  • Super Bowl hits new tweet record, but Twitter still prefers soccer

Gridiron football isn't exactly a world game, but the spectacle of the Super Bowl still draws nearly a billion viewers who do a heckuva lot of tweeting. It just horse-collared its previous Twitter record with around 28.4 million tweets from around the globe, easily surpassing last year's mark of 24.9 million. This year's edition did have a lot going for it: a tight match, a crazy finish, all those pricy ads and the whole Katy Perry dancing shark hoedown. But despite all that, it still couldn't touch the World Cup, which triggered 32.1 million tweets for the finale and 35.6 million for the Germany vs. Brazil semi-final matchup. And most of those likely involved the game, not a gigantic animatronic tiger.

  • Katy Perry bringing fruit dresses, more to The Sims 3 Showtime

Katy Perry has conquered the celebrity scene in reality and has moved to take over virtual realms, starting with The Sims. The collector's edition of The Sims 3 Showtime, which launches in March, will feature the Ultimate Stage bonus venue, Katy Perry themed items and a poster, as well as advertising campaigns featuring Perry herself, starting with the above music video. Not to brag, but we've listened to "The One that got Away" a few dozen times before, and we never imagined it as a story about the tragic death of anyone's soulmate, probably because it's actually about failed teenage love and the dangers of dating a boy who plays guitar. Maybe death sells more games, though. Maybe. %Gallery-144932%

  • WoW Moviewatch: Draenei

Draenei by Sharm is sort of a love song to one of the finest races on Azeroth. (That's the draenei, in case that's not clear.) The video was mostly created to apply some images to the song, although the video is obviously mostly centered on the music. The lyrics are just fine; I don't mean to disparage them, it's just that my focus on this piece is how well Sharm performs the song. She's really got one hell of a voice, and she manages to bring the guns to nearly every piece of music she performs. By the way, this is a parody of Katy Perry's E.T., if you don't recognize it. EmberIsolte's last movie, Ninja Raiders, was certainly a hit. She's now following up with Altaholic, which is a parody of Katy Perry's Hot 'n Cold. The video and lyrics were created by Gack and Eidni, while EmberIsolte performed the vocals. The video for this song is pretty fun, with a heavy mix of machinima techniques and gameplay footage. The lyrics for this piece do a great job fitting the music, without any of the "forced" feeling which many parodies suffer. The vocals sounded a little funny to me, but that sometimes happen when checking out a movie through YouTube. However, EmberIsolte does a pretty good job of nailing Perry's voice technique from the original song. It's nice to see Draenei surfacing as strong machinima characters. While that's not a direct commentary on movies like this, I think the choice of main character helps separate Altaholic from many of the other WoW parody pieces. Getting some variety in machinima is always a bonus. Interested in the wide world of machinima? We have new movies every weekday here on WoW Moviewatch! Look, we consider ourselves experts around here. Bungie tries to put one past us? Heck nah! Case closed. But then this little ditty hits our inbox and we're totally stumped. What is this? A game? Is this supposed to get us excited about something? You ever get the feeling, like, there's this whole other planet of other people who play other games...? Yeah, we got that feeling right now.

While we're waiting for the final results of the WeGame machinima contest, I thought I'd take some time to dig into the viewer submissions. The boys at Dirt Dog Gaming, of Eradar, have flooded my inbox. It's an interesting strategy that worked, but just this once. I previously wrote about their Christmas and New Years songs with a WoW spin on them. This time around, Mirabell and Barenger have parodied the infectious Katy Perry song, I Kissed a Girl. Their take, Tanked a Boss, isn't the best machinima by any means. The aspect ratio is way off and it sometimes jumps around. However, the song itself is worth it, and they get bonus points for the creative ways they give fellow guildmates shoutouts throughout the video![Thanks, Infamy, Barenger, Brendan, and Gump for your various submissions!]If you have any suggestions for WoW Moviewatch, you can mail them to us at machinima AT wowinsider DOT com.Previously on Moviewatch ...
