  • Joystiq Streams: Taking a hike through 1001 Spikes [UPDATE: Relive the stream!]

    07.31.2014

A theme has emerged on Joystiq Streams. Revisiting our recent tours through Secret Ponchos, Gods Will Be Watching, and Killzone Shadow Fall Intercept, it would appear that the Joystiq crew plays video games wherein we die a lot. Rather than try to sit back, reassess our skills, and try to not die so much, we have made the extra bold decision to lean into the death. Nicalis' 1001 Spikes is our destination, a veritable pit of doom, demise, and destruction perfect for our willfully mad approach to playing games live for your entertainment. Old-style pixelized punishment in the grand tradition of La Mulana, Super Meat Boy, and VVVVVV, 1001 Spikes is primed to tear us apart. Starting at 4PM EST, we'll be streaming 1001 Spikes on Joystiq.com/Twitch. If you've ever wondered what it sounds like when a South African man struggles desperately to not curse like a sailor, you're in for a treat, because Ludwig Kietzmann will be playing. Anthony John Agnello will be hanging out in the chat, whispering your words of encouragement to Ludwig even as we silently laugh at his failures. Joystiq Streams broadcasts every Tuesday and Thursday at 4PM EST at Joystiq.com/Twitch, but we often stream other times, so make sure to click that follow button on Twitch to get an alert when we go live. This is what Joystiq knows about ponchos: they keep you warm, look cool while you're riding a horse in a storm, are appropriate attire for selling burritos outside a Phish concert, and they make excellent dog beds when you're done with them. The things we don't know about ponchos? That's a secret. Switchblade Monkeys has the arcane knowledge that Joystiq covets. Secret Ponchos is Switchblade's new PvP shooter, hitting PC and PlayStation 4 this year and currently available through Steam Early Access. Always willing to fight for our right to party and know things about ponchos, Joystiq will take on Switchblade Monkeys in their own game on Joystiq Streams. We'll be playing the brand new 4-versus-4-player mode in Secret Ponchos on Joystiq.com/Twitch at 4PM EST. While Joystiq pits its negligible skills against Switchblade, we'll also be giving out free copies of the game in the chat while we play. Joystiq Streams broadcasts regularly on Tuesday and Thursday at 4PM EST on Joystiq.com/Twitch, but if you never want to miss a surprise stream make sure to follow us on Twitch! • Live Look: Gods Will Be Watching

Gods Will Be Watching, the new adventure game from Spain's Deconstructeam and publisher Devolver Digital, doesn't like you. It has absolutely no problem telling you very quickly just how much it doesn't like you. Across the science-fiction parable's six diverse chapters, just one wrong decision on how to help protagonist Sergeant Burden survive can result in multiple deaths. You will die, the dog will die, a robot will be wrenched apart for parts. The game is so demanding that Joystiq thought a primer looking at the first two chapters of the game might be helpful. Here's an overview of how to come close to completing the first chapter of the game and also a demonstration of how quickly things can go south in its fraught hostage situation. At the end is a quick sample of the game's second chapter, in which you have to survive brutal torture. Good times! [Images: Deconstructeam]

Update: The live stream has ended. You can relive the magic in the stream archive above. What in the world is in that STREAM, what you got in that STREAM? Get up out ya hater, we're playing The Crew beta, wait to take place at a similar pace So shake, shake it Roll out! Roll out! Roll out! Roll out! Get out my business, my biznass Unable to get the lingering sense of defeat from Tuesday's stream out of our collective heads, the Joystiq driving club is going to get in some last licks with The Crew beta on Joystiq.com/Twitch. Starting at 4PM EST, we're going to roll back into the crime ridden open world of Ubisoft's new racer. Xav de Matos, Jess Conditt, and Anthony John Agnello will be racing across the land. Alexander Sliwinski will be chilling in the chat, relaying your many questions to, well, the crew. Remember, that's Joystiq.com/Twitch at 4PM EST! Joystiq Streams broadcasts every Tuesday and Thursday at 4PM EST, but make sure to follow us on Twitch for when we decide to get brazenly weird like we're doing right now. [Images: Ubisoft]

    07.24.2014

Update: The stream has ended. Watch the replay above and subscribe to our YouTube Channel for more! Joystiq Streams simply can't stop shooting things on Joystiq.com/Twitch. We tried not to, we really did. First we tried to play The Crew beta, but technical issues forced Anthony John Agnello and Xav de Matos to retreat to the warm climes of Far Cry 3 co-op. On Wednesday, Joystiq succumbed fully to Destiny's charms, so Susan Arendt, Jess Conditt, and Xav put the beta through its paces on Xbox One. Now it's time for Killzone: Shadow Fall Intercept, the new cooperative campaign for PlayStation 4's signature shooter. Starting at 4PM EST, Joystiq Streams will play through Killzone: Shadow Fall Intercept with an all-star cast. Danny Cowan and Earnest "Nex" Cavalli will be on hand for some Helghast-flavored firefights, while Xav de Matos pulls off a streaming hat trick for the week. Anthony John Agnello will be hanging in the chat, feeding your myriad questions to the squad. Joystiq Streams regularly broadcasts at 4PM EST on Joystiq.com/Twitch every Tuesday and Thursday. Little secret: We stream a lot outside that regularly scheduled programming, so make sure to follow us on Twitch to know when we go live! [Image: Sony Computer Entertainment]

Destiny Beta Google Hangout and Xbox One Stream Spectacular [Update: Relive the stream!]

    by

    07.23.2014

Update: Watch the Google Hangout discussion here and the Xbox One stream above! At first, Joystiq said, "Sure, I'll check out Destiny. Why not? Bungie's made some good games. We like playing games." Then we played it. A lot of it. Then the beta went offline for a couple of days and Joystiq said, "Whatever. I'll wait three days to call Destiny back. We're not that serious or anything." Then we couldn't stop thinking about Destiny. The only course of action is to get everyone in the crew together and make a list of everything we like about the Destiny beta and everything we don't like to determine if we're ready for a real Destiny commitment. Starting at 2:30PM EST on Joystiq.com/Twitch, the Joystiq staff will be in a Google Hangout to discuss all things Destiny after our first taste of the action. Then we'll roll directly into a stream of the Xbox One version of the game immediately afterward, with a brand new fire team including Jess Conditt, Xav de Matos, and Susan Arendt. Tune in to hang out with us and ask many questions at Joystiq.com/Twitch at 2:30PM EST! [Images: Activision]

  • Joystiq Streams: The Crew beta giveaway road trip [UPDATE: Relive the stream!]

    07.22.2014

[UPDATE: We're live at Joystiq.com/Twitch... but we're not playing The Crew! The beta is currently down, but we're still giving away a ton of codes for when the beta is back up.] The end of July is dangerous for the Joystiq crew. As the heat continues to climb and the days stretch on and on, our lust for summer adventure reaches its zenith. We want to fill the car with mixtapes and take to the open road, wearing nothing but swimsuits, sunglasses, and bravery! How could we possibly abandon our audience, though? We can't rightly stream video games for you if we're tearing up the asphalt from here to Kalamazoo! The Crew, Ubisoft's open-nation racing game in beta testing this week, must slake our thirst for a road trip. Plus, you can join us! Starting at 4PM EST on Joystiq.com/Twitch, Joystiq's newly formed racing team will take to The Crew beta to put it through its paces. Xav de Matos, Richard Mitchell, and Anthony John Agnello will be tearing up the road. Meanwhile, Alexander Sliwinski will be doling out a few dozen beta codes in the chat. How do you get the codes? Just show up and hang out. Joystiq Streams broadcasts every Tuesday and Thursday at 4PM EST, and many other times when it strikes our fancy. Never miss a stream by following us on Twitch! • Joystiq Streams: Fatal Frame 4's ghoulish Kodak moments [Update: Watch the replay!]

    by
    Anthony John Agnello
    Anthony John Agnello
    07.18.2014

Update: The stream is over, watch the replay above! Twitch was being a little twitchy, so the stream was split into three videos. Follow the annotations to move onto the next videos. It's fitting that Fatal Frame: Nuregarasu no Miku, the first HD entry in the series, would find its home on Nintendo's Wii U. Like Fatal Frame's haunted villages, Wii U is also full of Japanese ghosts, with once dead games like Bayonetta 2 and Devil's Third getting new life on the box. Plus the tablet controller, so difficult to find appropriate uses for even for its creators, is a natural fit for the Camera Obscura. As Fatal Frame is reborn, we lay the Mid-Summer Terror Train to rest with Fatal Frame 4, the long lost entry that never made it out of Japan. Officially at least. Don't worry if you're not fluent in Japanese - we've got a patch that translates the game into English. Starting at 4PM EST on Joystiq.com/Twitch, we'll be streaming a solid hour of Fatal Frame 4. Will ghosts devour Richard Mitchell's soul as he plays? Will Anthony John Agnello and Susan Arendt be able to stop talking about how awesome Fatal Frame 2 is long enough to learn about this obscure horror game? [Note from Susan: "Probably not."] Will the chat start posting pictures of ghosts that are really just their cats? [Other note from Susan: "Man, I hope so."] These questions and more will be answered when we go live at 4PM EST on Joystiq.com/Twitch. [Images: Nintendo]

A Ghost is an AI who can't get no love from me, and we're proving it at Joystiq.com/Twitch! That's not technically true. We love that wee Ghost. Like many proud knights this day, Joystiq cannot resist the siren call of Bungie's Destiny beta. As such, we're extending our usual Joystiq Streams pre-show antics by many minutes so as to dive into the beta for your viewing pleasure. Joystiq.com/Twitch at 2PM EST. Joystiq flies to the moon and sails among the stars. Then? Fatal Frame 4 at 4PM EST. [Images: Activision]

  • Joystiq Streams: Rambling down the Road Not Taken [UPDATE: Relive the stream!]

    07.17.2014

Road Not Taken, Spry Fox's new roguelike puzzler for PlayStation 4 and PC, is nowhere near as outwardly forbidding as The Long Dark, which punished Joystiq Streams earlier this week, but seeing its little hooded hero huddled up against a fire in the dark, trying to make it a little bit further, fills the Joystiq crew with a lurking dread. Blame this stream on our overactive imaginations and our love of freaking ourselves out. Joystiq Streams Mid-Summer Terror Train continues its existential journey with Road Not Taken at 4PM EST on Joystiq.com/Twitch. Our own Jess Conditt will play through an early look at the game while Spry Fox's David Edery hangs out. Joystiq Streams broadcasts every Tuesday and Thursday at 4PM EST on Joystiq.com/Twitch. 07.16.2014

The things that terrify us never fade - the dark, basements, isolation, bugs, lake monsters, Paula Deen -but time isn't kind to our scary stories. Some horror stands up, though. The Exorcist is every bit as freaky as it was 40 years ago, but is Silicon Knights' Eternal Darkness: Sanity's Requiem still as scary in 2014 as it was in 2002? Will people who've never played that Gamecube classic still freak the geek out when they play it for the first time? Intrepid explorers that we are here at Joystiq, we're going to find out today on Joystiq Streams. Our very own Xav de Matos will play Eternal Darkness for the very first time on Joystiq Streams today at 4PM EST at Joystiq.com/Twitch. Come find out how one of gaming's horror essentials holds up. Joystiq Streams is broadcasting every day at 4PM EST this week at Joystiq.com/Twitch! Join us. [Images: Nintendo]

    07.15.2014

A strange thing happens when you're in real, honest-to-goodness wilderness. When the sun goes down and there's no artificial light, one of two things happens: either you go to sleep, or you're shocked wide awake after realizing how very dark, how very quiet, and how very big the world is. The Long Dark by Hinterland Studio is a new post-apocalyptic survival game in a land of many, but it distinguishes itself by tapping into that vein of instinctual unease. It's a game about when the world gets dark and quiet. Day two of the Mid-Summer Terror Train starts at 4PM EST on Joystiq.com/Twitch with The Long Dark. Hinterland's Raphael van Lierop will be on hand to talk about the game with Anthony John Agnello and Richard Mitchell. 07.14.2014

Horror need not be relegated to the sweet browns and reds of October! Must we wait until fall to get scared stupid like Ernest or all those dupes playing Slender on YouTube? No! Let us delight in the dumb scares of a dark movie theater, redolent with stale popcorn smells. Let us remember the creeping unease as we walked through that ridiculous haunted house at the boardwalk. Let us remember each and every freaky story told with maximum chutzpah around a roaring campfire. Joystiq's Mid-Summer Terror Train, wherein we stream horror games both new and old every day for a week, rolls out of the station at 4PM EST today on Joystiq.com/Twitch. Our first tale of terror is Haunting Ground, a Capcom game that involves hanging out with a dog and running away from a dude who looks like a morbidly obese Toxic Avenger. Join us! Mid-Summer Terror Train streams air all week at 4PM EST on Joystiq.com/Twitch and Twitch.tv/Joystiq. [Images: MobyGames/Mat/Capcom]

Update: Watch the replay above. No Luddy does it better/Makes me feel sad for the rest/No Luddy does it half as good as you/Baby, you're the best/I wasn't looking for video games/I tried to read a book/But like Heaven above me/The spy named Luddy/Is playing all my PS4 games tonight CounterSpy is appropriately named. Dynamighty's stealthy blend of sneaking, shooting, and bananas pop art for PS3 and PS Vita quietly disarmed E3 2013 attendees and then disappeared for months and months. In June, it popped back up at E3 2014 and joined the PlayStation 4 library looking every bit as slick as before. When will we get our mitts on a sweet finished version of the game? Unknown, but today Joystiq is getting an early look on a very special Joystiq Streams. Starting at 2PM EST, Joystiq's Ludwig Kietzmann will be streaming CounterSpy alongside Dynamighty co-founder David Nottingham. Enemy bases will be infiltrated, martinis will be shaken provided a tumbler is available, and everyone hanging out in the chat will get a look at the one of the most promising PS4 games no one's talking about yet. Tune it at Joystiq.com/Twitch at 2PM EST! [Image: Sony]

    07.10.2014

Larian Studios will never say die! More than a decade on from Divine Divinity, the studios remains committed to old-fashioned PC RPG style. Adventures in the magical kingdom of Rivellon do not need streamlined first-person shooting and aggressive Facebook features in 2014! Quests performed for the Council of Seven need not be augmented by pre-order exclusive DLC! This is turn-based role-playing the way grandma and grandpa used to like it back when you were just a twinkle in SteamOS' eye. Joystiq Streams is ready for a learning experience so we're diving blind into Divinity: Original Sin starting at 4PM EST on Joystiq.com/Twitch. Not only that, but we have a few copies of the game to give out too. Here's how it's going down. Anthony John Agnello will jump head first into Divinity to create a character and learn the ropes during the stream pre-show at 3:30PM EST. Alexander Sliwinski, a Divinity vet, will join him to help. Then both brave souls will wander into Rivellon starting at 4PM EST on Joystiq.com/Twitch. The chat's open all day so pop in and give us tips on how to play. Joystiq Streams broadcasts every Tuesday and Thursday at 4PM right here and at Twitch.tv/Joystiq. [Images: Larian Studios]

    07.08.2014

Oh yeah, brother! Guacamelee entered the ring in 2013 to become a bonafide cham-PION of platforming. Snapping into the beefy, juicy taste of slamming exploration and macho wrestling moves, not to mention its bonafide, bodacious chicken mazes, was an unparalleled experience in excellence. That was just the beginning! Now Guacamelee Super Turbo Championship Edition is here for a proverbial cage match on PlayStation 4, Xbox One, PC, and Wii U. Who are we to resist the chance to go mano a mano with Juan now that he's chock full of new levels and moves? Randy Savage-isms aside, Guacamelee was a Joystiq favorite last year and we're excited to dig in to the new revamped version of the game. We'll be playing Guacamelee Super Turbo Championship Edition live on Joystiq Streams starting at 4PM EST at Joystiq.com/Twitch. Swing on by to hang with us, as well as members of the Drinkbox crew. We'll also be doling out free copies of the game for PlayStation 4 and Xbox One as we go. Our Guacamelee Super Turbo Championship Edition stream and giveaway starts at 4PM EST on Joystiq.com/Twitch, the very same time Joystiq Streams broadcasts every Tuesday and Thursday.

"Anthony is on vacation," Xav screamed to Reviews Content Director, Richard Mitchell. "Are we responsible for today's Joystiq Streams?" "I think so. What should we do?" Richard shot back, holding a pair of large novelty sunglasses he earned as a reward in improv class. "Let's stream Metroid 2: Return of Samus on Game Boy." "That probably won't go over well," he scoffed, attempting to put the glasses in his non-novelty pants. "How about we stream Another Metroid 2 Remake, that complete Super Metroid-style remake of the game that has been in development for, like, a decade," Xav asked, swiping the glasses away from Richard like an annoyed parent. "Forget Anthony! Can we stream the original game, too?" Richard asked, pulling a second, somehow larger, pair of glasses out of seemingly nowhere. "I have a Game Boy Player hooked up to my GameCube and the original game. It's rough, but that might be fun," Xav replied. "Where are you getting these glasses?" "We're not supposed to reveal our secrets," Richard smirked. "That's magicians, you dumb-dumb." Join Richard and Xav for Joystiq Streams: Metroid 2 and Another Metroid 2 Remake today at 4PM ET! Nintendo may have forgotten the franchise exists, since no new game in the series has been released since 2010, but we haven't! We're playing both Another Metroid 2 Remake and the original Game Boy Metroid 2: Return of Samus at 4PM EST on the Joystiq Twitch channel. Joystiq Streams broadcasts every Tuesday and Thursday at 4PM EST.

  • Joystiq Streams: Space Engineers and the horror of the void [UPDATE: Relive the stream!]

    by
    Anthony John Agnello
    Anthony John Agnello
    06.24.2014

At the moment, NASA is building a new Mars rover to launch sometime around 2020. The little robot successor to the Curiosity rover, who's still chilling on the red planet collecting rocks and looking for water, will cost about $1.5 billion to make. The Center for Strategic and International studies, a foreign policy think tank, estimates that an internationally backed moon base will cost about $35 billion to build and around $7.4 billion to maintain year-round. In short: Space is expensive, y'all. If we're going to get our plans for a Joystiq party house built on Titan by 2017, we'd better get cracking and think economically. Keen Software House's Space Engineers is helping us cut costs by letting the Joystiq crew build all kinds of space ships and exoplanetary facilities in a safe, consequence free environment. Maybe we're going to build an 80-story party house on an asteroid! Who will stop us? Maybe you will, since we're giving away multiple copies of the game at 4PM EST on Twitch.tv/Joystiq. Come hang with us as we stream Space Engineers alongside creator Marek Rosa at 4PM EST on the Joystiq Twitch channel and right here at Joystiq.com. Free games and wild space dreams; what more do you need? Joystiq Streams broadcasts every Tuesday and Thursday at 4PM EST.
