  • Sequel time! Lost Planet: Colonies discovered

Thanks to the USK German video games ratings board (Unterhaltungssoftware Selbstkontrolle or USK) we may have un-earthed proof that Capcom's Lost Planet franchise is not dead.Xbox-Archiv stumbled across an entry for a game called Lost Planet Colonies over on the USK website that was reviewed this past July today. Instantly, thoughts of a Lost Planet bug splattering sequel raced in our heads when we heard the news and after visiting the USK site, we were pleasantly surprised. The Lost Planet Colonies entry lists the game to be a third person shooter (yes!) and solely on the Xbox 360 (double yes!) Adding more proof to the Lost Planet sequel fire is the fact that the game is published by CEG Interactive Entertainment, a German subsidiary of (you guessed it) Capcom. We've heard lots of whispers of a Lost Planet sequel this year, but nothing has surfaced to be this concrete. Here's to Lost Planet Colonies becoming a reality and being an amazing sequel.[Via Xbox-Archiv]

  • Lost Planet on PS3 -- sometimes no change is good

Well, not much has changed in Capcom's Lost Planet since it was released on the 360 a while back. Flashing white pixels on a TV screen for extended periods has always been a no-no, for the TV's life and for the general wellness of your eyes. Luckily, this game goes to great lengths to assure both of those issues come up repeatedly. The title was fun on the 360 and if you missed it, you should at least give this one a rental when it makes its debut on the PS3.

Click for high-resolution image. So this is what Lost Planet looks like on PS3. Exactly the same as the Xbox 360 version. (It doesn't even run in 1080p!) While many are disappointed that Capcom's PS3 announcement was a port of a once-Xbox 360 exclusive, we're confident that Capcom's multiplatform engine (the one running games like Devil May Cry 4 and Resident Evil 5) will make this cross-platform transition a good one.Or else PS3 fans will have something really nasty to scream about. After moving Monster Hunter 3 from a PS3 exclusive to a Wii exclusive, many Sony fans were quite enraged. So much so that 31% of you are no longer interested in Capcom's products. That's some serious fallout! After days of teasing PS3 fans with the potential of "good news," Games Radar reports that Capcom will be bringing a port of Lost Planet to the PS3.Lost Planet, originally released on Xbox 360 and PC, has players running and gunning on a frozen ice planet. Players will jump into various mecha to fight the insect swarm that's devastating the planet. The PS3 version will include all downloadable content on the Blu-ray disc, making it the definitive version of the game. 16 player online support via PSN is also confirmed. This isn't the end of the Capcom announcements -- more are expected later this week. But, in light of today's announcement, how do you feel about Capcom now?

Capcom just announced that starting this Friday, July 20th, both Lost Planet Map Packs #1 and #2 will be available on the Marketplace for free due to PC users getting free access to them. These four maps together previously retailed for 800 Microsoft points in total and include maps Radar Field, Island 902, Hive Complex and Trial Point. But be sure to note that Map Pack #3 is not part of this free offer and will still cost you 400 Microsoft points. Capcom also announced that an auto update should be released sometime this month to fix the multiplayer connectivity issues. Enjoy your newly free maps and be a little jealous that you can't have the PC exclusive Mega Man skin.[Via Major Nelson]

Three more maps are coming to Lost Planet: Extreme Condition, bringing the grand total to 16 found locations. The third map pack will be available June 21 for 400 MS points (US $5.00).Featured in the map pack are a "frigid glacier with lots of peaks, nooks and crannies" (Ice Drop), "ancient temples set amidst a lush jungle" (Ruins) and "a throw-back to the good ol' days of pixelated 8-bit gaming" (Lost Technology). We're especially intrigued by Lost Technology -- how much is Capcom embracing "8-bit gaming"? Will we see 8-bit textures and square trees? Two map packs for Lost Planet, with two maps apiece, are currently available for 400 MS points each, in addition to Battleground, a map once exclusive to the Collector's Edition now free to download on Xbox Live.

  • Lost Planet and Dead Rising haven't broken 100K in Japan

    by

    06.06.2007

This info is definitely not lost in translation with the universal language of numbers. According to Capcom's own sales records (chart after the break), neither Lost Planet nor Dead Rising broke 100K units sold in Japan. This isn't really the most shocking of news given the sales of the Xbox 360 in Japan, but it does show the game resonated with North American and European audiences more. Despite tepid sales in Japan, both titles sold outside the Land of the Rising Sun to the tune of 1.4 million copies each, signs of Capcom's growing global focus. Now, before you go pointing at cultural differences -- highlighted by Monster Hunter Freedom 2 for the PSP selling 1.2 million units, while the PS2 versions of RE4 also couldn't break 100K -- here's some fun info: Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas, which was published by Capcom in Japan, sold 430K units. So, frozen tundras don't resonate with Japanese gamers, neither does a mall full of zombies, but playing a gang-banger bent on ghetto domination sells 200% more than Dead Rising and Lost Planet combined. Ah, good times.

  • Japan shuns Lost Planet and Dead Rising

As part of their 2006 fiscal year reporting, Capcom released sales numbers that prove that Japan hasn't been feeling Lost Planet or Dead Rising. According to their numbers, both games sold pretty well in North America and Europe, Dead Rising selling 730,000 and Lost Planet selling 810,000 copies in North America alone. But Japan is another story all together as both games have yet to sell even 100,000 copies, which makes up for less than 10% of each games' total sales. We understand that both Lost Planet and Dead Rising were geared towards Western audiences, so less than fantastic Japanese sales were a given. But we didn't think Japanese gamers would avoid these gems like the black plague. Don't worry though, Lost Planet or Dead Rising, we still love you and you can crash on our couch anytime you want.

Yesterday, Capcom sent word that the Lost Planet multiplayer map Battlefield will be available for free on the XBLM this coming Thursday, June 7th. The Lost Planet multiplayer map Battlefield will be available on Xbox Live Marketplace for free next Thursday, June 7. It was previously only available to those who purchased the Collector's Edition.Lost Planet enthusiasts may already be enjoying this game, but those who were late to the party or simply chose to pick the obviously inferior (and $10 cheaper) normal SKU can now also get in on the fun, although they'll start at a disadvantage by merit of being unfamiliar with the turf. Collector's Edition owners will be heard taunting Battlefield newcomers for the first 24 hours and talking about the "good old days" when their map was a more exclusive club, and how they had to walk 15 miles in the snow just to headshot another teamamte.*Two map packs, with two maps apiece, are also available for 400 MS points ($5) each.* Some experiences may vary

  • Inafune worried about recouping next-gen Mega Man cost

    by
    Alexander Sliwinski

    06.01.2007

Keije Inafune, who broke away from the legacy of Mega Man with Dead Rising and Lost Planet, says a next-gen Mega Man would be a financial gamble. He estimates a next-gen title starring the blue bomber would cost approximately $15 million. This is the part where it gets weird. Inafune says that from a producer standpoint he's worried about recouping the cost of development and more than once says he's waiting for someone rich to come along and fund it -- and it doesn't have to be Capcom."I'm not even saying it has to be Capcom money. It could be EA, actually. I should say a company we have ties with, so maybe Rockstar," Inafune said in an interview with 1UP (video after the break). He believes, from a producer standpoint, the financial risks are too great to make a new Mega Man and says, "Realistically, I would have to say, I would be worried if it would recoup the money we spend."After that the interview turns into questions about Mega Man Legends 3 and having Inafune draw for the reporters. It is interesting to see the man behind the blue bomber say that a next-gen Mega Man would be a financial gamble. Has the series lost any type of solid financial backing? Is Capcom taking a breather from spending money and upgrading the series to next-gen by focusing on other IPs? Could Inafune just be sick of doing Mega Man? What we do know is that Inafune has plenty on his plate right now with sequels to Dead Rising and the rumored Lost Planet follow up.

Those eager to traipse through an unforgiving climate and annihilate despicable alien creatures without the aid of an Xbox 360 won't have to wait much longer. A PC demo of Capcom's Lost Planet is set to materialize online next week, May 15th, and finally give those DirectX 10 cards something to do. Indeed, they'll be expected to utilize "the advanced features of Shader model 4.0" in order to render those frigid landscapes and enormous plot holes. Older hardware isn't quite given the cold shoulder, however, as Lost Planet also supports Windows XP and DirectX 9. If monsters and mechs do it for you, find it on store shelves this June, priced at a totally last-gen $39.95.%Gallery-2562%

Capcom signaled its self-described return to more frequent PC releases by officially announcing a PC version of Lost Planet: Extreme Condition for June. The Windows XP and Vista game will support DirectX 10 for gamers with those shiny video cards, but DirectX 9 players are also invited into the snowy world. The PC version will run at resolutions up to 2,560x1600, making the console war's "True HD" sound like a tired marketing slogan. (Oh wait, it already did.) While the graphic effects beyond resolution will also be improved, little else is certain to change.Capcom told us at its Gamer's Day event that the PC game may include new multiplayer maps and even increase its 16-player online cap, but both updates are still pending. However, multiplayer matches between Xbox 360 gamers and PC players will not be supported.%Gallery-2562%

The second multiplayer map pack for Capcom's frigid Xbox 360 shooter, Lost Planet, has been scheduled to arrive on the Live Marketplace this Friday, April 6. The two maps contained therein are "Hive Complex," a thankfully hygienic mine with bridges and tunnels scattered across a mountainside, and "Trial Point," a modern office complex featuring "a photorealistic backdrop of a busy city center." Capcom's community website holds video footage of the maps, both of which look graphically splendid (if you're into that sort of thing). The asking price is 400 MS points, or 5 of your nigh incomprehensible American "bucks".

  • Dead Rising and Lost Planet staying exclusive

Capcom's director of strategic planning Christian Svensson commented on their official forums to whether or not Dead Rising or Lost Planet would be appearing on the PS3 or Wii in the future. Bluntly put, it doesn't look like it's going to happen. Svensson says that both games are "not slated to appear on Wii or PS3 as far as current plans go" going on to say that he is "bound by NDAs on these matters so I can't divulge why this is the situation". We guess that with the Playstation 3 losing exclusives left and right, it's fair to question whether any of our previously thought Xbox 360 exclusives may be headed for multi-platform. But, in this case, we're happy to report that both Dead Rising and Lost Planet are pretty much locked up to stay 360 exclusives for the long haul. [Via Joystiq]
