Theft Auto IV will be delayed until 2008's second fiscal quarter, to compensate for some development processes that have taken longer than anticipated. The release confirms that this is taking place for both consoles, so it should be expected than when a new firm date is announced, that the 360's will mirror the PS3's. There has been no word of what this means for the episodic content under development for the 360 version of the game, as it was initially scheduled for a second quarter release in 2008. While we are saddened that we won't be experiencing Rockstar North's grand opus this holiday, our wallets definitely feel the pressure being lifted, if only slightly. We'll have to wait and see how this affects Microsoft's projected game sales this holiday, as 2004 may still remain top dog with the absence of GTAIV in October.[Via Joystiq]

var digg_url = 'http://digg.com/gaming_news/GTA_IV_delayed_until_Q2_08_by_April'; Take Two just announced the highly anticipated (and that's being cautious) Grand Theft Auto IV will be delayed from its originally scheduled October release date until the second fiscal quarter of 2008, or between February and April of '08. Though no direct cause for the delay was cited, Take-Two Chairman Strauss Zelnick said "certain elements of development proved to be more time-intensive than expected."Additionally, due to the outstanding ratings problems (and surprising no one) they've also announced that Manhunt 2 would miss its planned release this fiscal year. As a result of these setbacks, they're expecting revenue of $950 million to $1 billion for the fiscal year ending Oct. 31; in June, they announced expected revenue of $1.2 billion to $1.25 billion for the year. The bad news: There goes Microsoft's holiday hat trick. The good news: More time to play the onslaught of great games this holiday season.[Update: Post troubles, go here to comment]

  • GTA IV gets delayed until second quarter '08

Wow, well this was unexpected. Reuters news service is reporting that GTA IV has been delayed until the second quarter of 2008 in order to polish up the title. After this announcement, Take-Two shares dropped fairly sharply as the market reacted to the significance of the news. Because GTA IV won't be coming out this year, Take-Two had to change their financial goals from a profit to a loss for this year -- never something investors like. The delay of one of the most significant games of the year will also have interesting repercussions across the industry as a whole. Though the fall/winter release schedule is pretty darn packed with titles already, GTA IV was easily one of the biggest and most anticipated games of the holiday season. The sudden hole it leaves in the October schedule will allow for some smaller titles to get more attention than they would have beforehand, which will make other game publishers quite happy. How about you guys? Would you prefer rough GTA IV in October, or a more polished GTA experience in 6-8 months?[Thanks Glenn!]

  • Rockstar to develop brand new franchise exclusively for PlayStation 3

When Sony passed on the exclusive rights to Grand Theft Auto 4, many saw it as a sign of insanity from the leadership camp. The latest episode of Spike TV's Game Head, however, reveals that perhaps they had a plan all along. SCEA president Jack Tretton pulled that curtain back for host Geoff Keighley, casually mentioning that Rockstar has made an exclusive agreement to bring "their next big franchise" to the PlayStation 3 and no, he's not talking about L.A. Noire.Shortly before the show hit the tubes, SCEA's director of 3rd party relations, Michael Shorrock, confirmed this statement on the official US PlayStation blog adding, "Rockstar really wanted to make a game that you can truly only do on PS3, harnessing the power of CELL and Blu-ray disc and this deal lets them do just that.. This is really a win-win situation for both companies."So what is it exactly? Sony has made an agreement with Rockstar to say no more concerning the deal nor the title involved. From a developer that has tackled everything from gang violence to ping pong, your guess is as good as ours.

  • No exclusive content for PS3 GTA IV, says Rockstar

In the "news that blows" category, a Rockstar spokesperson confirmed the absence of any exclusive content for the PS3 edition of GTA IV. In speaking with Games Radar, Rockstar spokesperson Hosi Simon claimed that if gamers want the "complete experience with the episodes" that they would be best served by the Xbox 360 version, because the PS3 edition will not have any exclusive content to call their own. We're betting Sony's Phil Harrison was on the cusp of telling fans something quite tasty awhile back, so we shouldn't be surprised if a reverse announcement comes out down the road. Seriously, in light of past exclusives falling by the wayside, it would be hard to believe anything is sacred in one camp alone.[Via Pro-G]

  • Only GTAIV on 360 is complete experience, says Rockstar

Speaking to Games Radar, Rockstar spokesperson Hosi Simon had some interesting comments regarding the Xbox 360 version of the upcoming Grand Theft Auto IV. When asked about the Xbox 360 exclusive episodes and whether or not the PS3 version would receive any similar perks, Simon replied, "not that I can think of." Simon elaborates that the games are identical, and that Rockstar does its best to make games that can be enjoyed on any console. "We're not like a pawn between these [hardware] companies," said Simon. That said, Simon admitted, "But I guess if you want the complete experience with the episodes, then yeah, you should buy the 360, I suppose."We must mention -- along with Joystiq -- that the term "exclusive" has become more and more loosely defined over the years. We have to wonder if the Playstation 3 will ever pick up the episodes as well. Whether or not this comes to pass, it will be interesting to see if the initial promise of exclusive downloadable content will make GTA fans pick one version over the other.[Via Joystiq]

  • Rockstar: Only GTA IV on Xbox has 'complete experience'

A Rockstar representative tells GamesRadar that there is no advantage to owning the PS3 version of Grand Theft Auto IV over Xbox 360. He says they are identical games, and then you can almost hear the slap, "But I guess if you want the complete experience with the episodes, then yeah, you should buy the 360, I suppose." See what $50 million will get those Xbox kids? But remember, Microsoft is still going to charge for the extra content, so it's not like the core game is any different."Will the episodes ever see the light of day on the PS3?" is the real question. The word "exclusive" in the video game industry is almost as flexible as Alanis Morissette's use of the word "ironic." Exclusive, timed exclusive ... ironic, coincidence -- who knows what words mean anymore. As long as Sony offers up some cash, we think they could get the episodes too -- you know, if they did that sort of thing.

With two recent announcements, plus the ill-fated Manhunt 2, it seems that Rockstar and parent company Take-Two really do have their eyes on our sleek little console. It seems likely that they're not done, either ... so what else do you think might be head our way? More ports, or perhaps something designed solely for the system? Dare we whisper about the possibility of some Grand Theft Auto title? After all, Table Tennis uses the same engine as GTAIV ....

  • Rumor: Sony may get extra GTAIV content after all

Coming from a recent interview with Phil Harrison, 1up was curious why Sony was letting exclusive downloadable content for Grand Theft Auto IV slip through their fingers. It seems that, perhaps, the PS3 will get their own content for the upcoming classic sandbox game. Phil responded thus: " ... we have a great relationship with Rockstar and we're actually working closely with them on a number of initiatives, so I do know some things that are going on, but I'm not able to share those with you now." Insert theories here.If we can think of anything, we'd imagine that Sony is trying to get the content for the 360 version over to the PS3 version either as standard Blu-ray extras on the game disc (so they aren't technically breaking the "exclusive downloadable content" clause or whatever), or that there is some more original material planned for the PS3 version down the road. What are your thoughts?[Thanks, Ciaran!]

In an email sent out to their faithful subscribers, Rockstar, under the guise of Liberty City's premier talk radio station, WKTT, wants to know what you think is wrong with the Americas. Whether it's the state of the war on terror, health care -- whatever it is, they want you to voice your opinion. The best of which, presumably, will wind up on one of the in-game radio stations found in the upcoming Grand Theft Auto 4.We plan on hitting up a bar or two tonight, stumbling into a late night pay phone and regaling WKTT with tales of botched price drops and non-games.[Thanks, B1gC72!]

  • GTAIV multiplayer details invoke feelings of friendship

We could blab about the single-player mode of Grand Theft Auto IV, but we've been kept in the dark about the multiplayer options for the game and finally found something. We're going to go ahead and detail them below, so enjoy. One multiplayer mode will require you to seek out your opponent and eliminate him. How would you find him in such a big city? He's got to get his crime ranking thing up to seven stars, then he'll pop up on your radar. After that, seek him out and destroy him. Like the Terminator. There are more modes to come, but that's all we were enlightened to for now. As for the single player mode, an in-game internet and cell phone will be integral to the game. Think ... Front Mission 3 with the pseudo-internet. You use the phone to order up more weapons, et cetera, so don't worry about running to a weapon shop while being chased. Call on the run! More details to come, we're sure.

If you're a true, obsessive fan of Grand Theft Auto, you probably pored over every single frame of the first trailer for GTA IV. Maybe you tried to spot some favorite returning character or treasured locale. But, if you're anything like us, after three hours of trailer gazing, your eye caught that stack of unpaid bills or the "Hers" towel that's gone unused since she left a few months ago, and you just got sick to your stomach. "What am I doing with my life!?" you might have exclaimed at the heavens, before, stricken with shame, you retired to your filthy kitchen to fetch another Hot Pocket. ... If you're anything like us.Good news! GameVideos has done the work for you this time with the new trailer "Looking for that Special Someone," saving us the shame of having to stare into the inky blackness of failure our live has become. Also, our cats just love Mark MacDonald.

After a pretty killer week for boxed game releases, the PSN is also doing its part to beef up the PlayStation argument. This week we have a game, a demo, a major trailer and some other accompanying fancies. No PS1 games, though. They've all been funneled into the Japanese PSN store. Not that we mind. We've got more than enough to keep us busy. Super Stardust HD is one of those games that popped up a couple of weeks ago yelling "I'm going to be amazing. Buy me." The full release list is as follows. Super Stardust HD ($7.99) Dynasty Warriors: Gundam demo (free) Grand Theft Auto IV trailer (free) I know who killed me film trailer (free) Superbad film trailer (free) License to Wed film trailer (free) The Invasion film trailer (free) Great stuff. As promised, Rockstar has just released a new trailer for Grand Theft Auto IV and it's bringing down the internet as we speak. This one features a ton of gameplay and new scenery, and honestly makes the game look a lot more interesting than the previous trailer and screenshots. As you can see, the trailer is embedded right above so check it out and let us know what you think. Does it tickle your sandbox crime fancy? Or does it leave you cold and uninterested like a body in a morgue?

The internet hasn't collapsed under the combined weight of millions of concurrent F5 keystrokes this time, so we can bring you the newest Grand Theft Auto IV trailer, titled "Looking for That Special Someone," without the need for torrents and other such nonsense. Tucked away safely after the break, watch as Niko Bellic hangs from helicopters, hangs from moving trunks, and just hangs out in general (with a gun of course). We're sure internet sleuths are already busy poring over the trailer frame by frame, but until they hand in their report, is their anything notable in this trailer? Us? We're fans of Niko's accent, it's adorable.Update: Rockstar just sent out some additional facts on the trailer. Facts like: All footage is captured in real-time on a next generation gaming console It's running on Rockstar's RAGE engine, also used in Table Tennis The game uses euphoria, a fully procedural animation package created by NaturalMotion The music -- titled "Arm In Arm (Shy Child Remix)" -- is by New York City-based band The Boggs Want to see a higher-res version? Well folks, the Grand Theft Auto IV trailer is up. You can either watch the tiny, poorly streamed version at Yahoo! Games, or you can watch the higher resolution trailer at Rockstar's website. Either way, expect to do a little waiting. As we suspected, the trailer gives a marginally closer look at some of the colorful characters we'll be seeing in Liberty City. We also get a deeper look at Niko, the main character. Sprinkled throughout are bits of action, like kicking in doors, hanging from helicopters, hanging on to the back of a speeding truck, and evading the newer, smarter police. All in all, the trailer is short, but definitely sweet. Alright, talk amongst yourselves.

Just so you know, the second trailer for Grand Theft Auto IV will be hitting the internet equivalent of the airwaves today at noon EDT. It will be available at the official GTAIV website as well as Xbox.com, and hopefully it will hit Xbox Live Marketplace on time too. Now that we've been introduced to the world of GTAIV, we're hoping to see at least a little gameplay. We wouldn't be surprised, however, if the second trailer is used mainly to introduce us to the other characters aside from Niko (the game's protagonist). As you sit there watching the minutes go by (this time without an oh-so-trendy countdown clock), you might as well check out our GTAIV gallery, which we've updated with an entire two new images. Yeah, we know. We spoil you.%Gallery-3451%
