Facebook built Instant Games as a cross-platform gaming experience that can run anywhere without the need to download anything extra. Taking the platform's nature into account, it seems pretty obvious that the social network plans to put it anywhere it can: the feature debuted on Messenger and the News Feed, and now it's making its way to Facebook Groups and the Lite app.

Facebook's Instant Games are about to add a cornerstone of the modern gaming experience, although it's not necessarily the one you'd hope for. The social site is adding support for in-app purchases to Instant Games on both Android and the web, letting you buy extra goodies (no doubt including a ton of in-game currency) in titles that don't require lengthy load times. The tools are available now, although game creators can only start submitting apps on May 7th.

Facebook is in the middle of a public relations nightmare, caused by reports that research firm Cambridge Analytica used its site to harvest data from 50 million user profiles. But, that's not stopping the company from talking up the potential of its platform, in this case as it pertains to gaming. As part of Facebook's GDC 2018 announcements, it revealed last week that any developer can now make Instant Games, thanks to new tools that let them create HTML5-based web titles for Messenger or the News Feed. Additionally, Facebook has made it easy for devs to build livestreaming features directly into their PC games, without any capture hardware or software required, in a clear attempt to challenge the likes of Twitch and Youtube.
Anyone can make Facebook Instant Games
Facebook's Instant Games technology hasn't exactly taken off (there are less than 200 games to date), but that's because it's been in closed testing. Now, it might have a chance to grow: Facebook has opened the Instant Games platform to all developers. Anyone can build HTML5-based web games designed to run in Messenger or your News Feed, whether you're on desktop or mobile. They'll have ways of making money from and promoting games, too, including ads (sorry, folks) and cross-promotional links.

That report that went around earlier this month was right on the money: Facebook really was working on more Messenger games. Today, the social network has launched its HTML5 cross-platform gaming experience called "Instant Games," along with 17 titles that include some familiar names like Pac-Man. Facebook is calling it "cross-platform" because you can play those games not just within the chat app, but also right in your News Feed. They even work on both mobile and the web without having to install additional apps.
It sounds like Facebook Messenger will soon have more games
Facebook's gaming aspirations are deeper than its Gameroom app and quick rounds of basketball, soccer (football to the rest of the world) and chess in Messenger. Zuckerberg and Co. are shopping a development kit to, well, third-party developers to bring more distractions to Facebook Messenger. The "Instant Games" toolset will launch later this month, according to a report from The Information.
