American PS3 owners who fancy getting their hands on the Killzone 2 demo will get an opportunity to try it out tonight, when the Helghast invasion of Home begins. If you're not into pre-ordering or setting up a European PSN account, you'll want to be wandering around Home from 9pm EST onwards. At that time, the Helghast soldiers will appear, brandishing demo codes for all who request them. Use the code to redeem the demo from the PlayStation Store. This may be the last chance to get hold of the demo before it finally releases to everyone on February 26th, a day before the game's actual release. It's not clear how long the Home invasion will last, so procrastinators beware.

SCEA just sent us this cute Killzone-themed Valentine's Day e-card. The problem? It asks us to have a "bloody Valentine's day." We're pretty certain if we gave our significant others that kind of message, we'd be spending the day alone. The staff at Joystiq PlayStation want to wish you a not-very-bloody and good Valentine's Day weekend.

The Photoshop gurus that roam NeoGAF are at it again, this time creating mock-up adverts for Killzone 2. Unlike the poorly worded (and fake) Super Bowl ad, these are advertisements we can get behind. Unsurprisingly, some choppers decided to voice their opinions on reactions to some recent Killzone 2 review coverage. According to these fans, the end message seems clear: Chill out, Killzone 2 is going to be rad.

  • Killzone 2 is GameFly's most wanted title

According to GamerDeals, Killzone 2 has topped GameFly's "Most Queued" list, making it the most popular title on the online rental service. This moment is marked also by the fact that this is the first time a PS3 title has held the top spot. The first-party, first-person shooter from Guerrilla Games has beaten out multiplatform games like Street Fighter IV and Resident Evil 5. For the full top ten list, be sure to have a look past the break. Now, there's one last inkling left on our minds. Seeing as Killzone 2 is the most sought after rental, we wonder if that implies anything about interest in buying the game? It'll be interesting to see what goes down when the game releases worldwide later this month.

Think you're pretty slick picking up an overpriced promo disc from eBay, don't you? Well then, you won't feel so smooth after reading this. Guerrilla says those promotional copies of Killzone 2 lack a vital component of the game: its online features. For those who can't do the math, that's half a game for four times the price. That equals ... not such a good deal after all. If you want to play the game early, it's you might want to download the free demo from the European PlayStation Store instead. Just saying. [Via CVG]

It seems Killzone 2 will be synchronizing with the game's official website, Killzone.com, when it launches later this month. We've previously seen this sort of thing happen with Resistance 2 and MyResistance.net, but the developers at Guerilla Games are looking to reward in-game intel collectors with online prizes. These prizes will apparently come in "various shapes and sizes," including hi-res printable versions of in-game posters and even Killzone 2 papercraft, like the one seen above. Awesome. The PlayStation Blog post that reveals this game-website interactivity also hints at future synchronisation. At the moment the "My Killzone" section of the website is looking a bit empty, but no doubt all of this functionality will be rolled out by the game's launch later this month.

  • Europe goes preorder mad for Killzone 2

Europe has done it again. Killzone 2 has gone platinum in the region three weeks before it has even been released. UK newspaper The Guardian broke the news in an interview with SCEE president David Reeves; 1.1 million copies of Killzone 2 have already been preordered in Europe. Judging from the review scores, it's easy to see why. We certainly had very favorable things to say about the game in our review. You don't have long to wait before you can try it out yourself. The demo will be out on the PSN store later today. With three weeks left to the game's release, that number is sure to increase, especially when Sony launches its £2m advertising campaign later this month.

Killzone 2 doesn't come with a gimmick. It couldn't be easier on the eyes, but if you're looking for something outside of aesthetics that quickly sets it apart from the bevy of other first-person shooters on the market, you're not going to find it.In its first few hours, in terms of weapons, enemies and narrative, Killzone 2 designer Guerilla Games seems as if it's constantly making the most generic choice possible, and honestly, it was enough to put me off at first. Nearly every Helghast is the same perambulating black blob with red eyes and every weapon feels like something you've played with before. But, as I would discover in the following hours, what it lacks in bionic arms and guns that shoot portals, Killzone 2 makes up for with expertly refined shooting action that's likely to shame most of the genre's titles you'll put in your console this year.%Gallery-4719%

  • Killzone 2 demo hitting Euro PSN on Feb. 5 [update]

It looks like players won't have to wait until after Killzone 2 rolls onto store shelves to get their first taste of combat. A Sony Europe rep has revealed that a demo for the anticipated shooter will be available on the European PSN on February 5. It will be available on the US PSN at the same time, but only to those partaking in GameStop's pre-order deal. It appears the uncommitted will have to wait for a general PSN release on Feb. 26 -- or attempt subversion via a European account."I can confirm that this will be live on the PSN store on Thursday 5th February (same day as SCEA) across all SCEE PSN locales," wrote Sony Computer Entertainment UK Limited's Hugo Bustillos in an email. According to Bustillos, the demo will consist of the first two areas of 'Corinth River,' the game's first level, described as 'beach landing' and 'warehouse.' A tutorial will be included as well, ensuring that all ISA greenhorns will be up to speed when the full game arrives for the PS3 on February 27.Update: It's live! • Leaked: Questionable Killzone 2 Super Bowl ad, making-of special

A 52-second video purporting to be a Super Bowl advertisement for Killzone 2 has been making the rounds, though its legitimacy has come under a great deal of scrutiny. First of all, the length -- NBC is charging in 30 second increments for commercials, leaving eight seconds unaccounted for should the ad run. Also, while Sony does have a few ad spots reserved during the big game, they're set aside for movies coming out of Sony Pictures, and not for games. Also, the writing is really bad. The leaked ad is posted after the jump -- with kickoff a few hours away, we won't have to wait long to see if it's a fake. Also posted after the jump is a leaked 23-minute making-of special for the Helghast-filled shooter, which is set to air on Bravo today. If you've remained in the dark about Killzone 2, you might want to check it out -- we found it highly educational. For instance, before we watched it, we didn't even know there was an earlier installment in the Killzone series. Yeah, apparently, it came out on PS2 in like, 2004! Let's talk about obvious things for a while. Bankruptcy sucks. That's pretty obvious, right? DreamWave Comics was working on a comic based on the Killzone universe. However, it never saw the light of day due to the company's financial meltdown. The BBPS.com has some interesting images that were made before the company's dismantling in 2005. To think, this comic would've been perfect to launch in tandem with the upcoming game (maybe as a Limited Edition bonus?). The quality of the art is staggering.Too bad it'll never come to fruition. With Killzone's current fandom, we think hordes of players would've rushed to buy this comic. Isn't that obvious?

  • Attack of the Ads: Sony UK plans 2???m Killzone 2 ad spree

Sony Computer Entertainment Europe has stacked a tidy lump sum of £2???m (approx. $2.8m US) to help promote Killzone 2 in the region, Edge reports. Planning to swarm the unsuspecting island with television and movie theater ads, Sony UK is adamant in pushing its upcoming first-person shooter. The dedication of £2???m points to Sony's confidence in the Guerrilla Games developed title, which currently holds a high 95% Metacritic rating -- if numbers mean anything to you. Sony UK has also allotted an additional £2???m in order to promote other high profile PS3 exclusives, including industry darling, but commercially snubbed, LittleBigPlanet.SCEE marketing director Alan Duncan told Edge that recent reviews of Killzone 2 prove the title has "lived up" to expectations and "brings a new energy" to the competitive first-person genre. Sony UK hopes strong ads for Killzone 2 can drive sales in the region, which will receive an exclusive bundle for the game's release. That's fantastic, but how about someone drive to the PSN server room and flip the switch to give us that demo already. Curious about Killzone 2? • Metareview -- Killzone 2

    01.29.2009

Ignore the fact that we still have about a month to go before Killzone 2 actually releases ... who's up for some reviews? The North American embargo for online media is up Monday (coincidentally, the very same day we're publishing our pretentious, non-numerical review), but Europe, print mags and IGN (sorry gang, not a world exclusive -- but close enough) have already doled out their numbers, thumbs-up and high-fives for the PS3-exclusive FPS and promptly moved on.Whether or not it was a good idea for reviews to hit this early is debatable (we may have to consider a second metareview closer to the late February launch), but at least the first critics appear to have positive things to say about Killzone 2: GamePro (100/100): "It took a long time for Killzone 2 to finally come out, but after diving head first into the game, there's no doubt in my mind that it lives up to the hype and is a must-play for FPS fans." IGN (94/100): "The single-player experience is a truly enjoyable campaign across the Helghast home world that will test your skills, particularly on the higher difficulty levels, and the game simply looks phenomenal for a console shooter. But perhaps the strongest segment of the game is the extremely deep multiplayer, which gives seven basic classes with which you can create your own customized super-soldier after performing your class-specific duties." IGN AU (90/100): "End line, Killzone 2 is, by IGN's definition, outstanding. It is consistent in every respect and is testament to the talents of the developer as well as the power of the PS3 in the hands of a team that knows how to use the hardware -- and who have the full support of Sony behind them. In the same stroke, it is not the be all and end all of console shooters, or even shooters on the PS3 - but if you've read this far and you're one of the Killzone devout, you probably won't care anyway. You can rest easy knowing it was ultimately worth the wait." Eurogamer (90/100): "This is a methodical shooter that makes few concessions to those not already interested in its single-minded approach to cover-based military action. I've compared it to Rainbow Six in the past, but it also calls to mind F.E.A.R, another tough tactical effort that was often misunderstood by those expecting a frag-happy spook hunt. Killzone 2 is a taut and muscular game, a shooter that gives back more than you put in, provided you have the intestinal fortitude. It may take its time revealing its true depths and pleasures, but the journey is well worth taking." Curious about Killzone 2? Killzone 2 has never lacked in the pre-rendered department. Heck, the game's most famous (or is that: infamous?) for its unbelievable visual razzle-dazzle. Sony has confirmed the European release date for Killzone 2 and it's exactly as retailers said it would be. The game will be released in the UK on February 27th (day and date with the US), with the rest of Europe receiving it two days earlier on the 25th. Don't forget the game will be launched alongside a Killzone 2 PS3 bundle. You know, the one with the rather attractive box. So now you can re-write the launch date into your calendar, but this time in pen instead of pencil.

"PAL regions" will receive the game on Feb. 25, while the UK and Ireland can get in the zone two days later -- same as North America. As Eurogamer points out, the Feb. dates have been listed by retail for a while, but we all know it's never official until the fat lady -- about to experience serious liposuction -- sings.Killzone 2 will also receive a special PS3 bundle in the region. Perhaps by now you've decided whether you've wanted to board the Killzone 2 hype-train or not. If you have, then you'll have seen the gameplay videos, prepared for the release day, and read up on everything you'll ever need to know. The game's now just one month away, though that wait may seem unbearable. There's only one thing which can abate that feeling of longing and that's perhaps to have a taste of one of the first things you'll ever see upon putting in that mint new disc. We're talking about the opening cinematic scene to Killzone 2. Watch it right here after the break if you've got to purge that urge; however, don't, if you want to keep the whole experience fresh on February 27. [Thanks T-e-X!]
