Jolicloud 1.0 demonstrated on Acer Aspire One 533, coming to your netbook soon
We're always skeptical when it comes to underground operating systems whipped up for one specific purpose, but Jolicloud has managed to continually impress us with each passing build. Now, at long last, the netbook-centric OS has arrived at the magical 1.0, and our comrades over at Netbook News have managed to score an early copy. Better still, they're showcasing it on Acer's just-released Aspire One 533, and if the bootup speed is any indication, we'd say the two are a match made in heaven. The 1.0 version sure looks grown-up compared to those earlier builds, and while we suspect it would take a bit of getting used to before we really found ourselves comfortable in an app-driven desktop OS, we definitely like the looks of it. Jolicloud promises touch support in version 1.0, gives a demo now
It's been a little while since we've heard any major news about Jolicloud, but it looks like the upstart, Linux-based OS is about to get a pretty significant upgrade -- the company has just announced that version 1.0 of the operating system will boast built-in support for touchscreens. That includes a whole array of standalone touchscreens and netbook displays (full list at the link below) and, as you can see in the brief demo video after the break, it certainly seems to be responsive enough when using Jolicloud's new HTML5 interface on a Samsung NB250 netbook. Jolicloud pre-beta now available to download, walkthrough now available for viewing
Let's face it: Chrome OS has been snagging all of the attention in the OS world here lately, but let us not forget about Jolicloud. The Linux-based system, which was designed to be installed onto existing netbooks without much of a fuss, has finally reached its public pre-beta stage. In other words, the 600MB .exe file is now out for you and yours to download and try, and according to our good pals over at Download Squad, it's well worth the effort. They seemed to have no issues whatsoever installing it as a second OS on their machine, and they went ahead and deemed it superior to Chrome OS' earliest build due to its ability to support "both native and web-based applications equally well." Their own tests found it to boot in just 15 seconds on an Eee PC netbook, but if you're still curious if dipping your toes is the best move, hop on past the break for a lengthy walkthrough video.
Jolicloud beta gets a thorough going over, Microsoft still not worried
We've had our eyes on Jolicloud for a while, and with its eminent beta release the crazy kids at CNET have given it a pretty thorough overview. Tariq Krim has an interesting take on the cloud netbook experience, with an emphasis on quick and easy access to apps -- exemplified by the fact that both installed apps and data are tied to your account, so that no matter which machine you're logged on to, you'll have the same apps and all your data at your disposal. Trolling OK Cupid has never been easier! On the plus side, the reviewer found that installing from a USB key (even while keeping your current OS intact) was a breeze. Also singled out for praise were the large selection of apps and Windows emulation that allowed access to many of your Windows apps. Jolicloud OS alpha release struts its stuff... on video!
Tariq Krim's Jolicloud operating system just got a full video walkthrough -- and while it ain't Citizen Kane, it does prove itself to be a wholesome, rather light-hearted affair that your whole family will love. Installed on a Samsung NC10 netbook, the cloud OS manages to combine Linux and social networking into a flavorful melange. Among the "social" aspects this bad boy is integrated user updates, and the ability to look for other Jolicloud users who might be online at the same time you are. If you're addicted to the Facebook and the Twitter, or if you like the idea of having your friends and enemies alerted whenever you log onto your ultraportable, peep the video below. The private alpha should begin making the rounds this June.

See that? That's what could be on your netbook later this year. Out of nowhere, one Tariq Krim has crafted the Jolicloud operating system, which is an OS designed specifically for those miniaturized laptops that rely on underpowered CPUs and less RAM than any PC should be booted up with. In essence, Jolicloud is a modified flavor of Linux that promises faster boot times than other alternatives, and judging by the shot above, it's pretty heavily reliant on icon-based navigation.
