  • Lost Planet 2 details: customizable characters, team health

New details for Capcom's Lost Planet 2 have surfaced revealing the story's change of focus and a combined team power bar. According to a first-look article in the latest OXM, the game no longer includes a core character instead players create and fully customize their own solider for the ice cold war zone. Teams are comprised of four characters -- with four player co-op -- that each sport their own health bar (aka thermal energy reserves) but teams also share a combined power meter. The "Team Military Power Bar" reacts to team actions, depleting when a downed member of your squad respawns for example. It appears that Lost Planet 2 attempts to increase the scope of the action instead of the original game's plot. Teams can attack foes with many different strategies with various weapons, new melee moves (described as, "a little like the chainsaw in Gears of War") and VS units (Lost Planet's mech-like suits) at their disposal. If that isn't enough to whet your appetite for the surprising sequel, OXM describes a battle against a three-story high boss that ends with a team member jumping inside of the downed creature's mouth (presumably in search of Luke Skywalker). Lost Planet 2 is currently planned for the Xbox 360 but other platforms are still a possibility. [Via CVG] %Gallery-45837%

  • Capcom's Inafune: Xbox was only way into overseas market

Capcom's Head of Research & Development Management Group and Online Business (breath) Keiji Inafune is all about the Western game market. In an internal interview on Capcom's website published earlier today, Inafune makes a variety of comments regarding Capcom's changing attitude with regards to the Western market. "I think I can only get away with saying this now, but I really thought that using the Xbox was the only way to break into overseas markets, and I took that hypothesis all the way," Inafune says in the piece, citing Lost Planet and Dead Rising as two prime examples of games targeted at Western audiences that were successful.Speaking to the state of the video game industry and Capcom's relevance within it, he continues, "Up until now, we made games in Japan, and it was merely coincidental that those games sold overseas. But overseas game makers in regions like North America and Europe have gained strength, and it has become clear that this is the direction the game industry is going." We've heard statements like this before from MadWorld creator Atsushi Inaba, but never from such an influential and powerful figurehead within the Japanese development community. Considering the online multiplayer focus of the company's cadre of games both released and on the horizon, we think Capcom is putting its money where its mouth is.

All weekend long, Steam'ers can grab a digital copy of Capcom's Lost Planet: Extreme Condition for the low price of $5. That's something like 75% off the retail price and is the best $5 purchase one could make in preparation for Lost Planet 2. It's either that or a discounted pair of snow mittens. (Though mittens are much less entertaining.)Steam's special Lost Planet offer will only be available through Monday, so make a prompt purchase decision ... or be left out in the cold.[Via Capcom Blog]

  • Lost Planet 2 no quick 'n' dirty sequel, says Capcom

We could have easily gone for a more vulgar headline! Here's what Christian Svensson, Capcom's vice president of business development and strategic planning, actually said about the upcoming co-op shooter, Lost Planet 2: "Takeuchi's approach was, you know what we're not going to sit back on our laurels and just shit out a sequel, we're actually going to take it up five notches. We're not going to under invest in this, we're actually going to over invest in this, and we're going to build it bigger."Speaking to VideoGamer.com, Svensson relayed Lost Planet 2 (and Resident Evil 5) producer Jun Takeuchi's overall vision as being one that keeps all of the original's best qualities in, while dismissing the lax ambitions of lazy sequel design. You might even catch a whiff of 2007's critically acclaimed Call of Duty 4, which Svensson says was a big hit among the Lost Planet team. "So I think you're going to see some influence from that sneaking in." So, to sum all this crap up: Lost Planet 2 is promised to be the shit, but won't be shit out.%Gallery-45837%

  • Lost Planet 2 to feature 4-player online co-op

Capcom has officially confirmed one of the more exciting features found in Lost Planet 2's announcement trailer: "The intense and action packed campaign mode comes with the ability to form teams of up to 4 players online to clear mission objectives with friends." Based on the initial gameplay footage, said mission objectives generally involve coordinated mech maneuvers and wanton destruction of the titular planet's more unfriendly creatures. The press release also provides a general outline of the story, which takes place 10 years after the amnesia-riddled and ironically forgettable exploits of Lost Planet's Wayne Holden. Players will now take control of several customizable snow pirates "as plot threads evolve from various perspectives." Capcom promises to deliver more information on Lost Planet 2 over the coming months. At this time, the game has only been confirmed to be in development for the Xbox 360.%Gallery-45837%

Okay, so the planet's not nearly as lost this time around, what with people having settled on it long enough to start shooting at each other. But "Slightly Misplaced Planet 2" or "Somewhat Unfamiliar Orb 2" doesn't have the succinct strength of a "Lost Planet 2," so let's just call it a day -- and a sequel to Capcom's frenetic and famously frigid Xbox 360, PS3 and PC shooter. We'll be putting up the video trailer soon, but in the meantime, you can view it on the Xbox Live Marketplace or have a look at some stills captured by Gamersyde. We trust you'll be able to notice the new forest environment, as well as the return of mechs, monsters and machine guns. Update: You can watch the full trailer above, which demonstrates the game's new cooperative action. The trailer also notes that Lost Planet 2 is running on MT-Framework 2.0, an updated version of the engine used in the original Lost Planet as well as other Capcom releases like Dead Rising and Devil May Cry 4.

  • Keiji Inafune mentions Lost Planet, Dead Rising sequels, may be multiplatform

We completely understand talk of a sequel to Lost Planet. With a movie in the works, it makes sense to revisit the misplaced orb that's so wonderfully overrun with bugs and mechs. As for Dead Rising 2 ... we want more Frank West in skimpy clothing. Also, we want to kill 53,000+ zombies again. The mega man behind the Mega Man series and Capcom top dog, Keiji Inafune, recently sat down for a chat with Japanese mag Famitsu and was pretty direct about his forthcoming projects, making sure to refrain from beating around bushes. "We're finally putting out new Dead Rising and Lost Planet games," he exclaimed. He went on to say that Capcom is "thinking about multiplatform, and expanding upon both slightly from the Xbox 360 version." CVG asked a Capcom UK spokesperson about the matter, who said that Dead Rising "was a huge success for us and is obviously the kind of game we'd like to continue to make." He elaborated further, adding that, "At the moment we have made no official announcement regarding a sequel. As the source is Famitsu, I can only suggest that it was a mistranslation." Mistranslation, huh?So, what say you all? Want another Lost Planet? We know you want another Dead Rising already. We asked your mom and she said you loved the first game, so we're glad to be in agreement there.

Close your eyes. Wait, you aren't reading this news on a mobile device as you drive to work, right? No? Close your eyes. Think of Capcom and all of the properties they own. Now think about how rad it would be if Capcom really got involved in turning one of the those properties into a movie. A proper movie, we mean. Well, open those eyes dreamer because Capcom is committed to making a great movie based on one of their properties. Unfortunately, as you already know, they picked Lost Planet. In a translated interview on the Capcom Investor site, Head of Character Content Business, Toshihiro Tokumaru noted the upcoming Warner Bros. adaptation of Lost Planet, "will cost somewhere between 150 and 200 million dollars to make," when production begins. Once again, they picked Lost Planet. Not hating on the choice but maybe they should throw a few dollars at the travesty that is slowly becoming The Legend of Chun-Li. Please?

How awesome will the upcoming Lost Planet movie be? We'll use the only unbiased metric of filmmaking around: money. According to an interview with Capcom's Toshihiro Tokumaru, Lost Planet will deliver "between 150 and 200 million dollars" worth of awesome. That makes the upcoming Lost Planet film about four times as awesome as Street Fighter: The Legend of Chun-Li ($50 million budget), and about six times as awesome as the original Resident Evil movie ($32 million budget). In fact, Lost Planet will be as awesome, if not more awesome, than The Dark Knight ($185 million budget). Produced by Avi Arad (Spider-Man) and written by David Hayter, this is easily Capcom's most ambitious film project yet. Let's hope the executives at Capcom understand how dangerous a big-budget film flop can be -- Square's Final Fantasy film represented some of the largest box office losses in history. To remind you of Capcom's "vision," we've included a trailer of the game, after the cut. [Via VideoGamer.com]

  • Silver Live members get free cross platform title playtime through Fall

With Microsoft's Games for Windows reveal last week, where they announced all Games for Windows titles would be allowed to access a fully functioning Xbox Live without the need for a Gold account, comes word that ALL cross-platform titles on the Xbox 360 will be allowed access multiplayer functionality as well. Though, only for a limited time.Shacknews confirmed the news with Microsoft which ultimately means that anyone who owns Universe at War, Shadowrun or Lost Planet: Colonies Edition on the Xbox 360 can play multiplayer online against 360 and PC Live members with a free Silver Xbox Live account. The catch being that this free Xbox 360 cross-platform gaming is more of a promotion and will only last until the rollout of the Fall update later this year. So, if you're part of the Silver crowd, own 360 versions of any of the games listed above and have the urge to play online, you better enjoy it while it lasts. Your freeloading time is limited.[Thanks, to everyone who sent this in]

When Microsoft recently flipped the switch to turn Games For Windows Live into a free-for-all, several cross-platform multiplayer games apparently brought their Xbox 360 denizens with them. That's right, all three cross-platform titles (Shadowrun, Universe at War: Earth Assault and Lost Planet: Colonies) can be played online by any Xbox 360 user with a high-speed internet connection -- freeloading Xbox Live Silver account holders specifically -- according to a thread on Xbox Forums. Of course, the catch is you've got to have a copy of one of the participating game discs. So when Joystiq went to verify the reports, we realized our chest-o-games only contained the good ones. Any far less snobby readers care to shout out a "yea" or "nay" on the matter? [Update: X3F's Xav de Matos has confirmed that the Xbox 360 version of Lost Planet: Colonies can be played online using a Silver account.]In the interim, we've contacted Aaron Greenberg, group product manager for Xbox 360, who told us we can expect Microsoft to issue an official statement shortly.Update 7:10pm: And we've heard back from a Microsoft rep who tells us, "Last week we announced that we were taking off the Gold-only restriction for multiplayer gaming over Games for Windows- LIVE. For a limited time, we are offering free online multiplayer on Xbox 360/ Games for Windows titles that offer LIVE cross platform play. This promotion won't last, so we encourage everyone to take advantage of it while they can." You heard the man, go take advantage of it!

Capcom's E308 Press Conference wrapped up about an hour ago and the company decided to focus its attention on bringing Lost Planet to the silver screen. In production from Arad Productions, the team that brought us the Spider-Man films, Lost Planet is expected to land in theaters around February 2011. Penned by David Hayter, voice of Solid Snake of Metal Gear fame, the film promises to stay close to the original vision planned out by game producer Keaiji Inafune. From discussion during the panel, it appears that both the Capcom brass, who were in attendance, and the father-son duo from Arad Productions are geniuenly interested in creating a legitamate action film without completely changing everything about the game.A funny, and confusing moment, came when Capcom CEO Haruhito Sakamoto claimed Capcom saw great success from film adaptations of Resident Evil and Street Fighter. "We've had success with both of those," Sakamoto told the thin crowd of journalists.Street Fighter? Really? Well, you know what that means. Jean-Claude Van Damme will be in the Lost Planet film. You heard it here first.

Variety has confirmed that a film adaptation of Lost Planet is indeed in the works via Warner Bros. The script will be penned by X-Men and Watchmen scribe David Hayter, also known as the voice of Solid Snake. WB and Capcom are co-financing the film, with Warner Bros. having worldwide distribution rights. No details on the plot, but we've submitted our proposal for the film, which would feature LP main character Wayne Holden sneaking through a secret military compound on a remote island. It would be, dare we say, awesome?

We're putting two and two together and getting ... Lost Planet. First we were tipped by a source close to Capcom that the company would have a movie-related announcement at next week's E3, and that it would involve someone "well known to gamers." Next we read that David Hayter, voice of Solid Snake and screenwriter for such films as X2: X-Men United and the upcoming Watchmen, was talking Lost Planet at last week's Anime Expo '08. It all adds up. As reported by IGN, Hayter said he is "just closing the deal with Warner Bros." to pen a Lost Planet flick while speaking at AX08, although "nothing is confirmed yet." Of course, Capcom's E3 announcement could always be concerning another movie, but the evidence before us is compelling. [Via Capcom-Unity]

With big budget action flicks making all sorts of money this summer, and with Hollywood's constant searching for the next big thing, we shouldn't be to surprised to hear that another videogame movie could be coming our way. Honestly though, this time our surprise has less to do with that fact in and of itself, and more to do with the details surrounding it. Over at the Evil Avatar forums, the news was posted that David "Solid Snake" Hayter is currently in talks with Warner Bros. to write a movie based on, of all things, Lost Planet. While we shouldn't forget that Hayter does have writing expierience, (X-Men 1 & 2) we just can't imagine that there's enough meat on a Capcpm third-person-shooter's bones to actually flesh things out into a feature film. Plus, if this ends up getting off the ground, what kind of significance will the IP have by the time the movie is actually released? Oh well, in Solid Snake we trust.

First we should get this out of the way, I'm not Richard. As our American readers know it's Memorial Day and our fearless leader is spending time with his family so he asked Dustin or myself to take care of his weekly "Shipping This Week" post. Considering how well received it was the last time Dustin did one of Richard's regular features, I took the reigns. As a Canadian I'm not entirely sure what Memorial Day is. Okay, you can pretty much guess what it is based on what it's called. According to Dustin it's a day when American's memorialize stuff, but that just makes it sound like there's a lot of scrapbooking involved. Either way, Happy Memorial Day! This week brings us two new, yet old, games. id Software and Splash Damage's class-based PC shooter, Enemy Territory: Quake Wars, hits the Xbox 360 in a port by Nerve Software. While the PC version landed at retail around heavy-hitters like The Orange Box and Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare, Quake Wars finds itself on the Xbox during a gaming release lull and hopes to catch a wider audience the second time around. Also hitting the Xbox 360 is Capcom's definitive version of Lost Planet with all new content including the ability to play as the evil Akrid. Lost Planet Extreme Condition: Colonies Edition, a game with a name so long I had to eat a sandwich in the middle of typing it for fear of losing strength, lands tomorrow for the price of a platinum release. So there you go, two new/old titles hit the Xbox. Planning on picking up either? And yes, we promise Richard will be back to tell you about the games of the week next time.

With titles like Dead Rising and Lost Planet, it seems that Capcom has developed a taste for western cuisine, at least in how it applies to game development. This observation was echoed by Capcom exec Christian Svensson, who in a recent interview noted belief that the Osaka, Japan-based company could look to add an established Western dev to its portfolio in the near future. Confessed Svensson, "I would be sort of surprised if we didn't acquire a western studio in the next two years." But Capcom knows that it has the pick of the litter, and it isn't about to let just anyone into its ivory tower. "We're not going to acquire anyone that we haven't done a game with," noted Svensson. The exec also stressed that chemistry would play a "critical" role in any future match, leaving just 28 other dimensions of happier, healthier relationships to be sorted out.

One of those in particular raised an eyebrow: a first-person mode that you can toggle via the menu screen. Curious how the traditionally third-person Lost Planet would look as a FPS? Check out the video above.Other bonus modes include the self-explanatory Score Attack, a gauntlet of boss fights in Trial Battle Mode and Off Limit Mode, which lets you replay levels at a much greater speed with unlimited ammo.
