There were many buttons typed to bring you this information, but it is a fate they gladly endure in order to keep you abreast of things abroad. This week's Japanese charts reveal that all is still well in the land of Nintendonia, where people waggle without care and enjoy the company of their portable money printers. But in the land of Sony, er, land, things are somewhat gloomy. Indeed, the PS3 will have to double its efforts -- which means the Xbox 360 had better start practicing some serious multiplication.- DS Lite: 133,325 22,480 (20.28%)- Wii: 75,759 23,176 (44.08%)- PSP: 24,850 6,653 (21.12%) - PS2: 12,872 1,362 (9.57%) - PS3: 11,948 2,572 (17.71%) - Xbox 360: 2,900 63 (2.13%) - GBA SP: 654 179 (21.49%) - Game Boy Micro: 617 105 (20.51%) - Gamecube: 167 88 (34.51%) - DS Phat: 146 56 (62.22%) - GBA: 26 14 (116.67%)[Source: Media Create]See also: Previous Japanese hardware sales chartsOh, and if you've been with us all day, there's one more thing worth mentioning...

Having recovered from the crushing disappointment that was Resident Evil: The Umbrella Chronicles and its complete and utter failure to incorporate a deranged Mary Poppins (equipped with bionic limbs and a strong desire to open her primary weapon inside zombie orifices), a great number of gamers may find themselves in a ponderous mood. Why, just looking at Resident Evil 4, how can one not be compelled to ask, "What happened to this glorious, gore-ious franchise?"What happened to slowly inching your way down a corridor, nearly paralyzed by the fear of how the next sudden camera angle might mangle your chances of survival? What happened to the constant interruptions provided by a vague health gauge that could only be accessed on another screen? Where did the dramatic exchanges between characters, so delightfully peppered with Jill sandwiches and Chris' blood, run off to? What happened to having your head ripped apart by an off-screen opponent, or struggling to shoot a dog because your highly trained S.T.A.R.S. agent has no idea how to aim a gun? What happened to inserting the crystal tiara into the cobalt iguana statue in order to unlock the underwater opera house? Thanks a lot, Capcom. Your recent meddling has completely ruined a wonderful franchise.- DS Lite: 110,845 30,948 (38.73%)- Wii: 52,583 1,218 (2.37%)- PSP: 31,503 7,574 (19.38%) - PS3: 14,520 2,369 (14.03%) - PS2: 14,234 3,553 (19.98%) - Xbox 360: 2,963 926 (23.81%) - GBA SP: 833 224 (36.78%) - Game Boy Micro: 512 76 (12.93%) - Gamecube: 255 50 (24.39%) - DS Phat: 90 25 (21.74%) - GBA: 12 3 (33.33%)[Source: Media Create]See also: Previous Japanese hardware sales charts, Sense of humor

CASE FILE B-854, "THE ERA OF AN END"I used to have everything under control. My business, my cases, my finances -- my life. There was a time when I thought my decisions were sound, but like leaving your finest china at the end of a bowling alley, it's the sound that lets you know you've made a bad decision and that you've turned your back far too quickly. Hindsight isn't 20/20 when you've got bits of teacup sticking out of your retina. "What if?" It's a question, albeit a lazily constructed one, that we here at Joystiq often enjoy asking. What if the PlayStation 3 was cheaper? What if the DS Lite was a miserable failure? What if human beings had balloon whisks for arms and flashlights for eyes and were forced to lead an existence composed entirely of unblinking and brightly lit baking? All important questions, though none as important as the one recently posed by the Olympic union of Mario and Sonic, two of gaming's most famous guys who jump on other guys to kill them. What if Mario chose someone else to go to the Olympics?- DS Lite: 130,549 9,078 (7.47%)- Wii: 75,571 8,501 (12.67%)- PSP: 41,546 2,223 (5.08%) - PS3: 20,459 1,176 (5.44%) - PS2: 16,961 3,640 (27.33%) - Xbox 360: 3,492 582 (20.00%) - Game Boy Micro: 765 38 (5.23%) - GBA SP: 607 50 (8.98%) - Gamecube: 270 97 (26.43%) - DS Phat: 135 24 (15.09%) - GBA: 22 13 (144.44%)[Source: Media Create]See also: Previous Japanese hardware sales chartsAfter the break -- the games that could have been.

It's not very often that you get accused of being part of an evil conspiracy. It certainly isn't very often that you're given opportunity to use words such as "collusion," "racketeering" or "farcical," especially not in the same sentence! It is thus with great pleasure that we inform you that Joystiq has been implicated in an imagined and entirely farcical collusion that promotes racketeering. The always entertaining and fundamentally unhinged attorney at lawl, Jack Thompson, has deemed it fit to include us (along with the ESA, Penny Arcade, Gamespot, Kotaku and more) in his latest attack on Take Two. Apparently, the publisher has "collaborated and conspired" with us to further their racketeering activities. Of course, we're not even sure what racketeering is. "I'm selling these fine leather rackets," springs to mind, but we're convinced it's more complex than that. Perhaps we've been USING TOO MANY CAPITALIZED WORDS? Should we "turn it down a notch," as the old folks are fond of saying? Either way, please let us know in the comments section -- or else we'll punch you in the face and trash your store, ya hear?- DS Lite: 121,471 12,959 (11.94%)- Wii: 67,070 22,575 (50.74%)- PSP: 43,769 12,406 (22.08%) - PS3: 21,635 10,480 (32.63%) - PS2: 13,321 1,264 (8.67%) - Xbox 360: 2,910 423 (12.69%) - Game Boy Micro: 727 85 (10.47%) - GBA SP: 557 122 (17.97%) - Gamecube: 367 127 (52.92%) - DS Phat: 159 40 (33.61%) - GBA: 9 4 (30.77%)[Sales chart beaten out of: Media Create]See also, or else: Previous Japanese hardware sales charts[This edition inspired by our fellow racketeers, rocketeers and raconteurs, Penny Arcade]

Much like the gruesome aftermath of an unexpected shark attack, it was difficult to miss the fact that a crucial part of us recently went missing. Last week, the Japanese sales charts were mysteriously absent, leaving nothing but a festering hole on the front page and a severe bout of dizziness for all involved. Of course, the blame is to be firmly placed on the shark -- here meaning the Game Developer's Conference held in San Francisco. We were ill-prepared when it devoured our energy in one terrifying gulp and by the time we filmed a special video "skit," it had become all too apparent that we had little acting, humor, writing or basic conversational abilities. Instead, we present a gallery of miscellaneous GDC images, many of which depict Joystiq staffers in various states of tomfoolery and general ineptitude. If you are truly outraged by the lack of last week's charts (presented after the break!), use these images to identify us and then punch us in the face.- DS Lite: 108,512 3,302 (2.95%) - PSP: 56,175 9,981 (15.09%)- Wii: 44,494 13,477 (23.25%) - PS3: 32,115 11,885 (27.01%) - PS2: 14,585 779 (5.07%) - Xbox 360: 3,333 46 (1.36%) - Game Boy Micro: 812 7 (0.87%) - GBA SP: 679 59 (7.99%) - Gamecube: 240 63 (20.79%) - DS Phat: 119 7 (6.25%) - GBA: 13 12 (48.00%)Source: Media Create]See also: Previous Japanese hardware sales charts%Gallery-2174%

CASE FILE B-853, "A MATTER OF NO LAUGHING"I get hired to track down a lot of things. Money. Criminals. Dames. Sometimes it's all three rolled into one. The important thing is that these things are ... things. Things you can hold on to. Things you can rough up a little. Things you can press your lips up against in passionate embrace, only to have your heart shattered like a stack of porcelain plates frolicking on the train tracks. And that's just the money. What if the thing you're looking for is no thing at all? What if it's an idea or a feeling or a state of mind? How the hell was I gonna find missing humor? The weekly Japanese sales charts have arrived! It's an unremarkable week, notable only for the significant drops experienced by the current chart leaders, the DS Lite and the Wii. The PS3 continues to have a rough time while its portable sibling enjoys a small boost higher up in the charts. - DS Lite: 136,846 64,331 (31.98%)- Wii: 63,618 14,932 (19.01%) - PSP: 34,505 2,330 (7.24%) - PS3: 20,676 2,755 (11.76%) - PS2: 16,192 159 (0.99%) - Xbox 360: 5,210 399 (8.29%) - Game Boy Micro: 953 69 (7.81%) - GBA SP: 843 137 (13.98%) - Gamecube: 347 36 (9.40%) - DS Phat: 153 32 (26.45%) - GBA: 40 4 (11.11%)With the European PS3 launch now a mere month away, Sony is surely looking to regain some lost traction in worldwide sales. Finding the job of your dreams is very much a process of finding just the right balance. Much like a tightrope walker carefully inching his way across a length of cord, the employee-to-be is trying to stay on his feet through a job that is rewarding both personally and financially. In fact, this is precisely why actual tightrope walkers often end up falling to their extremely painful deaths. Circus pay sucks.Admittedly, the millions and occasionally billions of dollars afforded to me by tracking and commenting on the Japanese sales charts made my decision to explore other careers all the more difficult. Just last week, I embarked on a job-finding quest, hoping to discover something new and more spirtually enriching. After the break, you'll learn just how spendidly my job interview went.- DS Lite: 201,177 55,104 (37.72%)- Wii: 78,550 12,810 (19.49%) - PSP: 32,175 959 (3.07%) - PS3: 23,431 4,704 (25.12%) - PS2: 16,033 1,507 (8.59%) - Xbox 360: 4,811 1,319 (21.52%) - GBA SP: 980 256 (35.36%) - Game Boy Micro: 884 166 (15.81%) - Gamecube: 383 77 (25.16%) - DS Phat: 121 2 (1.68%) - GBA: 36 8 (28.57%)[Source: Media Create]See also: Previous Japanese hardware sales charts

"Excuse me, but aren't you ... that guy?"The sound of success is not entirely dissimilar from the sound of a passing stranger, politely seeking to confirm his or her suspicions regarding your familiar identity. The higher intonation which ends the question might give you pause to doubt, but the eventual answer brings with it more certainty. You are that guy. We are that guy. Those guys. Whatever. We totally won an award!More than one, in fact. In a recent and moderately glitzy ceremony held by the Academy of Non-Interactive Japanese Sales Charts Tracking Interactive Arts and Science Devices, Joystiq waltzed away with 3 highly prestigious awards and one award which borders on notable, but isn't quite there yet. In the categories of "Sales Chartiest Chart," "Best Chart That Knows It's A Chart," "Best Use of Soul-Crushingly Oppressive Red Arrows" and "Best Sales Chart That Conveys Information Beneath Universally Appalling Attempts at Humor", our team of overworked writers were given recognition in the form of glorious trophies and mildly disconcerting winks from the judges. They also won't be killed this week. Thanks for molding us into that guy that roams the streets with a trophy in his hand and a wildly inaccurate self-image in his mind. We couldn't have done it without you looking at stuff like this: - DS Lite: 146,073 48,453 (24.91%)- Wii: 65,740 18,014 (21.51%) - PSP: 31,216 4,484 (12.56%) - PS3: 18,727 1,269 (6.35%) - PS2: 17,540 3,455 (16.46%) - Xbox 360: 6,130 1,235 (16.77%) - Game Boy Micro: 1,050 127 (10.79%) - GBA SP: 724 299 (29.23%) - Gamecube: 306 41 (11.82%) - DS Phat: 119 37 (45.12%) - GBA: 28 6 (17.65%)[Source: Media Create]See also: Previous Japanese hardware sales charts

With the majority of consoles still showing a decline in sales this week, it has become abundantly clear that Japanese gamers have finally identified what's most important in life -- that would be living. This realization is, of course, accompanied by a strong need for these enlightened gamers to distance themselves from that which most threatens their ability to live. Indeed, gaming poses what is perhaps the greatest danger of all to our fragile society and our defenseless youth. If those emotionless red arrows could convey any sort of directive, it would be to cast down your controllers and run away as fast as you can. The evil of gaming is directly responsible for putting your life in danger! If you don't believe us, believe the statistics presented after the break.- DS Lite: 194,526 66,879 (52.39%)- Wii: 83,754 2,641 (3.06%) - PSP: 35,700 1,332 (3.60%) - PS2: 20,995 826 (4.10%) - PS3: 19,996 1,109 (5.25%) - Xbox 360: 7,365324 (4.60%) - Game Boy Micro: 1,177 687 (36.86%) - GBA SP: 1,023475 (31.71%) - Gamecube: 347 207 (37.36%) - DS Phat: 8241 (33.33%) - GBA: 34 60 (63.83%)[Source: Media Create]See also: Previous Japanese hardware sales charts

Slump. Just saying the word seems to underline its meaning, as if the fatigued letters just roll over your lips with nary a care in the world. The Japanese sales charts still find themselves in last week's post-holiday slump, with only the DS Lite removing itself from the couch and bothering to put on some decent pants. It looks like the supply lines are still recovering from the holiday sales explosion, with all of the new consoles continuing their unimpressive sales slide. Next week should bring steadier supplies and, with any luck, a more abundant presence of the color green. We find it particulary soothing.- DS Lite: 127,647 38,360 (42.96%)- Wii: 86,395 7,313 (7.80%) - PSP: 37,032 11,772 (24.12%) - PS3: 21,105 4,426 (17.34%) - PS2: 20,169 2,494 (11.00%) - Xbox 360: 7,0411,994 (22.07%) - Game Boy Micro: 1,864 95 (4.85%) - GBA SP: 1,49849 (3.17%) - Gamecube: 554 57 (9.33%) - DS Phat: 12382 (200.00%) - GBA: 94 15 (18.99%)[Source: Media Create]See also: Previous Japanese hardware sales charts

If this week's Japanese sales chart was in any position to listen or understand human speech, we'd politely pull it aside and remark, "You've got red on you." We might even tag a "baby" at the end, but it would ultimately be for nought. Not having our romantic advances returned for so long brought us to the realization that sales charts do not listen, do not learn and do not love. They merely present the facts. This week, the facts point toward the end of the holiday shopping bonanza, with stores still being resupplied and shoppers thoroughly occupied with their brand new acquisitions. The Wii even manages to shove the DS Lite off its towering throne (take a picture!), but only just.- Wii: 93,708 101,623 (52.03%)- DS Lite: 89,287 255,591 (74.11%) - PSP: 48,804 69,382 (58.71%) - PS3: 25,531 44,413 (63.50%) - PS2: 22,663 29,374 (56.45%) - Xbox 360: 9,0359,200 (50.45%) - Game Boy Micro: 1,959 1,352 (40.83%) - GBA SP: 1,547817 (34.56%) - Gamecube: 611 647 (51.43%) - GBA: 79 22 (38.60%) - DS Phat: 4134 (45.33%)[Source: Media Create]See also: Previous Japanese hardware sales charts

  • Preliminary: Sony missed 2M shipment target in '06

    01.10.2007

According to a market survey released yesterday by Japanese game publisher, Enterbrain Inc., Sony is falling short of both its Japanese and global shipping targets. Having shifted 466,716 Playstation 3 units since the November 11 launch, the electronics giant appears to be missing its goal of shipping 1 million units in Japan by a considerably wide margin. An ABC News report notes the more successful situation in North America, where Sony hit their 1 million unit target, but concludes that the combined results fail to satisfy Sony's desire to ship 2 million consoles worldwide before the end of 2006. Production woes and steep competition from Nintendo's Wii, which sold close to a million units in Japan since early December, are the chief culprits cited. Sony is expected to release their own shipping estimates soon and warn that there may be discrepancies between their data and the results obtained by Enterbrain.See also: Japanese hardware sales charts

Ah, what a jolly time of year it is. In fact, it's the only time of year when the use of the word "jolly" doesn't result in someone coming across as a complete imbecile. Though many attempt to fight the false cheer and the forced goodwill, experience clearly shows that the best course of action lies parallel to the direction everyone else is going. After all, wedging your fingernails into the ground as the holiday consumerism vortex sucks the world into a timeless oblivion is futile and even worse -- physically tiring. Just let it go and send out that cheap and thoughtless greeting card.Everyone else is doing it. It's all fun and games until someone has all their limbs mangled and dies a horrible death. Oh, perhaps you were expecting a different ending to that familiar phrase? Toughies. We hate to break it to you but life is full of surprises and the worst one comes at the end. We've all seen the grievious bodily harm done by the Nintendo Wii and yet, most of us fail to comprehend the gravity of the situation. This is serious business. In a laughable attempt to be witty, many writers have resorted to calling these injuries (often caused by Wiimotes rapidly hurtling through the air), "wiinjuries." Cute, but oh so oblivious to the pain that is reality. In the real world, people die. And you know what? There's no funny way to put "Wii" into "fatality." It's time to clamp down on this mockery and remember those that have been lost to the most dangerous console in existence. Remember ... after the break.- DS Lite: 309,630 132,729 (75.03%)- Wii: 85,439 264,919 (75.61%)- PS3: 50,171 18,735 (59.6%) - Xbox 360: 35,343 31,290 (772.02%) - PS2: 30,460 7,345 (31.78%) - PSP: 28,930 5,013 (20.96%) - GBA SP: 1,896324 (20.61%) - Game Boy Micro: 1,555 303 (24.20%) - Gamecube: 569 252 (30.69%) - DS Phat: 167 27 (19.29%) - GBA: 17 5 (22.73%) - Xbox: 6 5 (45.45%)[Source: Media Create]See also: Previous Japanese hardware sales charts

FREEDOM. Perhaps you've heard of it. Perhaps you've read about it in a book or on a juvenile delinquent's garish MySpace page. Perhaps you've heard it dissected on political radio shows. Perhaps you've felt its impact on your head in a melodramatic and decidedly non-hilarious art film. But have you tasted it? Have you breathed it in through your cavernous nostrils and your gingivitis-playground-for-a-mouth? We thought not. Turn to the person / gamer next to you, stick out your tongue and take a deep and deliberate breath. That pervasive quality in the air, that unique taste, much like a fresh yam having just been dipped into the salty ocean -- that's freedom. It is all the more obvious now that the heartless DS Lite has at last tasted defeat and been ejected from its position of tyranny. Oh, how it has been thrown from its offensive pop-culture ... throne. How it tumbles from its domain of abuse and influence, freeing us all after more than 30 consecutive weeks of monotonous enslavement.Farewell, DS Lite. We stab at thee with our freedom blades and rejoice! The day is won and your body of chart predictability is perforated with truth. Like Swiss cheese. Of truth.- Wii: 350,358 [New Entry!]- DS Lite: 176,901 24,477 (12.15%)- PS3: 31,436 1,226 (3.75%) - PSP: 23,917 6,898 (22.39%) - PS2: 23,115 3,148 (11.99%) - Xbox 360: 4,053 2,954 (42.16%) - GBA SP: 1,572308 (24.37%) - Game Boy Micro: 1,252 17 (1.38%) - Gamecube: 821 245 (42.53%) - DS Phat: 140 72 (33.96%) - GBA: 22 5 (18.52%) - Xbox: 11 11 (N/A)[Source: Media Create]See also: Previous Japanese hardware sales charts

  • Wii gets nearly double PS3's attach rate in Japan

var digg_url = 'http://digg.com/gaming_news/Wii_gets_nearly_double_PS3_s_attach_rate_in_Japan'; Nintendo's of Japan's rosy Wii launch looked even rosier today as Media Create unveiled preliminary sales figures giving the machine a 1.8 attach rate, trouncing the PS3's "I'm only buying it to sell on Yahoo auctions" 0.98 attach rate. While this may seem low compared to the States, it's a lot better than the Japanese Cube's 1.2 launch attach rate and the Japanese DS's paltry 0.89. The top ten games and hardware sales were: Wii hardware: 350,358 Wii Sports: 176,167 Wii Play: 174,297 The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess: 139,011 Odoru Made in Wario: 63,954 Swing Golf Pangya: 12,908 Ennichi no Tatsujin: 10,763 Red Steel: 9,392 SD Gundam SCAD Hammers: 9,226 Tamagotchi Pika Pika Daitouryou: 8,042 Elebits: 5,791 As rosy as these sales figures are for Nintendo, they're a bit of a kick in the teeth to third-parties, whose offerings achieved sales that can only be described as comparatively weak. Third-parties have always struggled to compete with Nintendo's acclaimed first- and second-party development teams and, according to these preliminary numbers, it seems that this trend will continue on the Wii. It'll be interesting, and important, to see how third-party titles fare on the Wii in the upcoming months.
