With this edition of the weekly Japanese hardware sales chart, Joystiq would like to encourage all of its American readers to have a blissful Labor Day weekend devoid of emotional trauma, nuclear apocalypse and above all, any sort of productivity. Joystiq also requests that readers forward this sentiment to their illiterate friends and colleagues.Though incorrectly thought of as a holiday meant to celebrate the birth of life, Labor Day really highlights the complete and utter loss of it. As a working man, woman or abducted child, you may feel that your employment has slowly encroached upon the things that really matter in this existence -- video games. We urge you to spend the next few days ignoring any and all emails, telephones and shrieks from significant others. Oh, and play something decent, would you? - DS Lite: 100,430 53,389 (34.71%) - Wii: 46,283 27,655 (37.40%) - PSP: 26,089 7,626 (22.62%) - PS3: 16,393 5,327 (24.53%) - PS2: 15,139 101 (0.66%) - Xbox 360: 2,044 401 (16.40%) - Game Boy Micro: 423 5 (1.20%) - GBA SP: 163 49 (23.11%) - Gamecube: 116 29 (20.00%) - GBA: 65 41 (170.83%) - DS Phat: 30 15 (100.00%)[Source: Media Create]See also: Previous Japanese hardware sales charts

Prepare to receive some contradicting memos this week if you're a member of the Nintendo Defense Force. The DS sales chart sandwich has returned, leaving NDF commanders confused as to whether they should attack or defend on the bulletin board battlefields. Simultaneously the best- and worst-selling system of the week, Nintendo's portable wonder demands response tactics that are both celebratory and derogatory. We'd recommend spinning your impending comment with references to "pincer tactics" and "trash compactors." - DS Lite: 153,819 6,794 (4.62%) - Wii: 73,938 8,818 (13.54%) - PSP: 33,715 1,568 (4.88%) - PS3: 21,720 399 (1.87%) - PS2: 15,240 2,695 (21.48%) - Xbox 360: 2,445 333 (15.77%) - Game Boy Micro: 418 52 (14.21%) - GBA SP: 212 74 (53.62%) - Gamecube: 145 14 (10.69%) - GBA: 24 8 (50%) - DS Phat: 15 165 (91.67%)[Source: Media Create]See also: Previous Japanese hardware sales chartsNote: Last week's sales charts were delayed due to a Japanese holiday. The above commercial always brings a smile to our horrifying "editorial we" amalgam of faces, reminding us that despite the abundance of oppressive red arrows this week, the people of Japan are still storming the stores to purchase gaming hardware. Said hardware tends to be the ubiquitous DS Lite, of course, but there was a time when the GBA enjoyed a much better view compared to its current position. When (if?) the DS Lite ever finds itself at the bottom, what magical device could possibly be at the top? - DS Lite: 135,729 14,765 (9.81%) - Wii: 61,498 15,671 (20.31%) - PSP: 33,886 1,182 (3.37%)- PS3: 24,289 4,540 (15.75%) - PS2: 12,784 1,027 (8.74%) - Xbox 360: 2,691 1,181 (30.50%) - Game Boy Micro: 413 150 (57.03%) - GBA SP: 228 -- 0 (0%) - DS Phat: 75 15 (16.67%) - Gamecube: 68 34 (33.33%)- GBA: 0 41 (100.00%)[Source: Media Create]See also: Previous Japanese hardware sales charts

Chased by a group of adorably deformed but club-wielding golfers, the PlayStation 3 has finally crossed the one million mark in Japan -- 1,017,689 systems have been sold. Everybody's Golf 5, or Hot Shots Golf 5 as your Western mind may recognize it, debuted in the second spot in the Japanese software sales chart with 152,379 copies sold. It was beaten only by a certain portly plumber's eighth party, which was attended by 264,953 people. The golf game helped push the PS3's sales up to 28,829 units, a high number when compared to those of recent weeks, but not so much when compared to the considerably cheaper competition. The Xbox 360 also saw a boost to slightly less abysmal sales, an event you can likely blame on the software chart's number seven. The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion broke into the listing with 40,168 copies sold. - DS Lite: 150,494 3,965 (2.57%) - Wii: 77,169 9,617 (11.08%) - PSP: 35,068 2,174 (6.61%)- PS3: 28,829 16,642 (136.56%) - PS2: 11,757 2,302 (16.37%) - Xbox 360: 3,872 1,208 (45.35%) - Game Boy Micro: 263 52 (16.51%) - GBA SP: 228 106 (86.89%) - Gamecube: 102 29 (22.14%) - DS Phat: 90 45 (100.00%)- GBA: 41 17 (70.83%)[Source: Media Create]See also: Previous Japanese hardware sales charts

With the arrival of each week's Japanese hardware sales chart usually comes an inescapable torrent of questions. And just when you thought things were going so well. This week's inescapably cataclysmic sales charts confirm what we've all suspected since 2004 -- the Nintendo DS is nothing more than a farcical fad. Microsoft may have waited until this week to deal with their Red Ring of Death problem, but Nintendo had best act faster to resolve their imminent Red Arrow of Debilitation plight. Even those with the most cursory of interests in hardware sales can see the deadly signs spelling out the end of Nintendo's touchy-feely technology: D-O-O-M. E.That bonus "E" is there for a reason, wonderfully capturing the sound emitted by surprised Nintendo executives experiencing a rude awakening. It's the sort of wake-up call that transpires when someone replaces your pillow with a crocodile on the same day you decided to wear your special salami pajamas (lovingly referred to as salamajamas). Time to pack your bags and go home, Nintendo.Okay, since you're already in Japan, just pack your bags. Pack your bags with demolished dreams and haunting regrets.- DS Lite: 157,435 6,453 (3.94%) - Wii: 73,919 8,337 (12.71%) - PSP: 38,305 5,321 (16.13%) - PS2: 16,316 4,354 (36.40%) - PS3: 11,914 2,333 (24.35%) - Xbox 360: 3,154 215 (6.38%) - Game Boy Micro: 377 93 (32.75%) - GBA SP: 179 49 (37.69%) - Gamecube: 111 29 (35.37%) - DS Phat: 45 15 (50.00%)- GBA: 16 16 (N/A%)[Source: Media Create]See also: Previous Japanese hardware sales charts

When does mere coincidence become conspiracy? It's an appropriate question to ask given the curious state of this week's Japanese hardware sales, which seem to hint at an unseen entity unfairly adjusting parameters and altering the accepted balance of things. Indeed, the original Nintendo DS seems to have been given life again -- 30 lives compared to last week's zero. Could Konami's recent announcement of side-scrolling shooter sequel, Contra 4, have played a part in all this? We'd share the answers with you... but that would be cheating. - DS Lite: 163,888 45,204 (38.09%) - Wii: 65,582 61 (0.09%) - PSP: 32,984 375 (1.12%) - PS2: 11,962 12 (0.10%) - PS3: 9,581 100 (1.05%) - Xbox 360: 3,369 4,214 (55.57%) - Game Boy Micro: 284 87 (23.45%) - GBA SP: 130 342 (72.46%) - Gamecube: 82 B 141 (63.23%) - DS Phat: 30 A 30 (N/A%) [Source: Media Create] Cheat-free chart after the break. And so, the Church of England vs. Sony saga at last seems to be inching towards a resolution. How did it ever turn into such a mess? The answer to that question, obtained only through ingenious hacking techniques, lies after the break (that place we put all the nonsense that has nothing to do with sales charts). The lesson to be learned, of course, is that when you're creating a work of fiction or designing a game, it's best to avoid any real locales. We're not particularly fond of traditional corporate meetings. As a platform for communication, we find that a meeting frequently fails on multiple fronts, particularly the one that requires human beings to spit verbs at each other within, well, spitting distance. We much prefer the impersonal touch of an electronic network, though this is often unsuitable when a matter is of particularly urgency. Keiji Inafune's recent distress regarding the Mega Man franchise's supposed inability to recoup its "next-gen" costs is indeed urgent, and in urgent need of a good collar grab and face slap. For the sake of the blue bomber, we endured an intense meeting with Capcom's own negative Nelly, the transcription of which can be found after the break (you know, that part where we put stuff that has nothing to do with the sales charts).- DS Lite: 127,461 16,248 (14.61%) - Wii: 58,644 6,451 (12.36%) - PSP: 26,097 1,408 (5.12%) - PS2: 11,311 430 (3.95%) - PS3: 9,627 968 (11.18%) - Xbox 360: 2,044 18 (0.89%) - Game Boy Micro: 407 21 (4.91%) - GBA SP: 288 42 (12.73%) - Gamecube: 256 20 (7.25%) - DS Phat: 81 55 (211.54%) - GBA: 17 16 (48.48%)[Source: Media Create]See also: Previous Japanese hardware sales charts

Lick your screen. Go on, do it. You'll find it to have a sort of artificial non-taste, with just a hint of static and dust. Incidentally, that's precisely what a DS sandwich tastes like, one freshly made from this week's Japanese sales charts. The sleeker DS Lite still reigns at the top while its older and comparatively obese sibling languishes at the bottom, slowly getting devoured by a seeping mustard menace. Which... would be the GBA, we guess. This paragraph doesn't make a lot of sense, we admit. - DS Lite: 111,213 52,572 (32.10%) - Wii: 52,193 351 (0.67%) - PSP: 27,505 6,928 (20.12%) - PS2: 10,881 467 (4.48%) - PS3: 8,659 180 (2.04%) - Xbox 360: 2,026 79 (3.75%) - Game Boy Micro: 428 20 (4.90%) - GBA SP: 330 13 (3.79%) - Gamecube: 276 39 (12.38%) - GBA: 33 15 (83.33%) - DS Phat: 26 13 (33.33%)If you'll cast your browser back in time to late February 2006, you'll note how the original DS was once the best selling device in Japan. Those were certainly crazier times, as evidenced by this snapshot of January. The PSP reigning supreme? Surely, you must have lost your mind! Hey, we did just see you lick a computer screen, Shirley. After a group of modders dug into the Halo 3 Beta code and seemingly discovered some embedded weapons and vehicles intended for the game's September release, we immediately set out to confirm the information for ourselves. Is there really a flamethrower hidden in there? Just what exactly is this "Chopper" vehicle? Depressingly, our frantic scratching through the code yielded no answers, only several bizarre items and unexpected discoveries. First item: This week's Japanese hardware sales chart. It's appearance in the code seems awfully contrived, but it's sure to be useful during intense fanboy debate!- DS Lite: 163,785 121,338 (42.56%)- Wii: 52,544 48,776 (48.14%)- PSP: 34,433 739 (2.10%) - PS2: 10,414 4,401 (29.71%) - PS3: 8,839 4,135 (31.87%) - Xbox 360: 2,105 1,100 (34.32%) - Game Boy Micro: 408 68 (20.00%) - GBA SP: 343 41 (13.58%) - Gamecube: 315 79 (20.05%) - DS Phat: 39 30 (43.48%) - GBA: 18 7 (63.64%)[Source: Media Create]See also: Previous Japanese hardware sales chartsRead on to see what else we found in the Halo 3 beta.

  • Japanese hardware sales, Apr. 30 - May 6: Huge hyperbole edition

    05.12.2007

Hyperbole OFF:This week brings a fairly interesting edition of the closely followed Japanese hardware sales charts, with some unusual movements occurring at the bottom of the list. The Gamecube receives a minor and mysterious boost, managing to overtake both the Game Boy Advance SP and its diminutive sibling. The less diminutive, but undeniably dim GBA also moves up -- the only direction it could go after last week.At the top, things are somewhat less interesting, almost bordering on cliché. The DS Lite remains an incredibly popular system, with the Wii staying above the 100,000 mark for the second week in a row. The PS2 and PS3 are still jostling for position while the Xbox 360 remains unmoved from its intractable spot. Not even Halo 3 can be relied on in Japan, though perhaps the sheer power of hyperbole will physically manifest and push it further up the charts. - DS Lite: 285,123 29,152 (11.39%)- Wii: 101,320 1,202 (1.17%)- PSP: 35,172 1,312 (3.87%) - PS2: 14,815 2,231 (17.73%) - PS3: 12,974 183 (1.43%) - Xbox 360: 3,205 43 (1.36%) - Gamecube: 394 227 (135.93%) - Game Boy Micro: 340 290 (46.03%) - GBA SP: 302 193 (38.99%) - DS Phat: 69 23 (25.00%) - GBA: 11 11 (N/A)[Source: Media Create]See also: Previous Japanese hardware sales charts

You love it as much as we love giving it, so here's our latest outing into the world of Japanese hardware sales. This month, you'll notice some things have changed up a bit. Like nothing. On the bright side, PS3 sales have increased. Sure, the increase is very small, but when you're dealing with small numbers to begin with, every little bit just seems a tad more significant. Without further ado, the numbers. DS Lite: 255,971 Wii: 102,522 PSP: 33,860 PS3: 12,791 PS2: 12,584 XBox 360: 3,162 What's this? The PS3 outsells the PS2? It's happened once before, we recall, but this may mean people are finally starting to phase out the old and save up for the new. Maybe not. It's tough to tell by a couple of weeklong charts. We'll keep you posted on sales as soon as the researchers give us the data.

Before your eyes glaze over at the sight of the Japanese hardware sales and your mind starts contemplating all the wonderful things you'll get up to this weekend, consider the unfortunate circumstance of today being Wednesday. Also, consider obtaining a better way of signaling the end of the week to yourself. Otherwise, you might find yourself sleeping in on a business day the next time a series of Japanese holidays, collectively known as Golden Week, delays the arrival of the weekly numbers beyond the usual Friday slot.Just in case, though, we'll be sure to inform you when it really is Friday. • How about some French hardware sales instead?

    04.30.2007

Week after week (give or take a week in between) we give you our Japanese hardware sales, thinking that's probably a fair estimate of the world's sales. Seems that's still true. The same trends hold true in France, also. What trends? We'll enlighten you after the numbers. Oh, by the way, these are the numbers for the entire first quarter of 2007 -- which kind of puts it in perspective. Kind of. DS - 260,000 Wii - 144,000 PS2 - 92,000 PSP - 90,000 PS3 - 81,000 360 - 43,000 The trends are as follows: Nintendo tops the charts and the PS2 beats out PS3. For the entire first quarter, might we say that these sales aren't that great for any system? If this were for the week or even month, we'd be surprised, but for the quarter? Not so much. About 12 weeks in three months -- so that's like 6,750 PS3's a week. Take it as you will, guys! But there you have it -- France.

And you firmly believe that any wound can be healed by the application of the correct type of cheese? Allow us to inform you then, that at least 50% of your current beliefs are wildly incorrect. What you see before you, on your monitor, in the section of the screen that displays this paragraph, is the significantly improved and undeniably elite version of the Japanese hardware sales charts!Harnessing the ludicrous power of HDMI 1.3, we've enhanced our presentation beyond the low-resolution limits of your imagination. You're bound to recoil in horror -- horror at how primitive our previous display method was, that is! Another week, another report on the status of our favorite consoles over in the land of the rising sun. What've we got to say? It's another bummer week for Sony. The Nintendo DS and the Wii have almost unbelievably consistent sales numbers every week -- we're assuming that's most of their supply. Microsoft is still in its usual place, but we know how the Japanese react to Western powers. DS-Lite: 172,359 Wii: 77,913 PSP: 29,459 PS2: 11,398 PS3: 11,000 XBox 360: 2,307 GBA SP: 860 GB Micro: 449 GameCube: 266 DS: 81 GBA: 55 We've got very little else to say. Another week, another ouch. It's probably going to hover at the same levels for a while, until big games hit. Or that price drop happens.
