  • Halloween Horror Streams: Resident Evil 2's righteous Raccoon City

Resident Evil's amazing remake is coming back in HD next year. The Evil Within made us remember Resident Evil 4's raw magic. Next year's brand new Resident Evil: Revelations 2 has us reflecting on Code Veronica's gothic madness. But where is the love for Resident Evil 2, that slice of brilliance which moved the original's haunted house horror into the big city? It had intersecting campaigns! It had giant, un-killable freaks in trench coats and people with spiky tongues and exposed brains! A young lady's father grew an eyeball on his arm! Then an alligator shows up for no good reason. It's one of the best horror games ever made. It put director and Platinum Games co-founder Hideki Kamiya on the map. Starting at 4:00PM EST on Joystiq.com/Twitch we'll be streaming Resident Evil 2 from the start. Leon meets Claire. Claire wears a weird leotard. Leon wears football shoulder pads for no reason. It's great. Joystiq.com/Twitch broadcasts every Tuesday and Thursday at 4:00PM EST, but we stream at odd times all the time so make sure to follow us on Twitch. [Images: Capcom]

When Disney purchased Lucasfilm in 2012, the writing was on the wall for LucasArts. The company had been shuttering studios for years already, slimming down Disney Interactive piece by piece. LucasArts did die, but with the house's best years long past them the real fear was that its long-dormant catalog would just be buried by Disney in the process. What would come of all those '80s and '90s LucasArts classics that had never been digitally released? Turns out those fears were unfounded. Good Old Games is bringing the LucasArts catalog back to the masses, including much-loved space flight sims like TIE Fighter. To celebrate, Joystiq will stream TIE Fighter at 5:30PM EST on Joystiq.com/Twitch. Resident EVE Valkyrie and Star Citizen pilot Xav de Matos (@Xav) will dust off his flight stick and take to the skies. Joystiq.com/Twitch broadcasts every Tuesday and Thursday at 4:00PM EST but irregular streams like these happen all the time so follow us on Twitch to catch them all. [Images: LucasArts]

  • Halloween Horror Streams: Vampire's delight in Quest for Glory IV

Who needs the lush audio design of Alien: Isolation or the pristine mix of technology and art in Amnesia: A Machine for Pigs to get frightened by video games? Horror ain't dependent on a sense of convincing reality, son! It's all about creating atmosphere, the right mood for making your brain think about all the things it really doesn't want to think about. Haunted House on Atari 2600 is just a black screen with a pair of googly eyes on it, and if you play it at 4:00AM on a dark and stormy night, you'll bug right out. Likewise Quest for Glory IV:Shadows of Darkness' pixelated vampires may look antiquated, but this adventure RPG's got the goods, every bit the gothic freak out equal of classic bloodsucker literature. Joystiq's Halloween Horror Streams extravaganza has had zombies, psychos, and slender men, but no vampires! We'll fix that today with a stream of Quest for Glory IV, starting at 4:00PM EST on Joystiq.com/Twitch. Joystiq.com/Twitch broadcasts every Tuesday and Thursday at 4:00PM EST, but we're ramping up our schedule. If you want to catch all our horror streams this week, or even our sessions with Halo: The Master Chief Collection ahead of its release, make sure to follow us on Twitch. [Images: Sierra]

  • Halloween Horror Streams: Left 4 Dead 2 brings, mauls us together

    10.24.2014

In the name of Halloween Horror Streams, you've seen Joystiq ask inane questions of Slender Man. You've seen Joystiq wear a schoolgirl outfit while berating, then fearfully running away from a giant psychotic wielding a hammer. Now, with just one week left before All Hallows' Eve, you'll watch Joystiq scream at one another to not use up their dang med packs while a Boomer is still in the room. Seriously, what are you doing, your health is over 50 percent! Just save the med pack. Great. Now we're going to die. Everyone back to the safe room. Left 4 Dead 2 comes to Joystiq's Halloween Horror Streams on Joystiq.com/Twitch at 4:00PM EST! Thrill as Jess Conditt (@JessConditt) has to save everyone. Swoon as Xav de Matos (@Xav) wields a shotgun like a surgeon. Rage as Alexander Sliwinski (@Sliwinski) hordes all the pills. Gawp as Anthony John Agnello (@ajohnagnello) tries to remember the controls. Joystiq.com/Twitch is where the magic happens every Tuesday and Thursday at 4:00PM EST. Halloween Horror Streams, however, happen all the time through Halloween so make sure to follow us on Twitch to know when we go live. [Images: Valve]

    10.23.2014

Update: It's over, so catch the full replay after the break! Don't worry, the hard days are all in the past. The habit's been kicked. No more obsessing over leader boards. No more retries at dawn, trying to best your friend's achievements. No more shakes when you put down the controller. Geometry Wars 2 was 2008! We've all moved past it. Wait. There's a Geometry Wars 3? It warps and distorts the old twin-stick shooting? Fine. Just one play. It's easy to stop after just one round. Let's do this. Lucid Games joins Joystiq Streams today to give us an early taste of Geometry Wars 3: Dimensions. Starting at 5:15PM EST on Joystiq.com/Twitch, Ludwig Kietzmann (@LudwigK) will pick up his controller and relapse hard. Joystiq.com/Twitch broadcasts live every Tuesday and Thursday at 4:00PM EST, but if you want to catch streams of weird games and upcoming releases like this one, follow us on Twitch to know whenever we go live. 10.23.2014

The mere suggestion of danger, peril, and the impossible can be the scariest thing in the world to some folks. Take good old Slender Man, the Internet's very own nightmare tulpa. He's not even a killer! He's just omnipresent, convincing others to do evil. Spooky freak with his stupid Matrix suit. We'll show him a thing or two. Joystiq's Halloween horror game streaming extravaganza rolls on at 4:00PM EST today on Joystiq.com/Twitch with Slender: The Arrival. Anthony John Agnello (@ajohnagnello) has never played any Slender game before and is walking in blind. Susan Arendt (@SusanArendt) will be on hang giving away copies of the game for PS3 and 360 in the chat and to laugh at Anthony's cowardice. We broadcast live every Tuesday and Thursday on Joystiq.com/Twitch at 4:00PM EST, but we're streaming horror games every day until Halloween so follow us on Twitch to know when we go live. • Halloween Horror Streams: All along the Clock Tower 3

    by

    10.22.2014

Halloween songs are misleading! "Monster Mash" implies good times at a graveyard bash. "Thriller" doesn't encourage caution; Vincent Price always sounds like he's kidding. "Don't Fear the Reaper" explicitly says not to fear the reaper. And since Ray Parker Jr. ain't afraid of ghosts, why should you be? Don't be lulled into a false sense of security by these crunchy jams, dear friends. When you do that, a giant freak wielding an enormous pair of scissors will sneak up behind you and cut you in half. It happens. Clock Tower 3 tells me so. Starting at 4:00PM EST on Joystiq.com/Twitch, Joystiq will kick off its Halloween Horror Streams extravaganza with Capcom's Clock Tower 3. Little known fact: Clock Tower 3 was conceived in part by Kinji Fukasaku, the film director behind Tora Tora Tora and Battle Royale. That is a very different sort of graveyard smash. We'll have horror streams on Joystiq.com/Twitch almost every day until Halloween. If you want to catch them all, make sure to follow us on Twitch! Tomorrow's stream: Slender: The Arrival with a ton of free Xbox 360 and PS3 copies to giveaway. Be there. [Images: Capcom/Clock Tower Wikia]

    10.21.2014

Insomniac, it's been such a long, long time. Ratchet & Clank: Into the Nexus was a snack, Fuse was a dud, and 2011's Resistance 3 was kind of brilliant but it was also a bummer. Seriously, no matter how hopeful the ending was that game was grimmer than a birthday party where the clown is an IRS auditor. We miss your breakdancing bombs, Insomniac. We miss your blasters that turn people into penguins. Now here's Sunset Overdrive and its gallons of orange goo, its LP gun, its Tony Hawk's Pro Skater-ian acrobatics. Are you finally home, Insomniac? Let's find out. Starting at 4:00PM EST on Joystiq.com/Twitch our very own Ludwig Kietzmann (@LudwigK) will stream the retail version of Sunset Overdrive for your Insomniac-longing heart. Danny Cowan (@db_cowan) will be chilling in the chat feeding your questions to Ludwig. That's Joystiq.com/Twitch at 4:00PM EST, just like we do every Tuesday and Thursday. Starting tomorrow, though, we're streaming nothing but horror games every day until Halloween so make sure to follow us on Twitch to know when we go live. [Images: Insomniac]

  • Joystiq Streams: Vib-Ribbon's block rocking beats

    10.17.2014

It's Friday night! Time to gather the supplies. One sensory deprivation tank ensuring complete darkness, silence, and numbness? Check. Approximately three pounds of Pixie Stix ensuring all hallucinations are as giddy as they are disturbing? Check. Tom Waits, Portishead, and Cibo Matto CDs to start blasting when the visual hallucinations begin? Check. Oh wait, you don't have any of those things? Don't worry. Vib-Ribbon, the PlayStation classic newly released in the US for the first time, provides the same experience. A sugar-fueled fever dream about skittering sketch rabbits jumping through hoops to the music in your soul. That's what this game's all about! Starting at 4:00PM EST on Joystiq.com/Twitch, we'll be streaming a whole lot of Vib-Ribbon in order to give you a transcendent psychedelic experience. Why? Because it's the weekend and Vib-Ribbon is awesome. Richard Mitchell (@TheRichardM) digs deep into his CD collection while Danny Cowan (@db_cowan) and Susan Arendt (@SusanArendt) riff on the cultural detritus that birthed this beauty of a game. That's Joystiq.com/Twitch at 4:00PM EST, just like we do every Tuesday and Thursday. If you want to see every freaky stream we do, make sure to follow us on Twitch. [Images: SCEA]

  • Joystiq Streams: No tricks, just treats with Costume Quest 2

    10.16.2014

Trick or treat, smell my feet, give me something good to eat. If you don't, I don't care, I'll just ask you some weird question about Halloween and give you a free copy of Costume Quest 2, Double Fine's new RPG! Joystiq's already run its review of Costume Quest 2, but there's just something special about seeing that trick, treating, and turn-based battling in real time while adults wax nostalgic about their old costumes. Plus, as hinted at before, we're giving away a ton of free copies of the game while we play. Come 4:00PM EST, we'll play Costume Quest 2 live from the beginning on Joystiq.com/Twitch, giving away a copy of the game every six minutes. What do you do to get a copy of the game? Tune in to find out. No one will be forced to drink their Ovaltine. However, you might have to tell us how many Star Wars characters appear in the movie ET. Joystiq Streams broadcasts live every Tuesday and Thursday at 4:00PM EST on Joystiq.com/Twitch, but as we did yesterday with Bayonetta 2, we regularly stream at odd times. Want to catch us? Follow us on Twitch. [Images: Double Fine]

  • Joystiq Streams: Bayonetta 2 for what ails you

    by
    Anthony John Agnello
    Anthony John Agnello
    10.15.2014

Here is what happens in the prologue of Bayonetta 2: Bayonetta goes Christmas shopping with a morbidly obese caricature of Joe Pesci in midtown Manhattan. She asks her best friend Jeanne to go buy caviar for a Christmas party before Jeanne jumps a motorcycle off a building for no reason. Then Bayonetta jumps on top of a royal blue fighter jet, upon which she slaughters a squad of centaur angels before destroying the 59th Street Bridge. Afterward she flies through the city on crow wings so she can catch an Empire State Building-scaling dragon, shoving it back into a hell. Through a portal made out of her own hair. The prologue of Bayonetta 2 literally makes life better, so we're going to stream it and more of the beginning of the game at 4:00PM EST on Joystiq.com/Twitch. A whole gaggle of Joystiq staffers will be on air hanging out, so please join us to chat about the game. Today's talking point: moments of raw joy in video games. We broadcast every Tuesday and Thursday at 4:00PM EST on Joystiq.com/Twitch, but as you may have noticed, today is Wednesday. If you want to catch unpredictable streams like these and our upcoming two weeks of horror streams, make sure to follow us on Twitch.

  • Joystiq Streams: Discovering The Evil Within

    by
    Anthony John Agnello

    10.14.2014

The Evil Within, much as it is in the human psyche, has proven mercurial and divisive. Is The Evil Within born evil? Or was it just raised that way? The only way to find out is to make more and more people confront The Evil Within on its own terms, much like we're going to force horror gaming fanatic Richard Mitchell (@TheRichardM) to do on today's stream. Some of Richard's favorite games include Amnesia, Resident Evil, and even deep cuts like Fatal Frame 4 and Silent Hill: Shattered Memories. His history with the genre is vast and he'll be playing The Evil Within completely blind for the very first time on Joystiq.com/Twitch at 4PM EST. Joystiq.com/Twitch broadcasts live action every Tuesday and Thursday at 4PM EST, but we're going to be streaming horror games almost every day over the next two weeks so make sure to follow us on Twitch to know when we go live. • Joystiq Streams: The Vanishing of Ethan Carter blind play giveaway

    by
    Anthony John Agnello
    Anthony John Agnello
    10.09.2014

The Vanishing of Ethan Carter is weird. Really weird. So weird that it really has to be seen to be believed. While the Joystiq review certainly had fine things to say about it, Richard Mitchell's bold description of its unsettling strangeness has merely piqued our curiosity rather than sated it. Emboldened by resurrected forest mystery Twin Peaks, Vanishing's siren call is now irresistible. We will stream it together, blind and unknowing, ready for what may come. Starting at 4:00PM EST on Joystiq.com/Twitch, we'll be streaming The Vanishing of Ethan Carter as Anthony John Agnello (@ajohnagnello) plays it for the first time. Apparently forest astronauts happen. Awesome. Richard Mitchell (@TheRichardM) will be hanging out in the chat, offering moral support, and giving away Steam codes for Vanishing gratis. Joystiq.com/Twitch at 4:00PM EST, just like we do every Tuesday and Thursday. Chances are we'll be streaming some weirdness on Friday too! What will we be streaming? Follow us on Twitch to find out. • Joystiq Streams: First date with hard mode in Alien: Isolation

    by
    Anthony John Agnello

    10.07.2014

Alien: Isolation is a brutal affair, wrought in the hues of '70s filmmaking and '90s PC gaming. "Checkpoints? We don't need no stinking checkpoints!" says Alien. That's just before it bites your face off, forcing you to start that whole story sequence over again, hiding under desks and in lockers, while a terrifying, two-mouthed freak stalks you around every corner. As Ludwig Kietzmann describes in his Alien: Isolation review, the game's scares and difficulty can be exhausting. Just imagine what it's like on the hardest difficulty. Let's find out together. Starting at 4:00PM EST on Joystiq.com/Twitch, we'll be streaming the middle chapters of Alien: Isolation on hard mode, doing our damndest to sneak past the xenomorph. Anthony John Agnello (@ajohnagnello) will play while Jess Conditt (@jessconditt) offers moral support and hangs in the chat. Anyone who swings by early will get to partake in the usual pre-show tomfoolery. We broadcast live on Joystiq.com/Twitch every Tuesday and Thursday at 4:00PM EST, but we also stream on other days at unusual times so make sure to follow us on Twitch to know when we're on! • Joystiq Streams: Ride the fader and ride it low in PS4's Driveclub

    10.03.2014

Last week, Joystiq closed out the week with a look at Forza Horizon 2 on Xbox One, the signature racer for Microsoft's machine in the fall push of 2014. Its open world delights are well documented! What of the circuit racing fan, though? What if you don't want to roll around in a golden Bentley, dodging clearly mad drivatars? Nearly a year after its expected launch day release, PlayStation 4's Driveclub is here. For the driver more concerned with shaving half-seconds off laps, Driveclub lets you do so with your pals in a variety of ways. We'll be taking them all out for a test drive today on Joystiq Streams. Starting at 4:00PM EST on Joystiq.com/Twitch, Ludwig Kietzmann (@LudwigK) and Anthony John Agnello (@ajohnagnello) will check out the complete retail version of Driveclub on PS4. Come by, check out some cars, ask some questions. Joystiq.com/Twitch brings you Joystiq Streams every Tuesday and Thursday at 4:00PM EST, but we regularly do unscheduled streams like these so follow us on Twitch if you want to catch them all. • Shadow of Mordor roundtable with Joystiq on Google and Twitch

    by
    Anthony John Agnello
    Anthony John Agnello
    10.03.2014

Middle-earth: Shadow of Mordor has, like its Gondorian ranger hero, been quietly sneaking around the outskirts of the video game world for the past year. Studying weaknesses. Plotting routes of destruction. Revealing itself only when it's far too late to resist its vicious attacks! As discussed in our review of Shadow of Mordor, developer Monolith has turned in an open world game that is both deeply familiar and seductively inventive. All that sneaking and brawling sure looks like Assassin's Creed and Batman, but the Nemesis System makes it something else altogether. Is it different enough, though? Will hardcore Arkham City fans find new things to love? How about people burnt out on open world games? What about people who don't like Tolkien? Joystiq will discuss all that and more in our roundtable discussion. The staff will host a Google Hangout starting at 2:30PM EST. Want to chat with the crew? Follow along on Google Plus, right here in this post, or at Joystiq.com/Twitch. [Images: WBIE]

  • Joystiq Streams: October's first horror stream is D4 for Xbox One

    by
    Anthony John Agnello
    Anthony John Agnello
    10.02.2014

October is here, dear friends. The long toiling wait of summer heat and madness has ended, and now is our opportunity to sit in the dark, willfully scaring the ever-loving crap out of ourselves. That's the Halloween way! While survival horror big guns like Alien: Isolation and The Evil Within are still on the horizon, there's a perfectly good psychological freak out sitting right on the Xbox One: D4: Dark Dreams Don't Die, the latest from Deadly Premonition mastermind Swery. Don't think of D4 as a game of all-encompassing spiritual dread or slasher gore. Think of it more as a psychological thriller that makes you feel like you're going insane because of time travel. And murder. And ladies who act like cats. On Joystiq.com/Twitch at 4:00PM EST, Jessica Lynn Conditt (@JessConditt) will fire up the Xbox One and her Kinect to be tortured by Swery's oddball adventure all over again. Anthony John Agnello (@ajohnagnello) will be hanging out in the chat, answering your questions and ranting about Deadly Premonition. That's Joystiq.com/Twitch at 4:00PM EST, when we broadcast on the regular every Tuesday and Thursday. We stream all kinds of off hours, though, so if you never want to miss a show follow us on Twitch! [Images: Access Games]

  • Joystiq Streams: Casting a fiery eye on Shadow of Mordor

    by
    Anthony John Agnello

    09.30.2014

JOY-STIQ! JOY-STIQ! JOY-STIQ! STREEEEAAAAAMMMMMMMMS! One day, when we're all War Chiefs in Sauron's army of Uruks, that's what they'll chant. From high and low, they'll call our names out, afraid of our endless wrath and prowess in battle! Then again, it seems like being an Uruk is hard work. You're outside literally all the time, giant pig-wolf things are always trying to eat you, and there is almost always a bearded dude carrying half a sword skulking in the shadows waiting to stab you. Forget it. Joystiq Streams may not be ready for war chiefdom, but we're certainly ready to play Shadow of Mordor for your viewing pleasure. Starting at 4:00PM EST on Joystiq.com/Twitch, Richard Mitchell (@TheRichardM) will be playing through Mordor's early missions. Alexander Sliwinski (@Sliwinski) and Anthony John Agnello (@ajohnagnello) will be around to talk about the game's subtleties and hang in the chat. Show up early for the pre-show tomfoolery. Joystiq Streams airs every Tuesday and Thursday at 4:00PM on Joystiq.com/Twitch, but if you want to catch all our streams make sure to follow us on Twitch. [Images: WBIE]

  • Joystiq Streams: An early drive with Forza Horizon 2

    by
    Anthony John Agnello
    Anthony John Agnello
    09.25.2014

Forza Motorsport always wore its deep love of (and lust for) cars right on its sleeve. Forza's races were enamored with driving as a reflection of the vehicle's capabilities and how a driver worked in concert with it. There wasn't any room left in those games for a love of driving on the open road, for putting on a killer album and taking the car anywhere without overly worrying about turn radius. Hence Forza Horizon and its lovely successor on Xbox One, Forza Horizon 2, and its clear adoration for driving first, cars an intimate second. Ludwig Kietzmann has wrapped up his review of Forza Horizon 2 but has yet to slake his thirst for its open world driving, so we're streaming it early this week on Joystiq.com/Twitch. Tune in at 4:00PM EST for a long drive with nothing to think about. Joystiq Streams airs every Tuesday and Thursday at 4:00PM EST on Joystiq.com/Twitch. To catch our many irregular streams, follow us on Twitch! And if you like it when we get weird, always tune in before hand for the pre-show. [Images: Microsoft]

  • Joystiq Streams: Minimum with Human Head and Steam code giveaway

    by
    Anthony John Agnello
    Anthony John Agnello
    09.23.2014

Human Head Studios had a turbulent decade. The Wisconsin-based developer kicked off the HD console generation in 2006 by finishing Prey, a first-person shooter with some interesting ideas about portals released well before cake memes took over the web. After Prey's success, Human Head turned around and started work on a wildly ambitious sequel, but that game met with a rather grisly, obscure end. After lighter projects on Android and Wii U, Human Head is back with Minimum, an appropriately named third-person shooter with a spare aesthetic. How has the team's development process changed in the era of early access? What's it like making a shooter in 2014 compared to 2006? We'll find out when Human Head sits down with Joystiq for a look at their latest. Starting at 4:00PM EST, Joystiq Streams will be playing Minimum on Joystiq.com/Twitch. Project leader Norm Nazaroff and art director Jim Sumwalt will join Anthony John Agnello (@ajohnagnello) and Alexander Sliwinski (@Sliwinski) to discuss the game. Plus: We'll be doling out free copies of Minimum to folks that come out to watch. That's Joystiq.com/Twitch at 4:00PM EST. Joystiq Streams broadcasts every Tuesday and Thursday at 4:00PM EST, but we go live other times as well so follow us on Twitch to catch every show. [Images: Human Head Studios]
